          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EagleBank Bowl: Wake Forest vs. Navy [ESPN | 11 AM ET]

Wake Forest (-3, O/U 43.5): Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe is pleased that his team will get a chance to play in Washington, DC, saying, "I think it's a great location and gives our players' families a chance to get to the game." The game will certainly hinge on Wake's ability to stop the Midshipmen' running attack, as their defense is led by linebacker Aaron Curry, the 2008 Butkus Award winner. The Demon Deacons hope to accomplish something the school has never achieved with a win on Saturday, which is having three straight seasons of eight or more wins.

Wake Forest is 17-7 ATS in its last 24 games vs. teams with a winning record.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Wake Forest's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - OL Barrett McMillan (knee) is questionable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 23

Navy: Navy's defense forced six Wake Forest turnovers in their 24-17 upset over the then 16th-ranked Demon Deacons. The victory supplied Wake Forest with a huge revenge factor, especially after learning it was the Midshipmen's first road win over a ranked opponent in over 23 years. Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuck made it clear that both teams would want an unfamiliar foe in the bowl season, but there was just no way around Navy-Wake II due to bowl responsibilities. The Midshipmen are keen on evening up their all-time record in bowl games, as it stands at 6-7-1 heading into Saturday.

Navy is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games vs. the ACC.
The UNDER is 4-1 in Navy's last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - CB Rashawn King (personal) is probable.

CB Ketric Buffin (foot) is questionable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 20

New Mexico Bowl: Colorado State vs. Fresno State [ESPN | 2:30 PM ET]

Colorado State: Colorado State's players come into this contest with plenty of motivation, knowing that they could end their careers with their first winning season. Head coach Steve Fairchild has changed the program around completely and became the first head coach in school history to lead his team to a bowl game in his inaugural season. The Rams are quite familiar with their old WAC-foe, holding a 6-5 all-time advantage.

Colorado State is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games on grass.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Colorado State's last 11 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - S Klint Kubiak (knee) is probable.
S Mike Pagnotta (shoulder) is probable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 28

Fresno State (-2.5, O/U 60): The game certainly hinges on the Bulldogs' ability to get over their season-ending 61-10 loss to Boise State. Fresno State will rely heavily on its run game that had three rushers gain 593 yards or more going against a Colorado State defense that has allowed an average of 185 yards per game. Head coach Pat Hill has led the Bulldogs to a perfect 2-0 record in bowl games played in the Mountain Time Zone, with a victory over No. 18 Virginia in 2004 and Georgia Tech in 2007.

Fresno State is 4-27-1 ATS in its last 32 games following a SU loss.
The UNDER is 3-1 in Fresno State's last 4 games overall.

Key injuries - CB Damion Owens (finger) is OUT.
WR Devon Wylie (undislosed) is questionable.
RB Ryan Matthews (knee) is doubtful.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 31

St. Petersburg Bowl: Memphis vs. South Florida [ESPN2 | 4:30 PM ET]

Memphis: Memphis has a bit of familiarity with South Florida, having played them in four consecutive years from 2001-04. The Tigers come into the postseason in good spirits, after starting the season with three straight losses for the first time under head coach Tommy West. "I'm glad we're playing a BCS school," Memphis offensive tackle Brandon Pearce said. "There's a lot to play for." Having played three of their last six bowl games in a dome atmosphere may help the Tigers, as they picked up victories in two of those contests.

Memphis is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 non-conference games.
The OVER is 7-3-1 in Memphis' last 11 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - QB Tyler Bass (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 24 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

South Florida (-12.5, O/U 52.5): The Bulls will be led by ferocious senior linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, who's just 16 tackles away from setting a single-season school record. South Florida has a dominating 14-6 mark against current members of Conference USA, but the Bulls' two victories over the Tigers have been by a combined eight points. Many current players will certainly draw from the 24-7 bowl victory over East Carolina in 2006, as that was the only previous time the school has met a Conference USA opponent in a bowl game.

