    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, September 20

There are two ranked college football matchups on Saturday, with Wake Forest playing Florida State, and LSU taking on Auburn. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

No. 6 LSU and No. 10 Auburn are a combined 5-0 this season, although Auburn barely edged Mississippi State by a ridiculous score of 3-2 last week (they'd previously beaten Louisiana-Monroe and Southern Miss). LSU scored 41 points in each of their first two games, easily getting past both Appalachian State and North Texas. The oddsmakers have the Tigers of LSU pegged as 2.5-point favorites against the Tigers of Auburn.

No. 18 Wake Forest and No. 24 Florida State are both unbeaten as well. The Demon Deacons, however, just slipped past Mississippi 30-28 last week after topping Baylor 41-13 in their opener. The Seminoles have trounced cupcakes Western Carolina 69-0 and Chattanooga 46-7 over their first two contests. The oddsmakers like Florida State in this one, as they've been listed as 5-point favorites to knock off the Demon Deacons.

Kickoff for Wake Forest/Florida State is 7:00pm ET, and for LSU/Auburn it's 7:45pm ET.

    Other Notable Events

No. 1 USC is sitting out this week, but there are plenty of other ranked teams in action. The rundown: No. 3 Georgia (-7) at Arizona State, No. 4 Florida (-7.5) at Tennessee, Buffalo at No. 5 Missouri (-34.5), Rice at No. 7 Texas (-29.5), No. 9 Alabama (-9) at Arkansas, Massachusetts at No. 11 Texas Tech, No. 12 South Florida (-28.5) at Florida International, Troy at No. 13 Ohio State (-20.5), Wyoming at No. 14 BYU (-28), No. 15 East Carolina (-7) at N.C. State, Temple at No. 16 Penn State (-28.5), Boise State at No. 17 Oregon (-10), Sam Houston State at No. 19 Kansas, No. 20 Utah (-9) at Air Force, South Carolina State at No. 23 Clemson, No. 25 Fresno State (-7) at Toledo.

The best pitching matchup on Saturday is in Toronto, where the Red Sox will send Jon Lester (15-5, 3.15 ERA) to the mound to face Roy Halladay (18-11, 2.77 ERA). Lester took on Halladay last Sunday as well, coming out on top in a 4-3 Boston win. Lester allowed just one earned run on four hits over eight innings in that contest. Halladay surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits over his seven innings of work.

    The Rest of the Schedule

It's Kevin Slowey (12-10, 3.66 ERA) vs. Scott Kazmir (11-7, 3.50 ERA) in the Twins/Rays game on Saturday. Rounding out the day's American League slate: Baltimore at the Yankees, Seattle at Oakland, Detroit at Cleveland, the White Sox at Kansas City, and the Angels at Texas.

Highlighting Saturday's National League schedule is Joel Pineiro (6-6, 5.24 ERA) vs. Ted Lilly (15-9, 4.13 ERA) in a Cards/Cubs battle. Also on tap in the NL: Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Houston at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia at Florida, San Diego at Washington, the Mets at Atlanta, Arizona at Colorado, and San Francisco at the Dodgers.

Finally, the WNBA playoffs continue on Saturday with New York at Connecticut and Sacramento at San Antonio, while it's Toronto at Calgary (-12.5) and British Columbia at Saskatchewan (-2.5) in the CFL, and more Ryder Cup action at Valhalla in Louisville.

    News from the Wire

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson has been missing practice time with a hamstring injury this week, but thinks he'll be ready to go Sunday . . . Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson is nursing an injury as well, with his sore toe causing some concern for the team . . . Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas is hoping he'll return from his most recent knee surgery in mid-December, but that comeback could get pushed into the new year.

    A Peek at the Future

Chris Waters (3-3, 4.75 ERA) is expected to take on Andy Pettitte (13-14, 4.57 ERA) when Baltimore and New York play the last-ever game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night . . .the Cowboys are pegged as 3-point road favorites against the Packers in the NFL's Sunday night game . . . Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards remain the 9/2 co-favorites to win the Camping World RV 400 at Dover International Speedway on Sunday.

            Previews and Picks

CFL Week 13 previews and predictions

            Saturday, September 20

Toronto Argonauts (4-7) at Calgary Stampeders (7-4) (Calgary -12 1/2)

Don Matthews probably realized last week the enormous challenge facing him to transform these Argos into a decent football team.

