    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Tips and Trends
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Red Sox: Jon Lester is pitching well since throwing a no-hitter on May 19th, going 3-1 with a no-decision in his last five starts. Over that span, Lester has allowed 10 runs in 32.1 innings of work. Lester hasn't been the same pitcher away from Fenway Park, however. In seven road starts this season, he's just 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA. Since his no hitter, the OVER is 3-1 in games with Lester on the mound.

Red Sox are 1-7 in their last 8 games as an underdog.
Red Sox are 9-2 in the last 11 meetings.

Key Injuries - 1B Kevin Youkilis (.305; back) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Phillies (-115, O/U 9.5): Like a fine wine, Jamie Moyer keeps getting better with age. Moyer is 6-2 with two no-decisions over his last 10 starts, with the Phillies emerging victorious in eight of those games. He's been dominating on the road but just average at home, going 3-2 with an ERA of 5.53. The Red Sox must be happy to see Moyer on the mound. He's just 6-11 with a 6.69 ERA in 20 career starts against Boston. The OVER is 6-2 in Moyer's last eight starts.

Phillies are 6-0 in Moyer's last six starts.
The UNDER is 8-1 in Philadelphia's last 9 games following a win.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Chicago Cubs at Tampa Bay Rays
    [7:10 PM ET]

Cubs: Ryan Dempster has gone from having a surprising season to making a case to be the NL's starting pitcher in the All-Star game with an 8-2 record and 2.82 ERA. In his last 10 starts, Dempster has only lost one decision and given up more than three runs twice. He's been exceptionally tough in his last 26.1 innings pitched, allowing just nine runs. Dempster has seven career starts against the Rays, going 3-4 with a 4.50 ERA

Cubs are 16-4 in their last 20 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-2-1 in Chicago's last 11 interleague games.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is out at least 6 weeks.

    PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Rays (-145, O/U 7.5): Scott Kazmir has been a beast since coming off the DL, going 6-2 with a 1.74 ERA. Kazmir has allowed one run or less in five of his eight starts this season. Hitters might as well take the day off when facing Kazmir at Tropicana Field where he's 4-0 with a ridiculous 0.35 ERA. Kazmir's last two outings haven't been great but both came on the road, where he allowed five runs over 14.1 innings after giving up just two runs in his prior 33 innings of work.

Rays are 21-5 in their last 26 games on field turf.
The UNDER is 12-4-1 in Tampa Bay's last 17 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Carl Crawford (.265) is serving the final game of his 4-game suspension.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

New York Mets at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 ET]

Mets: Johan Santana takes to the road, where he's 4-3 with a solid 2.80 ERA on the year. The Mets ace has been his typical dominant self in his last three starts, giving up just three runs in 20.2 innings of work. While Santana has been successful against most teams he's faced, the Angels aren't one of them. In eight career starts versus Anaheim, Santana is just 2-3 with a 4.05 ERA. The UNDER is 4-1 in Santana's last five starts.

Mets are 8-1 in their last 9 interleague games.
The OVER is 10-4 in New York's last 14 interleague games.
Key Injuries - OF Moises Alou (.367; calf) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Ryan Church (.300; concussion) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Angels (-125, O/U 7): John Lackey has been spectacular since coming off the DL in mid-May. Lackey has allowed two runs or less in five starts this year. Control has been key to Lackey's success so far in 2008. He's struck out 32, while walking just eight in 44.1 innings pitched. Teams are batting just .208 against Lackey in his three home starts. Don't expect a lot of runs with Lackey on the mound. All six of his starts have gone UNDER the total.

Angels are 16-5 in their last 21 Tuesday games.
The UNDER is 14-5 in LA's last 19 home games.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: 4

      SCOREBOARD

      Tuesday, June 17

New York Mets at Los Angeles Angels (10:05 p.m. EDT). The Mets play their first game under interim manager Jerry Manuel following the firing of Willie Randolph. Johan Santana (7-4, 2.85 ERA) takes the mound for New York against John Lackey (3-1, 1.83 ERA) in a matchup of aces.

      STARS

      Monday

      - Ryan Howard, Phillies, homered twice and tripled to drive in four runs as Philadelphia beat Boston 8-2. It was Howard's second multihomer game in four nights.

      - Carlos Beltran, Mets, homered twice in a 9-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

      - Jair Jurrjens, Braves, pitched shutout ball for a career-high 7 2-3 innings to lead Atlanta over Colorado 7-1 at Coors Field. Jurrjens (7-3) leads all major league rookies in wins.

      - John Bowker, Giants, hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift San Francisco over Detroit 8-6.

      MAKING CHANGES

The New York Mets fired manager Willie Randolph and two coaches following a 9-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Bench coach Jerry Manuel takes over on an interim basis for Randolph, who led the Mets to within one win of the 2006 World Series. He became the first big league manager to get fired this season. Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto also were dismissed. ... Stuck with the worst record in baseball, Seattle fired general manager Bill Bavasi. Vice president/associate general manager Lee Pelekoudas became interim GM. Bavasi was in his fifth season as general manager, only once turning out a club that finished with a winning record. That was last year when the Mariners won a surprising 88 games.

      FALSE STEP

Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang is expected to be sidelined until at least September after injuring his foot running the bases. An examination in New York showed Wang partially tore a tendon and sprained his right foot Sunday during New York's 13-0 interleague win at Houston. He will be on crutches and wear a protective boot for a minimum of six weeks, the latest blow to the team's banged-up pitching staff.

      ON THE MEND

Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed two runs and three hits over five innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket, his first game action since straining his rotator cuff last month. The Boston Red Sox right-hander dominated Lehigh Valley hitters for the first four innings, throwing just 39 pitches while facing the minimum 12 batters. The IronPigs, the Philadelphia Phillies' Triple-A affiliate, then used three hits, a walk and a wild pitch to score two runs in the fifth. Matsuzaka faced 19 hitters, striking out five and throwing 47 of his 65 pitches for strikes. He's not sure when he'll return to the Red Sox, however.

