    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, October 14

You can browse through the NFL's early Week 7 lines on Tuesday night as you watch Game 4 of the ALCS and possibly a bit of hockey. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The unbeaten Tennessee Titans are back in action this weekend, and the oddsmakers like their chances of improving their record to 6-0. The Titans opened as 8.5-point favorites to get a road win in Kansas City on Sunday afternoon against the 1-4 Chiefs.

Another road team opened as an even bigger favorite in their Week 7 matchup, as the Cowboys are expected to cruise past the Rams in St. Louis. Of course, the Cowboys are coming off a road loss in Arizona and will be missing QB Tony Romo, while St. Louis picked up their first win of the season in Washington over the weekend. The oddsmakers opened Dallas as 11-point road favorites in this game, but Sunday's results and Romo's broken finger should see that line decline during the course of this week.

And finally, the Colts started to look like a true contender over the weekend, as they blasted the Ravens 31-3 at home. Peyton Manning and company opened as a 1.5-point road favorite in their game on the road against the Packers in Week 7. Green Bay is also coming off a victory - they knocked off the Seahawks 27-17 on the road in Week 6.

    Other Notable Events

It's Game 4 of the American League Championship Series in Boston on Tuesday night. Tampa Bay will send Andy Sonnanstine to the mound in that contest, while Boston will counter with Tim Wakefield. Sonnanstine picked up a win against the White Sox in the ALDS, allowing just two earned runs on three hits over 5 2-3 innings of work. Wakefield didn't pitch in the ALDS; he was roughed up by the Rays in his start on September 17.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Pittsburgh Penguins fell 2-1 in overtime to the division-rival New Jersey Devils on Saturday night, so they'll be trying to get back into the win column on Tuesday night when they play host to another Atlantic Division club, the Philadelphia Flyers, at 7:00pm ET. There are four other NHL games on the schedule for Tuesday: Minnesota at Atlanta, Colorado at Calgary, Anaheim and Los Angeles, and Columbus at San Jose.

    News from the Wire

The Longhorns knocked off the Sooners 45-35 over the weekend, and as a result they're now the No. 1 team in the AP Poll. Alabama is still No. 2, with Penn State up to No. 3, Oklahoma now at No. 4, and Florida the new No. 5 . . . Penguins forward Petr Sykora might be back on the ice on Tuesday night; he's day-to-day with a groin injury . . . Flyers defenseman Randy Jones will miss more than two months with a hip injury.

    A Peek at the Future

Game 5 of the ALCS will be played in Boston on Thursday night. The sixth and seventh games of the series, if necessary, would be contested in Tampa Bay on Saturday and Sunday . . . there are five more NHL games on the Wednesday schedule: Buffalo at the Rangers, Boston at Montreal, Phoenix at Chicago, Nashville at Dallas, and Edmonton at Anaheim . . . new No. 1 Texas will get a visit from No. 11 Missouri on Saturday night.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- 72-year old John Madden won't work the Sunday night game in Tampa this week, citing consecutive coast-to-coast bus trips as a reason to instead spend the weekend with his family. Madden has worked 476 consecutive games-- he has a fear of flying. He will be replaced by Cris Collinsworth.

-- When was the last time Michigan was a 23-point underdog?

-- Hasselbeck-Romo-Palmer have all been declared out already for Sunday's games. Dallas also lost its punter and RB Felix Jones.

-- Have free NHL package for a week, so watched Toronto-Blues game Monday; the shootouts are really a fun way to break a tie.

-- Three months later, still trying to figure out how Jason Varitek was on the American League All-Star team-- he hit freakin' .220.

-- Tommy Bowden got fired by Clemson Monday; he never won an ACC title with Tigers, but was 43-32 in conference play, 7-2 in his last nine games against South Carolina; what is state of college sports when a guy with that record gets canned?

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.............

        13) Cardinals-- If they get Boldin back healthy and protect Warner, there is really no one stopping them from a division title. If Warner were to get hurt, then 8-8 could very well win the NFC West. The blocked punt for TD in OT Sunday was first one in NFL history.

