    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, August 3

The National Football League gets back on the sporting schedule on Sunday night, as the Indianapolis Colts meet the Washington Redskins in the annual Hall of Fame Game.

However, Indy will be missing a future Hall of Famer in the game at Fawcett Stadium, as starting QB Peyton Manning won't be in uniform. Also skipping the game for the Colts will be WR Marvin Harrison, who isn't quite ready to test out his knees. New 'Skins head coach Jim Zorn and his West Coast offense will make their debuts in this contest.

The oddsmakers like Washington's chances of starting the preseason with a win, as they've been pegged as 6-point favorites for Sunday. The game's total is at 31.5 points.

On the diamond the Cubs and Brewers will both send stud pitchers to the mound on Sunday. Carlos Zambrano (12-4, 2.80 ERA) will get the ball for Chicago in their home game against Ian Snell (4-8, 6.04 ERA) and Pittsburgh. Ben Sheets (10-4, 3.14 ERA) will be the starter for the Brewers against Atlanta and Jorge Campillo (5-4, 2.76 ERA).

Other NL games on Sunday: Colorado at Florida, Cincinnati at Washington, the Mets at Houston, San Francisco at San Diego, Arizona at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at St. Louis (with Brett Myers (4-9, 5.46 ERA) battling with Todd Wellemeyer (8-4, 4.13 ERA)).

Over in the American League Daisuke Matsuzaka (11-2, 3.04 ERA) will be looking for his 12th win of the year when the Red Sox host Dallas Braden (2-1, 4.39 ERA) and the Athletics. The Yankees will finish out their series against the Angels and ace John Lackey (9-2, 2.93 ERA), while the Rays will once again host the Tigers in Tampa Bay.

Rounding out Sunday's Junior Circuit slate are the White Sox at Kansas City, Baltimore at Seattle, Toronto at Texas, and Cleveland at Minnesota. Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano is now back from the minor leagues, and he'll get the start on Sunday afternoon.

In the Sprint Cup Series, Jimmie Johnson will be looking to make it two wins in a row on Sunday when he takes to the track at Pocono Raceway for this year's Pennsylvania 500.

Johnson took the checkered flag in the troubled Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last weekend, keeping his tires from exploding just long enough to grab the victory. That was Johnson's second win of this Sprint Cup season.

Kurt Busch won the Pennsylvania 500 last year, while Kasey Kahne visited victory lane in the Pocono 500 on this track back in June. Jeff Gordon took the checkered flag in the Pocono 500 last year, and he has four career Cup victories on the Pennsylvania track.

Meanwhile, overseas, Lewis Hamilton is back on top of the drivers championship as the Formula One series hits the track in Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton picked up his second straight victory last time out, beating Nelsinho Piquet across the finish line to take the checkered flag in the German Grand Prix. The win pushed Hamilton four points ahead of Felipe Massa in the current F1 driver standings.
Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2007, holding off Kimi Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld for the victory. Fernando Alonso, Robert Kubica, Ralf Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, and Heikki Kovalainen rounded out the Top 8 finishers in Budapest last year.

      Six-pack for Sunday

-- CC Sabathia continued to dominate NL hitters, as Brewers edged the hapless Braves, 4-2. Tim Hudson is out for year with an injured elbow, more bad news for Atlanta.

-- Billy Wagner blew another save, as Astros beat Mets 5-4 in 10 innings, second straight close win for Houston vs NY.

-- Joe Blanton got his first win for Phillies, giving up one run in seven innings at St Louis.

-- Barry Zito allowed three hits in eight IP, as Giants won 2-0 at Petco. Giants are 7-6 in Zito's last 13 starts.

-- Orioles' Guthrie threw a complete game, striking out only two as spunky O's handed Seattle yet another loss, 3-1.

-- Manny Ramirez hit his first National League homer in first inning for Dodgers, as LA beat the Diamondbacks, 4-2.

Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

        13) I caught the second half of the induction ceremonies from the Pro Football Hall of Fame on TV last night if you've never been out there, and you like the NFL, take a trip out someday. Good stuff. You'll be glad you did.

        12) Football is such an emotional sport, the speeches on Hall of Fame Day are always so heartfelt and fun to listen to. We don't always get to see the faces or hear the voices of football players, so this is a good chance to get to know them better.

