    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, August 25

The third week of the National Football League preseason schedule concludes on Monday with the Chargers hosting the Seahawks. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup…

    Event of the day . . .

Oddsmakers like the Chargers' chances of beating the Seahawks at home on Monday night, as they've been set as 6.5-point favorites in the contest (with the total at 39.5 points). San Diego is 1-1 so far during the preseason (beating the Cowboys and losing to the Rams), but they managed to cover the posted spread in both those games. The Seahawks are 2-0 straight-up and 1-0-1 against-the-spread so far in exhibition play.

Seattle, though, isn't expected to have starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck behind center against the Chargers on Monday night. Hasselbeck hasn't seen the field for the team so far during the preseason, and he experienced more back pain during practice sessions this past week. The team is hoping he will be back on the field for Week 1.

The Chargers have health concerns of their own, as Shawne Merriman announced he has a serious knee injury and could be forced to miss the entire season. More information on that injury should come out this week. Tight end Antonio Gates, though, is getting closer to returning from his foot injury, and should be ready for the season.

    Non-event of the day . . .

Jeff Francis was 17-9 for the Rockies last season, but this year he'll be hard-pressed to even get half that many victories. The lefthander enters Monday's game against fellow NL West weakling San Francisco with a 3-8 record and a 5.52 ERA, and he hasn't earned a win since June 18. The Giants will counter with Matt Cain (8-9, 3.52 ERA).

    Also on the schedule . . .

There are four other games on the National League schedule for Monday: the Cubs at Pittsburgh, the Dodgers at Philadelphia, Houston at the Mets, and Arizona at San Diego. Dan Haren (14-6, 3.12 ERA) is expected to take on Jake Peavy (9-9, 2.84 ERA) in that D-Backs/Padres game; they faced each other in an August 20 Arizona win.

Over in the American League on Monday it'll be the White Sox at Baltimore, Cleveland at Detroit, Texas at Kansas City, Oakland at the Angels, and Minnesota at Seattle. Francisco Liriano (4-3, 4.24 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball for the Twins in that last contest; the lefthander has won each of his four starts since returning from the minors.

    News from the wire . . .

The Blue Jays sent starting pitcher Shaun Marcum to the minor leagues, replacing him with John Parrish . . . Yankees starting pitcher Carl Pavano made his long-awaited return against the Orioles on Saturday night, giving up three earned runs on seven hits over five innings in a win . . . Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington solidified his hold on the team's starting gig with a good performance against the Chiefs on Saturday.

    Peek at the future . . .

Three key divisional battles will get underway on Tuesday, with the Red Sox taking on the Yankees, the Mets playing in Philadelphia, and the Cardinals getting a visit from the Brewers . . . there are 13 more NFL preseason games on Thursday, with the final three exhibition contests of the year being played on Friday . . . the second PGA Tour playoff tournament, the Deutsche Bank Championship, will get going on Thursday morning.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Pedro Felix hit 11th inning walkoff homer to give Phillies a 5-2 win over LA, moving Phils within half-game of Mets.

-- Rich Harden against the Nationals doesn't seem fair.

-- Brewers won another Sabathia start Sunday; he only went six innings (96 PT) but Milwaukee won 4-3.

-- Only 11 of 30 starting pitchers got decisions Sunday, as bullpens become more critical with September approaching.

-- Hawai'ian kids were down 5-1 in last inning of US Final, but rallied to win 7-5, then beat Mexico to win Little League WS.

-- We won't be giving out analysis of the last week of NFL's preseason; it is bad idea to invest in these very meaningless games. We are starting college football analysis this week.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

        13) No disrespect to Elrick Woods, the greatest golfer ever, but the tournaments without him are more fun to watch, just more competitive. Garcia, Singh both drained 16-foot putts on 18 to keep their playoff going-- Vijay won on second extra hole.

        12) You know Sergio and Vijay are really rich when they laugh and congratulate each other after they make putts. When guy who is struggling sees his opponent make a long putt, he ain't laughing, thats for sure.

        11) Good news for all Arizona Cardinal fans, as two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner will be named starting QB for the Redbirds. Atlanta Falcon rookie Matt Ryan is getting Opening Day nod against the Lions. Doesn't say much for Joey Harrington.

        10) Mets are paying Luis Castillo $25M for four years to play second base, but now that he is ready to come off the DL, he told team he isn't ready and they shouldn't activate him. Bet he is healthy enough to cash those hefty checks.

