    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, August 21

The PGA Tour's postseason schedule gets going Thursday morning, with golfers teeing off at The Barclays at Ridgewood Country Club. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup…

    Event of the day . . .

Tiger Woods would have been pegged as the favorite to win both The Barclays and, eventually, the FedExCup, but knee surgery will keep the world's top player out of the PGA Tour's playoffs this season. That opens the door for everyone else to pick up some cash and titles over the next few weeks, with Phil Mickelson currently listed as the 7/1 Vegas favorite to take the trophy in The Barclays.

British Open and PGA Championship winner Padraig Harrington is next at 10/1 odds, with Sergio Garcia at 12/1, and each of Retief Goosen, Jim Furyk, and Ernie Els at 15/1. Anthony Kim, Adam Scott, and Vijay Singh are then all tied at 20/1 odds to win The Barclays, followed by Kenny Perry at 25/1, and each of Mike Weir, K.J. Choi, Geoff Ogilvy, Stewart Cink, and Stuart Appleby at 30/1.

The top 120 golfers in the FedExCup standings after this weekend will advance to next week's event, the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts. The PGA Tour playoffs then continue with 70 golfers at the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club from September 4-7, and finally 30 golfers at The TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club from September 25-28.

    Non-event of the day . . .

Kyle Orton vs. Rex Grossman? J.T. O'Sullivan vs. Alex Smith vs. Shaun Hill? As far as quarterback battles go, those ones aren't exactly riveting. However, we'll get to see all of those pivots on Thursday night (starting at 9:00pm ET) when the Bears host the Niners in the first game of Week 3 of the NFL's preseason schedule. The oddsmakers have the Bears pegged as 3-point home favorites, with the total at 37.5 points.

    Also on the schedule . . .

Some of the American League's best pitchers will take to the mound on Thursday. Cliff Lee (17-2, 2.43 ERA) will try to guide the Indians past the Royals. Roy Halladay (14-9, 2.64 ERA) will take the mound for the Blue Jays against the Yankees. John Lackey (10-2, 3.22 ERA) will try to pitch the Angels to a win over the Twins. In the other Junior Circuit game on Thursday it'll be Oakland at Seattle.

It's busier in the National League on Thursday, with six games on the schedule. The Dodgers will host the Rockies, with Florida at San Francisco, Washington at Philadelphia, Atlanta at the Mets, and San Diego at Arizona. As well, Carlos Zambrano (12-5, 3.38 ERA) and the Cubs will be looking to pick up a victory at Wrigley Field against the Reds.

Finally, there is one Canadian Football League game on the schedule for Thursday night, with Saskatchewan at Edmonton. The Eskimos were opened as 2.5-point home favorites in that contest, with the game's total sitting at 56 points.

    News from the wire . . .

The Bears stated earlier in the week that Orton would enter the season as the team's starting quarterback, so that will take a little bit of pressure off him on Thursday night . . . O'Sullivan will start for the Niners on Thursday night, and he's the leading candidate to be their top quarterback when the regular season gets underway . . . the Cardinals and Anquan Boldin continue to battle over the wide receiver's trade demands.

    Peek at the future . . .

There are four more NFL games on tap for Friday night: Philadelphia at New England, Tennessee at Atlanta, Houston at Dallas, and Green Bay at Denver . . . the Yankees open a series in Baltimore on Friday night, with former Orioles ace Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.35 ERA) expected to take the mound for New York . . . the semifinals of the Olympics men's hoops tournament will be played at 8am and 10:15am ET on Friday morning.

Thursday's List of 13: Looking at 2007 NFL first drive stats

It can be fun and educational to look at how NFL teams do on first drive of each half. Here are some tidbits we learned from looking at how each NFL did in 2007, on the 64 drives (32 offense, 32 defense) that made up the first drive of every half they played……

        13) When you go 16-0 in regular season, you dominate every phase of the game; Patriots outscored foes 71-10 on game’s opening drive, 49-31 on first drive of third quarter; their +79 scoring margin on opening drives s led NFL, with San Diego Chargers next (+66).