        11) Hall of Fame inductees get to choose who introduces them at the ceremony-- this is such a great idea. Walter Payton was the first player, I think, to have his son introduce him, and now more players are doing it. It adds an excellent personal touch.

        10) ESPN's Tom Jackson noted that "Offensive linemen know the game better than any other players on the field."

        9) Quote of Day, from that noted sports fan, the Dalai Lama: "Not getting what we want is sometimes a marvelous stroke of luck."

        8) My friend Joe is from White Plains; for years, he would tell me how great "Artie Monk from White Plains" was. Not sure why it took so long for him to get elected to the Hall of Fame, but Joe, your guy Artie Monk is now a Hall of Famer.

        7) If the baseball playoffs started Sunday morning, here is who would be participating.........
        AL: Tampa Bay-White Sox-LA Angels-Boston
        NL: Phillies-Cubs-Diamondbacks-Brewers

        6) Rays drilled Detroit 9-3 Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 36,048- they have concerts on Saturdays after the games at The Trop. LL Cool J was Saturday's performer after the game. Evan Longoria knocked in three runs during the game.

        3) It is amazing how many people talk on cellphones now; was walking through a store the other day, and I bet 30-40% of the people there were talking on a phone as they walked in store.

        2) Hey, good news for the Packers; Ryan Grant signed a 4-year deal on Saturday night, ending his holdout. The coaches and fans in Green Bay deserve some good news.

        1) It is 3am as I wrap this up, and for some reason, I'm going to turn the computer off, have a Coke and watch the hoop game over in Asia somewhere with the US Olympic team. Am hoping games at the Olympics are played at a more reasonable hour.

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

              MLB

We will update when projected scores are available.

              Sunday, August 3

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees [TBS | 1 PM ET]

Angels (-130, O/U 9.5): John Lackey will try to build off a near no-hitter last time out when he visits Yankee Stadium for the last time during the regular season. Lackey notched a complete-game victory at Fenway Park on Tuesday, coming within two outs of pitching the third straight no-hitter there. He ended up allowing two hits, including a two-run homer by Boston's Kevin Youkilis in a 6-2 victory. Lackey is 5-1 in seven road starts with a stellar 2.36 ERA.

Angels are 14-3 in their last 17 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Lackey's last 10 starts vs. New York.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Yankees: Darrell Rasner has had trouble going deep into the game over the last couple months. He pitched six innings in a 7-6 loss to Baltimore on Wednesday and had not lasted that long in any of his previous seven outings. The Yankees are 3-5 during that stretch with Rasner on the hill, and he is 3-3 in seven home starts with a 3.80 ERA.

Yankees are 12-4 in their last 16 home games.
The OVER is 7-1 in New York's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Jorge Posada (.268; shoulder) is OUT for the season.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 2:05 PM ET]

Pirates: There could not be a much worse spot for Pittsburgh's Ian Snell than this one against the Cubs. Snell is just 1-6 in 11 road starts this season with a bloated 8.12 ERA. He is also 1-5 lifetime vs. Chicago with a 5.26 ERA. The only positive thing he has going for him is that the Pirates have won his last two starts despite him getting hit hard. Snell is coming off a win against the Rockies last Monday after giving up four runs and eight hits in seven innings with one walk and eight strikeouts. He is 1-4 with a 5.43 ERA during his career with six days of rest or more.

Pirates are 2-9 in the last 11 meetings at Chicago.
The OVER is 12-5-1 in the last 18 meetings overall.

Key Injuries - 2B Freddy Sanchez (.243; back) is day-to-day.
1B Adam LaRoche (.265; ribs) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-260): Ace Carlos Zambrano hasn't had the easiest time against the Pirates during his career, going 10-6 with a 3.93 ERA. That includes a no-decision at Wrigley Field back on May 17, as he gave up five runs and seven hits in four innings of an eventual 7-6 loss. Zambrano has been outstanding in his last two starts overall, allowing two runs in 15 innings of work with two walks and 15 strikeouts. He is also 6-0 in 11 starts at Wrigley with a 2.28 ERA.

Cubs are 40-13 in their last 53 home games.
Cubs are 7-2 in their last 9 Sunday games.

