    SCOREBOARD

    Thursday, Aug. 21

Kansas City at Cleveland (12:05 p.m. EDT). Indians All-Star Cliff Lee (17-2, 2.43 ERA) goes for AL-leading victory No. 18.

    STARS

    Wednesday

    - Mike Pelfrey, Mets, allowed three hits and three runs in his first complete game, a 6-3 victory over the Braves.

    - A.J. Pierzynski, White Sox, went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs in a 15-3 victory over the Mariners.

    - J.J. Hardy, Brewers, homered and drove in a pair in a 5-2 win over the Astros.

    - Brett Myers, Phillies, pitched a six-hitter in his sixth start since being recalled from the minors on July 20, striking out nine in a 4-0 win over the Nationals.

    - Derek Jeter, Yankees, went 3-for-5 with a homer and a pair of RBIs in a 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays.

    - Kevin Millwood, Rangers, gave up one run and six hits in a complete-game, 9-1 win over the punchless Tigers.

    ANGELIC NUMBERS

Given a final chance to extend his hitting streak to 23 games, Garret Anderson delivered for the Angels with a ninth-inning infield single that drove in the winning run in a 5-4 victory over Tampa Bay. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for the Angels, his major league-leading and club- record 48th save.

    JUNIOR GOES DEEP

Ken Griffey Jr. hit one of Chicago's four homers to move into a tie with Sammy Sosa for fifth on the career list, helping the White Sox to a 15-3 win over Seattle. Griffey's two-run drive in the second inning was his first since Chicago acquired him from Cincinnati on July 31, and No. 609 for his career.

    A-NOTHER LOST SERIES

The A's 3-1 loss to Minnesota gave them an Oakland-record 11 straight series defeats. The last time the A's lost 11 series in a row was 1960, when they played in Kansas City. The Twins, by contrast, won their 11th consecutive home series, improving to 30-9 at the Metrodome since June 1 in their last home game until Sept. 5. They play 14 straight on the road, the longest trip the team has had since 1969.

    NOT SO FAST

The Marlins were feeling pretty good after John Baker hit a pinch three-run homer in the ninth inning to knot their game against the Giants at 5-all. But reliever Matt Lindstrom walked Dave Roberts, gave up a single to Randy Winn and intentionally walked Aaron Rowand, loading the bases for Bengie Molina. His sacrifice fly in the ninth gave San Francisco the win.

    REY-ES OF HOPE

Seeking another option for their suspect bullpen, the Mets agreed with right-hander Al Reyes on a minor league contract. Reyes closed games for Tampa Bay last year, earning a career-high 26 saves in 30 chances. This season, the 38-year-old Reyes was on the disabled list twice with shoulder injuries and was 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA in 26 outings before being released Monday after rejecting a minor league assignment. He'll help out a bullpen missing closer Billy Wagner.

    DEAR FANS

The Reds explained why they traded stars Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn and ask for patience in a letter sent to fans this week. The letter was sent by e-mail and posted on the team Web site, and was signed by owner Bob Castellini and general manager Walt Jocketty. It states the team is building with young talent and believes the trades were important for future success.

    HIGH AND TIGHT

Kansas City outfielder Mitch Maier left in the fifth inning of an 8-5 loss to Cleveland after getting hit in the face by a pitch from Indians starter Zach Jackson. Maier immediately crumpled to the ground, and manager Trey Hillman and team trainers came out to check on him. Maier walked off the field and was taken to a hospital for X-rays, which revealed three broken bones below his right eye.

    SPEAKING

"We've been around for a lot of things, good times, bad times. We understand there's a sense of urgency but I think everyone understands that. ... It's our job to go out and try to prove people wrong.'' - Yankees captain Derek Jeter, on the pressure of trying to reach the postseason.

Hot Lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs

While the naysayers will tell you Josh Fogg (2-5, 7.71) has a much better ERA on the road, those in the know will whisper his one trip to Chicago this year was a little shaky (two innings, nine earned runs). Honestly, nobody with double-digit starts has looked more like a batting practice pitcher than the Fogginator, and today he faces a Cubbie squad looking to rebound from a rare home loss and another Brew Crew win. Throw in the last evening for the young Reds to enjoy the Wrigleyville nightlife yesterday, and we don't even have to mention Big Z will be fired up looking to shake his worst three game stretch of the season. Considering the number is close to Chipper's average at the All-Star break, don't even blink an eye giving up 1 1/2 runs as Lou's boys will explode for a crooked number more than once this afternoon.

            Pick: Cubs

Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants

The Fish desperately need this game to keep pace in the East, while the Giants desperately need to stop playing 36-year-olds Dave Roberts and Rich Aurilla. Throw in San Fran rookie Matt Palmer's second career start (two innings, six earned runs) and a fresh Josh Johnson (August: 2-0, 2.37) toeing the rubber for Florida, and the books might as well pull this one off the board. As mentioned Tuesday, the day off on Monday enabled the young Marlins to regroup and set their goals on dominating out West. While the Giants come from behind victory was disappointing for them yesterday, tough to see one of the worst home-teams in the league duplicate the feat.

