    Six-pack for Thursday

According to SI.com, the six athletes who earned the most money last year..........notice no baseball guys on the list.

    6) Shaquille O'Neal, $35M-- $20M on court, $15 off it. Shame the Suns ruined their team by trading for him, though.

    5) Kobe Bryant, $35,490,625-- Somehow earned $16M off the court, despite recently being accused of a felony; Olympics this summer will be full-court press to polish his image.

    4) Floyd Mayweather Jr, $40,250,000-- For some odd reason, Vince McMahon gave him $20M to be part of WWE, so that is why he pushed A-Rod out of the top six on this list.

    3) Lebron James, $40,455.000-- Earned 70% of his money off the court; rumored to be headed to Brooklyn Nets to play on Jay-Zee's team when he becomes a free agent in two years.

    2) Phil Mickelson, $62,372,685-- Earned $53M off the course, and he isn't even close to being the best at his sport. Wow.

    1) Eldrick Woods, $127,902,706-- Earned $105 freakin' million last year, off the golf course!!! Do you realize his agent made over $5M last year, if he got just 4% of the action?

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

      13) Flip Saunders got fired after going 206-91 in Detroit, 30-21 in playoff games; meanwhile, also in Detroit, incompetent GM Matt Millen remains employed by the Lions, despite leading the franchise to zero winning seasons (they were 9-7 the year prior to his arrival in Detroit). Go freakin' figure.

      12) Then in the NHL, Tampa Bay fires John Tortorella, a coach who won the Stanley Cup four years ago, season before NHL had a lockout. All of a sudden this guy can't coach? It looks as if the Lightning's new owners want to hire Barry Melrose. But it would be shocking if Tortorella doesn't surface elsewhere.

      11) The Mobil station here is charging $4.16 a gallon for gas; half-mile down the road, Hess station charges $4.06. Someone explain to me why anyone would go to the Mobil station.

      10) This kid Guthrie pitching for the Orioles is pretty good; in his last twelve starts, only twice has he allowed three runs in an inning. Baltimore may have itself an ace there.

      9) Of the top 10 winningest active pitchers in major leagues, only Mike Mussina (189 IP) threw less than 323 innings in the minor leagues. That trend is changing now. Guys are coming up through the minors faster than ever.

      8) Indians scored six runs in CC Sabathia's last four starts; in eight of his twelve starts, they scored two or less runs, so you look at his record, and it is highly misleading.

      7) Konerko was batting .198 when he stepped to plate in 15th inning last night, but homered to give White Sox a 6-4 win, in the last game that finished Wednesday night (12:37am ET)

      6) Padres may be awful, but Greg Maddux is still super, as he held Cubs to three hits in seven IP, as Padres won in eighth on a Hairston homer, snapping Cubs' win streak at nine.

      5) College baseball games are lot longer than big league games, thanks to metal bats and 4,000 foul balls. Fullerton-UCLA game I watched earlier this week seemed to last forever.

      4) I'm now convinced that Michael Vick winds up a Cowboy.

      3) Why can't I get the NFL Network? We can put men on the moon, but I can't get a TV station I'm willing to pay extra for? Its time for the numerous rich people involved in this dispute to sit down and divide the pot of gold and get this settled.

      2) Don't think the NBA does itself a favor by waiting so long to start the Finals; lets get started already.

      1) I'm reading The Broker, a John Grisham book; almost all the characters in the book have same last name as former second basemen in major leagues. It can't be a concidence, too many of them. Pretty good story so far, but the name thing has been distracting. It is kind of funny, I must admit.

Celtics have home court for Finals because they play in weaker half of league; they're 10-1 at home in playoffs, losing Game 2 in last round to Pistons- they're 2-7 on road in playoffs, taking two of three in Detroit in conference finals. Lakers are 12-3 so far in playoffs, 4-3 on road, with losses by 19-5-8ot pts. Kobe Bryant is best player on floor, Jackson has superior record in Finals, which gives Lakers edge in two critical areas. Celtics in Finals for the first time in 21 years.

