Pick 'n' Roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Detroit Pistons (-3, 191)

The Pistons and recently acquired point guard Allen Iverson are starting to play as a unit and that is bad news for the rest of the league. The Pistons are 3-3 since acquiring Iverson in a trade that sent Chauncey Billups to the Denver Nuggets.

Detroit has won three of its last four games, including a road win over the previously unbeaten Los Angeles Lakers. Iverson has been his usual unstoppable self since arriving in the Motor City and is leading the team in scoring (20.2), assists (6.5) and steals (1.8). But it has been Tayshaun Prince’s strong play and leadership that has made the biggest difference during this time of change in Detroit.

Prince is taking some of the ball handling and play calling responsibilities from Iverson until he is comfortable running the Pistons’ offence. The lanky veteran is also taking care of the paint in Antonio McDyess’ absence by pulling down more than seven rebounds a night.

The Pistons were 3-1 last season against the Cavaliers.

      Pick: Pistons

Los Angeles Clippers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-1.5, 189.5)

Despite its dismal record, L.A. has enough talent on its roster to compete against the NBA’s elite clubs and it has more than enough talent to get past the struggling Thunder.

Five of the Clippers’ first six losses came against the Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets and Lakers. To make matters worse, newcomer and leading scorer Baron Davis (16.2 PPG) and leading shot blocker Marcus Camby (2.8 BPG) both missed time in training camp and early on in the season. Clippers center Chris Kaman (12.8 PPG, 10.2 RPG), forward Al Thornton (15.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG) and sixth man Camby make up one of the most potent frontcourts in the NBA. L.A. should control the paint against the short-handed Thunder, who could be without forward Chris Wilcox for a sixth straight contest.

Oklahoma City is scoring fewer than 90 points per game and giving up 110.5 points per game in its last four contests.

      Pick: Clippers

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Sabres at Boston Bruins (-135, 5.5)

Boston proved it has a first-rate goalie in Tim Thomas Monday night with his performance against the Leafs. He used his unconventional style to stop 27 of the 29 shots fired in his direction and helped secure an important 3-2 road win for the Bs.

In a game where even Claude Julien admitted his team was suffering from mental fatigue, Thomas saved the day.

“I can’t say enough about the guy. Since Day 1, he’s been great, ” coach Claude Julien told the Boston Globe.

The Bruins have won eight of their last 10 games and all four of their last home games. Even with limited rest, the Bruins will put on a strong performance in front of their home crowd against the Sabres.

        Pick: Bruins

        Vancouver Canucks at N.Y. Rangers (-145, 5)

The Eastern Conference leading Rangers looked deflated in their most recent win, a 2-1 shootout victory over the struggling Senators.

As usual, the Rangers were faced with a deficit after two periods and a better team would have capitalized early and left no possibility for a comeback.

Tonight they face the best team in Western Canada. The Canucks are coming off a tough loss to the N.Y. Islanders where the fans showed their appreciation for Roberto Luongo by showering him with peanuts. Luongo has been stellar all season, but the Canucks are playing four games in six nights and there has been talk of Luongo sitting out one of these games.

        Pick: Canucks

Dallas Mavericks at Houston Rockets [ESPN | 8 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Mavs: Dallas is coming off a 100-83 rout of Charlotte on Tuesday, putting together back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Dirk Nowitzki has been huge in those two games, averaging 35.5 points and 12 rebounds. The Mavs will be looking to avenge a 112-102 home loss to the Rockets in their season opener. That game included 75 points from the Houston trio of Yao Ming, Ron Artest and Tracy McGrady, who may all miss this game with injuries.

Mavs are 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-3-1 in the last 12 meetings at Houston.

Key Injuries - G Devean George (hand) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Rockets (-4.5, O/U 188.5): Houston is hoping at least one of its top three scorers will play against the Mavs after they all left Sunday's 100-89 win over the Grizzlies with injuries. Tracy McGrady left with a knee injury while Ron Artest sprained his ankle and Yao Ming hurt his foot. “We don’t need all of them hurt,” Rockets PG Rafer Alston said. “Sometimes teams with three players like that, you may deal with one maybe having an injury because injuries are part of the game. But to have three of them down? We need these guys to be healthy.”

Rockets are 3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The UNDER is 13-3 in Houston's last 16 home games. C Yao Ming (foot) is probable.

Key Injuries - F Ron Artest (ankle) is questionable.
F Shane Battier (foot) is questionable.
F Tracy McGrady (knee) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 96

Chicago Bulls at Portland Trail Blazers [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Bulls: Chicago fell to 0-4 on the road with a 116-109 loss to the Lakers on Tuesday and now travel to a place where the team has won just twice in nine games. The Bulls are allowing 103.8 points per game on the road compared to 95 at home and surrendered their highest point total of the season to LA. They will be playing the second game of a season-high seven-game road trip due to the circus being in Chicago and obviously realize they need to play better to win away from home. “I thought we forced some things inside,” Bulls head coach Vinny Del Negro said following the latest loss. “It was kind of an up-tempo game at times and we got a little sloppy with the basketball.”

Underdog is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The OVER is 15-6-2 in Chicago's last 23 road games.

Key Injuries - F Drew Gooden (ankle) has returned.
G Kirk Hinrich (thumb) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 95 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Blazers (-5.5, O/U 192.5): Portland is happy to be back home following a successful 3-2 road trip that ended with a tough 111-106 loss at Golden State on Tuesday. Greg Oden enjoyed his best game as a pro for the Blazers with 22 points and 10 rebounds, notching his second double-double in three games. “Greg Oden did a great job just dominating the paint, doing what he does, getting us into more of a rhythm,” said Portland leading scorer Brandon Roy, who is averaging 23.3 points in the last six games. “He is getting his confidence, which is good for our team.”

Blazers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 9-4-1 in the last 14 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Martell Webster (foot) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 101
