Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

      MLB

      Friday, May 30

We will update when projected scores are available.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Tips and Trends
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Dodgers: Rookie sensation Clayton Kershaw lived up to the hype in his first career start against the Cardinals, striking out seven and giving up just two runs over six innings. Kershaw's first start was at Dodger Stadium, so this will be his first test on the road against a Mets offense that's been hot lately.

The UNDER is 8-0 in LA's last 8 games overall.

      Key Injuries - NONE

      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mets (-135, O/U 8): John Maine has been good for the Mets overall this season but he kicks it up a notch at Shea Stadium. In four home starts, Maine is 3-0 with a dazzling 2.28 ERA. Teams are only batting .179 on Maine's home turf, so the Dodgers have their work cut out for them tonight. Maine has lost his two most recent outing giving up eight runs in 10 innings pitched but both of those starts were on the road. The under has been a smart play with Maine on the hill, cashing in eight of his 10 starts this season.

Mets are 2-9 in their last 11 Thursday games.
Mets are 3-8 in their last 11 games following a win.

      Key Injuries - NONE

      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

White Sox: Jose Contreras has been red hot of late with the White Sox winning the last four games he's started. Over that stretch, Contreras has only given up five runs in 28 innings pitched. Contreras has allowed just a single run in half of his starts this season and he's unbeaten in his career versus the Rays, sporting a 5-0 record to go along with an impressive 2.89 ERA. Contreras' last six starts have all gone UNDER the total.

White Sox are 7-1 in their last 8 road games.
White Sox are 8-2 in their last 10 games following a win.
The UNDER is 8-0 in Chicago's last 8 games on field turf.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

      Key Injuries - NONE

      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-145, O/U 7.5): James Shields has been untouchable at home this season where he's 3-1 with a minuscule 1.75 ERA in six starts at Tropicana Field. As tough as he's been at home, Shields has actually struggled in his last two starts giving up nine runs in 15.2 innings of work. Shields owns a respectable 3.38 ERA on the season but he hasn't experienced a lot of success in his career against the White Sox. In two starts versus Chicago, Shields is 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA.

Rays are 17-4 in their last 21 games on field turf.
Rays are 21-7 in their last 28 home games.

      Key Injuries - NONE

      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 PM ET]

Blue Jays: Dustin McGowan has a solid 3.93 ERA on the season but he's really struggled away from home. McGowan is 0-3 with a 5.91 ERA in six road starts. But even when McGowan is off, the games he starts tend to be low scoring. Eight of his 10 starts have gone UNDER, with six of those games totaling five runs or less. McGowan faced the A's twice last season, going 1-0 with an ERA of 4.42.

      Key Injuries - NONE

      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Angels (-125, O/U 8): After a miserable start to the season, Jered Weaver has bounced back strong in his last three outings, going 2-0 over that span. In his last 20.1 innings on the mound, Weaver has struck out 19 while allowing just two runs. Weaver is a perfect 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA against Toronto in his career. Despite just a 2-2 record, Weaver has been extremely tough at home with an ERA of 2.23 and 0.99 WHIP. The UNDER is 4-1 in Weaver's five starts at home this season.

      Key Injuries - NONE

      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

        SCOREBOARD

        Friday, May 30

Oakland at Texas (8:05 p.m. EDT). Justin Duchscherer gave up only one hit in eight innings in his last start for Oakland. The Rangers' Kevin Millwood makes his first start since going on the disabled list May 11.

        STARS

        Thursday

-Randy Winn, Giants, homered twice, including a solo shot leading off the ninth inning that gave San Francisco a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

-Phil Dumatrait, Pirates, gave up two hits and two walks in seven innings without yielding an earned run, and struck out nine in a 7-2 victory over the Reds.

-Paul Konerko, White Sox, went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in a 5-1 victory over the Rays.

-Jody Gerut, Padres, hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning to help San Diego beat the Nationals 5-2.

-Rod Barajas, Blue Jays, had three doubles in four at-bats, driving in three runs and scoring twice more in a 12-0 rout of the Athletics.

-Mark Teixeira, Braves, homered and drove in four runs in an 8-1 romp over the Brewers.

-Kevin Slowey, Twins, gave up six hits and one run in a complete-game, 5-1 victory over the Royals. He also struck out six without issuing a walk.

        SPOILED HOMECOMING

The Mets spoiled Los Angeles manager Joe Torre's return to New York, handing the slumping Dodgers their third straight loss, 8-4. It was Torre's first game in the city since parting ways with the Yankees last October. Many fans in the crowd of 52,886 at Shea Stadium stood and cheered when he made a pitching change in the seventh inning, and Torre waved and doffed his cap while walking back to the dugout.

