    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, August 9

Carlos Zambrano will be looking to pitch the Cubs to a win on Saturday afternoon when he takes to the hill against the division-rival Cards. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup …

    Event of the day . . .

The Cubs have been pulling away from the Brewers and Cardinals in the NL Central division race, and they'll get a chance to drop St. Louis farther behind them in the standings with their ace on the mound at home on Saturday afternoon.

Zambrano (12-4, 2.76 ERA) has turned in three strong outings in a row, holding the Marlins, Brewers, and Pirates to a combined three earned runs on 14 hits over 20 innings of work. The Cubs are 7-3 in the righthander's past 10 starts, and the last time he faced the Cards (July 4) he tossed six shutout innings in a 2-1 Chicago win.

Todd Wellemeyer (8-4, 4.01 ERA) has also been solid in each of his past three outings, allowing just five earned runs over 17 innings versus the Brewers, Braves, and Phillies. However, the Cardinals still went 1-2 in those three games. The righthander faced the Cubs back on July 6, surrendering three earned runs over five innings in a loss.

    Non-event of the day . . .

The Buccaneers had the worst record of any division winner in the NFL last season, the Dolphins had the worst record in all of football, and neither team managed to snag Brett Favre from the Packers. Tampa Bay and Miami will meet in preseason action at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday night, with the home team favored by 1.5 points.

    Also on the schedule . . .

The Brewers will have Ben Sheets (10-5, 3.14 ERA) on the mound on Saturday when they host Washington and starter Tim Redding (8-6, 4.44 ERA). Other NL games on tap: Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, Houston at Cincinnati, Florida at the Mets, San Diego at Colorado, Atlanta at Arizona, and the Dodgers at San Francisco.

The top game in the AL on Saturday is in Chicago, with Jose Contreras (7-6, 4.60 ERA) leading his White Sox against the Red Sox and Daisuke Matsuzaka (12-2, 3.04 ERA). Also on the schedule: Cleveland at Toronto, the Yankees at the Angels, Texas at Baltimore, Oakland at Detroit, Minnesota at Kansas City, and Tampa Bay at Seattle.

The Redskins are 3.5-point favorites to beat the Bills in NFL preseason action at FedExField on Saturday night. The other NFL games for Saturday: Indianapolis at Carolina (-4), Atlanta at Jacksonville (-3.5), St. Louis at Tennessee (-3), Denver at Houston (-3), and Dallas at San Diego (-3).

    News from the wire . . .

The Orioles traded relief pitcher Chad Bradford to the Rays . . . the Rangers placed outfielder David Murphy on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained knee . . . The Jets released quarterback Chad Pennington hours after they traded for quarterback Brett Favre . . . Kenny Perry withdrew from the PGA Championship after the opening round because of an eye infection.

    Peek at the future . . .

It's Chris Carpenter (0-0, 1.00 ERA) vs. Ryan Dempster (12-5, 2.93 ERA) in the Cards/Cubs matchup on Sunday night . . . the PGA Championship wraps up on Sunday afternoon . . . The USA basketball team is a 33-point favorite to beat China on Sunday . . . NASCAR's Centurion Boats at The Glen begins at 1:00pm ET on Sunday . . . The Bengals and Packers will meet at Lambeau Field on Monday night.

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Cardinals: Todd Wellemeyer has pitched much better on the road, where he is unbeaten in 10 starts at 2-0 with a solid 3.28 ERA. Unfortunately for Wellemeyer, five of his last seven starts have come at home, with the Cardinals losing five of them. In fact, St. Louis has lost seven of the last nine times he has gone to the mound, including a 7-1 setback to Chicago on July 6. In that game, Wellemeyer gave up three runs and nine hits in five innings of work.

Cardinals are 2-7 in Wellemeyer's last 9 starts overall.
The OVER is 8-1-1 in St. Louis' last 10 road games.

Key Injuries - OF Chris Duncan (.248; neck) is on the 15-day DL.

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-200): Carlos Zambrano has yet to lose a game at Wrigley Field this season, going 6-0 in 12 starts there with a stellar 2.25 ERA. Zambrano has also fared well against the Cardinals during his career with a 9-4 mark and 2.26 ERA. The Cubs have won three straight overall with Big Z even though he did not get a decision against Pittsburgh last Sunday after allowing one earned run in five innings with one walk and two strikeouts.

Cubs are 10-1 in Zambrano's last 11 starts vs. St. Louis.
The UNDER is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Yankees: Dan Giese will be making just his third start of the season and hopes to help fill the void in the starting rotation left by Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees lost his previous two starts by a combined score of 21-6 even though he was only responsible for six earned runs in 10.2 innings of work during that stretch. It's also worth noting that both were interleague games.

The OVER is 11-3 in New York's last 14 games overall.
The OVER is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Ivan Rodriguez (.291; knee) is day-to-day.

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Angels (-165, O/U 9): John Lackey will try to stay unbeaten for the sixth straight start when he faces the Yankees for the second time in a week. Lackey did see his personal three-game winning streak come to an end last time out at New York on Saturday when he walked away with a no-decision after giving up four runs and seven hits in six inning of an eventual 14-9 loss. That marked just the second loss for the Angels in Lackey's last 12 starts.

