    Daily Sports Roundup

    July 9

Neither the Arizona Diamondbacks nor the Los Angeles Dodgers have winning records on the season, but one of those two clubs is likely going to end up winning the NL West.

Early in the year, the D-Backs built up a big lead in the division standings, while the Dodgers sunk way down with the likes of the Giants, Rockies, and Padres. Well, Los Angeles has started to play much better baseball in July, and Arizona has been struggling so badly that they've allowed their rival to erase that early standings deficit.

Both the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers will be in action on Wednesday night, with Arizona continuing their road series in Washington, and Los Angeles again playing host to Atlanta. The top pitching matchup will be on the west coast, as Tim Hudson (9-6, 3.19 ERA) will take the mound for the Braves against the Dodgers' Derek Lowe (6-8, 4.02).

Hudson is coming off a strong outing against the Astros in which he gave up just one earned run on four hits over seven innings (with six strikeouts). The righthander, though, is just 2-2 over his last four starts, and he allowed six earned runs in both of the losses.

Lowe is also 2-2 over his last four starts, but he earned the win last time out despite struggling - the righthander surrendered four earned runs on eight hits over five innings versus the Giants. That made up for the hard-luck loss Lowe suffered on June 29 against the Angels, when he allowed just one earned run on five hits in seven innings.

Back on the east coast the Diamondbacks are expected to send Micah Owings (6-7, 5.15 ERA) to the hill to take on the Nats' John Lannan (4-9, 3.60 ERA). Owings, who hasn't been very sharp lately, missed his last start because of a sore back. Yusmeiro Petit (0-1, 3.29 ERA) filled in nicely for Owings in a spot start (one earned runs on two hits over six innings versus the Brewers) and could end up stealing his spot on the staff.

Lannan has been a solid contributor for the Nationals this season, despite the unimpressive won-loss record. The lefthander is an ugly 0-5 with three no-decisions over his past eight starts, but he surrendered three or fewer earned runs in seven of those outings. Washington managed to score a mere 14 runs over those eight contests.

Other games on the National League's schedule for Wednesday include Florida at San Diego, Houston at Pittsburgh, San Francisco at the New York Mets, Colorado at Milwaukee, and Cincinnati at the Chicago Cubs. As well, Mark Mulder is expected to make his season starting debut for the Cardinals in their road game against the Phillies.

Over in the Junior Circuit, a couple of the league's top clubs will be sending their aces out to battle on Wednesday afternoon, with Minnesota's Livan Hernandez (9-5, 5.18 ERA) taking on Boston's Josh Beckett (8-5, 3.70 ERA) at Fenway Park in a 1:05pm ET start. Both the Red Sox and the Twins find themselves in second place in their divisions.

The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays will play the finale of their two-game series on Wednesday afternoon. Other AL action on Wednesday's schedule includes Cleveland at Detroit, Baltimore at Toronto, the Los Angeles Angels at Texas, and the Chicago White Sox at Kansas City. As well, the Athletics will host the M's in late action.

Finally, fans of the WNBA have a pair of games on the schedule for Wednesday night. The Atlanta Dream, who are 0-7 (4-3 ATS) on the road, will travel to Minnesota to take on the Lynx, while the Los Angeles Sparks will be at home and looking to take care of the Houston Comets. That first game starts at 8:00pm ET, the other one at 10:30pm ET.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

Observations of a confused A's fan

-- Rich Harden has been on DL six times in six years, so not totally against this trade, but at 48-41, the A's cannot throw in the towel on this season. They must still try to win-- when I say that, obviously I mean the front office, not the players.

-- Wouldn't be stunned if Joe Blanton got dealt to St Louis, and A's brought Gio Gonzalez up to round out the rotation. Lot of pressure now on the Cardinals to make a deal.

-- Sean Gallagher made ten starts for the Cubs; home team won all ten games. He should get a good shot with the A's.

-- Maybe the New York media will finally figure out that Billy Beane doesn't trade his pitchers to American League clubs.

-- A's won Monday without getting a walk, first time they did that since June 1, 2006 against the Twins.

-- Who the hell would have guessed that Duchscherer might be the best starting pitcher in the American League?

