Some of the commentators in Boston are over simplifying the situation by saying if Sox make ther playoffs with Bay the trade should be considered a success, and if they don't it is failure.
The inherent implication is that Sox were a 100% guarantee to make the playoffs with Manny-I don't agree with that;the team had just lost 5 of 6 to Yanks and Angels in Fenway, and the Manny situation and uncertainty was part of the reason.
In my judgment there was no reason to think Sox would all of a sudden turn situation around.
All I know is that so far and even though it was against the shitty A's, Sox won 3 in a row with Bay and without Mr. "I am bigger than the game" Ramirez.

I've always felt he was overrated. So many players in all sports are overrated. Especially, the flamboyant players like Shockey and Favre. ESPN is the entertainment business. It's their job to attract viewers.
I am amazed that so many fans think that obtaining a player from another team or getting a free agent is as simply as replacing a worn out part in their cars.
Sure-go out and get Barry bonds-he is a great hitter;he can go to any team after 2/3 of the season is done with zero playing time and can immediately start cranking out home runs;his new teammates and fans will immediately embrace him of course because afterall he is Barry Bonds and because he is so "likeable(or is it LIEable?) and team oriented. And even better, you can get him at the minimum salary-how great is that!
And of course, many of the same fans claimed collusion when every single GM passed on him;maybe just maybe there are a "few" intangibles which can't be evaluated solely by batting statistics.Last edited by savage1; 08-05-2008, 10:29 AM.

Originally posted by frankb03I often chuckle at the threads and posts here at BC. When a star gets traded fans mourn. Far too often the team excels without the star. Twins are a great example. They're sitting in first. After trading Santana no one gave them a chance. Same with Florida after trading Willis and Cabrera.
Some folks can't grab their phones fast enough to call their locals or to log in to their Offshore, as afterall, they now have a mortal lock no matter what they make the pointspead or money line.
I think it fair to say that at least in a "few" instances the team with their "can't win without" player somehow and "amazingly" finds a way to win and/or cover the spread.
My theory on this is that many times when the "key" player is out, it affects the OTHER team more than it does to the team with the missing player.
The other team is either lulled into a false sense of security thinking that 1) they should have an easy time or 2) just as likely, being the over paid and sometimes lazy folks that they are, they figure the other "wounded" team is not putting their best team forward, so why should they (the other team) give it their full effort themselves.Last edited by savage1; 08-05-2008, 11:38 AM.