Key Injuries - Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Phillies (-110, O/U 8): The most positive thing about Brett Myers since his return from a demotion in the minors is that he has yet to serve up a homer in two starts. Myers had given up 24 homers in his previous 17 starts for the Phillies, which was the main reason for his 5.84 ERA and 3-9 record. He has since lowered his ERA to 5.46 after allowing three earned runs in 12 innings. Still, Myers remains 1-6 in 11 road starts with a 6.98 ERA and could have trouble keeping the ball in the yard at St. Louis.

Phillies are 6-1 in their last 7 games overall.
Phillies are 3-13 in Myers' last 16 road starts.

Key Injuries - 3B Pedro Feliz (.256 back) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cardinals: Todd Wellemeyer will try to forget the last time he met the Phillies at home back on June 13. Wellemeyer surrendered eight runs and eight hits - including three homers - in just three innings of a 20-2 loss to Philadelphia. The Cardinals proceeded to lose his next four starts after that though they have won two of the last three times he has gone to the mound overall. Wellemeyer earned a win at Atlanta last time out on Tuesday, giving up two runs and eight hits in six innings with one walk and five strikeouts. He is 6-4 at home with a 4.96 ERA.

Cardinals are 5-11 in the last 16 meetings at St. Louis.
Cardinals are 2-6 in Wellemeyer's last 8 starts.

Key Injuries - OF Skip Schumaker (.302; hamstring) is day-to-day.
OF Chris Duncan (.248; neck) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                Sunday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                Streaking

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (9-7, 3.66)

The Devil Rays are leading the AL East and Shields is partly responsible for their success. He is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA in his past three starts and is 7-1 with a solid 2.81 ERA at Tropicana Field.

In his last three starts, Shields has pitched 22.2 innings, striking out 16, while relinquishing just 11 earned runs on 15 hits. He also walked two in that span and is 2-0 and has a 2.25 career-ERA against the Detroit Tigers.

                Slumping

Silva has just one win in his last 10 starts and has relinquished 12 earned runs, three HRs and 19 hits in his last three starts in a mere 10.1 IP.

Silva is 0-1 in his past three starts with a 9.53 ERA and has relinquished eight ERs in eight IP in his last two at Safeco Field. The right-hander is also 1-4 and has a 4.50 career- ERA against the Baltimore Orioles.

Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals (8-7, 3.98)

Greinke has relinquished 14 earned runs in just 16.1 IP in his past three starts. He is 1-2 in that span with a 7.71 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and .418 OBP.

Greinke is 3-1 at home with a 2.95 ERA but is coming off a 7-1 setback to the Detroit Tigers in which he surrendered five ERs in six IP. The right-hander has also relinquished seven HRs in his last 10 starts.

The Royals are 1-4 in Greinke’s last five starts the AL Central and are 3-9 in his last 12 against the Chicago White Sox

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Milwaukee at Atlanta (+134, 8)

Aside from the fact that the Brewers have won six out of the eight meetings in this series this season, I'll still take the Braves at home at this price. Atlanta is 32-23 at Turner Field this season and Jorge Campillo has been money against Milwaukee in his young career. In his two meetings with the Brewers, he's performed brilliantly and earned two big wins.

It's hard to bet against Ben Sheets but the Braves are a totally different team at home. They're hitting .281 in Atlanta and despite some recent losses, this is a good price for the home team.

                      Pick: Braves

                      Detroit at Tampa Bay (-155, 8 1/2)

With Todd Jones on the DL and Joel Zumaya also on the shelf, the Detroit Tigers have been in trouble. Even the addition of Kyle Farnsworth to the bullpen hasn't helped the Tigers much as they've lost three straight games and slipped 6 1/2 out of the top spot in the AL Central. The normally solid Detroit pen has a 5.08 ERA over the last three games. Tampa Bay, on the other hand, has one of the best bullpens in baseball and, along with their steady hitting, those relief pitchers have kept the Rays in first place.

                      Pick: Rays

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Cubs (-280): Ace Carlos Zambrano hasn't had the easiest time against the Pirates during his career, going 10-6 with a 3.93 ERA.

Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Phillies (-110, O/U 9): The most positive thing about Brett Myers since his return from a demotion in the minors is that he has yet to serve up a homer in two starts.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)