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

We'll run the American League draft stuff tomorrow, but for a week in early July, there's a lot to talk about..

        13) Brett Favre still wants to play, but the Packers don’t want him to, so why not send him back where he came from, to the Falcons? Atlanta could use a QB to both sell tickets and take some heat off Matt Ryan; Favre is southerner who was drafted by Atlanta. It makes a certain amount of sense.

        12) Troy Tulowitzki got 16 stitches in palm of his right hand and went back on DL after he smashed a maple bat in disgust against a wall, and the shattered bat sliced his hand. In past, teams have hung punching bags so that players can take out frustrations in that way—not a bad idea.

        11) UGa IV, late English bulldog mascot of Georgia Bulldogs, not only is buried in Sanford Stadium with his fellow mascots, he’s buried in a marble vault. Marble.

        10) Over the past two seasons, Nick Johnson has played in 38 of a possible 253 games; Eric Chavez has played 113 games out of a possible 252. Johnson made $5.5M LY, Chavez $9.5M.

        9) 49er QB Alex Smith is on his fourth offensive coordinator in last four seasons; working for Mike Martz is usually good for QBs, but Smith has to be at least a little shellshocked. Martz' system is very complex and tough to master.

        8) Duke was supposed to pay Louisville $450,000 to get out of playing three football games against the Cardinals, but Duke lawyers argued that the Blue Devils are so bad, U of L should have no problem in finding an opponent of similar ability to Duke. The judge agreed, and Duke saved $450,000. Now they have to hope their recruits don’t read the legal journals.

        7) Hiroki Kuroda’s last four home starts add up this way: three runs allowed in 32.1 IP. Must be the mound at Chavez Ravine.

        6) USC Trojans are freakin’ 70-8 over the last six seasons, and one of those losses came as 42-point favorite against Stanford last season. They must have a recruiting juggernaut to always be this good. Pac-10 is a really competitive league.

        5) Lenny Dykstra’s son Cutter walked six times in recent rookie league game. What inspires someone to name their kid Cutter?

        4) Attendance in Milwaukee last night: 42,530, 630 over listed capacity for Miller Park. Lookalikes: Indiana hoop coach Tom Crean and Brewers' owner Mark Attanasio.

        3) A total of 6,844 entrants started in the Main Event at World Series of Poker this year; first prize will be a cool $9,119,517.

        2) I don’t know much about Madonna and even less about her religious beliefs, but anyone who can take a $28M a year client away from scumweasel agent Scott Boras is OK with me. Now if she could only convince Matt Holliday (leftfielder on my fantasy team) to stay in Colorado, that would be excellent.

        1) Minor league teams have some terrific promotions, maybe the best one this season will be this Friday night when it will be Tommy John Bobblearm Night at the home of Bridgeport Bluefish, in honor of the famous lefty who is team’s manager, as well as the namesake of the now-famous elbow operation.

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies [ESPN | 7:05 PM ET]

Cardinals: Mark Mulder makes his first start of the season for the Cards, and that's not necessarily a good thing. In three starts last year, Mulder was 0-3 with an awful 12.27 ERA. Things haven't been any better for Mulder in 2008. In two appearances as a relief pitcher, he has a 13.50 ERA and teams are hitting a ridiculous .571 against him. Mulder has started three games against the Phillies in his career, going 0-1 with an ERA of 5.21.

Cardinals are 11-4 in their last 14 Wednesday games.
The OVER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - SS Cesar Izturis (.241; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Phillies (-135, O/U 10.5): J.A. Happ gets his second start of the year after winning his first outing against the Mets. In that game Happ allowed two runs in 4.2 innings of work, although he did walk four batters. In two starts over his career, teams are hitting .278 against Happ. He's also allowed three home runs in those two outings.

Phillies are 1-9 in their last 10 home games.
Phillies are 2-12 in their last 14 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - RP Tom Gordon (5-4; elbow) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

Indians: The only people happy to see Paul Byrd on the mound are Tigers fans. Byrd has dropped five straight decisions, allowing 25 runs in 25.1 innings over that span. One bright spot for the struggling Byrd is that he's had success against the Tigers throughout his career, going 9-2 with a solid 3.49 ERA in 17 starts. Betting against Byrd on the road this season has been like visiting an ATM machine. He's just 1-8 with an ERA of 7.21 away from home.