Angels are 9-2 in their last 11 home games.
Angels are 17-5 in their last 22 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Maicer Izturis (.263; thumb) is day-to-day.

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox [WGN/NESN | 7:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-135, O/U 9): Daisuke Matsuzaka has only made one road start in his last five trips to the mound, and that resulted in a 4-2 win at Seattle on July 22. Matsuzaka is 5-0 in eight starts away from home overall this season with an impressive 2.20 ERA. He is coming off a win over the A's last Sunday, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. That marked Dice K's highest strikeout total since an April 2 visit to Oakland, when he fanned nine batters.

Red Sox are 7-2 in Matsuzaka's last 9 starts overall.
The OVER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

Key Injuries - 1B Kevin Youkilis (.317; hand) has returned.

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox: Jose Contreras will make his first start since July 13 after a stint on the DL with right elbow tendinitis. Contreras had seen his ERA balloon from 2.76 to 4.60 in his previous seven starts, so the White Sox are definitely hoping he returns to form here so he can help them down the stretch. He has pitched well at home in nine starts, going 4-3 with a 3.34 ERA. However, the Red Sox have been his nemesis during his career. Contreras is just 3-5 lifetime vs. Boston in nine starts with a 9.12 ERA.

White Sox are 1-7 in the last 8 meetings.
The OVER is 16-5-1 in Chicago's last 22 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              SCOREBOARD

              Saturday, Aug. 9

Boston at Chicago White Sox (7:05 p.m. EDT). Daisuke Matsuzaka (12-2, 3.04 ERA) and the Red Sox try to keep pace in the AL East against one of the best teams in the Central. Jose Contreras (7-6, 4.60) takes the mound for the White Sox.

              STARS

              Friday

              - Kevin Millar, Orioles, hit two homers for his third multihomer game of the year and Baltimore routed Texas 9-1.

              - CC Sabathia, Brewers, pitched a five-hitter for his fourth shutout of the season, striking out nine in Milwaukee's 5-0 win over Washington.

              - Oliver Perez, Mets, gave up two hits and struck out eight in seven innings to help New York shut out Florida 3-0.

              - Carlos Lee, Astros, went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Houston beat Cincinnati 9-5 in 10 innings.

              - Torii Hunter, Angels, went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs to help Los Angeles beat New York 10-5.

              WELCOME BACK, CHIPPER

Chipper Jones returned from the disabled list with a pair of hits, including a home run estimated at 434 feet, powering the Atlanta Braves to an 11-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jones was activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game. He had missed the previous 14 games with a strained left hamstring. Jones has missed a total of 26 games this season, during which the Braves are 9-17. Jones came into the game leading the majors with a .369 batting average and .466 on-base percentage.

              REYES OF HOPE

Anthony Reyes won his Cleveland debut, helping the Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2. Acquired from St. Louis in a July 26 trade that sent right-hander Luis Perdomo to the Cardinals, the right-hander allowed one run and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. Reyes won Game 1 of the 2006 World Series for St. Louis but struggled the following season, finishing 2-14 with a 6.04 ERA. He moved to the bullpen this season, going 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA and one save in 10 relief appearances before being traded last month. Reyes didn't mind that he wasn't dealt to a pennant contender as the trade deadline approached. "I was excited just to start somewhere fresh,'' he said. "I think with St. Louis, that was probably it for me. I was excited for the opportunity and just excited to be coming here, having a chance to come up here and compete.''

              DOWN WITH OP

Oliver Perez pitched two-hit ball for seven innings, and the New York Mets took the first game of a key series against their division rival Florida Marlins 3-0. Perez improved to 3-0 against the Mets' low-budget rival this season, and the Mets improved to 6-2 in his starts since beating the Yankees on June 29.

              WALK SLOW-EY

Minnesota's Kevin Slowey didn't walk a batter in six innings in the Twins' 4-1 win over the Royals. It was the 16th time in 29 career starts Slowey didn't walk a batter. He is averaging 1.3 walks per nine innings this season. "I don't think I have the stuff to get away with walking a lot of guys,'' Slowey said. "That's the way it's been my whole life.''

              OUCH!

Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer broke a bone in his left foot when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Garrett Jones during a rehab assignment at Triple-A Rochester and plans to return to Minneapolis on Sunday and will be examined by team doctors. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Cuddyer's foot will be placed in a boot. "We'll know more of a time scale when he sees our doctors, but it's not a good situation,'' Gardenhire said.

              AILING

Phillies reliever Tom Gordon will see Dr. Lewis Yocum on Monday for a second opinion on his injured right elbow, and could be facing Tommy John surgery. Gordon is trying to recover from elbow inflammation that placed him on the disabled list July 6. He pulled himself from a rehabilitation assignment at Class-A Clearwater on Wednesday, when he experienced discomfort after pitching to just two batters. Gordon is 5-4 with a 5.16 ERA in 34 games for the Phillies this season. The team hoped he would be able to contribute out of the bullpen down the stretch, serving as manager Charlie Manuel's primary set-up man when healthy.

