July 9, 2008 WSOP Day 2A Results A little less than a quarter of the field was pared yesterday, and the second flight of players advancing from the first round play today. The chip leader is Brian Schaedlich with 801,000, more than double the total of second-place Hunter Frey. There are lots of unknowns in the top spots, with Mark Vos the first well-known name to show up on the leader board with 155,100 (Mark was one of the four contributing writers to our poker-tournament book Kill Everyone). Out of the tournament are Barry Greenstein, Kathy Liebert, Erick Lindgren, Paul Wasicka, Robert Varkonyi, and this year's H.O.R.S.E. winner, Scotty Nguyen.

July 10, 2008 WSOP Day 2B Results With the second round completed, 1,307 remain and the field will play as one from this point forward. Yesterday's chip leader was Peter Biebel with 531,000, which puts him in second overall behind 2A leader Brian Schaedlich's 801,000. Big names eliminated yesterday included John Juanda, former champions Joe Hachem and Carlos Mortensen,
and defending champion Jerry Yang.

My buddy Ray Henson is around 50th, with 219K in chips. He pocketed $472K LY with 12th place finish in Main Event. Kid is a player.

Yang is a joke....might be the worst champ yet. He definitely gives moneymaker a run for his money.

The question is: What determines who exactly IS a big-name player.

My buddy Henson is ranked #116 in Bluff magazine PlayerOfYear rankings. It was pretty exciting getting updates from him last year, as he was the chip leader for a short period in the late stages last year. Unfortunately, he had sold stakes for 70% of his entry, so he rec'd 30% of his $472K purse ( nearly 180K)

Some of the bigger names like Johnny Chan is #666.

I played in the main event for the first time this year. Busted out at dinner break on day 2A. Awesome experience. For those arguing poker is all luck, you could not be more wrong. Luck will win some hands for sure, but skill will always win in the long term. Mathematics baby!

They def. get paid.....big name guys have contracts just like athletes have contracts from Nike, etc.....Ive noticed that the "non pros" arent wearing gear until later in the tourney when they get to final table action, then they have gear on.


Hope this Henson guy keeps it going....Id love to see him and Chan at the final table.

You also have amateurs wearing gear if they won the big online tournaments on the websites to pay their WSOP buy-in.

July 11, 2008 In the Money Players still left in the World Series of Poker main event are getting paid. Yesterday's action got down to the money positions, with 666th and below getting at least $21,230 for their $10,000 investment. Going into today, 474 players remain, which means all are guaranteed at least $27,020. Leading the chip count is Jeremy Joseph with 1,458,000. Interrupting the list of unknown names near the top are Dag Martin Mikkelson (931,000), James McManus (875,000), and Matt Matros (822,500. Phil Hellmuth is lurking with $475,000. Steve Chung was this year's "bubble boy" for finishing in 667th place; he'll receive a free entry into next year's tournament. Notable eliminations yesterday included Chris Moneymaker, Tex Bart, and Patrik Antonius.