Indians are 0-9 in their last 9 games overall.
Indians are 7-24 in their last 31 road games.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Tigers (-150, O/U 10): It's been all or nothing for Eddie Bonine in his four starts this year. In his two strong outings, Bonine allowed just three runs in 15 innings pitched. However, in his two poor performances, he's given up 11 runs in only eight innings of work. Bonine is coming off a terrible outing against the Twins where he allowed seven runs over 2.2 innings. Bonine has won both of his starts at home this season and the UNDER has cashed his last two times out.

Tigers are 23-5 in their last 28 games as a favorite.
Tigers are 10-3 in their last 13 Wednesday games.

Key Injuries - 1B Carlos Guillen (.286; rest) is questionable.
OF Magglio Ordonez (.307; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Colorado Rockies at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Rockies: Glendon Rusch comes out of the bullpen to make his second start of the season for Colorado. Rusch has been dismal as a relief pitcher for the Rockies this year, sporting a less-than-impressive 7.36 ERA and allowing 13 walks in 25 innings pitched. Rusch has had success as a starter against the Brewers in the past, going 4-2 with a solid 3.59 ERA in eight career starts versus Milwaukee.

Rockies are 7-27 in their last 34 road games.
The UNDER is 10-1 in Colorado's last 11 Wednesday games.

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                    MLB

                    Wednesday, July 9

                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking Pitchers
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Edwin Jackson, Tampa Bay Rays (5-6, 4.08 ERA)

After five straight so-so performances, Jackson has settled into a groove and rattled off three straight impressive performances.

Maybe it's the red-hot Rays who have inspired him during a recent eight-game winning streak, but Jackson has allowed just 15 hits and six earned runs in 21 innings over his last three outings. Unfortunately, the Rays only managed to turn that into one run, but you can see the value shaping up here.

Jackson doesn't get his results with flash. He doesn't rack up strikeouts. Doesn't give up many walks either. He just keeps the ball on the ground most of the time so his fielders can make plays.

He's been favored in his last four starts but that trend should come to a halt Wednesday in an early afternoon game at Yankee Stadium.

Carlos Zambrano, Chicago Cubs (9-3, 2.96 ERA)

Zambrano started licking his chops last week when he saw the Cincinnati Reds coming up on the schedule. Zambrano has roasted the Reds the last three times he's faced them, which includes two starts this year.

Most recently he shut them out on May 6 when he allowed just three hits over eight innings as a slight favorite. He also held them to just two runs in seven innings in a 12-3 victory in April.

Besides that, Zambrano loves pitching at home where he is 4-0 this season with a 2.40 ERA.

                    Slumping

Johan Santana, New York Mets (7-7, 2.96 ERA)

Don't ask Santana how he is doing lately. The guy is pitching the lights out, but can't buy a win no matter what he does.

The Mets have lost Santana's last six starts despite the fact the lefty gave up just 11 runs during that span and went at least six innings in all six starts. He has held opponents to three runs or fewer in eight of his last nine outings and has only been pulled before the seventh inning twice.

Under bettors might want to take a look at Wednesday's matchup against the Giants. Santana has received just seven runs of support in his last four starts.

                        San Francisco at N.Y. Mets (-210, 7)

San Fran starter Jonathan Sanchez has some solid numbers - an 8-4 record with a sub-4.00 ERA on a terrible Giants team. Also, he has given up more than three earned runs just three times all year and won the NL Player of the Week award for the last week in June.

The only problem is when he does get hit, he gets hit hard. Sanchez allowed seven earned in each of those tough starts and does have control problems from time to time.

Today he faces a Mets offense that's knocking the rawhide off the Rawlings. New York beat up on Giants ace Tim Lincecum last night and has now plated at least seven runs in six of its last eight games. The Mets are hitting .322 over their last 10.

                        Pick: Over

                        Cleveland at Detroit (-150, 10)

It'd be a stretch to say CC Sabathia got out while the getting was good considering we haven't seen much good from the Indians all season, but it does look like things are only going to get worse from the Indians. Possibly much worse.

