    Trends and Indexes
    Wednesday, November 19

Good Luck on day #324 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 13 Trends and Indexes 11/18 through 11/23”
    • “NFL Week 12 Trends and Indexes 11/20 through 11/24”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, the NHL, and the Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, November 19

Ball State will look to improve on its 10-0 record on Wednesday night, while LeBron James will play the new-look Pistons in NBA action. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Ball State continued their assault on the win column last week, knocking off Miami-Ohio 31-16 to improve to 10-0 (7-2 against-the-spread) on the season. That mark has the Cardinals at No. 14 in the AP Poll this week, although they're down at No. 17 in the BCS rankings. MiQuale Lewis ran for two touchdowns in their win over the RedHawks.

Central Michigan won't be a pushover for the Cardinals on Wednesday night, though, as they won their sixth straight contest last time out, beating Northern Illinois 33-30. The Chippewas are now 8-2 (6-3 ATS) on the season and will be looking to score the upset.

The oddsmakers opened Ball State as 5.5-point road favorites for Wednesday night, but that line has since moved to 7 points. The total for the contest is pegged at 54.5 points. The OVER/UNDER is 4-5 in Ball State's games, and 5-4 in Central Michigan's games.

    Other Notable Events

Allen Iverson and the Detroit Pistons had their three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday, as they fell 104-86 to the Phoenix Suns. Iverson scored just nine points in that contest, but he also picked up seven assists. Richard Hamilton led the way with 19 points, and he'll be looking to help his team get back on track on Wednesday when they play host to James and his Cavaliers in a fight for top spot in the East's Central Division.

There are nine other games on a busy NBA schedule for Wednesday, including Dallas at Houston in a battle of Texas. As well, it'll be Washington at Atlanta, Toronto at Miami, the Clippers at Oklahoma City, Philly at Minnesota, Sacramento at New Orleans, Denver at San Antonio, Milwaukee at Utah, and Chicago at Portland on the west coast.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The National Hockey League offers up three games on Wednesday: Buffalo at Boston, Vancouver at the Rangers, and Washington at Anaheim. Capitals forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Ovechkin were both named as part of the league's 'Three Stars' from last week, and they'll be looking to continue their offensive assault against the Ducks on Wednesday night. Anaheim is coming off a 2-0 shutout of the rival Kings.

As well, there are a few ranked college hoops teams in action on Wednesday, with N.C. Wilmington at No. 20 Wake Forest, Niagara at No. 23 Villanova, and No. 5 Michigan State at IPFW. The Spartans knocked off Idaho 100-62 in their last outing on Sunday.

    News from the Wire

The Sharks are hoping to have starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov back this weekend; he has been out of action since November 6 with a knee injury . . . Blues forward Andy McDonald, who got off to a hot offensive start to the season, with be out of action for at least eight weeks after suffering a broken ankle . . . Rockets Tracy McGrady (knee) and Ron Artest (ankle) both suffered injuries in the team's win over the Thunder on Monday.

    A Peek at the Future

There are only six weeks left in the NFL season, and the Vegas oddsmakers currently like the chances of the Super Bowl being contested by the New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans. The defending champs are at 4/1 odds to win the title again this season, while unbeaten Tennessee is pegged at 6/1 odds. Following those two on the list are the Steelers at 15/2, with the Cowboys at 8/1, and the Chargers and Redskins at 10/1. The Patriots, who opened with 5/2 title odds, have fallen all the way down to 14/1.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- It will be shocking if North Carolina loses a basketball game this season; the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers are the last unbeaten team for a whole season-- Carolina is very capable of doing that this year.

-- Arizona junior Jordan Hill has pretty good chance of playing his four years of college basketball for four different head coaches.

-- Arizona's interim coach Russ Pennell played college hoop on the same team as Scottie Pippen at Central Arkansas.

-- Arizona State got down double digits early at San Diego State, but showed terrific poise down stretch and beat the Aztecs 59-52.

-- Oklahoma did a good job defending the marvelous Steph Curry, but the Davidson star still scored 44 points, in Sooners' 82-78 win. Seriously, they defended him well and he had 44; he's that good.

-- I'm thinking the guy with 62 saves was more valuable to his team than the little second baseman in Boston.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.........

        13) Dolphins-- They give all the sadsack franchises hope-- after 1-15 nightmare last year, they cleaned house and are a contender now. Let me say that again; they cleaned house and are a contender now.

        12) Bucs-- Garcia has had one of those careers that will make a great feature on NFL Films someday; speaking of which, if any politicians are reading this, I WANT THE NFL NETWORK!!!! I'm willing to pay a little extra for it, please find a way for me to get it. Thanks.

        11) Falcons-- Another 2007 trainwreck that is having a great season. Let me go on record as saying that Michael Vick, while he did a very stupid thing, is getting a raw deal. Enough already-- get this guy out of jail. He's paid his debt to society. He'll be 2009's biggest story, for better or for worse.

        10) Redskins-- Jim Zorn had a parka on Sunday night, but no hat; it is common knowledge that 70% of the body's heat escapes through the head. If it is cold enough to wear a parka, please wear a hat.

        9) Cowboys-- If you were just dropped onto this planet and knew nothing about the NFL, then watched a Cowboys' game, you'd swear that Tony Romo was one of the greatest QBs in NFL history, just the way the media gushes about him. He has zero playoff wins.

        8) Colts-- Last time I was in Vegas for an NFL Sunday was in 1998, Peyton Manning's rookie year, one of the worst games of his career. Could this possibly be his 11th year in the NFL? Time flies, for sure. That reminds me I'm due for a return trip to America's favorite city.

        7) Steelers-- Does anyone know why the Steelers' logo is only on one side of their helmets? I'm not sure why, but I need to know this. It would also be nice if they put FieldTurf down at Heinz Field, since they also play high school and college games there. .

        6) Patriots-- Has another NFL QB ever been a starter without ever starting a game in college? Matt Cassel is going to be very rich at this time next year. The more I see him, the more I think he will be pretty good free agent signing. Is he Tom Brady? Of course not, but that doesn't mean he won't be a very productive NFL starter.

        5) Cardinals-- If #13 wins his third MVP this season, its time to get a calendar and start planning my trip to Canton for an August weekend sometime around 2015. Kurt Warner once played a pro football game here in Albany, an Arenaball game-- his team won 77-76. Little did I know I was watching one of the greatest stories in sports history.

        4) Jets-- Talk radio in New York is unique; only here would fans of a 7-3 team call up and bitch about the coach. Vince Lombardi won't be walking through that door people. Better learn to love Manginious.

        3) Ravens-- Joe Flacco transferred to Delaware from Pitt, coached by Dave Wannstedt; what in the name of Troy Aikman was Wannstedt thinking not having Flacco as his starter? Imagine being the coach at Delaware and having this guy fall into your lap?

        2) Giants-- Auburn once had Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams and Brandon Jacobs on the same team; where is the guy who recruited for Auburn back then? Must have been fun to be QB for that team-- just hand off to a future NFL guy and watch him go........

        1) Titans-- Texas Longhorns named Will Muschamp head coach after Mack Brown retires; problem is, Brown is only 57 and is on bigtime roll with his Longhorns-- why would anyone think he is retiring any time soon? Also, Muschamps's salary went from $400K to $900K, which will keep him in Austin longer than any title will.