        12) Falcons-- How happy you think Arthur Blank is? This time last year, his QB was in jail and his coach was in the tank. Now he has a QB who is Rookie of Year, coach who could be Coach of the Year.

        11) Buccaneers-- Jon Gruden, QB guru-- well, maybe not. Garcia is this week's signal-caller, and they have a wounded bunch of Seattle Seahawks visiting Sunday night, a pretty good break in schedule.

        10) Patriots-- Sequence where New England was inside 10-yard line Sunday night and didn't come close to scoring? Cassel doesn't have lot of presence/poise-- who can blame him? He was in high school, the last time he was his team's starting quarterback.

        9) Cowboys-- Romo is out for a month, Felix Jones 2-4 weeks, they need a new punter, and Pacman Jones might get suspended this week for yet another incident last week. No idea where to rank them now, but Brad Johnson is the new QB, with Brooks Bollinger behind him.

        8) Colts-- Crushed Baltimore Sunday, their first impressive game of season; AFC South will be a dogfight, with Titans/Jaguars trying to unseat Indy, but you get feeling Colts will make it to the playoffs.

        7) Bills-- Got waxed in Arizona after struggling with Raiders/Rams in previous games, so they need to beat Chargers at home this week or drop like a rock here. Edwards is expected back this week. Waiting to see what changes they made during bye week.

        6) Saints-- Explosive on offense, but problem is their next home game is the Monday before Thanksgiving-- they have trip to London, and that game is technically a home game, but next time they're playing in Superdome is six weeks from yesterday.

        5) Redskins-- We'll give them pass for letting down after winning at both Dallas/Philly. In the NFL, you win 3-4 games in a row, and all the pregame shows want to do features on you-- its hard not to get so full of yourself, you forget to focus on the next game.

        4) Jaguars-- Imagine being a college baseball umpire 20-25 years ago, working a USC game, and squeezing Trojan pitcher Randy Johnson on close pitches? Not only is he 6-10, but his catcher was linebacker Jack Del Rio, who turned out to be a be a pretty damn good coach.

        3) Steelers-- No idea who to rank third here, but assume a bye week helped Big Ben's sore shoulder, which temporarily puts Men of Steel in this spot. In close, tense playoff game, trust Mike Tomlin to make correct administrative decisions as much as I would trust Sarah Palin to be President. Whoops, did I just type that?

        2) Giants-- Defending champs had 14-game road win streak snapped by inspired Cleveland team that outworked them for 60:00 Monday night. NFC East took lot of hits in last 48 hours; all of a sudden, the Eagles' plight for this season doesn't look so bleak.

        1) Titans-- They're unbeaten, run ball well, have veteran QB who has seen it all, and have one of best coaches in league. Their division is a minefield, no easy games, but they're fundamentally sound. Unsure what effect return of Vince Young has on team chemistry, but Kerry Collins has to start as long as Titans keep winning.

          MLB

          Tuesday, October 14

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          This day in Baseball….
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 14 in Baseball History...

          * 1905 - Christy Mathewson blanked the Philadelphia Athletics 2-0 to give the New York Giants the World Series in five games. All were shutouts, with Mathewson getting three, Joe McGinnity one, and Chief Bender of Philadelphia one.

          * 1906 - The White Sox jump on Three Finger Brown for seven runs in the first two innings and coast behind Doc White to a 7-1 Series-ending victory. The losers share of $439.50 for the Cubs is the lowest ever.

          * 1908 - Before the smallest crowd in World Series history (6,210), the Tigers are tamed on three hits by Orval Overall, who fans 10 in a 2-0 win. The Cubs win the World Series in five games.

          * 1909 - George Mullin outlasts three Pirates pitchers for a 5-4 win that sends the World Series to a seventh game in Detroit. This is the first World Series to go the limit.

          * 1929 - The Philadelphia A's rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 and take the World Series in five games. Mule Haas' two-run homer tied the game and Bing Miller's RBI double won the game.

          * 1960 - In a 9-9 tie, Bill Mazeroski leads off the last of the ninth and hits a dramatic home run off Ralph Terry to give Pittsburgh a 10-9 win and the World Championship. Despite Maz's heroics, Bobby Richardson is the Series MVP.

