    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, October 11

College football, the American League Championship Series, Sprint Cup racing, and hockey will all compete for the spotlight on Saturday. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

No. 1 Oklahoma crushed Baylor 49-17 last week, but they should have a tougher battle on their hands on Saturday afternoon when they play against No. 5 Texas. The Longhorns beat Colorado 38-14 last time out, and they'll be looking to leap in the polls by defeating the top-ranked Sooners. Oklahoma is a 7-point favorite in the Big 12 game.

No. 2 Alabama is on a bye this week, but the rest of the college football Top 10 will hit the gridiron. No. 3 Missouri (-14) hosts No. 17 Oklahoma State, while No. 4 LSU visits No. 11 Florida (-6), and No. 6 Penn State (-6) travels to Wisconsin. As well, it's Nebraska at No. 7 Texas Tech (-20.5), Arizona State at No. 8 Southern Cal (-28), New Mexico at No. 9 Brigham Young (-23.5), and Tennessee at No. 10 Georgia (-12).

Rounding out the games with ranked teams: Purdue at No. 12 Ohio State (-18.5), No. 13 Vanderbilt (-2.5) at Mississippi State, No. 14 Utah (-23) at Wyoming, No. 15 Boise State (-11) at Southern Miss, Colorado at No. 16 Kansas (-14), Arkansas at No. 20 Auburn (-18.5), Notre Dame at No. 22 North Carolina (-7.5), and No. 23 Michigan State (-1.5) at Northwestern. As well, No. 25 Ball State (-15.5) travels to Western Kentucky.

    Other Notable Events

The Red Sox and Rays will play Game 2 of the American League Championship Series in Tampa Bay on Saturday, with Boston's Josh Beckett facing Tampa's Scott Kazmir.

Beckett will be looking to shake off a middling outing against the Angels in the ALDS; the righthander surrendered four earned runs on nine hits over five innings in a no-decision versus Los Angeles, giving up two home runs and walking four batters. Beckett allowed just two earned runs over 14 innings in two starts against Tampa in September.

Kazmir picked up a win in the ALDS against the White Sox, surrendering two earned runs on eight hits over 5 1-3 innings, and striking out four batters. The lefthander had two starts versus Boston in September, and was roughed up for 11 runs in nine innings.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Sprint Cup Series hits Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday for the Bank of America 500. Jimmie Johnson takes a 72-point lead in the standings into this race, but he's back at just 7/1 Vegas odds to get the victory. Carl Edwards sits at 5/1, with Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch both at 6/1, and Tony Stewart also at 7/1. Kasey Kahne, who has won three of the last five Cup races at Lowe's, is back at 12/1 odds to grab the victory.

As well, the National Hockey League turns its schedule up another notch on Saturday night, with 13 games on tap. Notable matchups for the evening include the Rangers at Philadelphia, Detroit at Ottawa, New Jersey at Pittsburgh, and Montreal at Toronto. Rounding out the night's slate: St. Louis at the Islanders, Atlanta at Florida, Chicago at Washington, Carolina at Tampa Bay, Dallas at Nashville, Boston at Minnesota, Columbus at Phoenix, Los Angeles at San Jose, and finally Vancouver at Calgary.

    A Peek at the Future

The Phillies and Dodgers will play Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Sunday night, with Jamie Moyer expected to counter Hiroki Kuroda . . . Both the NLCS and ALCS will stage games on Monday . . . the Formula One circuit will be racing in Asia at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday . . . the Chargers are pegged as 5-point home favorites to knock off the Patriots on Sunday night, with the total at 44.5 points.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

        13) If someone out there is an expert on the stock market, I'd like to get some answers, since I know next-to-nothing about it. Live TV is the best, and this financial crisis has increased the amount of live TV, but I have some more basic questions about this. Can anyone help?

        12) Georgia Tech was 9-14/230 passing last week in their win vs the Duke Blue Devils. Kid named Demaryius Thomas caught all nine of those completed passes, something I don't think I had seen before.

