Saturday's List of 13: Top 13 storylines for '08 baseball season

        13) Astros were on 17-3 roll and only three games out of Wild Card when Hurricane Ike hit; they lost next five games, and their season was officially shot. Houston was really streaky this season.

        12) A's were nine games over .500 on July 11, but when Street blew save to Angels the game before the All-Star break, the team decided to plan for the future and dumped Harden/Blanton for prospects. What resulted was Oakland having worst record in majors since then.

        11) Arizona got off to 20-8 start, but their young players struggled after that, and once 2B Orlando Hudson went out with injury, they went in tank, despite really good starting pitching.

        10) Mets fired manager Randolph, pitching coach Peterson, started playing better, despite a bullpen that has been awful in second half.

        9) Reds-Rangers pulled off a Volquez-Hamilton trade; both players had their best-ever season. Not sure why Texas would ever trade a pitcher, but they really score a lot of runs.

        8) Detroit and Seattle both had payrolls over $100M, but both sides were terrible. Mariners didn't even sell off any of their veterans; they were asking too much in the way of prospects.

        7) Bronx Bombers missed the playoffs, despite a $200M+ payroll; the new ballpark they're getting is now being criticized for corrupt business practices-- what a shock.

        6) Pirates had their 16th straight losing season; the ultimate smaller market team even tried to help Bronx by handing them Nady/Marte for almost nothing, but that didn't help, either.

        5) Twins somehow contended all season, despite letting Hunter go as a free agent, and getting very little back in Santana trade. Liriano was in minor leagues so long, his agent complained to the union-- maybe that’s the difference in their not making the playoffs.

        4) Ichiro Suzuki got 200+ hits for the eighth straight season; his will be first-ever Hall of Fame speech with an interpreter. .

        3) Brewers tried everything to make playoffs; they traded one of the best prospects for Sabathia, they fired their manager, but the porous infield defense has really been a hindrance.

        2) Red Sox handed Joe Torre a playoff spot by trading controversial Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers, and paying his salary.

        1) Tampa Bay Rays have 91 wins as I type this; they had never won more than 70 games, had finished out of cellar once, and are simply the best baseball story since the '69 Mets. Too bad the lazy national media hasn't caught on to it yet.