        CATCHING CLEMENS

The Diamondbacks' Randy Johnson tied Roger Clemens for second place on baseball's career strikeout list, fanning nine batters in seven innings against the Giants, the last one drawing a big ovation. He has 4,672 strikeouts in 20 major league seasons. Nolan Ryan holds the major league record for most career strikeouts with 5,714.

        FLYING HIGH

The Blue Jays' Jesse Litsch won his fifth straight decision and ran his scoreless innings streak to 16 in a 12-0 rout of the Athletics. Litsch's gem and Toronto's most productive game of the year also gave manager John Gibbons his 300th managerial victory.

        PAYBACK

Phil Dumatrait got sweet redemption against the team that put him on waivers, giving up one unearned run and two hits in seven innings of a 7-2 victory over the Reds. The Pirates snapped Cincinnati's nine-game home winning streak. Dumatrait was 0-4 in six starts for the Reds last season with a 15.00 ERA. He's 2-1 in six starts for the Pirates.

        BERKMAN'S HOT MAY

The Astros' Lance Berkman hit his 17th homer leading off the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals. He also doubled in four at-bats and is hitting .474 in May (46-for-97) with nine homers and 22 RBIs.

        REELING ROYALS

Kevin Slowey pitched a six-hitter and the Twins beat the Royals 5-1, handing Kansas City its 11th straight loss. The skid is the longest in the majors this year and the Royals' worst since a 13-game skid May 12-25, 2006.

        SPEAKING

"It was a good come-from-behind win. They're playing with confidence. If we get down we have that feeling we can come from behind and win a baseball game. It's a good feeling.'' -Cubs manager Lou Piniella, whose team sits alone with the best record in the major leagues after an 8-4 victory over the Rockies.

        SEASONS

        May 30

1927 - In the fourth inning of a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, shortstop Jim Cooney of the Chicago Cubs caught Paul Waner's liner, stepped on second to double Lloyd Waner and then tagged Clyde Barnhart coming from first for an unassisted triple play.

1935 - Babe Ruth made his last major league appearance. He played one inning for the Boston Braves against the Philadelphia Phillies. Jim Bivin retired Babe Ruth on an infield grounder in the Babe's final major league at-bat.

1940 - Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants threw 87 pitches in a 7-0 one-hitter against the Brooklyn Dodgers. He faced the minimum 27 batters. Johnny Hudson, who singled, was caught stealing.

1956 - Mickey Mantle hit a home run which came within a foot-and-a-half of leaving Yankee Stadium. It hit the face of the upper deck in right field, 370 feet from home plate and 117 feet in the air. Mantle became the first player to hit 20 home runs by the end of May as the Yankees beat the Washington Senators 4-3.

1961 - Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Bill Skowron each hit two homers to lead the New York Yankees to a 12-3 rout of the Boston Red Sox. Yogi Berra also added a homer.

1987 - Eric Davis hit a grand slam in the third inning, breaking two National League records and leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Davis became the first NL player to hit three grand slams in a month and his major league leading 19 homers broke the NL record for most homers in April and May.

2003 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit a game-tying home run in the ninth and a go-ahead homer in the top of the 11th to lead Cincinnati over Florida 4-3.

2006 - Vernon Wells hit three home runs and Troy Glaus added two more in Toronto's 8-5 victory over Boston.

          NBA

          Friday, May 30

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Friday's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Boston at Detroit (-5 1/2, 175)

Can the Celtics steal one in Detroit to complete on half of the NBA's dream Final? Well, just maybe if Kendrick Perkins keeps rolling.

As if the Pistons didn't have enough problems dealing with Kevin Garnett, but they had their hands full with the 6-foot-10, 280-pound Perkins now too. He notched a career playoff highs with 18 points and 16 rebounds in Game 5's 106-102 win.

But while Boston is finally getting some secondary scoring to back up its Big Three, Detroit may have to deal with an injury concern with its top scorer in the series. Richard Hamilton hurt his elbow late in Game 5 when he got caught up with Ray Allen near the bucket, and while X-rays were negative Hamilton's status for Friday's game is uncertain is of now.

"It's sore right now," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said of Hamilton's elbow. "We're going to have to wait and see how it is tomorrow, wait and see how it is in 48 hours. He was great again tonight. Hopefully he's going to be ready to go for us."

And how. Hamilton was huge in bringing the Pistons back from 17 points down, scoring seven points in the third quarter and adding nine more in the fourth. Detroit has depth in the backcourt, but needs Hamilton to take the reins in situations like that, and with the season on the line Friday.