        12) On opening drive of second half, Jets gained average of just 17.4 yards per drive, scoring only six points on 16 drives. You look at Green Bay, where Favre was, and see that they gained average of 34.3 yards/drive, and scored 43 points, so Jets figure to upgrade there.

        11) What were the Carolina Panthers doing at halftime last year? Granted, they had major QB isuues (Vinny Testaverde started six games) but Carolina was outscored 59-3 on first drive of third quarter- they kicked a FG in Week 16 after they had turned ball over four times in previous games. Not good.

        10) Kansas City, on 32 opening drives, gained total of just 586 yards (18.3 ypd) and scored 12 points- they didn’t scored a TD on an opening drive all season!!! They were outscored 40-9 on opening drives of a game.

        9) Patriots led NFL with 71 points on opening drives of a game; Bengals were next with 59, then Giants/Texans at 48.

        8) Least amount of points on game's first drives are the Chiefs (9 points), followed by 49ers (10), then Falcons, Ravens, and Washington, all with 13 points.

        7) Redskins had a 59-yard TD drive to open Week 11, the only opening drive TD they had all year; they kicked FGs in Weeks 9,13 and have five 3/outs. Over their last nine games, though, Redskins scored five TDs, three FGs on their first drive of the third quarter, averaging 53.1 yards per drive.

        6) Norv Turner makes good adjustments for Chargers during halftime; San Diego scored nine TDs, two FGs on first drive of the second half- they punted only three times, fumbling twice.

        5) Mike Martz is San Francisco's fourth offensive coordinator in last four years, as Mike Nolan coaches to save his job with 49ers. In second half of last season, on their opening drive of the game, 49ers ran 26 plays for 66 yards, with an interception and seven punts. Thats in eight games. Martz has his work cut out for him; a three-way QB battle is underway now.

        4) Early last season, Pittsburgh opened second half on fire-- in their first six games, Steelers scored four TDs and FG on their first second half drive. Over their last ten games, Steelers ran a total of 60 plays on opening drives for 236 yards, with just one TD and one FG to show for it. Teams solved their offense.

        3) Maybe if we looked closer at Giants' stats, their Super Bowl run wouldn't have seemed so unlikely ( but, if we saw them vs Minnesota in November, it would have seemed impossible). In nine of their 16 opening drives, the Giants gained 60+ yards, a very impressive stat. When they were aggressive with the ball, their offense was very good.

        2) The defense was probably the most surprising part of their playoff run; in second half of season, Giant defense allowed an average of 51.5 yards per opening drive, giving up five TDs, one FG. Teams were studying them and picking them apart. It is very impressive that they survived that to win a title.

        1) Steelers, outscored 89-68 on opening drives of a half, were best team to be outscored in this category. Was this because of a rookie coach? Over last four regular season tilts, Steelers allowed an average of 71.5 yards per drive on first drive of the third quarter. Interesting to see if they improve on that in '08.

Canadian Football League – ATS Previews

                CFL
                ATS Previews

                CFL ATS Previews Week 9

The OVER/UNDER record on the season is 34-26-0 for 56% and you will have noticed in the Stamps vs. Lions game the bookmakers have made their adjustments to this total, which will discourage the public from betting the OVER in this matchup. However, it’s been an explosive season for the offenses and it might take a few more weeks to get those UNDERS tickets to start cashing.

Here are the CFL previews for Week 9. Enjoy!

                Saskatchewan (55.5) vs. Edmonton (-3)

Roughriders vs. Eskimos History: The Saskatchewan Roughriders are 9-9-3 (ATS), 5-16 (SU) and the O/U is 9-12-0 vs. the Eskimos in Edmonton since 1996.