After the horrible loss to Winnipeg, Matthews fired Duane Clemons and Daryl Whittington and hired former Alouette Tim Strickland and defensive lineman Claude Harriott. The Don also announced that reigning CFL MVP Kerry Joseph, who got intercepted three times against the Blue Bombers, won’t be Saturday’s starter against the Stampeders.

Cody Pickett is now the Argonauts starting quarterback. Will these changes be enough to beat the Calgary Stampeders in front of their fans at McMahon Stadium? We doubt it. Especially after seeing the East division leaders, Montreal Alouettes, get stumped 41-30 last week in that same stadium.

Henry Burris threw five touchdown passes, completed 24 of 38 pass attempts for 408 yards while Ken Rambo had six catches, 116 yards and a TD. These guys will have a blast against the Argonauts. If you think the Argos got beaten ugly against Winnipeg, this could be even worse.

            Pick: Calgary

            B.C. Lions (6-5) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-3) (Saskatchewan -3)

This will be the third showdown between these two teams this season, but the first at Mosaic Stadium in Saskatchewan.

The Lions won last week against these Roughriders 28-23 after losing to them earlier in July, 26-16. In last week’s game, the Lions managed to preserve their win in the fourth quarter and Buck Pierce completed 18 of 33 for 336 yards and two touchdowns. Geroy Simon was his prime target with 142 yards receiving and a touchdown.

B.C. will attempt to prolong its two-game winning streak. In last week’s loss to the Lions, Michael Bishop had 298 yards passing with one touchdown. But the Lions seem more powerful as the season progresses and they can put a lot of points on the board in little time. Their biggest concern is that they also can allow too many points in very little time.

We still think they will surprise the oddsmakers in this one and come out victorious in Regina.

            Pick: B.C.

            Sunday, September 21

Edmonton Eskimos (7-4) at Montreal Alouettes (7-4) (Montreal -3)

On paper, these two teams compare quite well with one major difference: Montreal’s running game is more efficient when Avon Cobourne is in the lineup. His status is questionable at this point, coach Trestman insisting that he won’t play if he is not 100 percent healthy after nursing a ankle injury.

The Eskimos will have to do without A.J. Harris, Garrick Jones and possibly Kelly Campbell. Ricky Ray has been erratic in his last two games and he’s never really had success against the Alouettes in Montreal’s Percival-Molson Stadium.

But Montreal’s defense was horrible in Calgary, giving Henry Burris all the time he needed to throw five touchdown passes to five different receivers with more than 400 yards gained throwing the ball. The Alouettes’ secondary can’t be that generous with Ray, one of the best gunslingers in the CFL, who averages more than nine yards on each of his completed passes.

The Alouettes cornerbacks will have to keep an eye on Kelly Campbell and Kamau Peterson, both in the top six in the league among wide receivers. Good news is for the Als that Free Safety Etienne Boulay will get his first start this season, since he was released from the New York Jets training camp. But Montreal native and Edmonton coach Danny Maciocia love to play against the Alouettes and this should make for a very exciting Sunday afternoon game.

That said, the Alouettes should win it, if only to redeem themselves from Friday night embarrassing loss to Calgary.

            Pick: Montreal

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                MLB

                Saturday, September 20

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking Starting Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Saturday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                Streaking

Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox (15-3, 3.15 ERA)

Lester gave the Jays fits in his most recent appearance. The lefty went eight innings and gave up just one run on four hits in a 4-3 win at Fenway. Lester’s performance trumped Toronto ace Roy Halladay, who he will face off with again Saturday.

Lester is 5-4 in 15 road starts (compared to 10-1 at home) this season and is 2-2 with a 3.23 ERA in four career appearances versus the Blue Jays.

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (16-7, 3.73 ERA)

Floyd proved he has a short memory when he rebounded from a tough loss with a victory over the Yankees in New York. The right hander limited the damage of nine hits, pitching well in a pinch, to give up just two runs in seven innings.

Floyd is 6-1 in his last 10 starts and has three days rest heading into Kansas City. He is 1-1 with an ERA just over two versus the Royals this season.

                Slumping

Carlos Silva, Seattle Mariners (4-15, 6.42 ERA)

Silva’s last win was nearly two months ago and since that fateful day in June, the M’s righty is 0-6 with four no decisions. Not all those losses can be rooted back to Silva. He’s put together some solid showings but hasn’t received the support at the plate from a stumbling Seattle squad.

Silva is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA against Oakland this season. He is 6-4 in his last 10 starts versus the Athletics stemming back to his days with the Twins.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (10-16, 4.78)

Verlander’s struggles are starting to stir up concerns. After two seasons of near-perfect pitching, the Tigers’ stud just isn’t the same arm and is 0-3 in his last four starts in which he is posting an 8.10 ERA.

