      Saturday, August 9

I'm not a big fan of investing in summer games, especially in the first week of preseason. But people have asked for some insight so here goes, as little as it is............

-- Redskins won their first preseason game Sunday; Hawai'i QB Brennan looked good in relief of Campbell. Bills lost seven of last ten summer games, but they have solid backup QB (Losman).

-- Colts are awful summer team (2-12 in last 14); they have battle for #3 QB job in Gray/Lorenzen. Delhomme makes his return from Tommy John surgery; he is backed up by less-than-stellar trio.

-- Falcon coach Smith came to Atlanta from Jacksonville; Jaguars are 6-2 the last two summers, while Falcons are starting over- QB Redman gets start, with rookie Ryan in reserve. Lemon-Bouman are experienced backup QBs for Jacksonville.

-- Dolphins beat Tampa two of last three seasons, with all three decided by three points; Miami QB situation now in flux, as they signed Pennington Friday. Buc have ton of QBs, with Greise the best of Garcia's backups.

-- Not too many players left from Super Bowl nine years ago, but Jeff Fisher is there-- he lost Super Bowl by a yard, and probably tries to beat Rams here more than he should. Would guess Ingel Martin gets more time than Kerry Collins under center for Titans.

-- 28-year old Kyle Shanahan makes his play-calling debut for the Texans against Denver, coached by his father. Rosenfels might be best backup QB in NFL. Broncos have Patrick Ramsey as their backup QB. Houston is 5-3 the last two summers.

-- Chargers are 6-3 in last nine summer games; Dallas is 8-2-1 in its last eleven, but some of that was done under Parcells, who is fond of trying to win any game. Expect to see Volek/Whitehurst under center for San Diego, in relief of Rivers.

        Six-pack for Saturday

-- Saints have had better record on road than at home seven of last eight seasons, a very unusual statistic.

-- 80,160 fans paid to watch baseball in Chicago Friday, as Cubs/White Sox were both home. Both home sides won.

-- Phillies haven't scored a run in their last 23 innings.

-- Oakland rookie Ziegler got his first save Friday, has now started his career with 37 consecutive scoreless IP, by far the most in major league history.

-- Odd timing: Aaron Rodgers fired his agent Friday. Why?

-- Dolphins-Jets in Week 1 is now Pennington-Favre QB duel as AFC East rivalries get more personal by the day.
