    SCOREBOARD

    Sunday, Aug. 3

Cleveland at Minnesota (2:10 p.m. EDT). Nelson Liriano (0-3, 11.32 ERA) makes his first major league start since being sent to the minors on April 25. The left-hander was 10-0 with a 2.67 ERA in his last 11 starts for Triple-A Rochester. He will be opposed by the Indians' Matt Ginter (1-2, 4.20).

    STARS

    Saturday

    - Manny Ramirez, Dodgers, hit his first homer since getting traded by Boston, finishing 2-for-4 in a 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

    - Jose Molina, Yankees, went 3-for-3 with a homer, scoring three times in an 8-2 victory over the NL West-leading Angels.

    - CC Sabathia, Brewers, gave up six hits and two runs in 8 1-3 innings, striking out nine in a 4-2 win over the Braves.

    - Prince Fielder, Brewers, hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs in a 4-2 win over the Braves.

    - Esteban German, Royals, finished a home run short of the cycle, driving in three runs in a 9-7 win over the White Sox.

    - Evan Longoria, Rays, went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, driving in three in a 9-3 victory over the Tigers.

    - Kevin Youkilis, Red Sox, hit a pair of two-run homers in a 12-2 rout of the Athletics.

    - Joe Blanton, Phillies, gave up four hits and a run in seven innings, winning his first game since getting traded to Philadelphia in a 2-1 win over the Cardinals.

    - Barry Zito, Giants, finally looked like a former Cy Young winner, scattering three hits and four walks over eight innings in a 2-0 win over the Padres.

    - Jeremy Guthrie, Orioles, allowed four hits and a run in a complete-game, 3-1 victory over the Mariners.

    PARDON ME

The Astros' 5-4, 10-inning victory over the Mets featured a memorable play in the ninth inning. New York was leading 4-2 when Houston loaded the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter Geoff Blum then lined a single to left and Hunter Pence raced around third, right on Mark Loretta's heels. In an image reminiscent of a scene in the movie "Major League,'' both players slid in safely in a three-player collision with catcher Ramon Castro, who lost the ball.

    EVAN ALMIGHTY

Evan Longoria tied a club record for home runs by a rookie, hitting No. 21 and driving in three runs in Tampa Bay's 9-3 rout of Detroit. Longoria, who's hitting .280 with 67 RBIs after beginning the season in the minors, also homered in the Rays' 5-2 win over Detroit the previous night. He has five home runs and 14 RBIs in his last 14 games.

    WALK OF FAME

Manny Ramirez hit his first home run since moving to Hollywood, a two-run shot that helped the Dodgers to a 4-2 win over Arizona. It was the 511th homer of his career, tying Mel Ott for 22nd place all-time and putting Ramirez one behind Eddie Mathews and Ernie Banks.

    JUST LIKE CY YOUNG

Barry Zito gave up three hits in a season-high eight innings to outpitch Jake Peavy and lead the Giants to a 2-0 win over San Diego. Zito (6-13) won the matchup of former Cy Young Award winners and avoided setting a career high for losses in a season. Each pitcher allowed just two hits through the first six innings.

    LET HIM FINISH!

Ricky Nolasco pitched eight strong innings, striking out a career-high 13, when Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez pulled him from their game against Colorado. Sure, Kevin Gregg finished up for his 24th save, but he denied Nolasco his first complete game and extended this dubious distinction: Florida has gone 287 games since their last complete game on Sept. 16, 2006.

    ONE FOR THE ROAD

CC Sabathia pitched 8 1-3 standout innings to help the Brewers equal a club record with their ninth straight road win, 4-2 over the Braves. Milwaukee stayed four games back of NL Central-leading Chicago, and has won two straight after being swept in four games by the Cubs.

    SPEAKING

"It's the same game. Regardless of what jersey I'm wearing, it's the same game I've played my entire life.'' - Jason Bay, whose three-run homer helped spur the Red Sox to a 12-2 rout of the Athletics.

    SEASONS

    Aug. 3

1933 - Lefty Grove of the Philadelphia A's became the first pitcher since Aug. 2, 1931 - a span of 308 games - to shut out the New York Yankees, winning 7-0.

