    Weekend Sports Preview

The NBA and NHL playoffs continue to dominate the sports scene this weekend, while MLB, AFL, WNBA and NASCAR also fight for some attention.

In the NBA on Friday night, the Boston Celtics could move on to the NBA Finals with a win over the Detroit Pistons. If the Pistons can survive on Friday night then Game 7 will be played in Boston on Sunday.

After two days off, the Stanley Cup final resumes on Saturday night with Game 4 between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Detroit holds a 2-1 series leads after Pittsburgh struck back with a 3-2 win in Game 3 on Wednesday night.

On the diamond this weekend two division leaders square off in the American League when the White Sox visit Tampa Bay. There are also a few divisional matchups on tap in the AL, as Boston takes on Baltimore, Oakland travels to Texas and Cleveland faces Kansas City. The rest of the AL weekend schedule includes the Yankees at Minnesota, Toronto at the Angels and Detroit at Seattle.

In the National League this weekend the first-place Florida Marlins try to hold off the surging Phillies when they clash in Philadelphia. The other NL divisional matchups on the schedule include Houston at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at St. Louis and San Diego at San Francisco. Rounding out the NL weekend matchups are Colorado at the Cubs, the Dodgers at Mets, Atlanta at Cincinnati and Washington at Arizona.

Week 14 in the AFL kicks off on Friday night with Columbus at New Orleans (-7.5). Five more games follow on Saturday, including Tampa Bay at Georgia (-4.5), Dallas at Cleveland (+3), Arizona at Orlando (-10), Kansas City at Chicago (-16) and San Jose at Los Angeles (+7). This week’s lone Sunday game sees Utah travel to Grand Rapids (-3).

The new WNBA season continues on Friday night with three games on the schedule, including New York at Connecticut, San Antonio at Seattle and Houston at Sacramento. There’s another three-pack of games on Saturday with Los Angeles at Washington, Detroit at Indiana and Phoenix at Minnesota. On Sunday two games tip off the start of June, as Connecticut takes on Chicago and Houston battles Seattle.

Finally, the drivers of NASCAR drive into Dover International Speedway on Sunday for the Best Buy 400. Martin Truex Jr. recorded his only win of the season in this race last year, but the favorites will be points leader Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Spurs lost to Lakers in five games, but had 17-point leads in two of their three losses at Staples. Have a nice summer.

-- White Sox won 5-1 at the Trop Thursday, in battle of first place teams; Danks tossed six strong frames for Pale Hose.

-- Randy Johnson left game with 3-2 lead after seven, as he went for 300th win, but bullpen blew save, before Winn hit his second homer of game in 9th to give Giants a 4-3 win.

-- Harang got whacked for six runs in four IP four days after his nine-strikeout, four-inning relief stint Sunday.

-- Royals have now lost 11 games in row; batting Gathright in the #2 hole ain't going to help end the skid anytime soon.

-- Underrated record: Nolan Ryan struck out 1,042 more guys than any other pitcher in the history of baseball. Wow

Friday's List of 13: Runnin' bases in American League......

Orioles-- 16-8 at home, 10-18 on road; when your skipper has managed 2,600+ minor league games, he gives team an edge.

Red Sox-- Have to be concerned about 11-19 road record and Matsuzaka's shoulder, and not in that order.

White Sox-- Went 4-2 last week when they scored total of just 18 runs in six games; thats how good their pitching has been. Carlos Quentin is putting up MVP-type numbers.

Indians-- Hitting .234 as team, 13 points lower than any other AL team; they're 14th in OB%, T13 in runs scored. Hafner has a bad shoulder, and thats something to worry about.

Detroit-- Sheffield is back on DL;old team continues to show that age; they're 3rd in AL in runs scored, last in stolen bases. That said, division lead is well within their reach.

Kansas City-- Had 8-3 lead in ninth Wednesday, blew that one then lost again Thursday, and slipped back into last place. Yuk Scored 24 less runs than any other team in league.

LA Angels-- 13th in AL in walks, 9th in runs scored; getting ace Lackey back has been huge help, because bullpen was getting whacked around pretty good. Should jog in AL West.

Minnesota-- Joe Mauer is hitting .324, great for a catcher, but he hasn't homered in 199 plate appearances, a little alarming.

Bronx-- Played better in last week; if Chamberlain is effective starter, they'll be formidable in second half, but then who gets the ball in 8th inning of close games?

Oakland-- Eric Chavex is finally back, going 0-4 as DH, taking place of injured Thomas, who is on DL. After three surgeries in offseason, Chavez must be glad just to be playing.

Seattle-- How can a team with Ichiro be last in league in OB%? Mariners' .307 on-base percentage is dismal. Then again, so is their xx-xx record, last in AL West.

Tampa Bay-- Wheeler/Reyes have to fill in at closer while Troy Percival is on DL; nice of Sports Illustrated to put them on the cover, but how about a real picture instead of a cartoon?

Texas-- Milton Bradley leads AL with .435 OB%; he's hitting a productive .297, with eight homers, 31 RBI, but only 15 of last 36 starting pitchers finished the sixth inning.

Toronto-- Gaining steam behind impressive starting pitching; funny thing is they started playing better once their best guy, Vernon Wells, broke his wrist diving for ball in centerfield.

                        NBA Games

Celtics' win in Game 5 was first series game to go over total, as both teams made more than half their 3's. Health of Hamilton's elbow an issue here; he got hurt late in Game 5. Pistons taking average of 29.8 FT/game in series- they got burned by Perkins' big game Wednesday. Boston is 1-7 on road in playoffs; but a win here sends them to Finals vs Lakers, the NBA's dream.

Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons [ESPN | 8:30 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston used a dominating 42-25 rebounding advantage again to win Game 5, and it also helped that the team got its best offensive production from the "Big Three" in the entire playoffs so far. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined for 78 points on 25-of-43 shooting from the field (58 percent). The rest of the Celtics made just 12-of-30 shots (40 percent). Pierce had challenged his teammates about this rare opportunity to play in the NBA Finals beforehand, and the stars certainly stepped up. “It has to come from all of us, but definitely your All-Stars have to step up, meaning me, Kevin (Garnett), and Ray (Allen),” Pierce said. “We have to play better basketball, but it’s a combination of all of us, from one all the way down to 12. There is definitely a lot of pressure, but, hey, we’re more than capable.”

Road team is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
Celtics are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Celtics are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 road games.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pistons (-6, O/U 175.5): As mentioned earlier, Detroit was dominated on the boards, but this definitely isn't the first time. In fact, the Pistons were outrebounded in all three regular-season meetings and have not had the edge in any game in the Eastern Conference Finals either. “Defensively, we’ve done some things with extending our defense and tilting our defense, so we were leaving some people on the weak side of rebounds (free),” Detroit head coach Flip Saunders said. “That opened up some rebound opportunities for Boston.” Still, the Pistons have found ways to beat the Celtics twice and can force a Game 7 with another home win. “We’re going to come out and we’re going to fight and we’re going to scratch and we’re going to claw and do the things that we’ve been known to do and try to get back here for Game 7,” Detroit's Chauncey Billups said.

Pistons are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 home games.
Pistons are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Atlantic Division.
The UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Richard Hamilton (17.3 ppg; elbow) is questionable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD
