Eric Patterson -- Speedy 2nd baseman with a great glove that can play the outfield also -- jury is still out if he could hit

Now---which is it......Is Patterosn a Great Glove, or is he HORRIBLE in the field......

would someone please clarify this for me.....I'm confused....

he is a horrible outfielder ... they say he is a good second baseman ... but to me a professional ballplayer should be able to catch a fly ball ... easiest play defensively in the game ... no bad hops on a fly ball ....

Season ticket holder here. The Patterson having a "great glove" had to be sarcastic. He was a 2nd baseman moved to outfield. I can't imagine how bad of a 2nd baseman he had to be, because he is brutal in LF. He will be just like his brother...up and down from the minors most of his career.

Murton is decent, if you want a .290 hitter that slugs .290. He is the definition of "warning track power".

        Gallagher is solid.

The young catcher was a top prospect like a year or two ago, but batting .217 this year in minors.

thanks----this is the article I read, and unfortunately they had no defensive stats......If he fields like he hits, they gave up ZILCH...

          ************************************************** ********************

The Cubs received the right-handed Harden and righty Chad Gaudin for pitcher Sean Gallagher, outfielders Matt Murton and Eric Patterson, and minor leaguer John Donaldson.

"We've been working on Mr. Harden for a few weeks now," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said.

Harden, scheduled to be a free agent after the 2009 season, is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts this season. He's scheduled to $4.75 million this season.

The oft-injured righty missed a month earlier this season because of a right shoulder strain. It was his sixth trip to the disabled list in his six-year career.

The Cubs said they expected Harden would join the team Wednesday.

"We hope to pitch him one time before the break," Hendry said.

Hendry said the trade was not a reaction to the Sabathia trade by the Brewers, who were four games behind the NL Central-leading Cubs heading into Tuesday night.

"Our mode all year is we're trying to get better," he said.

Chicago also received Gaudin, who was 5-3 win a 3.59 ERA in 26 games -- including six starts. Last season, he was a starter all season and went 11-13 with a 4.42 ERA.

To land the pair, the Cubs had to part with Murton, a former top prospect who has yet to live up to his billing. In his fourth season, Murton has shuttled between Triple-A Iowa and Chicago. He's hitting .250 in 40 at-bats.

They also traded the right-handed Gallagher, who is 3-4 with a 4.45 ERA in 12 games, including 10 starts, in his second season.

Patterson, the brother of Corey Patterson, was sent to the minors on July 3, the fourth time this year he's been sent down. An outfielder who can also play second base, Patterson was hitting .237 with a homer and seven RBI in 38 at-bats with the big league club.

Donaldson, a catcher for Single A Peoria, was hitting .217 with six homers.

"You're not getting a guy like this without it hurting a little bit," Hendry said.

So what you're saying is this was a steal for the Cubs.

                Papi

you were right......I found this from CBS Sports

Patterson is a free swinger, but the second baseman/outfielder is a speed-and-power talent who could get a big-time opportunity in Oakland, which is rebuilding around guys like Patterson. It is not yet clear if the A's will call up Patterson, but his best chance to at-bats comes in left field right now -- where he is not real good defensively.

                (Updated 07/08/2008).

                GO CUBS

Great trade for the Cubs provided he stays healthy and we all know that is a tough task...

It's possible....just depends on who the owner is.

If the owner is a cheap skate, which I can't see how that could be since he'll be paying close to a billion dollars to buy the club.....we'd be in trouble.

But if he's willing to keep spending the money that has been spent the last two years, we might reap the benefits.

Rich Harden isn't the answer. I'm not calling to get World Series tickets....but we're better then we were a couple hours ago. And like Pinella said...Hendy is doing the things to make the club better. I can't fault that.

HE IS A SECOND BASEMAN !!!!

                              GEEZ

HE HAS A GOOD DLOVE AT 2ND BASE

CUBS USED HIM IN THE OUT FIELD WHEN THEY WERE INJURED ( SORIANO , JOHNSON, FUKEDOME FOR A FEW DAYS)

HE IS NOT AN OUT FIELDER AND LOOKED LIKE SHIT OUT THERE

SO--- THEY TOOK A 2ND BASEMAN ( WHERE HE HAS A GOOD GLOVE) AND PUT HIM IN THE OUTFIELD WHICH IS NOT HIS POSITION ( WHERE IN 5 GAMES HE LOOKED HORRIBLE )

                              GOT IT ?