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics [ABC | 9 PM ET]

Lakers: LA seems to have one distinct advantage in this series, which is head coach Phil Jackson. The 9-time NBA champion is just one title away from passing Celtics legend Red Auerbach for the most championships by a coach, making it very fitting that the Lakers face Boston in the Finals. "Danny Ainge and Kevin McHale, don't you think they collaborated on all this?" Jackson said. "Red's ghost swayed McHale to make the Kevin Garnett trade with Boston last year, rather than with someone else." It's also fitting that he is trying to win title #10 with Kobe Bryant, who has already won three but is trying to capture his first without Shaquille O'Neal. This could very well be the biggest career challenges for both Jackson and Bryant.

Lakers are 12-4-1 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
Lakers are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-0 in LA's last 8 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in LA's last 8 road games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Celtics (-2.5, O/U 192): This historic rivalry revisited means probably more to Boston's Paul Pierce than any other participant after he watched it first-hand as a young child growing up near the Great Western Forum in Inglewood. In fact, Pierce has averaged more points against his hometown team than anybody else in his entire career at 27.9 points per game. "To me, I think that’s what pretty much got me started in basketball, growing up in Los Angeles, watching the Lakers and the Celtics," Pierce said. "And it’s ironic, just being a Celtic, growing up, now you’re playing against the Lakers in The Finals. As a kid, I hated the Celtics. I’m going back home to play against my team that I grew up watching."

Celtics are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Thursday games.
Celtics are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Boston's last 11 Thursday games.

Key Injuries - G Tony Allen (6.6 ppg; Achilles') is doubtful.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                    L.A. Lakers at Boston Celtics (-2 1/2, 192)

If you've been wringing your hands and refreshing your odds board for the last few days, dying for Game 1 between the Lakers and Celtics, just imagine how jacked Kobe Bryant is right now. He's been waiting for this since he was eight.

The L.A. Daily News reported this week that when Bryant was living in Italy as a kid, his grandfather would mail him tapes of the 1987 Celtics-Lakers showdown so he could stay in the loop. He told the News he hated the Celtics then and there's no doubt he'll hate them again at some point in this series.

Of course, the Finals aren't all about Kobe. The Celtics are a group that can beat you a lot of different ways, no matter who's up against them on the other side of the court. LeBron James knows all about that. But it's worth noting that James gave Boston everything it could handle with a weaker supporting staff than the one that Bryant has. Matchups could end up being a major concern for the Celtics, who pride themselves on defense.

Tony Allen likely won't be fit to guard Bryant as he's suffering from an Achilles' tendon issue, while Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom are a handful for any team when they're on their game. And even though home court has ruled this postseason, the Finals may be a different story. Detroit proved the Celtics are beatable in Boston. Maybe Los Angeles can do the same.

                    Pick: Lakers

                      NBA Finals Gameday

A historic rivalry gets renewed on Thursday night when the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics clash in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

This will mark the 11th time that the Lakers and Celtics have met up in the Finals, and the first since 1987. Starting in 1959 the Celtics and Lakers met up in the Finals seven times in 10 seasons, with Boston winning seven championships at the expense of the Lakers. Boston racked up another Finals win versus the Lakers in 1984, before the Lakers finally got some revenge with victories over the Celtics in the Finals in ’85 and ’87.

This year’s matchup picks up where the old rivalry left off, with Bird and Magic replaced by Garnett and Kobe. Both have plenty to prove, as Kevin Garnett will be out to finally win the championship he never came close to achieving while in Minnesota all those years, while Kobe Bryant is out to prove he doesn’t need Shaq at his side to win a championship.

Both Los Angeles and Boston head into the Finals well rested. The Lakers have been off for a week since knocking off the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, while Boston’s last game was a day later when they finished off Detroit in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals.

During the regular season Boston and Los Angeles met up twice with the Celtics easily winning both contests. Way back in November the Celtics defeated the Lakers 107-94 as an 8-point favorite. Bryant led the Lakers with 28 points, while Garnett delivered 21 points and 11 rebounds for Boston.

