Hot Lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay at Boston (-120, 9)

The Rays may be the surprise of the AL East, but they've done most of their winning at home. On the road they're a disappointing 11-14 and for any team that struggles on the road, Boston is the last place they want to be. The Red Sox are 23-5 at Fenway, good for an astonishing 17.5 units - by far the most home cash in the big leagues.

Today, the Rays will have one of their best pitchers on the mound in James Shields, but the right-hander has always struggled against the Red Sox and has never won at Fenway. In fact, the last time Shields made a start in Boston, he was yanked in the fourth inning after getting pounded for seven earned runs on 10 hits in what became a 12-4 Boston win.

On the other side, Boston's Jon Lester hasn't looked quite the same since his no-hitter last month, but he's back in his home park where he is 2-1 with a 2.72 ERA

      Pick: Red Sox

St. Louis at Washington (-110, 9)

When you find something that works in the world of betting, sometimes it's best just to ride it out. Tim Redding is definitely working for Nationals backers. He's playing on one of the worst clubs in the major leagues, but amazingly, the veteran starter has managed to lead the Nats to a 9-3 record in his starts and is ranked No. 7 on the Money Starters list with nearly eight units in the bank.

Redding will have a tough challenge against this St. Louis lineup but it will certainly help that Albert Pujols and Rick Ankiel are both expected to be out of the lineup with injuries. The Cards' pitching staff is also in rough shape with four starters and four relievers on the 15-day DL, so if there was ever a good time to bet on the Nationals, it’s probably today.

      Pick: Nationals