South Florida is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 6-1 in South Florida's last 7 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - WR/KR Justin Teachey (quad) is OUT.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 34

Las Vegas Bowl: #16 BYU vs. Arizona [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

BYU: BYU comes into the contest knowing that the Mountain West Conference enjoyed tremendous success against the Pac-10, led by the Cougars 4-1 mark over the past two seasons. The Cougars have dominated the Pac-10 on the scoreboard, outscoring opponents 141-77 in the those five match-ups. There's been much talk out of Provo that the Cougar faithful aren't exactly thrilled with BYU being placed in the Las Vegas Bowl, which could prove dangerous against an Arizona team that's playing in the postseason for the first time since 1998.

BYU is 1-7 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 4-1 in BYU's last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - DB Scott Johnson (groin) is probable.
TE Dennis Pitta (knee) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 31 (Side Play of the Day)

Arizona (-3, O/U 61.5): The Wildcats enter the postseason with plenty of momentum, picking up a 31-10 victory over in-state rival Arizona State. Second-year offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes deserves much of the credit for the Wildcats' success this year, as the offense managed to score 37.1 points per game, just two seasons removed from scoring just 16.6. Arizona's offense has the chance to redeem itself against BYU, after managing just a single-score in a 20-7 loss to the Cougars in the 2007 season-opener.

Arizona is 0-4 ATS in its last four games vs. the MWC.
The UNDER is 20-8 in Arizona's last 28 games on grass.

Key Injuries -LB Sterling Lewis (suspension) is OUT.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 30

            Write-up

            Saturday, December 20

            Eagle Bowl, Washington, DC
Navy won 24-17 at Wake Forest Sept 27, outrushing Deacons 292-43, with six takeaways (+4); they've had only two weeks since Army win, which is really their Super Bowl. Middies covered their last four bowls, scoring 35.3 ppg (2-2 SU, losses by 1-3 pts). Navy shut out their last two opponents, Northern Illinois/Army.

Nine of Wake Forest's 12 games were against bowl teams (4-5); Deacs are 2-1 in last three bowls, allowing just 17 ppg- they have a junior QB who has made 35 career starts- they lost last three road games, while the Middies won their last four away from home. ACC teams are 20-11 vs spread in non-conference games, 12-8 when favored.

Both teams have +16 turnover ratios; while Wake lost to Navy this yeat they crushed Middies 44-24 LY- they didn't play Paul Johson's Georgia Tech team, but they've had three weeks to get ready for first Eagle Bowl which should be a pretty good game, played fairly close to Annapolis, so Middies should have whatever crowd edge there is.

            New Mexico Bowl, Albuquerque
Fresno State had disappointing year, losing 61-10 at Boise State in last game; they're 1-10 vs spread in last 11 games, covering one of eight as a favorite. Bulldogs are 1-5 vs bowl teams this season, beating Rutgers on road in September, losing by 3 points each to Wisconsin/Hawai'i and La Tech, by 13 to Nevada, by 51 at Boise.

Colorado State is coached by former NFL assistant Fairchild; they're 6-6 playing one I-AA team, 3-4 vs spread as underdog. Rams are 1-4 vs the bowl teams they played, beating Houston by a FG, losing to TCU by 6, 35 to Cal, 33 to Utah, a FG to BYU. CSU was 2-4 on road, with wins vs sadsack San Diego State, Wyoming. This is a shaky bowl team.

Fresno allowed 28+ points in eight of last ten games; they had -7 ratio in turnovers their last four games, despite having senior QB. Fresno is 4-1 in last five bowls, with underdog covering all five, and an average total of 62.3 in last three. WAC teams are just 10-21 vs spread out of conference Since Colorado State is Mountain West team, would guess locals would pull for them, but Fresno usually travels well, should have lot of fans.

Senior QB and coach Hill would make me lean towards Fresno State.

            St Petersburg Bowl
South Florida has 20 mile trip from its campus to The Trop, which has never hosted a football game before, far as I know; Bulls are 2-9 vs the spread in last 11 games on carpet. USF is in bowl for fourth year in row, having played three one-sided (0-14/24-7/21-56) games last three years. Bulls lost four of last five games; they're 3-6-1 vs spread as favorite this season. USF threw 11 INTs in last five games, scoring average of 12.5 ppg in last four. Big East teams are 12-17 vs spread out of conference.

