    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Celtics still hadn't gotten back to Boston early in evening Monday; airplane had issues. Did they practice at LAX?

-- Ryan Howard hit two homers and a triple as Phillies routed Boston Monday; the big man is heating up.

-- Carlos Beltran hit two of first three pitches he saw Monday night over the fence in Anaheim; DH must appeal to him.

-- Marcus Thames' last seven hits have been home runs; he hit couple taters off Lincecum Monday night.

-- Rocco Mediate was ranked 158th in world before this week since 1986, the worst-ranked player to win US Open was 1996 when 99th-ranked Steve Jones won.

-- As if things couldn't get worse for Oakland Raiders, Javon Walker, who just signed six-year, $55M contract, was found beaten and unconscious on a Las Vegas street Monday, at 7:19am. I'm guessing he wasn't out for an early morning jog.

Tuesday's List of 13: Runnin' bases in the National League

Diamondbacks— Micah Owings is 0-3, 10.19 in last four starts; could be they bring Max Scherzer back to majors as a starter? Snakes are 20-8 within division, 17-25 outside of it.

Braves— 10-25 on the road, 3-18 in one-run games, still only 6.5 games out of first. Chipper's been in slump since hurting quad. They've used nine starting pitchers, Phillies just five.

Cubs— They're just 18-15 vs division foes, 27-10 vs all others; they're 9-0 at home when Dempster starts. 29-8 at home, 16-17 on road-- World Series preview against the Rays this week?

Reds— In last place despite 21-14 home record, 12-7 record in one-run games. Have solid young nucleus; even Dunn is only 28. Need more groundball pitchers for small home ballpark.

Rockies— Despite an awful first two months, are just nine out of first in shaky NL West. Get Tulowitzki back later this week, will finally be healthy. Colorado is 11-3 in Cook's last 14 starts.

Marlins— Lead league in home runs, still just three games out of first in NL East, four games out of Wild Card. They've won a couple world championships, but haven't won a division title. Will be getting back couple of injured pitchers in August.

Astros— Lost last five games, 14 of last 17, including seven of last eight at home. Biggest question is how was this team ever 30-23? They signed Michael Bourn to be leadoff hitter, but his on-base percentage is a pathetic .293; now he hits seventh.

Dodgers— Keep in mind Joe Torre is managing for 13th year outside of the Bronx; he has never won a playoff game (0-3) in his career, other than when he had the biggest payroll to play with. Dodgers lost last seven games, scoring total of 15 runs.

Brewers— 9-3 in last dozen home games, hanging in there at 36-33; are just 16-21 on road, but 7-2 when Ben Sheets starts. Prince Fielder has a .478 slugging %age this year; he had a .618 SP LY. So much for the union of hitting and being a vegetarian.

Metropolitans— Would it kill Willie Randolph to DH Wright in AL games? Darn guy plays every inning of every game- same with Reyes. As for the front office, make a freakin' decision; go on record, either fire Willie or give him the rest of the season.

Phillies— 17-8 vs lefty starters, even though two best hitters are lefty; Phils (20-17) and Cards are only NL teams who have a winning road record-- rest of NL East is 52-84 (.382) on road. Rumored to be in market for Erik Bedard, if Seattle dumps him.

Pirates— Bucs are improved at 34-36, 21-15 at home, but they are 0-9 in last nine series openers. Pirates scored 27 runs in last four games, but split the four. They need to find a postion for Doumit (1B??) who is a really good hitter.

Cardinals— Wild Card team if playoffs started Tuesday; they are 16-10 in one-run games, 28-17 vs righty starters. One of two NL teams with winning road record. Why Jeff Weaver left the Cardinals in free agency ($$$) is one of great mysteries of life.

Padres— As dismal as season has been for Friars, they're third in NL West, just 6.5 games out of first, and could be healthy in short while if Young comes back from facial fractures. Padres won nine of last eleven games, have Peavy back healthy.

Giants— Is it ever warm in San Francisco? Every time I watch the Giants, people have hoods on in stands. They have really good nucleus of young starting pitching (Lincecum, Sanchez, Cain). They're 15-13 vs division foes, 16-27 vs everyone else.

Nationals— Just 15-21 on road, but 6-0 when Redding starts in road game; they've acquired some characters (Dukes, Milledge Loduca), questionale way to build a team. Christian Guzman is hitting .311, could make All-Star team. Have second-worst mark at home in National League, in first year in new ballpark.

              NBA Games

Celtics try to win NBA title, but had long Monday trying to get back from LA- they still weren't back early Monday night. C's are 12-1 at home in playoffs, covering 8 of 13 as home favorite. Lakers need better defense on pick/roll; no team has ever been down 3-2 in Finals and won last two games on road to win the title. Allen is supposed to be in Boston after his young kid was hospitalized in LA. Perkins is questionable (shoulder), Rondo has sore shoulder. By this time of year, everyone has injuries to some degree. Quick turnaround here; pressure on Celtics to close out series and avoid decisive Game 7 Thursday.