He is 1-4 with an ERA over six against Cleveland this season and is a dismal 4-9 with 6.59 ERA in 14 career starts versus the Tribe.

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals (+130, 9)

The White Sox will try to extend their 2 1/2-game division lead on Saturday night when they continue a weekend series with the Kansas City Royals.

The White Sox's Gavin Floyd (16-7, 3.73 ERA) has been unbeatable in the second half on the road. In six starts after losing on July 11 in Texas, the right-hander is 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA. He's given up two runs of less in each of his last five appearances, including against the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

Floyd surrendered two runs, nine hits, struck out four and didn't walk a batter over seven innings in Chicago's 6-2 win. The turning point came in the fifth when Floyd threw 12 pitches to Jason Giambi with the bases loaded before striking him out to end the inning.

When starting on three days' rest, Floyd has a 7.84 ERA but hasn't gotten a decision in two appearances. He's 1-2 with a 2.84 ERA in three career starts against Kansas City.

Floyd's six wins after the All-Star break trail only Mark Buehrle (8), who earned the victory Friday, for the team lead.

Kansas City answers with Kyle Davies (7-7, 4.32 ERA), who will try to set a new career high for wins in a season. The right-hander also won seven games as a rookie for Atlanta in 2005, and combined with the Braves and Royals last year.

Davies also looks to post wins in consecutive starts for the first time since July 27-Aug. 2. He scattered four hits over eight innings, didn't issue a walk and tied his career high with eight strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Seattle on Tuesday.

                  Pick: White Sox

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (-145, 11)

Los Angeles (94-59) beat Texas (75-79) 15-13 on Friday as the teams combined for 41 hits, 22 by the Angels. Garret Anderson was 4-for-6 while Torii Hunter homered and drove in four runs for Los Angeles, which has already clinched the AL West.

The Angels led 7-0 until the Rangers scored nine runs on nine hits in the bottom of the third off starter Jon Garland. Milton Bradley was the only starter without a hit, going 0-for-5 with four strikeouts.

The season series between the teams continued to be high scoring. The Angels have averaged 6.0 runs, winning nine of the 14 meetings, while the Rangers have averaged 5.7 runs.

The win was the Angels' ninth in the last 12 games. Entering Saturday, they are the only team that has clinched a playoff spot, and now Los Angeles is focused on getting healthy.

Manager Mike Scioscia said Friday that outfielders Vladimir Guerrero (right knee irritation) and Juan Rivera (strained right hip flexor) should play this weekend.

Guerrero, who has been out since leaving a game on Sept. 12, and Rivera, who has been sidelined since Sept. 13, both ran in the outfield on Friday. Guerrero leads the Angels with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs.

                  Pick: Angels

St. Louis at Chicago Cubs (3:55 p.m. EDT). Ted Lilly and the NL Central-leading Cubs host Joel Pineiro and the Cardinals in the second game of a weekend series. Lilly is 2-0 with a 2.54 ERA in four starts against St. Louis this season.

                    STARS

                    Friday

                    - Cameron Maybin, Marlins, had four hits for the second consecutive game and tied a franchise record by reaching base in 10 consecutive plate appearances to help Florida beat Philadelphia 14-8 for its ninth straight win, which tied a team mark.

                    - Adam Kennedy, Cardinals, hit a grand slam and matched his career high with four hits while driving in five runs during a 12-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

                    - Carlos Pena, Rays, homered and drove in four runs—with help from baseball's first replay reversal- to lead Tampa Bay past Minnesota 11-1.

                    - Daniel Murphy, Mets, delivered a pinch-hit double that drove in the tiebreaking runs and helped New York regain first place in the NL East with a 9-5 win at Atlanta.

                    - Barry Zito, Giants, took a shutout into the eighth inning and beat Greg Maddux in San Francisco's 7-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

                    - Torii Hunter, Angels, homered and drove in four runs in a 15-13 win at Texas.

                    READY TO CELEBRATE

Tampa Bay routed Minnesota 11-1 to close in on the club's first playoff berth. The AL East leaders moved within one win of clinching at least the wild card and remained 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Boston. The only big league franchise without a playoff appearance, the Rays (91-61) had never won more than 70 games in a season since their inception in 1998. Even if they lose Saturday, the Rays could earn a postseason spot with losses by the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees.

