    Trends and Indexes
    Monday, October 27

Good Luck on day #301 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 10 Trends and Indexes 10/21 through 10/26”
    • “NFL Week 9 Trends and Indexes 10/26 and 10/27”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of Major League Baseball, the Canadian Football League, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, October 27

The Tennessee Titans will be looking to keep their perfect record intact on Monday when they play host to the rival Indianapolis Colts. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Titans are the last unbeaten team in the NFL, and they're coming off a 34-10 thrashing of the Chiefs in Week 7. Tennessee has also paid off nicely for bettors so far this season, as they're now 6-0 against-the-spread. The Colts are three games back of the Titans in the AFC South, as they're 3-3 (and 2-4 ATS) in 2008. Indianapolis will be looking to forget last week's losing result - they were pounded 34-14 by the Packers.

The Colts and Titans split their season series last year, with each team winning on the road. Indianapolis started things off with a 22-20 victory in their first meeting; Tennessee then won 16-10 in the second matchup. Both of those contests were UNDER results, and the combined scores of Colts/Titans games have been UNDER plays six straight times. As well, the Titans have picked up the ATS win in each of the last four meetings.

The Titans have been pegged as 4-point home favorites in this contest, while the total for the game is at 40.5 points. The teams are both 3-3 on the O/U through six games.

    Other Notable Events

Game 5 of the World Series is set for Monday night in Philadelphia, with first pitch at 8:30pm ET. The Phillies will be looking for another big outing from ace Cole Hamels in this contest. The lefthander is now 4-0 in the postseason, and he picked up a win over the Rays in Game 1 by surrendering just two earned runs over seven innings pitched.

The Rays will counter with Scott Kazmir, who is 1-1 with two no-decisions so far in the playoffs. Kazmir was tagged with the loss in Game 1 against the Phillies, allowing three earned runs on six hits over six innings of work; that bumped his playoff ERA up to 4.15.

    The Rest of the Schedule

After taking Sunday off the National Hockey League returns on Monday with six games, including a Big Apple battle between the Rangers and the Islanders. Making up the rest of the schedule: Ottawa at Buffalo, Anaheim at Columbus, Chicago at Minnesota, Boston at Edmonton, and also Detroit at Los Angeles in the lone west-coast matchup.

    News from the Wire

Colts WR Roy Hall is listed as DOUBTFUL for the Monday nighter, while RB Joseph Addai is listed as QUESTIONABLE but isn't expected to see any action. CB Kelvin Hayden, CB Marlin Jackson, S Bob Sanders, and TE Jacob Tamme are also listed as QUESTIONABLE for Indy . . . LB Colin Allred, WR Justin Gage, WR Justin McCareins, and DE Kyle Vanden Bosch are all QUESTIONABLE for the Titans for Monday. DT Tony Brown, CB Nicholas Harper, and CB Reynaldo Hill are all pegged as PROBABLE.

    A Peek at the Future

Tuesday night college football action sees Buffalo at Ohio and Houston at Marshall, while South Florida will play at Cincinnati on Thursday night . . . it's Cavaliers/Celtics, Bucks/Bulls, and Blazers/Lakers as the NBA tips off their regular season on Tuesday . . . the Sprint Cup Series heads to Texas Motor Speedway for the Dickies 500 this week, while the drivers of Formula One end their season with Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Bud Selig has sold baseball's soul to FOX, which is why I was in the leftfield bleachers at Citizens Bank Park at 1:45am Sunday

-- Very exciting Game 3 of World Series got record-low ratings, due to stupid bastards at Major League Baseball starting the game at 10 on Saturday night. God forbid FOX pre-empt House on Tuesday, which would have happened had Game 3 been postponed.

-- Until this year, no 3-4 hitters on same team had ever gone hitless in first three games of a World Series; through four games, Pena and Longoria are 0-30 with 15 strikeouts. Whoops.

-- When BJ Upton stole three bases Saturday, he became the first player since Lou Brock in 1967 to do that in a World Series game.

-- Ryan Howard is first player since 1993 to knock in five runs in a World Series game.

-- They didn't introduce the players on both sides before Game 3, just the starters, so 40-year old Matt Stairs, who waited his whole 16-year career to be introduced at a World Series, was deprived of that thrill. Its a shame MLB isn't run as well as some little leagues.