In the rematch in Los Angeles a month later, the Celtics beat up on the Lakers again in a 110-91 win as a 2-point underdog. Paul Pierce did the most damage for Boston with 33 points, while Bryant dropped in 22 points for the Lakers.

With Game 1 of the Finals taking place at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, the Celtics are a 2.5-point favorite.

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox [NESN | 6:05 PM ET]

Rays: The Rays have won James Shields' last three starts, although he hasn't factored in any of the decisions. Shields has been average in those three outings, giving up nine runs in 21.2 innings of work. He's been much tougher at home than on the road this season. In five road starts, Shields is just 1-2 with a 6.04 ERA. Traveling to Fenway Park may not help Shields get over his road woes. In six career starts versus the Red Sox, Shields is just 1-3 with an ERA of 4.76.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-130, O/U 9 ): Jon Lester is starting to put it all together but he still struggles with his control. Despite sporting a 3.67 ERA this season, Lester has walked 36 batters in 76 innings pitched. Lester is in a bit of a two-game funk since pitching his no-hitter against the Royals. In his last 10 innings pitched, Lester has allowed 14 hits and seven runs. Lester has been tough at home, going 2-1 with a strong 2.72 ERA in six starts at Fenway Park.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves [7:10 PM ET]

Marlins: Ricky Nolasco is on top of his game right now, winning three straight and four of his last five starts. Nolasco had a rough start to the season but has been able to turn things around, allowing just nine runs is his last 29.1 innings pitched. Nolasco has done some of his best work on the road, going 4-1 with a 3.99 ERA in seven starts. Despite the fact that Nolasco has pitched well in his last five outings, four of those games have come in OVER the total.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Braves (-155, O/U 9.5): Teams haven't had much luck when facing Jair Jurrjens at Turner Field this season. In six home starts, Jurrjens is a perfect 4-0 with an impressive 2.06 ERA. Jurrjens has given up three runs or less in 10 of his 12 starts but he's coming off his worst outing of the year against the Reds, where he gave up six walks and six runs in just 4.1 innings of work. The last three games Jurrjens has started have easily soared OVER the total.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Indians at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET]

Indians (-125, O/U 10): This isn't the way C.C. Sabathia and the Indians envisioned the season going. He's just 3-7 with a 4.72 ERA. Sabathia has actually pitched pretty well in his last three outings but has gone 0-2 with one no decision. Over that three-game span, Sabathia has given up seven runs in 22 innings of work. Sabathia could get well against the Rangers, a team he's 7-2 against over his career. Despite Sabathia's poor record, the UNDER has cashed in his last seven starts.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rangers: Kevin Millwood has been inconsistent this year but the high-scoring Rangers have still won four of the last five games he's started. Millwood is perfect at home this season going 3-0 in six starts, although his ERA is a less than imposing 4.65. The OVER has been a moneymaking proposition with Millwood on the mound this year, cashing in six of his last seven starts.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Cubs: There aren't a lot of people who thought Ryan Dempster would be 7-2 with a dazzling 2.75 ERA at this point in the season. Dempster has been of baseball's biggest surprises, contributing to a strong Cubs rotation. Dempster has given up three runs or less in nine of 12 starts this season. While Dempster has been unbeatable at home, he's had bad luck on the road, going 0-2 in four starts despite sporting a 2.08 ERA. Five of Dempster's last six starts have come in UNDER the total.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers (-125, O/U 7.5): The Dodgers have lost Chad Billingsley's last two starts but it's been far from his fault. Billingsley gave up just two runs in 13 innings but came away with a loss and a no decision. The loss was a 3-1 defeat to the Cubs at Wrigley Field, a game where Billingsley allowed just four hits while striking out seven. Don't expect to se a lot of runs scored when Billingsley takes the hill. The UNDER is 6-0 in his last six starts.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                            Cleveland at Texas
Kevin Millwood will look to improve on his perfect home record (3-0, 4.65 ERA) behind the Rangers' high-powered offense and take advantage of Cleveland's 3-4 record as a road favorite between -100 and -125. Texas is the underdog pick (+115) according to Dunkel, which has the Rangers favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Texas (+115). Here are all of today's games.