            Pick: Marlins

            Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies

The chalk plays today may sound cheesy, but with the playoffs on the horizon for some and youth movements for others, the results can often turn August into a goldmine. While Nats surprise hurler Tim Redding was a Vegas money-man early, he's tired in August (three starts -7.31) and has nobody in the lineup to help him out. As for the soft-tossing Jamie Moyer, he's looked stronger in August (2.50 ERA) and will be facing a lost bunch of AAA talent in the mist of a 12-game losing streak. If your friends ride you for another chalk call, give up the 1 1/2 runs and you'll sleep much easier.

            Pick: Phillies

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays [YES | 7:07 PM ET]

Yankees: After a blazing start with the Yankees, Sidney Ponson has come back to earth a little bit over his last three starts, allowing 20 hits and nine runs in 20 innings of work. Overall, the Yankees are 2-3 in Ponson’s last five starts. Ponson has a weird history with the Blue Jays. He’s just 7-10 with a 4.59 ERA overall. But on the other hand, he has pitched six complete games against Toronto. The UNDER is 4-0 in Ponson’s last four starts.

Key Injuries – DH Hideki Matsui (.318; knee) has returned.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Blue Jays (-175, O/U 8.5): Not that it’s a surprise to anyone but Roy Halladay has been extremely consistent over his last 10 starts. In that span, the Jays ace has allowed three runs or less seven times. Halladay was masterful his last time out against the Red Sox, holding the powerful Boston lineup to one run in pitching a complete game. There aren’t many pitchers that can say they own the Yankees but Halladay is one of them. He’s 12-5 with a remarkable 2.88 ERA against the Bombers in his career. The UNDER is 7-3 in Halladay’s last 10 starts.

                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Braves: While he hasn’t pitched great overall, the Braves are a profitable 3-2 with Mike Hampton on the mound this season. Hampton had one of his best outings of the year in his last start versus the Giants, giving up just two runs over six innings. Hampton is an even 10-10 against the Mets in his career, although his ERA is an impressive 3.15. The OVER is a wise investment with Hampton on the mound. Four of his five starts this season have easily gone OVER the total.

Key Injuries – 1B Casey Kotchman (.266; bereavement list) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER – Total Play of the Day)

Mets (-210, O/U 9.5): Pedro Martinez is only 2-1 in his last six starts but he’s performed well in those outings. Martinez has only allowed 12 runs in his last 33.2 innings pitched but the Mets haven’t given him much run support, going 3-3 overall during that stretch. Pedro has faced the Braves 21 times in his career, going 11-9 with a solid 3.54 ERA. Surprisingly, the OVER is 4-2 in Martinez’s last six starts.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 7

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET]

Padres: Chad Reineke gets the call tonight after winning his first Major League start against the Phillies. Reineke wasn’t great in that game, allowing three runs over five innings, but he was helped out by the Padres offense scoring eight runs. Reineke struck out five in his first start, although he did walk three batters as well. Reineke will be making his first-ever road start tonight.

Key Injuries – C Nick Hundley (.198; ankle) has returned.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Diamondbacks (-320, O/U 8): Brandon Webb’s quest for another CY Young Award continues tonight. Webb has been close to unhittable during his five-game winning streak, allowing just eight runs over 38 innings of work. As a matter of fact, Webb has only given up a single run in four of his last six starts. But if there’s one team Webb doesn’t like seeing, it’s the Padres. He’s just 5-7 in 20 career starts against San Diego. The UNDER is 3-1 in Webb’s last four starts.

Key Injuries – 1B Conor Jackson (.032; rest) has returned.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 5

                  Thursday, August 21

Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-1) at Edmonton Eskimos (4-3) (Edmonton by 2.5)

Both teams are coming off a bye week and an expected crowd of 50,000 will be cheering the Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium. This makes the Eskimos a interesting bet this week, specially knowing that they rarely lose at home and the Roughriders only won five times in their last 21 visits in Edmonton. Furthermore, the Roughriders have plagued with injuries and Edmonton’s quarterback Ricky Ray has three new favourite targets in Kamau Peterson, Fred Stamps and Kelly Campbell. In his last game, he threw for 436 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Peterson had two touchdown receptions in that game won by B.C. 40-34. The Roughriders also had their first lost of the season before the bye week, 30-25 to the Calgary Stampeders. Marcus Crandell threw for 259 yards, completing 20-of-33 pass attempts with two touchdowns. Go with the Eskimos on this one.

                  Pick: Edmonton

                  Friday, August 22

Calgary Stampeders (4-3) at British Columbia Lions (4-3) (British Columbia by 2.5)

Again, these two teams are coming off a bye week. In Week 7, the Stampeders won 30-25 against Saskatchewan while the Lions won against the Eskimos, 40-34. Both teams can score a lots of points but Calgary has shown great skills on the defensive side of the game, allowing only 23,71 points per game. Calgary has more passing and rushing yards than B.C., they give up less turnovers and are better stopping the run. This will be the return of Dave Dickenson at B.C. Place since he left the Lions and joined the Stampeders as a backup quarterback to Henry Burris who completed 22-of-33 attempts for 214 yards and one touchdown in Week 7. Running Back Joffrey Reynolds will also be an offensive threat for the Stampeders. Against the Roughriders, he ran for 128 yards off 24 carries with a touchdown. After a 0-2 start, the Lions, who finished first in the West four years in a row, won four of their last five games. Over the last few years, the Lions have been very tough to beat in the second half of the season. This should be a great game, but expect the Lions to prevail.

                  Pick: Lions
