    Trends and Indexes

    Tuesday, January 6

Good Luck on day #6 of 2009!

For College Football and the NFL, watch for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Divisional Playoffs Trends and Indexes 1/10 and 1/11"

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, January 6

The Celtics and Lakers are both in action on Tuesday night, while college football offers the GMAC Bowl. Here's a look at the games in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

It's Ball State vs. Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl at Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Tuesday night as college football winds down its season. The Cardinals (12-1 straight-up, 9-3 against-the-spread) are coming off their first loss of the season, a 42-24 pounding by Buffalo on December 5. The Golden Hurricane (10-3 SU, 7-5 ATS) won their first eight games of the season, but have lost three of their five contests since that streak ended. Tulsa fell to East Carolina 27-24 last time out.

The oddsmakers opened Ball State as a 2.5-point favorite in this contest, but since then that line has moved to Tulsa -3 at many books. The total for the game is sitting at 75 points. On the season the Cardinals went 6-6 on the OVER/UNDER, while the Golden Hurricane are 7-4-1 against the totals this year.

    Other Notable Events

With four losses in their past 10 games the Boston Celtics will be looking to pound the Bobcats in Charlotte on Tuesday night. The Celtics still hold down a big lead in the Atlantic Division, but both the Cavaliers and the Magic have been gaining ground on them in the Eastern Conference standings. The Bobcats beat the Bucks 102-92 last time out, and now have five wins in their past 10 contests.

The Western-leading Los Angeles Lakers are also in action on Tuesday night, and they'll put a six-game winning streak on the line at home against New Orleans. Rounding out the NBA's Tuesday slate: Washington at Orlando, Houston at Philadelphia, New York at Oklahoma City, Minnesota at Memphis, and Sacramento at Chicago, while the lowly Clippers will be on the road in Dallas.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Coming off a rare loss, the Boston Bruins will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host the Minnesota Wild. That game leads off a busy night around the NHL, with 10 other games on the schedule: Ottawa at Buffalo, Philadelphia at Washington, New Jersey at Carolina, Florida at Toronto, Atlanta at Pittsburgh, Columbus at Detroit, Colorado at Nashville, Chicago at Phoenix, San Jose at Calgary, and finally Los Angeles at Anaheim in a matchup of the SoCal teams.

Finally, the top college basketball game on Tuesday night sees Ohio State playing Michigan State in East Lansing. As well, Connecticut will take on West Virginia, Seton Hall hosts Villanova, Alabama is at Clemson, Purdue will play a road contest against Penn State, and then Arkansas will get a visit from Texas.

    News from the Wire

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger passed his concussion tests and is slated to start against the Chargers on Sunday . . . Oilers forward Ales Hemsky has a mild concussion and is listed as day-to-day . . . Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane re-injured his ankle during the Winter Classic and is day-to-day as well . . . star free-agent outfielder Manny Ramirez is still looking to cash in with a contract.

    A Peek at the Future

The Celtics are in action again Wednesday, but they'll have a tougher opponent with the Rockets in town. Other big NBA matchups on Wednesday include Orlando at Atlanta, Miami at Denver, Detroit at Portland, and New Orleans at Utah . . . Wednesday's light NHL slate features just Montreal at the Rangers and Vancouver at Edmonton . . . the BCS Championship kicks off at 8:00pm ET on Thursday.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Notre Dame ended 5-game losing skid to Georgetown, handing Hoyas their second loss in three days, 73-67.

-- Towson State pulled biggest upset of night, winning at Delaware 62-61, as an 8-point underdog.

-- Utah's Paul Millsap, who went to Louisiana Tech, recorded his 18th consecutive double-double. This is why Utah wins- they are successful in developing younger players to become contributors.

-- Warriors might be cursed; on night Corey Maggette came back after a hamstring injury, Stephen Jackson left with same injury.

-- Nuggets hung 135 points on Indiana, but Carmelo Anthony hurt his hand, probably breaking it. He sees a specialist Tuesday.

-- If you really, really like college football, GMAC Bowl is tonight, live from Mobile. Should be high-scoring, with two solid offenses.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) High drama in the desert late last night, as Texas converted a 4th down play with 0:38 left, then scored winning TD with 0:16 left in a 24-21 win against Ohio State, handing Buckeyes their third straight loss in a bowl game.