Memphis is 2-2 in bowls under West, allowing 42.3 ppg in its last three bowl appearances; Tigers won three of last four games, are 1-3 vs bowl teams, losing by 17 to Ole Miss, 7 vs Rice, 20 to East Carolina- the win was by 6 over Southern Miss. C-USA teams are 13-16 vs spread in their non-league games, 7-8 as dog on road. Memphis had extra week to ready for this game- they lost 35-28 to Louisville in its only game vs Big East.

Memphis is 6-0 when it rushes for 192+ yards, 0-6 when they do not-- most rushing yards South Florida allowed was 146 (Pitt), with UConn, West Virginia both gaining 139. Favorites of 12+ points in non-Jan 1st bowls covered just two of 11 tries since 1996. USF is a disappointment this season, but Memphis allowed 26+ points in six of last seven games and has gone thru several QBs this year because of injuries. It is rarely good to play double digits in bowl, but there is difference in class here.

            Las Vegas Bowl
BYU is in this bowl for fourth year in row, winning last two years, 38-8 and 17-16; Cougars are 10-2, but their two losses were by 32-7/48-24 vs TCU, Utah, two of the four bowl teams they faced (also beat Air Force by 14, Colorado State by 3). BYU beat Washington, UCLA, two of the lesser Pac-10 teams; they were +9 in turnovers the first six games, then -7 the last six games, going 4-2 after a 6-0 start. BYU got drilled in both games they were an underdog this season.

Arizona is in bowl for first time in decade, so they're excited, but they've also had just two weeks since their big second half vs rival Arizona State clinched their winning season. Wildcats are 1-4 vs bowl teams, losing to New Mexico of MWC and both Oregon schools- they beat Cal Bears by 15. Maybe the most impressive game Arizona played was 17-10 loss at home to USC. Pac-10 favorites are 11-5 vs spread out of conference this season., 1-3 away from home.

Underdog covered three of last four Las Vegas Bowls; MWC teams are 4-3 against the Pac-10 in this game, 6-3 overall in this bowl. Arizona held five of its 12 opponents under 50% passing; they have a senior QB who finally got Wildcats into a bowl. Think Arizona is the right side here.

New Orleans Bowl: Southern Miss vs. Troy [ESPN | 8:15 PM ET]

Southern Miss: Southern Miss is accustomed to playing in the postseason, as the Golden Eagles will be making their 11th bowl appearance in the past 12 years. The Golden Eagles have a perfect 4-0 record in bowl games played in the state of Louisiana and an unblemished 2-0 mark against the Sun Belt Conference. Head coach Larry Fedora will have a very important motivational piece to highlight in his locker room, as a Sunday victory would extend the school's winning seasons mark to 15.

Southern Miss is 4-0 SU & ATS in its last 4 games overall.
Southern Miss is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games vs. Sun Belt.

Key Injuries - LB Korey Williams (jaw) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 24

Troy (-5, O/U 55): There's no place like a neutral-site for the Troy Trojans, as the team has compiled a 30-8 mark since the 1949 season. The Trojans are led by its defense that placed five players on the All-Conference football team, led by junior defensive end Brandon Lang who placed in the Top 15 nationally in sacks and tackles for loss. Head coach Larry Blakeney made a very important remark in a December 11th news conference stating, "The New Orleans Bowl is where we wanted to be from the outset, no question about it, and that is where we're going."

Poinsettia Bowl: #9 Boise State vs. #11 TCU [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Boise State: With all the hype surrounding TCU's defense, the Broncos' unit has plenty of motivation entering Tuesday night's game. Boise State's stop unit finished third in the nation in scoring defense at 12.3 points per game, with only three teams managing to score more than 10 points. The Broncos' success on offense will undoubtedly be on the shoulders of freshman quarterback Kellen Moore, who was named to the All-WAC second team despite leading the league in pass efficiency.

Boise State is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-3 in Boise State's last 12 games on grass.

Key Injuries - TE Chris O'Neill (foot) is probable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 20

TCU (-3, O/U 46): TCU has navigated through a challenging schedule during the 2008 campaign, as the Poinsettia Bowl marks the fourth undefeated top-10 team that the Horned Frogs will play this season. The senior class has nailed down the distinction of being the winning class in school history with a 40-10 record and has the chance of setting a school mark with four straight bowl victories. It may take the Horned Frogs a possession or two to shake off the rust of ending the season so early, as they will have played just one game in the last 45 days.