Comment: The Roughriders and Eskimos are both coming off a bye week; therefore, both teams will be eager to get rolling this Thursday at Commonwealth Stadium. The Eskimos are anticipating a crowd of 48,000 to 50,000, as 43,000 tickets have already been sold to Thursday’s tilt vs. the top draw in the league, the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Lady luck finally ran out on the Roughriders prior to the Bye week, they fell 30-25 to the Calgary Stampeders and they will have another tough time this week in Edmonton, as they are only 5-16 SU at Commonwealth Stadium since 1996. In fact, the Riders are only 3-13 SU on the road vs. division opponents when the total is 54.5 or higher. Plus, Saskatchewan has been hit with a ton of leg injuries this season, but they’ve still managed to average 29.86 Points For a game, while their stingy defense allows only 23.29 points against. QB Ricky Ray is looking like the old Ricky Ray before he left to the NFL and has found new favorite receivers in Kelly Campbell and Fred Stamps. Furthermore, Edmonton is in a great betting spot this week, they are 11-2 SU as a home favorite in August before a division game on deck. The Eskimos who lost a 40-34 nail bitter in BC two weeks ago might get caught looking head to next week, as they have their biggest regular season game of the year on deck, the BIG Labor Day Classic with the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. As for the Roughriders, they face the Blue Bombers next Sunday on August 31st. Great way to kick off Week 9!

ATS Calculator Forecast: The ATS Calculator has Saskatchewan winning by 3.25 points and the O/U to land on 54.49 points.

ATS Database Stat of the Game: When EDMONTON team played as Home team as a Favorite - Allowed score 40 points or more against; The Eskimos are 7-3 SU in this role since ’96.

Calgary (58) vs. BC Lions (-3)

Stampeders vs. Lions History: The Calgary Stampeders are 9-8-1 (ATS), 5-13 SU and the O/U is 8-10-0 vs. the Lions at BC Place since 1996.

Comment: Great Wendy’s Friday night matchup this week on TSN in Canada; the Calgary Stampeders travel to BC Place in Vancouver to face the BC Lions. The Stamps and Lions are both coming off their bye week and it’s a dangerous spot for both teams, as both the Stamps are Lions are coming off big wins prior to the Bye week. Calgary won as a road underdog in Saskatchewan 30-25, while the Lions went to 4-3 on the season beating the Edmonton Eskimos who were enjoying a 2-game winning streak at the time. In fact, prior to their tilt with the Leo’s, Edmonton was unbeaten ATS in their last 5 games. Calgary has a great offense with Henry Burris as their field general, keep in mind Dave Dickenson is returning as a back up in BC since leaving the team in the offseason, so there’s always a chance Dickenson can come into the game and give the Stamps a shot in the arm if needed. The Stamps are averaging 29.14 (PF) a game, while their defense has been the main surprise, giving up only 23.71 points per game. However, the Stamps are in a bad betting spot, they are only 2-10 SU as a Road Underdog vs. a division foe, while the total is 54.5 or higher. Plus, don’t forget the big Labor Day classic on deck for Calgary, as they have the Eskimos in Week 10 in the nationally televised game where the whole country is paying attention to this main event. As for the Lions, they have seen their last 3 games go OVER the posted total in their last 3 matches and that’s why you’ve seen the line makers have made their adjustments with a high total for this contest. During the last 3 season, it seems Wally Buono’s teams seem to kick it up a notch after Week 8, as they are 13-3 SU as a Home Team during the month of August between Week 8 to 12. To dig a bit deeper into this statistic, the BC Lions are 10-1-1 SU the last 3 years during Week 8 to 12, so look for the Leo’s to maybe stick to this trend. The warning shot for the Lions is their next game, as they might be looking ahead subconsciously with the surging Montreal Alouettes on deck who are making some noise now in the Eastern Division.

ATS Calculator Forecast: The ATS Calculator has Calgary winning by 3.89 points and the O/U to land on 56.12 points.

ATS Database Stat of the Game: When ANY CFL team played as Road team as a Underdog -Playing on Friday -Total is 54.5 or more - Coming off a 1 ATS; The UNDER is 12-3-1 for the Road Dog (Calgary) in this situation since 1996.

                Good luck!

I'm not a big fan of investing in summer games, but people have asked for some insight so here goes, as little as it is............

-- 49ers won 34-6 at home last week, now travel east on a short week to face Chicago club that split pair of summer games with San Francisco last two years, with home team winning both tilts. Both teams had QB controversy this summer, but Bears named Kyle Orton starter, while three-man race still underway with SF, as O'Sullivan, who came to Frisco with Martz, battles Hill, Smith for the starting nod. Good handicapper I know likes to play over in these nationally-televised exhibitions.