        11) If you have 49er tight end Vernon Davis on your NFL fantasy team, you might want to trade him; no tight end has ever caught 39 or more passes in a Mike Martz offense. He just doesn't utilize them. '

        10) I have a rule I'd like implemented: every candidate for President and Vice President should have to do a one-hour interview, alone, on one of the Sunday morning political shows. These jobs are the most important in the world- the candidates need to be scrutinized.

        9) Mets sold out all 49 of their luxury boxes for 2009, 39 of which cost $275,000 for the season, the other ten cost $500,000 apiece. In an era where businesses are really struggling, it is amazing they sold all those boxes, even if it is for a brand new stadium.

        8) NBA stat freaks like myself will be pleased to know that 2008-09 boxscores look like they will include plus-minus as a basic stat. This is a great statistic for determining what players are the most effective in helping their team win.

        7) My next goal is to see swings/misses included in pitching stats in major league boxscores. What a telling statistic that is-- would love to see that in the regular boxscores. Not to pick on Barry Zito, but we heard early this season that he had only one or two swings/misses in one of his starts-- he got lot better at that as the season went on.

        6) Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt has a brother named Dickie and a daughter named Haven.

        5) When Arte Moreno bought the Los Angeles Angels, the first thing he did was lower the beer prices, one of many reasons why he is one of the very best owners in all of sports. He understands people.

        4) If you're Manny Ramirez and you're a free agent, you look at how close the outfield fences are in Philadelphia and wonder, "Wouldn't it be fun to play here 81 games a year?" What numbers he would put up in Philly, but money will talk, and it won't say Philadelphia.

        3) Don't look now, but college basketball practice starts next week.

        2) Southern Mississippi fired longtime coach Jeff Bower last year, as his program had stagnated a little, just like Syracuse fired Pasqualoni a few years ago for the same reason. Now, USM is 0-2 in Conference USA for the first time in 13 years- wonder if they miss Bower yet?

        1) Roger Staubach once wrote a recruiting letter to a kid in Hazleton, PA, trying to get him to come and play QB for the Naval Academy. Kid's name was Joe Maddon, and now he manages the Tampa Rays. Maddon wound up going to college at Lafayette.

                Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-11) at Montreal Alouettes (9-5) (Montreal -12.5)

The Tiger-Cats stunned the Montreal Alouettes last week at Ivor Wynne Stadium but it would be surprising to see them create another upset on Canadian Thanksgiving.

That said, the Als should not - and most likely won’t - take the Ti-Cats lightly. Offensive player of the week Quinton Porter did go 27 for 32 for 429 yards with five touchdowns to lead them to victory on Sunday. Incredibly, Anthony Calvillo, completed 44 of the 53 passes he attempted for 472 yards and four touchdowns in that loss.

Montreal coach Marc Trestman warned everyone last week, this Hamilton team has a stout defense that, despite a losing record, now stands third in interceptions with 16, the best in that category in the East Division.

Seven of these interceptions are credited to Chris Thompson, a native of New Orleans. Only B.C.’s Barron Miles, with eight, has more interceptions in the CFL.

The Tiger-Cats are coming into Montreal with playoff hopes but we wouldn’t bet on them sweeping this home-and-away series.

                Pick: Montreal

Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-5) at Calgary Stampeders (9-5) (Calgary -6.5)

Calgary and the Riders are meeting for the third time this season. The Stampeders won the first contest last July in Regina but lost 37-34 last weekend.

Michael Bishop completed 20 of the 27 passes he attempted for 242 yards with a touchdown while Neal Hughes ran for two more scores. Henry Burris led the Stampeders offense with 29 passes completed out of 45 attempts and 311 yards gained through the air with a pair of touchdowns.

The struggling Roughriders will welcome running back Wes Cates back to the lineup and he will definitely be a factor. We doubt it will be enough against the powerful Stampeders, though.

                Pick: Calgary

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  This day in Baseball….
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 11 in Baseball History...

                  * 1911 - The first MVPs are announced and Ty Cobb receives the maximum 64 points. The NL winner is Cubs outfielder Frank Schulte, with Christy Mathewson second. Both winners receive Chalmers automobiles.

                  * 1913 - Eddie Plank tossed a two-hitter against the New York Giants to give the Philadelphia Athletics a 3-1 victory and the World Series in five games.

