Interesting that so many people are down on Burnett. His ERA is bad, but I think he's arguably been the unluckiest pitcher in the game this year. His strikeout rate is down a little from last year, but still impressive at almost a K/inning. His walks are up a little from last year, which is a little disturbing, but his HRs are wayyy down, which is a good sign. His average velocity on his fastball is still 7th best in the game and he's had no reservations about throwing that nasty curveball (27% of his pitches), which tells me that his elbow must feel fine. Throw in that opponents are hitting .339 on balls in play, compared to his career average of .291 and that relievers are only stranding 66% of his inherited runners, another career worst, and I think you've got a guy who could be an excellent buy low for a contender.
As for the actual deal that went down, I think some Cubs fans are just way too down on the prospects that they've already seen. In addition, the As get Gallagher until 2013, Murton until 2011, and Patterson until 2014. Gallagher at 22 years old never had a season above 3.4 ERA in the minors and is a career 2.71 ERA guy in 481 minor league innings with a K/inning. Patterson is hitting .323 in AAA this year. Murton is a throwaway, but he's needed a change of scenery for a long time. And Donaldson is a flyer pick because his on-base was .470 last year. If you're the As, you can plug Gallagher immediately into the 5th spot in the rotation knowing full well that Gio Gonzalez is biding his time in the PCL if you need him.

I think it's a good trade for both teams. The A's weren't gonna get a top prospect for Tanya Harden, because of the injury risk. He's only played a full season once. So they picked up four serviceable guys that are all not playing up to their potential. Gallagher is ok, Murton is a .300 hitter at the major league level, Patterson has shown some skills in the minors, and Donaldson was a 2nd round pick just two years ago, all of them are having bad seasons, so it wasn't a bad time to get them. The main thing is, the A's weren't gonna resign Harden for 10 mill a year, when he gets hurt every year. Beane knows his shit.

We r talking about my cubbies, and in saying that we all know that there is a huge likelyhood that Harden blows out his arm during warmups and never pitches for us again.
BUT, if God smiles down on us and keeps Harden healthy, him and Gaudin are going to help the Cubs big time.
Ctt8410.... you are 100% correct on the guys the Cubs gave up, but the reason that we don't mind it is because Murton and Patterson were going no where with us. They were stuck in Cubbie purgatory because of all that are ahead of them. Gallagher was the one piece that I cringed a bit when i saw his name, but to get something you have to give something and that's the case with Sean.
All three could be very decent Major League players....but they couldn't help the Cubs this year, and in all reality, this is the year that the Cubs might actually go a bit further.
