    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, August 28

It's a Super Bowl rematch - preseason style - on Thursday night as the champion New York Giants play host to the New England Patriots. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup…

    Event of the day . . .

The Giants derailed the Patriots' perfect season last year, and they get a chance to knock them for a loss again when the two teams meet at Giants Stadium on Thursday.

Of course, New York will be without two key defensive players when they take on New England. Osi Umenyiora's knee injury will see him placed on injured reserve and miss the entire season. Michael Strahan retired after the Super Bowl victory, and despite the team's overtures he's not coming back this year to fill in for the injured Umenyiora.

The Patriots are still dealing with Tom Brady's foot injury, although its severity has not been thoroughly discussed by the team. Brady says he'll be ready for the Pats' Week 1 contest, but it seems unlikely that he'll play on Thursday night. The oddsmakers have the Giants pegged as 2-point home favorites, with the game's total listed at 36 points.

    Non-event of the day . . .

Aaron Harang and Brandon Backe have combined for 25 losses already this season, and each of them will be looking to avoid yet another defeat on Thursday afternoon when the Astros play host to the Reds. Harang is 4-13 with a 5.35 ERA so far on the year, while Backe has a slightly better record (8-12) but an even higher ERA (5.54).

    Also on the schedule . . .

There are a dozen more National Football League contests on Thursday night as the league winds down its exhibition slate: Detroit at Buffalo, Carolina at Pittsburgh, Jacksonville at Washington, Atlanta at Baltimore, Cincinnati at Indianapolis, the Jets at Philadelphia, Tennessee at Green Bay, St. Louis at Kansas City, Chicago at Cleveland, Minnesota at Dallas, Miami at New Orleans, and Tampa Bay at Houston.

College football kicks off its season on Thursday night, but with just one ranked team in action - No. 23 Wake Forest takes on Baylor as a 12-point favorite. The other games on the board: UTEP vs. Buffalo (-3), Vanderbilt vs. Miami-Ohio (-3.5), North Carolina State vs. South Carolina (-13.5), Oregon State (-3) vs. Stanford, Troy (-6.5) vs. Middle Tenn.

There are seven other games on the diamond on a light Thursday schedule, including Jon Lester (12-5, 3.49 ERA) vs. Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.45 ERA) in the BoSox/Yankees matchup. In other AL action it's Toronto at Tampa Bay, Texas at the Angels, and Minnesota at Oakland. Meanwhile, the rest of the National League schedule includes Florida at Atlanta, the Dodgers at Washington, and finally Philadelphia at the Cubs.

As well, the WNBA returns from its Olympic break with five games on Thursday night. Connecticut and Indiana get things underway at 7:00pm ET, followed by Chicago at New York a half hour later. Three western contests then round out the night's slate: San Antonio at Phoenix, Houston at Seattle, and then finally Sacramento at Los Angeles.

    News from the wire . . .

Nationals outfielder Austin Kearns was placed on the disabled list with a foot injury on Tuesday; Elijah Dukes was activated to take his place on the roster . . . Diamondbacks starting pitcher Brandon Webb was knocked around by the Dodgers on Tuesday night and was denied his 20th win of the season . . . Major League Baseball will start to use instant replay on Thursday, allowing umpires to check questionable home run calls.

    Peek at the future . . .

There are three preseason NFL games on Friday: Denver at Arizona, San Diego at San Francisco, and Oakland at Seattle . . . the two college football matchups on Friday are Temple at Army and SMU at Rice . . . the Sprint Cup Series returns with the Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway on Sunday night; the circuit's pre-Chase schedule concludes with the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway on September 6.

      Six-pack for Thursday

-- Cleveland is playing great ball, winning ten games in row.

-- Ruggiano made like Joe Rudi in '72 Series, with great catch leaping up against leftfield wall for last out of Rays' 1-0 win.

-- Delgado hit two taters as Mets rallied late to beat Phillies and move back into first in NL East.

-- Cardinals beat Milwaukee bullpen 5-3, now trail Brewers by 3.5 games in Wild Card race.

-- Twins ended brief skid with tough 6-5 win at Seattle.

-- No one wants to win NL West; Arizona had 4-0 lead in 7th but lost at Petco, while Dodgers lost sixth game in row, 5-4 at hapless Washington. Colorado is still just six games out.

