Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts on Memorial Day

    13) We'll have a complete wrapup of the Gym Rat tonight; had to get little sleep after watching ton of hoop last couple days. We'll say here that Brooklyn Ballers won the 17/under title, as they beat a gritty Philadelphia Raiders team in finals, after the Raiders had KO'd top seed Jersey ShoreShots in semis.

    12) Had to see the Philly team to believe how spunky they are, as they only had seven guys, and because a 16/under game on back court at Siena went double OT, they had no downtime in between any of their final three games. Raiders were down 10 at half of semifinal game, but came back to win despite several of their players cramping up. One of their subs was sitting on sidelines eating a banana, trying to get potassium into him.

    11) Shoreshots' coach didn't help himself by trying to use his subs to rest his starters for finals, but then subs couldn't hold on to the lead, and they went hope earlier than they hoped.

Anyway, we'll have lot of Gym Rat stuff for Tuesday's Den.

    10) Its Memorial Day, and Tampa Bay is in first place; they've won 15 of their last 16 home games. Wow.

    9) Arizona's young star Justin Upton is 0-20 with 14 whiffs on the Snakes' current road trip.

    8) A's are now 15-2 when their leadoff hitter scores a run.

    7) When Chris Young got hit in face with a line drive last week, not only did he break his nose, he fractured other parts of his face, including a small fracture on part of his skull. He's going to be out of action for a long time.

    6) Victor Zambrano, once traded straight-up for Scott Kazmir, is 0-6, 9.71 in AAA with Colorado Springs.

    5) Seth Smith hit his first big league homer Sunday for Rockies; he was Eli Manning's backup at Ole Miss, though he never got into a game for the Rebels.

    4) Five of the Rockies' six best players are on the DL.

    3) That said, Mets lost two of three in Denver, and today is the day Willie Randolph meets with Met ownership. He's lucky if he still has a job, because he hasn't done very well.

    2) I don't know much about car racing, but I'm guessing there are some unhappy people when a car runs for 600 miles, is near top of leaderboard and then runs out of gas on last few laps.

    1) Someone explain to me how this horse Big Brown can run in the Belmont Stakes with a small crack in his front left hoof.

That Zambrano/Kazmir trade may go down as one of baseball's great fleece jobs