                  * 1925 - Walter Johnson wins his third straight World Series contest over two years, 4-0. A three-run home run by Goose Goslin followed by a solo shot by Joe Harris gives the Senators a 4-0 win and 3-1 Series advantage over the Pirates.

                  * 1943 - New York's Spud Chandler shut out the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 as the Yankees won the World Series in five games. Chandler gave up 10 hits and stranded 11 runners.

                  * 1948 - In Boston, Cleveland nips the Braves 4-3 to take the World Series in six games. Rookie lefty Gene Bearden is the pitching hero in relief.

                  * 1967 - Rico Petrocelli's two home runs led the Boston Red Sox in an 8-4 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals and forced a seventh game in the World Series.

                  * 1969 - Don Buford's leadoff home run starts a 4-1 Baltimore win over the Mets to open the World Series. Mike Cuellar bests Tom Seaver in what will be New York's only postseason loss of the year.

                  * 1971 - Brooks Robinson ties a World Series record by reaching base five straight times on three hits and two walks as Baltimore rolls over Pittsburgh, 11-3. The defending World Champion Orioles hold a 2-0 Series advantage.

                  * 1972 - Bob Moose's wild pitch in the ninth inning allowed George Foster to score the winning run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 and captured the NLCS in the fifth game.

                  * 1973 - Catfish Hunter throws a five-hitter as Oakland beats Baltimore 3-0 in Game Five to take the AL pennant.

                  * 1975 - Boston's Luis Tiant shuts down the Big Red Machine and scores the first run as the Red Sox win the opening game of the 1975 World Series, 6-0.

                  * 1977 - The Yankees beat the Dodgers in the opening game of the World Series in 12 innings, 4-3. Willie Randolph doubles and scores the winning run on a single by Paul Blair.

                  * 1978 - The Dodgers take a 2-0 World Series lead as Ron Cey drives in all the Dodger runs and Reggie Jackson does the same for the Yankees. Bob Welch saves Burt Hooton's 4-3 win in dramatic fashion by striking out Jackson in the ninth inning.

                  * 1979 - Manny Sanguillen's pinch-hit, two-out single in the ninth inning of Game Two breaks a tie as the Pirates win, 3-2, and even the World Series.

                  * 1980 - In one of the most exciting and controversial games in playoff history, the Phillies tie the NLCS with a 10-inning 5-3 win over the Astros in Game Four. In the fourth inning, Houston is deprived of an apparent triple play when the umpires rule that pitcher Vern Ruhle traps Garry Maddox's soft line drive. In the sixth, Houston loses a run when Gary Woods leaves the base early on Luis Pujols' would-be sacrifice fly.

                  * 1981 - Steve Rogers wins Game Five of the NL East Divisional playoff for Montreal over Philadelphia by twirling a six-hit shutout and knocking in two of his team's runs in a 3-0 victory.

                  * 1985 - George Brett's four hits, including two homers, led the Kansas City Royals to 6-5 comeback victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the third game of the ALCS.

                  * 1986 - Len Dykstra's two-run home run off Dave Smith with one out in the bottom of the ninth gives the Mets a 6-5 win over the Astros and a 2-1 lead in the NLCS.

                  * 1992 - Dennis Eckersley, who saved 51 games for Oakland during the season, surrenders a two-run home run to Roberto Alomar that sends Game Four of the ALCS into extra innings. The Blue Jays go on to win 7-6 in 11 innings and take a 3-1 series edge.

                  * 1996 - With the ALCS tied at 1-1 and the game tied at 2-2, Orioles third baseman Todd Zeile fakes a throw and the ball trickles away to allow the go-ahead run to score. Cecil Fielder follows with a home run and the Yankees win, 5-2.

                  * 1997 - One of the most bizarre endings in ALCS history, the winning run scores on a botched squeeze play. With Marquis Grissom racing home from third base, Omar Vizquel bunts and misses and the ball trickles a few feet from the plate. Orioles catcher Lenny Webster thinks it's a foul ball and loafs after it as Grissom streaks home for a 2-1 Cleveland win. Baltimore starter Mike Mussina strikes out an LCS record 15 batters in seven innings in the difficult twilight at Jacobs Field, but has nothing to show for it.