Monday's Dens: Catching up after a weekend of fun............

We'll do all the week's college football in Tuesday's Den,,,,,..........for today, two lists, one for my trip to Philadelphia, the other for Week 8 of the NFL season........the NFL list will be posted later Monday.

My Philly trip: Who says its always sunny in Philadelphia?

      13) FOX has a TV show called "Its always sunny in Philadelphia"; I am here to report that this isn't true, after waiting out 91-minute rain delay Saturday night, and sitting in leftfield bleachers until 1:48 am Sunday morning, watching Game 3 of the World Series. It was still raining sideways after they started to take the tarp off.

      12) Left my home at 7:53 Saturday morning; 38 hours later, I rolled back into the driveway, tired but happy; saw my first World Series game, also an NFL game, and enjoyed the company of good friends. Watched half the Penn State-Ohio State game with a hypertense 10-year old, stood 5 feet from Bud Selig, and generally had a great time

      11) Firstly a tip of the Armadillo's hat to one of my three friends named Joe, Mr. Gill, who may know everyone in Philadelphia. Do not know where Joe gets all his energy, but my sincere thanks are out to him for an outstanding weekend.

      10) In this space, I've already christened Las Vegas my favorite city, and my hometown Albany, NY my second favorite, so now I have to tell you Philadelphia is America's Most Underrated City. What fun they have here!!!

      9) In the space of 28 hours, Philadelphia hosted two World Series games, a Who concert, an NHL game and an NFL game. If you live in Philadelphia and are ever bored, it is 100% your fault.

      8) We ate at the famous Geno's Cheesesteaks, where the owner has hundreds of pictures of famous patrons/visitors, including Sylvester Stallone, Tony Danza and Sarah Palin up on his walls.

We were at Tony Luke's cheesesteak place Saturday, when I heard a very big guy say about the person in front of him in line, "That guy's a Tampa fan; let's kick his ass." He was kidding..........I think.

      7) Sat in 8th row of leftfield bleachers Saturday night; thought ball Longoria hit to fence in top of 6th was coming right to me, we were that close to the foul pole, on the fair side. Terrific vantage point of a historic and exciting game.

Not many replays on scoreboard at baseball games-- umpires' union is very strong, so controversial plays aren't shown to the crowd.

      6) Singer Tim McGraw dropped some of his dad's ashes on pitching mound as he participated in pre-game ceremony; nobody knew a lot about it, until Garry Matthews mentioned it on post-game show.

      5) Going to an Eagles' home game is interesting; would guess half of the crowd, probably more than half wears Eagle jerseys to the game. Westbrook-McNabb-Dawkins were most popular jerseys Sunday, with some Eagles from the Vermeil era (Montogmery-Carmichael- Bergey-Jaworski) also still represented in the crowd.

      4) If you liked the Rocky movies, you'll like it here. They played a montage of Rocky music/clips before bottom of 8th inning Saturday and the crowd perked up instantly, then the Eagles played another set of clips before kickoff Sunday, with Adrian imploring Rocky to simply "Win" as she came out of her coma. Great stuff.

      3) Ref called roughing the passer penalty against Eagles early in the game Sunday, and you would have thought someone's child has been stolen-- very loud booing, even after they forced Falcons to punt.

      2) After every Philly touchdown, they play a fight song (Go Eagles Go), and it works great, because everyone sings it. Song is corny as can be, but when fans shout out E!!A!!G!!L!!E!!S!!, it is very cool.

      1) We'll have more on America's Most Underrated City as the week goes on. I do highly recommend a visit there. Lot of nice people, and boy, are they passionate about their favorite teams!!!!!!

        This Day in Baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 27 in Baseball History...

1960 - Trying to jump ahead of the NL, the AL admits Los Angeles and Washington to the league with plans to have the new clubs begin competition in 1961. Calvin Griffith is given permission to move the existing Washington Senators franchise to Minnesota. League president Joe Cronin says the AL will play a 162-game schedule, with 18 games against each opponent.

1980 - In a shocking announcement, Astros owner John McMullen fires president and GM Tal Smith, replacing him with Al Rosen, former GM of the Yankees. Smith will soon be named Major League Executive of the Year. The move prompts a rebellion among the Astros 20 limited owners (who together own over 60 percent of the club), and on Nov. 24 McMullen will give up his sole authority to run the club, accepting a position on the club's newly formed executive committee instead.