TCU s 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The UNDER is 3-1 in TCU's last 4 road games.

Key Injuries - LB Robert Henson (academics) is OUT.
S Tekerrein Cuba (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 27 (Side Play of the Day)

                  Poinsettia Bowl-- Tuesday, San Diego

Boise State plays exciting bowls; their last five were all decided by six or less points, with Broncos losing three of last four- the Oklahoma game is memorable, but it is their only win in last four bowls. Freshman Moore had terrific first year at QB-- Boise is 12-0, scoring 41+ points in each of their last five games. Broncos are 7-0 vs bowl teams, but Moore tossed three INTs for TDs in his last two games, so that could be a problem. WAC teams are 10-22 vs spread in non-conference games this season.

TCU won its last three bowls, by 3-30-7 points; their last bowl loss was five years ago to Boise State, 34-31 as 11-point dog in Fort Worth Bowl, a home game for Horned Frogs. Only teams to beat TCU this season are pair of one-loss teams, Oklahoma (35-10), Utah (13-10)- Frogs had zero takeaways in those two games (-6 turnover ratio). but they had +19 TO ratio in their ten wins. Frogs lost on this field LY in regular season, 20-17 in overtime. Nine of their ten wins this season are by 17+ points.

Favorites are 2-1 in brief Poinsettia Bowl history; TCU won this game in 2006, 37-7 vs Northern Illinois. Mountain West teams are 2-1 so far in this game. Sunday's win by Southern Miss raised C-USA's spread record in non-league tilts to 16-20 this season. So far this bowl season, four of five games have gone over total, with favorites 3-2 vs spread. Frogs have covered nine of 11 as favorite this season. Oklahoma was only team that scored more than 14 points against TCU this season. This is good game, with contrasting styles. TCU's defense rates edge over a freshman QB.

                    TCU vs. Boise State
The Horned Frogs look to take advantage of the extra time to prepare and build on their perfect 5-0 ATS record over the last three seasons when they have 2 weeks or more of rest. TCU is the pick (-2 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Horned Frogs favored by 4. Dunkel Pick: TCU (-2 1/2).

Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii vs. Notre Dame [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Hawaii: The Warriors nearly upset Big East champion Cincinnati in their regular-season finale but blew a 14-point lead in an eventual 29-24 loss. “They’re a top football team and that’s what great football teams do,” Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin said of the Bearcats. “We’re a good football team. But not good enough to finish.” That setback ended a three-game winning streak for Hawaii, which was still good enough to give the team a winning record and a home game in the postseason. The Warriors are 3-1 all-time in the Hawaii Bowl.

Hawaii is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Hawaii's last 9 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - RB Kealoha Pilares (foot) is probable.
SS Erik Robinson (hamstring) is questionable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 21

Notre Dame (-2, O/U 48.5): The Fighting Irish have taken a lot of criticism following a terrible finish to the season, but it isn't over yet. They dropped four of their last five games, including consecutive poor performances against Syracuse and USC in the final two. “Last year we were a crummy team that very often was noncompetitive,” Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis said. “This year I thought we were a decent football team that blew three double-digit leads in games. You are what you are, as Bill (Parcells) always said. But the difference between 6-6 and 9-3 is blowing three double-digit leads.” Now the question is whether or not this team can break an NCAA-record 9-game bowl losing streak.

Notre Dame is 0-9 SU in its last 9 bowl games.
The UNDER is 3-0-1 in Notre Dame's last 4 games overall.

Key Injuries - LB Brian Smith (knee) is probable.
WR Michael Floyd (knee) is probable.

                        Hawai'i Bowl

Notre Dame lost its last nine bowls (0-7 vs spread in last seven, with an average score in last five 36-14); after a 3-9 disaster LY, Irish improved to 6-6 this year, but they lost four of last five games, with only win by 6 at Navy, when they damn near blew 27-7 lead in last 2:00. Losing 24-23 at home to Syracuse, followed by getting outgained 449-91 at USC took lot of the starch out of their three-game improvement. Now comes the distraction of OC Haywood leaving to become head coach at Miami, O.