          * 1964 - Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle hit home runs on back-to-back pitches from Curt Simmons, and Joe Pepitone belts a grand slam in Game Six. New York wins 8-3 at St. Louis and evens the World Series.

          * 1965 - Sandy Koufax tossed his second shutout to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 2-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins and the World Series in seven games.

          * 1968 - In the NL expansion draft, the Expos choose 30 players, including Maury Wills, Jim Grant, Donn Clendenon and Manny Mota. San Diego's 30 selections include Dave Giusti, Nate Colbert, Zoilo Versalles, Al McBean and Cito Gaston.

          * 1969 - Tommie Agee and Ed Kranepool hit home runs, Agee makes two brilliant catches in center field, and the Mets blank the Orioles 5-0. The underdog Mets take a 2-1 World Series lead.

          * 1971 - Pittsburgh's Nelson Briles threw a two-hitter against the Orioles for a 4-0 victory which gave the Pirates a 3-2 edge in the World Series.

          * 1972 - Catcher Gene Tenace becomes the first player ever to homer in each of his first two at-bats in the World Series, leading the A's to a 3-2 opening-game win over the Reds.

          * 1973 - The Mets win Game Two of the World Series, 10-7, scoring four runs in an 11th inning that features the last major league hit by Willie Mays and two errors by Oakland second baseman Mike Andrews. Finley subsequently puts Andrews on the disabled list in a move that will be questioned and then reversed.

          * 1975 - The Reds took a 2-1 lead in the World Series with a controversial 6-5, 10-inning victory over the Boston Red Sox in Cincinnati. In the 10th, Reds pinch-hitter Ed Armbrister attempted a sacrifice bunt and bounced the ball in front of the plate. Catcher Carlton Fisk, in an attempt to field the ball, collided with Armbrister and threw the ball into center in an attempt to force Cesar Geronimo at second. Geronimo went to third -- and later scored the game-winner -- and Armbrister moved to second. Home plate umpire Larry Barnett ruled there was no interference despite heated protests by the Red Sox.

          * 1976 - Chris Chambliss hit a ninth-inning home run off Kansas City's Mark Littell to give the New York Yankees a 7-6 victory over the Royals and their first American League pennant since 1964.

          * 1984 - Kirk Gibson hit two home runs to lead Detroit to an 8-4 victory and the World Series in five games over the San Diego Padres.

          * 1992 - The Toronto Blue Jays became the first Canadian team to reach the Series with a 9-2 win over the Oakland Athletics in Game 6 of the American League championship series.

          * 1997 - The Florida Marlins defeated the Atlanta Braves 7-4 behind Kevin Brown's complete game and Bobby Bonilla's three RBIs, winning the NL championship series 4-2.

          * 1998 - The San Diego Padres reached the World Series for the first time since 1984, shutting down the Atlanta Braves' comeback bid behind MVP Sterling Hitchcock for a 5-0 victory in Game 6 of the NL championship series.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay at Boston (-148, 9)

The Boston Red Sox felt pretty good about their chances in the AL championship series after winning Game 1 and having two pitchers who have won World Series clinchers waiting in the wings.

Two losses later, they're hitching their hopes to a 42-year-old knuckleballer to avoid falling into a 3-1 series deficit.

After watching the Tampa Bay Rays tee off on Josh Beckett and Jon Lester, Boston will turn to Tim Wakefield in Game 4 of the ALCS Tuesday at Fenway Park.

Wakefield has made 16 more playoff appearances since, and most of them haven't gone well. He earned a pair of complete game victories with the Pirates in that NLCS, but is just 3-6 with a 7.54 ERA in the postseason with Boston. Wakefield is 0-2 with a 9.22 ERA in three playoff starts since the 2004 World Series.

He faced the Rays three times in 2008 - all in St. Petersburg - and went 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA. Wakefield gave up three homers in his last start against Tampa Bay on Sept. 17, when he allowed six runs in 2 1-3 innings in a 10-3 loss.

Wakefield was 19-3 lifetime against the Rays heading into 2008.

                    Pick: Red Sox