                    ZEE-NIED

After pitching the Cubs' first no-hitter in 36 years Sunday against Houston in Milwaukee, Carlos Zambrano (14-6) allowed eight runs and six hits in 1 2-3 innings of a 12-6 loss to St. Louis. It was his shortest outing in two years and the shortest start by a pitcher coming off a no-hitter since St. Louis' Bob Forsch lasted one inning at Pittsburgh in April 1978, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                    SWINGING AWAY

Gary Sheffield and Fausto Carmona exchanged punches on the infield during a bench-clearing brawl between Detroit and Cleveland. In the seventh inning, Carmona hit Sheffield in the left arm with a pitch. The Tigers' designated hitter walked slowly to first base, carrying his bat with him, glaring at Carmona and exchanging words with the right-hander. When Carmona threw over to first on a pickoff attempt, Sheffield motioned and yelled at him to throw the ball to the plate. Carmona took a step toward first base, yelled, and Sheffield charged the mound. Both players threw punches before Carmona got Sheffield in a headlock and began landing punches. Players and coaches from both dugouts and bullpens ran onto the field, but no other punches appeared to be thrown before order was restored. Sheffield and Carmona were ejected, along with Indians catcher Victor Martinez and Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco. Carmona also hit Sheffield with a pitch on April 17 in a game that included five hit batters.

                    SWING AND A MISS

Oakland designated hitter Jack Cust struck out for the 186th and 187th time this season, breaking the AL record, in a 2-0 victory over Seattle. Rob Deer of Milwaukee previously held the AL mark with 186 whiffs in 1987. Philadelphia's Ryan Howard set the major league record last season with 199 strikeouts.

                    FALLING FLAT

Joey Votto and Jay Bruce each hit two home runs and Cincinnati cracked seven homers in all for an 11-2 victory over the free-falling Brewers. Milwaukee's 14th loss in 18 September games left the Cubs one victory—or a Brewers loss— from clinching the NL Central title. Jeff Suppan (10-10), who was 5-0 in August but is 0-3 while allowing 19 earned runs in 16 1-3 innings in September, lasted only two innings.

                    GRAND ENTRANCE

Alexei Ramirez of the Chicago White Sox tied an AL rookie record with his third grand slam this season in a 9-4 victory at Kansas City. Shane Spencer also hit three for the New York Yankees in 1998. It was Chicago's 11th slam this season, tying the club mark set in 2006.

                    SNAPPED

Kansas City's 9-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox ended the Royals' seven-game winning streak, their longest since starting the 2003 season 9-0. - Philadelphia's season-best seven-game winning streak was snapped with a 14-8 loss at Florida that knocked the Phillies out of first place in the NL East. - Randy Wolf allowed three hits in seven innings and Houston stopped a five-game skid with a 5-1 victory at Pittsburgh.

                    SLUGFEST

The Los Angeles Angels set seasons highs for runs and hits (22) in a 15-13 victory at Texas. The AL West champions led 7-0 until the Rangers scored nine runs on nine hits in the third. That was the most hits and runs in an inning against the Angels since May 19, 2006, when the Dodgers had 10 runs in one inning and 10 hits in another in a 16-3 victory. Garret Anderson had four hits for the Angels in this one, while Josh Hamilton had four of the Rangers' 19 hits. The 41 combined hits were the most in an AL game this season. It also was the second-highest scoring game in the AL this year behind Texas' 19-17 loss at Boston on Aug. 12.

                    COMING UP EMPTY

Dana Eveland (9-8) pitched seven strong innings and Oakland beat Seattle 2-0, handing the Mariners their ninth straight loss. The Mariners, shut out for the second consecutive game, haven't scored in 26 innings. They have been blanked four times this season with Felix Hernandez (9-11) on the mound and 12 times overall. Seattle loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before Brad Ziegler got Yuniesky Betancourt to ground out, ending a game that lasted 2 hours, 5 minutes.

                    STRONG STARTS

Edwin Jackson (12-11) allowed one run and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings of Tampa Bay's 11-1 victory over Minnesota. - Mark Buehrle pitched six effective innings on three days' rest to lead the Chicago White Sox over Kansas City 9-4. Buehrle (14-11) is 3-0 in four September starts and 6-1 in his past nine.

                    SPEAKING

"They all end eventually. It's not cricket."-San Diego manager Bud Black after his team needed 5 hours to beat Washington 11-6 in 14 innings, its third-longest game this season. The Padres lost a 22-inning marathon to Colorado on April 17 and beat Cincinnati in 18 innings on May 25.