Hawai'i got crushed in Sugar Bowl LY, but were in over its head playing Georgia; they're 4-0 playing at home in this bowl. After an 0-3 start vs D-I teams this season, Hawai'i went 6-3 in last nine games, with its only home loss in last five games 29-24 vs Big East champ Cincinnati- they're 3-4 vs bowl teams this season. After trying three different QBs, finally Alexander settled in- Warriors are 2-6 when they score less than 30 pts, 5-0 when they score 30+. Hawai'i had eight INTs in its last four games.

This bowl aims to entertain; average total in last six Hawai'i Bowls is a whopping 84.7. Underdogs are 5-3 vs spread in this game, with favorites winning four of last five SU. WAC teams are 11-22 vs spread outside the conference, with Fresno (40-35), Boise State (17-16) already losing their bowl games. Notre Dame's best win this season was over Navy- they're 1-5 vs bowl teams this season, and this is a road game, for sure. Hawai'i is 3-4 vs bowl teams. Lot of pressure on Notre Dame to avoid a second straight losing season.

Motor City Bowl: Florida Atlantic vs. Central Michigan [ESPN | 7:30 PM ET]

Florida Atlantic: Florida Atlantic enters with tremendous momentum, posting a 5-1 record in the final six games and junior quarterback Rusty Smith heated up by passing for 1,553 yards and 17 touchdowns. The program is still in its early days, but they became the youngest program to earn a berth to a bowl game when they captured a victory in the 2007 New Orleans Bowl. Owls head coach Howard Schnellenberger possesses a perfect 5-0 bowl mark and has said, "It's a great feeling for us to be invited to play in the Motor City Bowl and a personal thrill for me to be taking FAU to Detroit."

Florida Atlantic is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Florida Atlantic's last 10 games overall.

PROJECTED SCORE: 35 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Central Michigan (-7, O/U 68): Central Michigan may enter Friday's game lacking motivation, as the Chippewas will be one of just three programs to be playing in the same bowl game for at least the third year in a row. The offense has thrived when playing at Ford Field, averaging 40.6 points per game in five previous appearances en route to a 3-2 all-time record. Defensively, Central Michigan will lean heavily on a line that accounted for 28 sacks this season, which is more than the team total for any other school in the Mid-American Conference.

Central Michigan is 18-6-2 ATS in its last 26 games as a favorite.
The OVER is 14-6 in Central Michigan's last 20 games overall.

Key Injuries - S Chaz West (foot) is questionable.
DT Casey Droscha (leg) is OUT.

                              Motor City Bowl, Friday

Howard Schnellenberger is 5-0 in bowl games at Miami, Louisville and Florida Atlantic; Owls (-3) trounced Memphis 44-27 LY in New Orleans Bowl, their first-ever bowl. This year, FAU started season 1-5, losing its first two Sun Belt games, before winning five of last six, including 56-50 OT game vs Fla. International in last game that got them here. Owls are 2-4-1 vs spread as underdog this season, losing money grabs at Mich St (17-0), Texas (52-10), Minnesota (37-3). FAU is 6-0 when they score 20+ points, 0-6 when they don't.

Central Michigan is playing in this bowl third year in row, losing 51-48 in LY's game to Purdue (+7.5) after beating Middle Tennessee 31-14 (-8) two years ago. Chippewas allowed 31-56 points in losing last two games to Ball State (31-24), Eastern Michigan (56-52)- their last three wins are by 1-3-3 points, with CMU allowing average of 29 ppg in the three Ws. In their last five games, Chippewas allowed average of 34.8 ppg. MAC teams are 28-16 vs spread out of conference this season, 7-4 as favorite. Central Michigan is 1-4 vs spread as a favorite this season.

Howard Schnellenberger was head coach in NFL and had won a national title with Miami Hurricanes before any of these players were even alive. Have to respect his 5-0 bowl record, especially with QB who has made 29 career starts. Motor City Bowl isn't ideal destination for college kids, but at least the game is indoors, in an NFL stadium; Central will have big edge in crowd support, since they're couple hours away. MAC teams are 2-4 in this bowl the last six years, with favorites 6-5 vs the spread.