              BOSTON, PUBLIC

A possible trade to send Brian Giles from San Diego to Boston fell through, and the Padres outfielder said he was upset that details of the talks became public. "I didn't know everybody was supposed to know, especially when it wasn't a done deal and it wouldn't go down,'' Giles said before the Padres opened a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. Giles was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on Wednesday, and the teams had 48 hours to complete a deal. Giles had to consent to be traded, and the Red Sox were one of eight teams on his no-trade list. He wouldn't say who killed the deal - several reports said he refused to give his consent.

              CATCHING MORE Z'S

Relief pitcher Brad Ziegler tied the Athletics' mark for consecutive scoreless innings, pitching the eighth and ninth innings of Oakland's 4-2 win over Detroit for his first career save. He extended his scoreless streak to 37 consecutive innings to tie Mike Torrez's club record, set in 1976. Manager Bob Geren said that he won't hesitate to use Ziegler as a closer, considering regular closer Huston Street's recent struggles.

              SPEAKING

"I'm like his mini-me. When he's out there, I just get excited. Since he's come over here, he's been awesome. You get a pitcher like that, you want to give him everything you've got, so you can make sure he gets the win. He's doing his part.'' - 270-pound first baseman Prince Fielder after 290-pound pitcher CC Sabathia pitched a five-hitter in Milwaukee's 5-0 win over Washington.

              SEASONS

              Aug. 9

1916 - The Philadelphia A's ended their 20-game losing streak as Joe Bush beat the Detroit Tigers 7-1.

1960 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox hit home run No. 511 to tie Mel Ott for fourth place on the career list.

1975 - Davey Lopes of the Los Angeles Dodgers stole his 32nd consecutive base without being caught in a 2-0 victory over the New York Mets, breaking Max Carey's 1922 record. Lopes tacked on six more steals before being caught on Aug. 24.

1976 - John Candelaria became the first Pirate pitcher in 69 years to throw a no-hitter in Pittsburgh by blanking the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0. Candelaria's no-hitter came at Three Rivers Stadium. No Pirate ever threw a no-hitter at Forbes Field.

1981 - Baseball returned following the strike with the All-Star game in Cleveland before a crowd of 72,086. Gary Carter of the Montreal Expos hit two home runs to give the NL a 5-4 triumph over the AL. Vida Blue became the first pitcher to win an All-Star game in both leagues. His AL victory came in 1971 at Detroit.

1988 - The Chicago Cubs won the first official night game at Wrigley Field by beating the New York Mets 6-4.

1998 - Dennis Martinez became the winningest Latin pitcher in baseball history, breaking Juan Marichal's record of 243 victories. Martinez pitched a perfect eighth inning and got the victory when Chipper Jones hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the ninth inning and the Atlanta Braves held on for the win.

2001 - Mike Hampton tied the NL record for pitchers with his seventh homer as the Rockies beat the Cubs 14-5. Hampton's seventh homer matched the NL mark shared by Don Drysdale (1958, 1965) and Don Newcombe (1955). The major league record is nine by Cleveland's Wes Ferrell in 1931.

2002 - Barry Bonds hit his 600th homer, becoming the fourth major leaguer to reach the mark. With a 421-foot, solo shot off Pittsburgh's Kip Wells, the San Francisco Giants slugger joined Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays in the exclusive club.

2006 - Mark DeRosa hit three-run homers in consecutive innings to lead Texas to a 14-0 rout of Oakland.

2007 - Failed pitcher Rick Ankiel hit a three-run home run to cap his debut as a major league outfielder in St. Louis' 5-0 victory over San Diego.

Today's birthdays: Jason Frasor 31; Mike Lamb 33; Brian Fuentes 33; Matt Morris 34; Troy Percival 39.

Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota at Kansas City (+120, 8)

The Twins' pitching was scary enough before Francisco Lirano came off the DL. Now they have another live, young arm in the arsenal and if you don't believe Liriano's ready to dominate the majors again, you're kidding yourself. Sure, he's got the stigma of Tommy John surgery to get past but a 10-2 record and 3.28 ERA in the minors should indicate that his elbow is just fine. He also pitched six shutout innings in his major league return last week which should prove his readiness at the major league level.

As for the rest of the team, they're hitting around .280 on the season and they're 7-2 against Kansas City this season. Bets don't get any easier than this.

                      Pick: Twins

Boston at Chicago White Sox (-135, 9)

This is the best price you're ever likely to get on a Dice-K start. Normally, you'll see the Sox at around -180 when Dice-K is the starter, largely because he's 12-2 as a starter and has a 3.04 ERA.

Chicago just activated Jose Contreras after the right-hander spent a month on the DL with tendinitis in his elbow. Contreras was shaky before the injury and it's a good bet that he'll be having trouble with his location today.

                      Pick: Red Sox

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Cubs (-200, O/U 9): Carlos Zambrano has yet to lose a game at Wrigley Field this season, going 6-0 in 12 starts there with a stellar 2.25 ERA.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 6

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3