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays [YES | 7:07 PM ET]

Yankees: After a blazing start with the Yankees, Sidney Ponson has come back to earth a little bit over his last three starts, allowing 20 hits and nine runs in 20 innings of work. Overall, the Yankees are 2-3 in Ponson’s last five starts. Ponson has a weird history with the Blue Jays. He’s just 7-10 with a 4.59 ERA overall. But on the other hand, he has pitched six complete games against Toronto. The UNDER is 4-0 in Ponson’s last four starts.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Blue Jays (-175, O/U 8.5): Not that it’s a surprise to anyone but Roy Halladay has been extremely consistent over his last 10 starts. In that span, the Jays ace has allowed three runs or less seven times. Halladay was masterful his last time out against the Red Sox, holding the powerful Boston lineup to one run in pitching a complete game. There aren’t many pitchers that can say they own the Yankees but Halladay is one of them. He’s 12-5 with a remarkable 2.88 ERA against the Bombers in his career. The UNDER is 7-3 in Halladay’s last 10 starts.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Braves: While he hasn’t pitched great overall, the Braves are a profitable 3-2 with Mike Hampton on the mound this season. Hampton had one of his best outings of the year in his last start versus the Giants, giving up just two runs over six innings. Hampton is an even 10-10 against the Mets in his career, although his ERA is an impressive 3.15. The OVER is a wise investment with Hampton on the mound. Four of his five starts this season have easily gone OVER the total.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mets (-210, O/U 9.5): Pedro Martinez is only 2-1 in his last six starts but he’s performed well in those outings. Martinez has only allowed 12 runs in his last 33.2 innings pitched but the Mets haven’t given him much run support, going 3-3 overall during that stretch. Pedro has faced the Braves 21 times in his career, going 11-9 with a solid 3.54 ERA. Surprisingly, the OVER is 4-2 in Martinez’s last six starts.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET]

Padres: Chad Reineke gets the call tonight after winning his first Major League start against the Phillies. Reineke wasn’t great in that game, allowing three runs over five innings, but he was helped out by the Padres offense scoring eight runs. Reineke struck out five in his first start, although he did walk three batters as well. Reineke will be making his first-ever road start tonight.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Diamondbacks (-320, O/U 8): Brandon Webb’s quest for another CY Young Award continues tonight. Webb has been close to unhittable during his five-game winning streak, allowing just eight runs over 38 innings of work. As a matter of fact, Webb has only given up a single run in four of his last six starts. But if there’s one team Webb doesn’t like seeing, it’s the Padres. He’s just 5-7 in 20 career starts against San Diego. The UNDER is 3-1 in Webb’s last four starts.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                              Thursday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                              Streaking

Cliff Lee, Cleveland Indians (17-2, 2.43)

Lee is 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts and has relinquished more than two earned runs just once in seven straight starts.

Lee is fresh off a home victory over the Los Angeles Angels in which he surrendered two earned runs and struck out six in nine innings.

The Tribe is 18-6 in Lee's last 24 and is 8-2 in his last 10 against the Kansas City Royals.

Brandon Webb, Arizona Diamondbacks (18-4, 2.85)

The D'backs, despite a 64-60 record, are tied atop the NL West and Webb is the indisputable reason for their success. Webb is 3-0 with a solid 1.57 ERA in his last three starts and is unbeaten in his last 10 overall.

In his last five starts, Webb has relinquished just eight earned runs in 38 IP. He is 2-1 and has a 2.95 ERA in his last three starts against the San Diego Padres.

The Diamondbacks are 19-7 in Webb's last 26 home starts and are 7-3 in his last 10 at home against the Padres.

                              Slumping

Aaron Harang, Cincinnati Reds (3-13, 5.59)

Harang has just one victory in his last 10 and is 0-2 in his last three with 16.97 ERA. He has relinquished 22 earned runs on 22 hits in his last 11.2 IP.

Harang is 0-4 in his last five road starts and is 1-7 overall on the road. He has also surrendered 21 earned runs and seven HRs in his last four road starts.

The Reds are 1-4 in Harang's last five against a club with a winning record and are 0-4 in his last four against the Chicago Cubs.