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics [ABC | 9 PM ET]

Lakers: Regardless of the team's performance in the first two games of the series at Boston, LA was one of the best roads teams in the NBA prior to the NBA Finals. The Lakers also still feel like they have the better bench, and they will need to prove it in Game 6 if they hope to extend this series one more game. "Right now their bench is playing a little bit better than ours is," LA head coach Phil Jackson said. "We've got some guys performing off the bench but not the unit. We're going to have to find a better way to do at that in Game 6 if we're going to survive."

The UNDER is 7-1 in LA's last 8 games as an underdog.
The UNDER is 8-2 in LA's last 10 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Celtics (-4, O/U 191): Boston will be playing an NBA-record 26th game of the postseason on Tuesday and would love to avoid a third Game 7. Fatigue is definitely a concern for Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, who believes jet lag could be a factor upon their return. In fact, the team's plane was delayed several hours on Monday before making it back home. "It's a terrible turnaround," Rivers said. "It's as tough as you can have. I think going West to East is tougher. Sleep patterns are messed up. It's a tough one. There's no way around it. But both teams have the same issue, so it could come down to a game of mental toughness, who fights the fatigue mentally better than the other group."

Celtics are 7-0 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
Celtics are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 home games.

Key Injuries - C Kendrick Perkins (6.9 ppg; shoulder) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 97

Los Angeles at Boston (-4, 192)

Suddenly the series has shifted, however slightly.

Los Angeles jumped out to another big lead in Game 5 and managed to hold on this time to crawl back into the series. Now things aren't looking so great for Boston.

It sounds more and more like Kendrick Perkins isn't going to be able to suit up again this year and the big news following Sunday's game was that Ray Allen left abruptly because one of his children had some sort of health concern. No other details were made available as the team tries to keep a lid on the story, which may not turn out to be a huge deal anyway.

Still, Boston hasn't looked good for long stretches over the last three games, finding itself in big holes before the team finally gets itself together. The Celtics aren't dominating the road to the free throw line anymore and don't seem to have the same defensive intensity that they showed in Boston - especially early in games.

That said home court means a world of difference to this team as we've seen throughout the playoffs and Paul Pierce is still carrying the club on his back.

The main issue Boston bettors should be concerned with is the way the Lakers are sharing the ball and getting secondary scoring. Los Angeles got 20 points from Lamar Odom, 19 from Pau Gasol, and 15 from Derek Fisher to go along with Kobe Bryant's 25 in Game 5. That's hard to defend no matter who you are or where you're playing.

                    Pick: Lakers

                      NBA Finals Gameday

The Los Angeles Lakers are still trailing the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, but they're also still alive as the series heads back to the east coast for Tuesday's Game 6.

Facing elimination in Game 5 on Sunday night the Lakers exploded for 39 first-quarter points to take an early 17-point lead on the Celtics. Once again, though, Boston was able to fight back and close the gap - they outscored the Lakers by 30-16 margin in the second quarter and trailed only by three points when the teams headed into the break.

This time, however, the Lakers managed to make their lead stand up. Los Angeles limited Boston to just 18 points in the third quarter, and they held on for a 103-98 victory. The Lakers still trail the best-of-seven set 3-2, but at least the Celtics didn't celebrate on their court.

Kobe Bryant scored a team-high 25 points in the victory for the Lakers, and the star guard contributed seven rebounds and four assists as well. Lamar Odom was good for 20 points and 11 boards on the night, while Pau Gasol picked up 19 points and 13 rebounds. Derek Fisher poured in 15 points, and Jordan Farmar added 11 off the bench.

Paul Pierce poured in a game-high 38 points in a losing cause for Boston, adding six rebounds and eight assists to his stats line as well. Ray Allen had 16 points in the contest, while Kevin Garnett scored 13 points and picked up 14 rebounds. Rajon Rondo was largely ineffective in the defeat; he was held to three points on just 1-of-7 shooting.

Rondo, in fact, played just over 14 minutes in the contest as he tries to overcome his ankle injury. Celtics center Kendrick Perkins missed Game 5 completely because of a strained shoulder, and he's listed as questionable to play in Game 6 on Tuesday night. Leon Powe started in Perkins' place Sunday night, but he played just under five minutes.

The Lakers had been listed as big home favorites for the third straight contest on Sunday night, but once again they failed to cover that big spread. Los Angeles was pegged as a 7.5-point home favorite in Game 5, the same spread they were given in Game 4. Back in Game 3 the Lakers were listed as an even bigger favorite - 9.5 points.

In fact, the Celtics might only be up 3-2 in the series right now, but they're 5-0 against-the-spread heading into Game 6 on Tuesday. Boston was listed as a 3-point home underdog in Game 1, and they managed to cover a small 1-point home line in Game 2.

Bettors taking the OVER on Sunday got the win - the combined score managed to get past the posted total of 193 points. The previous two games in Los Angeles had both been UNDER results, while the teams went 1-1 on the OU in Boston. Posted totals for the series have ranged from 190.5 to 195.5 with each team struggling to get to the 100-point plateau - the Lakers have done it twice, and the Celtics have reached it just once.

The oddsmakers like the Celtics' chances of wrapping up the NBA Finals at TD Banknorth Garden in Game 6 - they were opened as 4-point favorites. The total for the game opened at 192 points. If the Lakers do manage to stave off elimination again on Tuesday the teams will stay in Boston for a seventh and deciding contest on Thursday.