        12) Game really picked up in second half, after Ohio State led 6-3 at the half-- Ohio State used 6th-year QB Boeckman to rally after the Longhorns had grabbed a 17-6 lead late in the third quarter.

        11) I just realized this: Buckeye freshman QB Pryor was in 8th grade when Boeckman was a freshman at Ohio State. Pryor actually caught a TD pass from Boeckman, was a blocking back on another play.

        10) I'm wondering how many people actually saw the game; FOX doesn't do many college games-- will have to check out the ratings.

        9) Screwup in communication is costing Phillies reliever JC Romero a 50-game suspension and $1.25M in salary-- he tested positive for a supplement last summer, after he was told the supplement was OK, even asking the Phillies trainer about it.

        8) Kicker is that Romero was winning pitcher in Games 3 and 5 of the World Series-- if he did indeed take an illegal substance, why was he pitching in the postseason? If you read all the info that is out there on this case, though, it seems like Romero did what he could to make sure he was legal, and shouldn't be suspended at all. Seems like this is a middle ground that is obviously unfair, one way or the other.

        7) Tampa Rays gave Pat Burrell $16M for two years Monday; he'll be the Rays' DH, and play LF when Carl Crawford gets days off.

        6) Why do the Cubs always lose? Because they give Milton Bradley types $30M for three years-- what are they thinking? Can't wait 'til Bradley's first meltdown, when the poor umpire has to deal with the player and then the manager, mild-mannered Lou Piniella.

        5) Big Sky favorite Portland State was down 16 at half Sunday night at Northern Arizona, rallied to force OT, then wound up surviving a 4-OT marathon, 92-91 in Flagstaff. Vikings have won at Gonzaga, so they have to be taken seriously as a March Cinderella.

        4) Western Kentucky continues to be schizophrenic, losing by 28 at Mississippi State (were down 22 at half). This is a team that won at Louisville, but then lost by 32 at Evansville-- very strange team.

        3) Tennessee-Martin, which has very good guards, but no history of success in hoops, ended a long losing skid against Murray State when they beat the Racers 75-71 at home, their first win in last seventeen games against Murray State.

        2) Strong rumors have Jason Giambi signing up with A's, which isn't good news for me, an A's fan-- you sell out and take money from the Bronx, don't come crawling back when your career goes in the toilet. I'd much rather have Adam Dunn to play first or DH.

        1) Kansas plays Siena tonight; last Tuesday, they beat UAlbany by 36- fans in Lawrence have to be wondering where the hell Albany is, and why their team is playing two teams from there in same week? (Siena and UAlbany are both within five miles of my house)

                Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Wizards at Orlando Magic (-13, 190)

The Wizards should have a little pep in their step Tuesday when they visit the Magic. Washington, which has the league’s second worst record, beat the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday.

Last week, the club stole a victory on the road against the always-tough Houston Rockets. The Wizards recent play is a far cry from the wretched performance eariler this season.

“We just fought through it,” Antawn Jamison told a Houston reporter. “Nobody was hanging their heads down or second-guessing whether we had a chance to win. We played confident tonight.”

The Magic, meanwhile, have lost two of their last four. On Sunday, Orlando fell to a Raptor squad missing point guard Jose Calderon and big man Jermaine O’Neal.

Orlando could be without its top perimeter defender Tuesday as Keith Bogans is questionable with an ankle injury.

                Pick: Wizards

Los Angeles Clippers at Dallas Mavericks (-13, 182.5)

Dallas had just two wins in its first nine outings but is 18-6 in its last 24 overall.

Dirk Nowitzki is once again Mr. Maverick. He leads the club in both scoring (26.0 PPG) and rebounds (8.7 RPG).

Dallas has had a knack for starting slow and falling behind early. In Sunday’s loss to the lowly Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas trailed by 10 points at the end the first quarter and was unable to mount a comeback.

The same thing happened Friday against the Philadelphia 76ers, but the Mavs had enough gas in the tank to pull out a come-from-behind victory.

Dallas should be ready for the Clips, especially after letting a very winnable game against the Grizzlies slip away Sunday.

The Clippers have lost seven straight and are just 2-7 in their last 10. Mike Dunleavy's club is expected to play without injured starters Baron Davis, Chris Kaman and Zach Randolph.

                Pick: Mavericks