1948 - Cleveland's Satchel Paige made his first major league start and went seven innings to lead the Indians to a 5-3 victory over the Washington Senators.

1961 - The Pittsburgh Pirates scored a 19-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals for the largest shutout score in an NL night game.

1969 - Pinch-hitter Rich Reese hit a grand slam to power the Minnesota Twins to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Baltimore Orioles and end Dave McNally's 15-game winning streak. His two victories at the end of 1968 had given him 17 straight wins.

1977 - Eddie Murray, rookie first baseman for Baltimore, hit a home run from each side of the plate and the Orioles beat the Oakland Athletics, 8-6, in 10 innings.

1989 - The Cincinnati Reds scored 14 runs in the first inning on a major league record 16 hits and went on to beat the Houston Astros 18-2. Seven Reds had two hits off starter Jim Clancy and reliever Bob Forsch in the first, breaking a century-old record.
1998 - Mike Oquist allowed 14 earned runs - the most by a major leaguer since 1977 - in five innings of Oakland's 14-1 loss to the New York Yankees.

2001 - Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox pitched a one-hitter and faced only 28 batters in a 4-0 win over Tampa Bay.

2006 - Chase Utley singled in the first inning of Philadelphia's 8-1 win at St. Louis to extend his hitting streak to 35 games.

2006 - Matt Murton tied a major league record with four doubles and drove in five runs to help the Chicago Cubs salvage a split of a doubleheader with Arizona 7-3.

2007 - Detroit Tigers' infielder Neifi Perez was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a third time for a banned stimulant, a penalty that finished his season. Perez was suspended for 25 games on July 6 when he tested positive for a second time.

Today's birthday: Mark Reynolds 25; Troy Glaus 32.

Sunday Night Baseball: Phillies at Cardinals
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The winner of tonight’s Phillies versus Cardinals game will claim a 2-1 edge in this three game series as the two teams have split the two previous games.

The Cards won the opener 6-3 with the help of 10 hits offensively while the pitching staff limited the Phillies to just five hits. In Game 2 on Saturday the Cardinals got another solid pitching performance from their staff but the Phillies managed two solo homeruns to win 2-1. Philadelphia’s Joe Blanton pitched seven strong innings allowing just four hits and striking out five.

Tonight is the rubber match game as these two NL playoff contenders fight to stay in the post season hunt. Philadelphia leads the NL East with an overall record of 60-50 which has them 1.5 games ahead of Florida and two games in front of the Mets for the division lead. Philadelphia has been impressive all season long and statistically rank amongst the best in the National League.

In the NL, offensively the Phillies are eighth in team batting average at .259, 2nd in runs scored (546), sixth in on-base-percentage at .334 and 1st in slugging at .445. This lineup doesn’t have an easy out and is more than capable of scoring double digits on any given night. The pitching staff for the Phillies isn’t bad either as they rank fourth in team ERA, seveth in batting average against, third in saves and seventh in team WHIP in the National League.

St. Louis though has some impressive numbers of their own and won’t be intimidated by Philadelphia. The Cardinals are 62-51 overall and 5-games back of then division leading Cubs. Statistically they have just as good of numbers in the National League as Philadelphia. The Cards are second in NL in team batting average at .276, 3rd in runs with 537, 2nd in on base percentage and 5th in slugging at .427. The pitching staff for the Cardinals is average at best but has gotten the job done all season long. The Cards are 8th in team ERA, 15th in batting average against, 4th in saves and 9th in WHIP.

Taking the mound for the Phillies tonight is right-handed Brett Myers who is 4-9 overall on the season with a 5.46 ERA. Myers has really struggled on the road with a 6.98 ERA, 1-6 record with teams hitting .322 against him. Myers faced St. Louis earlier this year and pitched six innings, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and two homers.

On the bump for St. Louis tonight will be right handed Todd Wellemeyer who is 8-4 on the season with an ERA of 4.13. At home Wellemeyer is 6-4 with a 4.96 ERA. Earlier this year Wellemeyer faced the Phillies and was lit up for 8 earned runs on 8 hits in just three innings of work.

This NL showdown should be a good one and a game I’ll certainly be watching on Sunday night. Tune in yourself and catch a great game on ESPN.
