San Diego at St. Louis (8:15 p.m. EDT). Kyle Lohse (11-2, 3.39 ERA) looks to extend his unbeaten streak to 13 starts when the Cardinals return from the All-Star break and face the Padres. Lohse, 8-0 with 2.52 ERA in his last 12 outings, will be opposed by Jake Peavy (7-5, 2.47).
STAR
Wednesday
- No games played because of the All-Star break.
Tuesday
- J.D. Drew, Red Sox, was 2-for-4, including a tying two-run homer in the seventh inning, to earn MVP honors in the American League's 4-3 victory in 15 innings against the NL in the All-Star game.
A BIG HIT
The All-Star game's television ratings increased from last year. The first nine innings of Tuesday night's 15-inning marathon on Fox drew a 9.3 fast national rating and 16 share, the network said Wednesday. That's up 11 percent from the 8.4/15 in 2007. Nielsen issued separate ratings for the regulation portion of the game and the extra innings. Innings 10 through 15 earned a 7.5/18.
YANKEE STADIUM
Yankee Stadium's regular-season finale will be a night game. The Yankees' Sept. 21 game against the Baltimore Orioles has been scheduled for 8:05 p.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPN or ESPN2 as part of the Sunday night package. If New York fails to qualify for the postseason, it will be the last game at the Yankees' longtime home.
HURTING
The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without closer Takashi Saito for at least six weeks. Saito was diagnosed with a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow Tuesday by a team doctor. The 38-year-old right-hander will be placed on the 15-day disabled list when the Dodgers return from the All-Star break Friday night in Arizona. Manager Joe Torre said Sunday that Jonathan Broxton would be the team's closer.
SPEAKING
"Anyone who needed proof that Yankee Stadium is the grandest stage in baseball got it last night. The 2008 All-Star game was one of the greatest experiences in my life and in franchise history.'' - Yankees owner George Steinbrenner on the American League's 4-3, 15-inning victory that lasted 4 hours, 50 minutes.
From Wednesday’s “Baseball Today”:
MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE
One day after winning the Home Run Derby, Minnesota's Justin Morneau scored the winning run in the All-Star Game on Tuesday night as he scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Texas' Michael Young to lift the American League to a 4-3 victory in 15 innings. The AL is 11-0-1 in the last 12 midsummer classics.
FORGETTABLE RECORD
Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla set an All-Star record no player wants to have, becoming the first player to make three errors in the game's history - booting two in the 10th and one in the 13th as the American League beat the National League 4-3 in 15 innings Tuesday night. Nomar Garciaparra was the last player to make two errors - in the 2000 All-Star Game. Former Yankees second baseman Willie Randolph was the last player before Garciaparra to boot two, in 1980.
SPEED DEMONS
The AL ran wild on the base paths in Tuesday night's 4-3 victory in 15 innings, stealing a record six bases in the All-Star game at Yankee Stadium. The previous mark belonged to the AL, which swiped five in a 13-8 victory in 1998, at Coors Field. Texas' Milton Bradely, Ian Kinsler and Joey Hamilton, the Yankees' Derek Jeter, Cleveland's Grady Sizemore and Boston's J.D. Drew each had one swipe. Houston's Miguel Tejada stole second for the NL in the eighth inning - giving the teams a combined seven steals to set an All-Star game record, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
OUT SICK
Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum didn't make it to his first All-Star game Tuesday night after he was hospitalized earlier in the day with flulike symptoms and dehydration. He was released in the afternoon but was not well enough to make the game.
DEBUT HR
Boston's J.D. Drew homered in his first career All-Star game at-bat, lining a tying two-run shot into the right-field seats in the seventh inning of the American League's 4-3 victory in 15 innings. Drew, who was selected the game's MVP, became the 15th player to homer in his first All-Star at-bat.
SPEAKING
"It was just crazy how it seemed like it lasted forever. It was the last year for Yankee Stadium, the last All-Star game, and it's kind of fitting that it seemed like it lasted forever.'' - Texas' Ian Kinsler, after the American League's 4-3, 15-inning victory that lasted 4 hours, 50 minutes.