        9) In stretch that overlapped Friday/Saturday games, Houston pitchers retired 34 consecutive Mets, equivalent of a 11-inning perfect game. Astros surprisingly took two of three at Shea.

        8) Mets have pitching issues; John Maine may be done for the season with shoulder issues, and Mike Pelfrey is only going to pitch once a week the rest of the season.

        7) In three games against Mets this weekend, Ty Wigginton hit 1st/6th/4th in lineup. Don't see many guys hit leadoff and cleanup in same series. Wigginton is a versatile guy.

        6) In his last 11 games, Jimmy Rollins is 4-46, with no RBI and only three runs scored. Safe to say he got booed Sunday.

        5) Bronx-Baltimore game Sunday was 4:01 nightmare; starting pitchers combined to make 193 pitches to get 21 outs.

        4) Since April 6, Dodgers have been tied for first with Arizona ten different times, but have yet to pass Snakes in NL West. They're just 11-11 since trading for Manny Ramirez.

        3) Two years ago, Tampa Bay won two road games after their All-Star break; this year, the Rays are 32-32 away from home.

        2) Bad news for New York Giants, who lost Osi Umenyiora for season Saturday night with a knee injury.

        1) Finally found out who female swimmer was last week; up on the medal stand, she had this radiant look on her face as they played the German national anthem, happier than any person I had ever seen. Britta Steffen of Germany is her name-- to me, hers was best moment of the Olympics.

              Monday, August 25

I'm not a big fan of investing in summer games, but people have asked for some insight so here goes, as little as it is............

-- Tomlinson doesn't play preseason games; Merriman has two torn knee ligaments, so things aren't looking up for San Diego, as season of high expectations begins. Both teams should put best foot forward here, as last preseason game will be on a very short work week, and regulars won't play much. Chargers have better backup QBs. Good game not to invest in.

                        LONG TIME COMIN'

Brandon Duckworth tossed five shaky innings for his first major league win as a starter in more than two years, helping Kansas City beat Detroit 7-3 to end a seven-game skid. The Cubs' acquisition of Rich Harden has paid off considerably. FUTURE IS BRIGHT

This is what the Indians were looking for when they acquired Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals last month. Even though he got a no-decision in a 4-3 Cleveland win, Reyes pitched seven strong innings and left with a 3-1 lead. The right-hander who won a World Series game for St. Louis in 2006 threw a season-high 107 pitches, allowing one run and four hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

"I have a bunch of guys that just gave their hearts and souls to that game, and I hope you understand that. I wish I would have had about 15 more minutes to sit out there with my team instead of come out here as quickly as I did. That's how tough it is for me to process.'' - Orioles manager Dave Trembley, after an 8-7 loss to the Yankees.

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates (+180, 8 1/2)

As the Cubs won their eighth straight series and are the first team to 80 wins, the risk is usually high when investing on the Northsiders, even on the road. Thankfully, with Yankee castoff Jeff Karstens (2-2, 2.25) throwing well since being traded, the Cubs find themselves with a respectable number tonight considering they're playing the lowly Pirates. With all the pitching problems they last few seasons for the Yankees, you have to think their scouts saw something they were not enamored with in the 25-year-old, while Chicago should be looking for revenge after he opened his Buco career by shutting them out in six innings of work. Speaking of Lou's boys, with the Brew Crew continuing to pull out the magic rabbit, they can not afford to lose focus as home-field means more to them than most in the postseason. While Ted Lilly (12-7, 4.25) has had his struggles against Pittsburgh this season (three starts – 5.63), he opened August against them and looked much better with Nady and Bay gone (6.1 innings, one earned run). Through August he's sporting a 3.04 ERA with opponents only hitting .235. Too many youngsters looking for time and too many proven vets trying to out slug each other for the Cubbies to look flat this Monday.

                              Pick: Chicago Cubs

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres (+100, 6 1/2)

These two aces, Dan Haren (14-6, 3.12) and Jake Peavy (9-9, 2.84), just met Wednesday in what was supposed to be a classic pitchers duel only to see both men get shelled and chased early. They will be psyched for a little redemption and play in pitcher-party Petco tonight (MLB overall ERA 4.28 – MLB ERA in San Diego 3.60), Haren is coming off his lowest pitch total of the season while Peavy's count was his lowest since May. And it's not like we're talking about two offensive juggernauts here. Both teams rank in the bottom six of MLB in batting average and are built for low-scoring affairs. Especially starting a new series on pitcher-friendly Monday, tough not to think we see a 3-2 contest this evening.

                              Pick: Under