1985 - The Kansas City Royals, behind Bret Saberhagen's five-hitter, beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-0 in Game 7 of the World Series.

1986 - The New York Mets won the World Series with an 8-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox in Game 7.

1989 - The World Series resumed after a 10-day delay because of the San Francisco earthquake. Oakland, behind two homers by Dave Henderson, beat the Giants 13-7 in Game 3.

1991 - In a Game Seven that rivals any in World Series history, the Braves and Twins go scoreless through nine innings. Lonnie Smith is decoyed into pausing at second base to keep him from scoring the winner for Atlanta in the eighth. Gene Larkin's single over a drawn-in outfield in the 10th is the difference in the first extra-inning Game Seven in 67 years. Jack Morris, who pitches the 1-0 shutout, is named Series MVP.

1996 - After two humbling losses at home, the New York Yankees won their first World Series title since 1978 with a 3-2 victory over the defending champion Atlanta Braves in Game 6.

1998 - President Clinton signed a bill overturning part of baseball's 70-year-old antitrust exemption, putting baseball on a par with other professional sports on labor matters. The new law overrides part of a 1922 Supreme Court ruling that exempted baseball from antitrust laws on grounds that it was not interstate commerce. That exemption deprived baseball players of protections enjoyed by other professional athletes and that players' association blamed for contributing to baseball's eight work stoppages since 1972, including the disastrous 232-day strike in 1994-95.

Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies [FOX | 8:20 PM ET]

Rays: Scott Kazmir wasn’t at his best in Game 1 of the series but he did pitch well enough to win, allowing three runs over six innings. So far this postseason, Kazmir has been good but not dominating, giving up 22 hits and 10 runs in 21.2 innings of work. Kazmir wasn’t been nearly as good away from home, going 4-6 with a 4.10 ERA on the road during the regular season.

Rays are 8-3 in Kazmir's last 11 interleague starts.
The OVER is 7-2 in Kazmir's last 9 interleague starts.

Key Injuries - RP Troy Percival (back) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Phillies (-175, O/U 7.5): No pitcher on the planet is hotter than Cole Hamels right now. Hamels is a perfect 4-0 this postseason and shut down the Rays potent lineup in Game 1, allowing just two runs over seven innings. Hamels has pitched 29 innings in the playoffs and has only allowed five runs, while striking out 27. Hamels was only average at home during the regular season with a 7-7 record, although his ERA was a strong 2.99.

Phillies are 6-0 at home during the playoffs.

Tampa Bay at Philadelphia (-170, 9.5)

It's been 28 years since the Philadelphia Phillies secured the club's only World Series title with a decisive victory at home.

The Phillies once again have a chance to clinch a title in front of their home crowd as they try to finish off the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 on Monday night.

One day after posting a wild late-night victory in its first World Series home game since 1993, Philadelphia powered its way to a 10-2 win over Tampa Bay in Game 4 on Sunday to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

After failing to come away with a championship in their previous two World Series appearances in 1983 and 1993, the Phillies are one win away from their first title since Tug McGraw closed out a 4-1 victory over Kansas City in Game 6 at Veterans Stadium on Oct. 21, 1980.

Of the 42 teams to take a 3-1 World Series lead, 36 have gone on to win it all.

"It will be absolute bedlam,'' Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard said of a possible title. "It will be one of the craziest places on Earth. It's kind of scary to imagine.

"We just have to stay focused and hopefully come out with that 'W.'"

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, looks to avoid a fourth straight postseason road loss as it faces elimination for the second straight series after beating Boston in seven games of the AL championship series.

                  Pick: under

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pena/Longoria may be 0-30, but Jimmy Rollins was talking parade in his press conference Sunday night-- this series ain't over yet. Hamels is 4-0, 1.55 in postseason, and Phillies are 6-0 at home in playoffs, but should they lose this game, immense amount of pressure falls on them, as Rays have Shields ready to go Wednesday. Kazmir pitched well in his Game 1 start, and they have phenom Price in reserve, if he is needed. Going to be very cold (lower 40's) in Philly tonight, as Phils go for their first world title since 1980, and just second ever. Could be very big night for Phils.