The Tribe heads into today's game having dropped nine straight and the blame should be spread equally across the entire clubhouse. Over the last 10 games the offense is hitting just .240, while the rotation works on a 6.20 ERA and the bullpen checks in with a 8.20 ERA. It isn't pretty.

Neither are Paul Byrd's recent numbers. He has allowed at least four earned runs in five of his last six starts, five of which ended up as losses.

                        Pick: Detroit

                          Thursday, July 10

                          STARS
                          Tuesday

                          - CC Sabathia, Brewers, won his Milwaukee debut, giving up two earned runs and five hits in six innings for a 7-3 win over Colorado.

                          - Miguel Cabrera, Tigers, hit two home runs and went 4-for-4, lifting Detroit to a 9-2 win over Cleveland.

                          - Ryan Dempster, Cubs, pitched seven strong innings to run his home record to 10-0 in a 7-3 win over Cincinnati.

                          - Chase Headley, Padres, had three hits and four RBIs to help San Diego beat Florida 10-1.

                          - Mike Pelfrey, Mets, won his fifth straight start in New York's 7-0 win over San Francisco.

                          KEEPING UP

One day after the Milwaukee Brewers landed an ace, the Chicago Cubs answered by acquiring talented right-hander Rich Harden in a six-player deal with the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday. With CC Sabathia going to Milwaukee, Harden was the best available pitcher, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said.

                          LONG NIGHT

Both Chicago and Kansas City used six pitchers in a 4-hour, 20-minute game eventually won 8-7 by the White Sox in 13 innings Tuesday night. The teams combined for two errors, three wild pitches, a passed ball, a hit batter and four double plays. Perhaps the weirdest sight of all was the two-run sacrifice fly by A.J. Pierzynski that gave the White Sox a 7-5 lead in the top of the 11th.

                          FREE SWINGING

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz reported no pain Tuesday, a day after he took his first on-field batting practice since injuring a tendon in his left wrist almost six weeks ago. Ortiz will continue to take batting practice with the team and work up to the point where he can test his wrist with a swing similar to the one he injured it on in the ninth inning on May 30 in Baltimore. Ortiz will spend some time in the minors on a rehab stint after he is cleared to play.

                          THE EH TEAM

The addition of Rich Harden to the Cubs' roster gives them two Canadians from British Columbia, along with Ryan Dempster.

                          ON A TEAR

Detroit beat Cleveland 9-2 Tuesday night, and the Tigers lead the majors with 21 wins since June 7.

                          BIG SHOES

Jeremy Sowers (0-5) took recently traded CC Sabathia's turn in the Cleveland rotation and was roughed up after getting through the first two innings of a 9-2 loss to the Tigers unscathed. Sowers ended up allowing seven runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings.

                          STRONG STARTS

Andy Pettitte gave up only four hits over eight innings in leading the Yankees to a 5-0 win over Tampa Bay. He walked none.
                          - Matt Harrison pitched seven strong innings in his major league debut to help Texas beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2.

                          WELCOME BACK

Braves right fielder Jeff Francoeur played his first game since returning from a three-game minor league stint in Double-A Mississippi. He had a single in five at-bats Tuesday night as Atlanta beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-3. He also threw out a runner in the third inning. The assist was his 51st in the outfield since his big league debut on July 7, 2005, the most in the majors during that stretch.

                          RERUN

Manny Ramirez hit a game-tying two-run homer as part of a four-run eighth-inning rally to help the Boston Red Sox past the Minnesota Twins 6-5 on Tuesday night. It was the second straight game Ramirez came through in the eighth inning to rally the Red Sox. Ramirez drove home Boston's only run in a 1-0 victory on an RBI single Monday night against Minnesota.

                          FALLING STARS

The Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Houston Astros to their seventh loss in eight games with a rain-soaked 4-3 win Tuesday night.

                          SPEAKING

"The only two words I can give you for me out there are: ‘I stink,' " Scott Linebrink, who blew a 7-5 lead for Chicago in the 11th before the White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 8-7 in 13 innings.