          Pick: Celtics

                    Washington at Arizona (-180, 9)

If you're going to play a big underdog, this might be your chance. Nobody seems to know what's wrong with the D-Backs but there is definitely something wrong. They've eight of their last 10 games, including a sweep to the Giants in their own ballpark. Arizona was favored in all but one of those losses.

Hitting has been the biggest problem for this club. Over the last 10 games, they've posted a .217 average (.180 against right-handers). It's not all that surprising, however, that this club would run into a hitting slump. They have three of the five hitters with the most strikeouts in the National League on their roster.

Washington starter Tim Redding doesn't have a good history against Arizona (6.30, 0-5) but with six wins this year, he has been the Nats' best pitcher and they've won in eight of his 12 starts, which is all the more impressive on a team with a 23-32 record.

                    Pick: Nationals

Cleveland at Kansas City (+125, 8)

Cliff Lee has come down to earth a little bit since his incredible start to the season, but even after allowing seven earned runs in his last two starts, there's great value on the Indians with Lee on the mound. They've won in seven of his nine starts, including his last one in which he held off a very tough Texas lineup to seven hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings.

Kansas City won't put up nearly as much of a fight. The club is in the midst of a major crisis, not just because it's lost 11 consecutive games, but also because dissention has started to infiltrate the clubhouse. Jose Guillen went to the media to criticize his teammates after Wednesday's loss and called them "babies". This isn't a team that will thrive under those circumstances.

Cleveland hasn't exactly been hot lately either and they've been struggling to get hits all season, but they won't have to do much at the plate with Lee toeing the rubber.

                    Pick: Indians

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Dodgers: Rookie sensation Clayton Kershaw lived up to the hype in his first career start against the Cardinals, striking out seven and giving up just two runs over six innings. Kershaw's first start was at Dodger Stadium, so this will be his first test on the road against a Mets offense that's been hot lately.

The UNDER is 8-0 in LA's last 8 games overall.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mets (-145, O/U 8): John Maine has been good for the Mets overall this season but he kicks it up a notch at Shea Stadium.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 2

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 PM ET]

Blue Jays: Dustin McGowan has a solid 3.93 ERA on the season but he's really struggled away from home. McGowan is 0-3 with a 5.91 ERA in six road starts. But even when McGowan is off, the games he starts tend to be low scoring. Eight of his 10 starts have gone UNDER, with six of those games totaling five runs or less. McGowan faced the A's twice last season, going 1-0 with an ERA of 4.42.

Blue Jays are 7-1 in their last 8 games overall.
Blue Jays are 8-2 in their last 10 road games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 2 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Angels (-120, O/U 7.5): After a miserable start to the season, Jered Weaver has bounced back strong in his last three outings, going 2-0 over that span.

The UNDER is 22-6 in LA's last 28 games overall.
The UNDER is 16-5-1 in LA's last 22 home games.

Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons [ESPN | 8:30 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston used a dominating 42-25 rebounding advantage again to win Game 5, and it also helped that the team got its best offensive production from the "Big Three" in the entire playoffs so far. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined for 78 points on 25-of-43 shooting from the field (58 percent). The rest of the Celtics made just 12-of-30 shots (40 percent). Pierce had challenged his teammates about this rare opportunity to play in the NBA Finals beforehand, and the stars certainly stepped up. "It has to come from all of us, but definitely your All-Stars have to step up, meaning me, Kevin (Garnett), and Ray (Allen)," Pierce said. "We have to play better basketball, but it's a combination of all of us, from one all the way down to 12. There is definitely a lot of pressure, but, hey, we're more than capable."

Road team is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
Celtics are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Celtics are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 road games.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 85

Pistons (-6, O/U 175.5): As mentioned earlier, Detroit was dominated on the boards, but this definitely isn't the first time. In fact, the Pistons were outrebounded in all three regular-season meetings and have not had the edge in any game in the Eastern Conference Finals either. "Defensively, we've done some things with extending our defense and tilting our defense, so we were leaving some people on the weak side of rebounds (free)," Detroit head coach Flip Saunders said. "That opened up some rebound opportunities for Boston." Still, the Pistons have found ways to beat the Celtics twice and can force a Game 7 with another home win. "We're going to come out and we're going to fight and we're going to scratch and we're going to claw and do the things that we've been known to do and try to get back here for Game 7," Detroit's Chauncey Billups said.

Pistons are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 home games.
Pistons are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Atlantic Division.
The UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Richard Hamilton (17.3 ppg; elbow) is questionable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 90