Thursday's List of 13: Knowledge for football, college........

        13) New timing rules in college football this season; 0:40 from end of previous play, rather than 0:25 from time ball is spotted. Will the NFL-like rules cheat the college game of action?

        12) Look out ACC, Paul Johnson won at Navy, and he'll win at Georgia Tech. Just a matter of time.

        11) College football has some of the most amazing parties you have ever seen; in Winnebagos, on tailgates in parking lots. People love to drink, eat and talk college football. By the way, the bars in Knoxville are very quiet on NFL Sundays, so quiet you could study in them. Not so much on Saturdays.

        10) Speaking of which, this website will be in Columbia for the Tennessee-South Carolina game Halloween weekend; it looks like we also might be at the Brown-Holy Cross game October 11, though thats not etched in stone yet.

        9) Rick Neuheisel will do well at UCLA, if he can keep his QBs in one piece. His recruiting battles against Pete Carroll and the Trojans might be better than their games, at least to start.

        8) Can't wait to hear the fight songs, though we might not hear the Michigan song as much as usual this year. Seems like they don't have the right QB yet to run the spread offense.

        7) Saturday mornings are McDonald's sausage biscuits and College GameDay, America's second-best pre-game show (nod surprisingly goes to Speed Channel's pre-NASCAR show). It will be great to see ol' Lee Corso put on some mascot's head just before the games start at noon Saturday.

        6) Will anyone in the lame Big 11 step up and challenge Ohio State? Michigan State looks like it has the best chance. It will not be much fun if Buckeyes get whacked in national title tilt once again. Ohio State-USC September 13 promises to be fun.

        5) Amazing to me that NBC keeps throwing money at a Notre Dame program that hasn't won a bowl game in 14 years. Funny how Charlie Weis got 10-year deal from Irish for having same record in South Bend that got Ty Willingham fired.

        4) Clemson hasn't won ACC title since Florida State joined the league; with their abundance of talent at RB/WR, this should be the year. Tigers' opener with Alabama is intriguing.

        3) Nick Saban brings his Crimson Tide to LSU November 8, not a good day to be wearing any shade of red in Baton Rouge.

        2) You think I was going to get thru this whole article without a mention of the USC Song Girls? Hell no. As friend of mine said long time ago, as we sat by the fountains on a hot spring day at UAlbany, "...ahhhhh, college." with a big grin on his face.

        1) College football Saturdays start with sausage biscuits in the morning, end with the Pac-10 game at Graney's late at night by the jukebox. It is bands, mascots, Keth Jackson, Ron Franklin, and a whole lot more. Its great to have an old friend back.

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 8:05 PM ET]

Phillies: Cole Hamels has emerged victorious in his last two starts, allowing just three runs over 15 innings. Hamels has been tough on the road this season, going 5-2 with a 3.40 ERA. Hamels has been extremely consistent over his last 10 starts, allowing three runs or less eight times. However, because of little run support from the Phillies offense, Hamels has only recorded three wins over that span. The UNDER is 4-1 in Hamels last five road starts.

Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-1 in Philadelphia's last 10 Thursday games.

Key Injuries - OF Geoff Jenkins (.246; hip) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-145): Ryan Dempster has won three consecutive starts, and he’s been a machine in his last 10 outings, giving up more than two runs just once. Overall, the Cubs are 7-3 the last 10 times Dempster has taken the mound. He’s also almost unbeatable at home, going 12-2 with an impressive 2.66 ERA. Despite his strong efforts, the OVER has cashed in each of Dempster’s last two starts.

Cubs are 5-0 in their last 5 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-3-2 in the last 13 meetings at Chicago.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                SCOREBOARD

                Thursday, Aug. 28

Philadelphia at Chicago Cubs (8:05 p.m. EDT). The Phillies' Cole Hamels (11-8, 3.20 ERA) matches up with the Cubs' Ryan Dempster (15-5, 2.85) when two teams with playoff aspirations meet at Wrigley Field.

                STARS

                Wednesday

                - Ryan Ludwick, Cardinals, went 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a 5-3 victory over Milwaukee.

                - Brian Roberts, Orioles, had three RBIs and his AL-leading 46th double in an 11-3 win over the White Sox.