      CHIPPER WATCH

Chipper Jones went 2-for-4 with a walk, raising his average a point to .403 in Atlanta's 7-1 victory at Colorado. Jones entered the game mired in a 2-for-15 slump.

      SLIDING OVER

With his team in huge trouble, Mariners manager John McLaren decided he's going to start tinkering. His first move: sliding Ichiro Suzuki back into right field. Suzuki was back in his corner outfield spot for the first time since the end of the 2006 season on Monday night when the Mariners, with the worst record in baseball, opened a three-game series against Florida. "It feels like going to my yard,'' Suzuki said through a translator after Seattle's 6-1 loss. "They came to me about it and said, 'Let's do this for the future.''' Suzuki switched to center field last year when the Mariners signed Jose Guillen as a free agent. Suzuki played 155 games in center last season and all 69 this year before Monday night.

      SWINGS

Philadelphia's Cole Hamels (7-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings of an 8-2 victory over Boston. Since consecutive poor outings last month, the left-hander has a 1.50 ERA in his past three starts. ... Mets closer Billy Wagner earned his second save in two days after blowing three straight chances.

      SLUMPS

The Mariners lost 6-1 to Florida for their eighth straight defeat at home, the team's longest home losing streak in nearly 12 years. ... Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez (1-7) hasn't won in 13 starts since April 8 against Atlanta.

      SNAPPED

Andrew Miller allowed one run and six hits over seven innings for Florida in a 6-1 victory at Seattle. The left-hander matched the longest outing of his career and won for the first time in his past five starts. ... San Francisco beat Detroit 8-6 for its first interleague win in seven tries this year. The Tigers had their season-best six-game winning streak stopped.

      STREAKING

Marcus Thames homered twice and drove in three runs for Detroit in an 8-6 loss at Seattle. Thames connected for the fourth consecutive game.

      SPEAKING

"My only message is simple. The National League needs to join the 21st century. They need to grow up and join the 21st century.'' - Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner, complaining that the NL plays without a designated hitter. New York pitcher Chien-Ming Wang injured his foot running the bases Sunday in an interleague game at Houston and is expected to be sidelined until at least September.

      SEASONS

      June 17

1915 - George "Zip'' Zabel of the Chicago Cubs was called into the game against the Brooklyn Dodgers with two outs in the first inning. He won 4-3 in the 19th inning in the longest relief effort in the majors.

1943 - Player-manager Joe Cronin of the Boston Red Sox hit a three-run pinch homer in both games of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia A's. The Red Sox won the opener 5-4 and lost the second game 8-7.

1960 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox connected for his 500th career home run off the Cleveland Indians. Williams, the fourth player to accomplish the feat, hit a two-run homer off Wynn Hawkins in a 3-1 win.

1971 - Don Kessinger of the Chicago Cubs went 6-for-6, with five singles and a double, in a 7-6, 10-inning decision over the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

1978 - Ron Guidry of the New York Yankees struck out 18 California Angels to set an American League record for left-handers. Guidry, who struck out 15 in the first six innings, ended with a 4-0 four-hitter.

1993 - Baseball owners voted 26-2 in favor of expanding the playoffs for the first time in 25 years, doubling the teams that qualify to eight starting in 1994.

2003 - Jae Seo, David Weathers and Armando Benitez combined for a one-hitter as the New York Mets beat Florida 5-0. It was the third straight game the Mets were involved in a one-hitter.

2005 - Arizona gave up 10 runs in the third inning of its 13-6 loss to Cleveland. The Diamondbacks, who allowed 10 runs in the sixth inning on June 15 in Chicago, became the first team since the 1969 Mets to allow 10 runs in an inning in consecutive games. The Mets did it on one day - during a doubleheader against Houston.

2007 - Brandon Watson extended his hitting streak to 43 games, breaking a 95-year-old International League record with a base hit in the Columbus Clippers' 9-8 loss to the Ottawa Lynx. Jack Lelivelt set the IL record for the Rochester Hustlers in 1912.

2007 - Frank Thomas hit his record-breaking 244th homer as a designated hitter in Toronto's 4-2 loss to Washington. The solo shot in the third inning moved Thomas past Edgar Martinez for the most homers by a DH in major league history.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Chicago at Tampa Bay (139, 7 1/2)

It's hard to lay the chalk against the club with the best record in baseball, but the Chicago Cubs aren't a great road team (16-17) and they'll be going against one of the best left-handers in the major leagues. Scott Kazmir has been lights-out this season, but when he's playing at home, he's way too good to bet against. Kazmir is 4-0 in four home (all against top-notch lineups) and has an incredible ERA of 0.35.

On top of that, the Cubs had their "off day" disturbed yesterday by the scheduled Hall of Fame game in Cooperstown, Ohio. Although the game was rained out, the Cubs were forced to get out of bed for an early morning flight from Toronto to Cleveland, followed by a 1 1/2 hour drive to Cooperstown.

          Pick: Rays

New York Mets at Los Angeles Angels (-109, 7)

How does a club react after its manager is fired in the most cowardly fashion imaginable - announced via news release in the middle of the night while the club is on a road trip 3,000 miles from home? Players probably won't be terribly impressed by the actions of their employer.

Aside from the firing of Willie Randolph, pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto were also given pink slips last night. According to Associated Press reports, it seems players weren’t even aware of the firings when they were contacted after the club made the public announcement.

Expect a shocked and lethargic Mets club to come out today. Even with Johan Santana on the mound, it wouldn't be surprising to see an subtle mutiny from players.

          Pick: Angels
