Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays (-117, 7.5)

The depth of quality starting pitching on the Boston Red Sox gave manager Terry Francona the luxury of giving Josh Beckett as much time to heal as necessary in both the AL division series last week, and now the league championship series.

Beckett and the Red Sox will try to reap the dividends of those extra days off Saturday night when they attempt to take a 2-0 series lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Beckett (0-0, 7.20 ERA) has arguably been the best postseason starter of this decade, going 6-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 10 starts and 11 overall appearances - including 4-0 in as many starts with a 1.20 ERA last year in helping the Red Sox win the World Series. But the right-hander looked out of sorts Sunday in Game 3 of the division series as he tried to overcome a strained side muscle suffered late in the regular season, giving up four runs and nine hits - including two home runs - in five innings of Boston's eventual 7-5, 12-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

But with that being his lone start in a 19-day span, Francona is confident Beckett will find the playoff form that led to him winning the 2003 World Series and 2007 ALCS Most Valuable Player awards.

"He's fine physically," Francona said. "The farther he's removed from his problems of last week, he can concentrate on his routine and concentrate on pitching instead of trying to get better. If you don't physically have the stuff to do it, you're probably kind of running upstream a little bit."

Scott Kazmir (1-0, 3.38) will try to help the Rays salvage a split of the first two games. The left-hander worked in and out of trouble in his postseason debut Oct. 3, allowing two runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings in Tampa Bay's 6-2 win in Game 2 over the Chicago White Sox.

Kazmir has had a difficult time solving Dustin Pedroia, who is 14-for-25 (.560) lifetime against the lefty. Pedroia, though, is 2-for-20 through Boston's five playoff games.

      Pick: Rays

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Atlanta Thrashers at Florida Panthers

Both teams are playing their second game in as many nights. Even though it is early in the season this still has a tendency to slow things down, especially in the third period.

The Panthers have a very promising blue line in front of goaltender netminder Tomas Vokoun. This guy regularly robs snipers of sure goals and can steal a game from time to time.

Florida won't wow anyone with its offense but the team can wear opponents down on the D side of things. The Thrashers don’t have much firepower so the main way they will win games this year is laying back and waiting for chances.

Last year seven of the eight meetings between these two clubs played under the total. Look for another low-scoring game here.

                    Pick: under 5.5

Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks

The Sharks started the season out with a bang beating division rival Anaheim 4-1 on Thursday. The new guys – head coach Todd McLellan and defensemen Rob Blake and Dan Boyle - all injected life in this already lethal Sharks team.

Blake and Boyle both had an assist and McLellan's guru stamp was all over the power play. The new bench boss incorporated his power play strategies to the Sharks quite seamlessly. The Sharks will be contending for the Western Conference title and it showed in this game.

This will be the opening game for LA. Terry Murray will have his hands full this year with a young rebuilding project. Well let’s call it the John Tavares project. That’s the kid everyone wants in this coming draft.

The Kings did some major salary dumping cutting ties with defensemen Rob Blake and Lubomir Visnovsky. As a result the blue line is just a rag-tag group this year. Drew Doughty and Thomas Hickey are in for a long season, but the question mark is Jack Johnson. He hasn’t lived up to the hype yet.

On the offensive side of things Anze Kopitar is the gun for the Kings. He scored 32 goals and had 45 helpers last year. With proper management and structure, this team could be a force in a few years time.

                    But not tonight.

                    Pick: Sharks -1.5