                - Tim Lincecum, Giants, struck out 10 to boost his majors-leading total to 210 in a 4-1 win over Colorado.

                - Josh Johnson, Marlins, threw a four-hitter for his first career complete game in a 4-1 win over the Braves.

                - Jody Gerut, Padres, went 3-for-4, including the go-ahead single in the eighth inning of a 5-4 win over Arizona.

                DODGERS BLUE

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a season-high sixth straight game, 5-4 against the lowly Washington Nationals. They've lost eight straight road games for the first time since 2005. Los Angeles has scored just 10 runs during the losing streak, accentuated by failing to get even when down by a run with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning. In just two pitches from Nationals closer Joel Hanrahan, Matt Kemp popped out to left field.

                SENDOFF

In their final regular-season trip to Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox have outscored their longtime rivals 18-6 in the first two games of this three-game series, including an 11-3 win on Wednesday night in which Jason Bay drove in four runs and Dustin Pedroia hit a grand slam.

                RALLY CARDS

Ryan Ludwick lacked a triple for the cycle and had two RBIs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals' comeback from a three-run deficit in a 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Rebounding from a 12-0 rout Tuesday, the Cardinals scored four runs in the eighth inning and pulled within 3 1/2 games of the Brewers for the NL wild-card lead.

                STREAKY INDIANS

The Indians beat the Tigers 9-7 for their 10th straight win. They now have a 10-game winning streak and 10-game losing streak this year, the first team to have such double-digit streaks since Tampa Bay won and lost 12 in a row in 2004. The Indians also had winning and losing streaks of 10 games or more in 1931 and 1979. It's the 21st time in major league history a team has won and lost at least 10 straight games.

                SWEEP

The Texas Rangers pulled off their first three-game sweep this season, beating Kansas City 3-2 when Jarrod Saltalamacchia scooted home after pitcher Brian Bannister flubbed a popup in the seventh.

                RED RULER

Even in an off year, Houston ace Roy Oswalt knows how to beat the Cincinnati Reds. Oswalt improved to 12-9 in a 4-1 Astros win, his 22nd victory against the Reds in 23 decisions. He's won seven straight since a 5-4 loss at Cincinnati in 2006. He hasn't lost to the Reds in Houston since 2004.

                SWEPT AWAY

The Chicago Cubs turned two well-placed bunts into two runs in the seventh inning and swept yet another three-game series from the Pirates with a 2-0 victory. After scoring 26 runs in the first two games, the Cubs turned to pitching and defense for their third three-game sweep this season of the NL Central rival Pirates. The Cubs won the season series 14-4, the most victories they've have against Pittsburgh since going 15-7 in 1954.

                SPEAKING

"We're fighting some demons, the demons of the past, the rascals that have hung around us for a year.'' - Mets manager Jerry Manuel, after his team rallied for a 6-3 win over Philadelphia a night after blowing a seven-run lead and losing. New York faltered down the stretch last year, handing a playoff berth to the Phillies.

                SEASONS

                Aug. 28

1926 - Emil Levsen of the Cleveland Indians pitched two complete-game victories over the Boston Red Sox, 6-1 and 5-1. He did not strike out a batter in either game. The Indians used an identical lineup in both games.

1951 - The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated New York 2-0, snapping the Giants' 16-game winning streak. The streak enabled the Giants to cut the Dodgers 13 1/2-game lead to six.

1971 - In the nightcap of a doubleheader, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Rick Wise hit two home runs to help himself to a 7-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

1977 - Steve Garvey of Los Angeles hit three doubles and two home runs in five at-bats, leading the Dodgers to an 11-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. One of Garvey's homers was a grand slam.

1977 - In a 6-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, Nolan Ryan of the California Angels struck out 11 batters to pass the 300-strikeout plateau for the fifth time in his career.

1990 - Ryne Sandberg became the first second baseman in history to have consecutive 30-homer seasons, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 5-2 victory over the Houston Astros.

1992 - The Milwaukee Brewers set an American League record with 31 hits and 26 singles in a 22-2 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays.

1996 - The Cleveland Indians finished the season 12-0 against the Detroit Tigers to become the seventh team to sweep a season series since 1900.

Today's birthdays: Jay Witasick 28; Darren Lewis 33.
