Hey Pittsburgh, welcome to the NHL Stanley Cup final.

The Penguins were worked over in Game 1 and now can only hope that the 4-0 spanking was what they needed to get back on track. But you see this kind of final a lot in sports - the upstart youngsters against seasoned veterans and most times young teams need to lose before they learn how to win.

Not only are the Red Wings a better team from top to bottom, but they do know what it's like to be just a handful of wins away from a Cup - Pittsburgh doesn't. Expect Michel Therrien to put Gary Roberts back in the lineup to stir things up a bit for Game 2, which will give the team a boost.

However, it may not make much difference. The Penguins need early goals to keep their heads above water in this series and they will be competitive if they keep their composure, but betting against Detroit at home is a hard sell.

Why New York isn't favored by more here, beats us.

The Yankees are on a five-game winning streak while the O's are on a five-game losing streak. The Yankees' Darrell Rasner is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA compared to Garrett Olson's 5.19 ERA and 3-2 team win/loss record. Rasner and the Yankees just beat Olson and the O's last week, 8-0 in New York.

The O's have also been so bad, manager Dave Trembley held a team meeting before Saturday's game against the Rays and talked to his club about scoring more runs. He also benched second baseman Brian Roberts, right fielder Nick Markakis and catcher Ramon Hernandez.

It didn't help.

We guess oddsmakers are thinking the O's might get a spark from an afternoon Memorial Day crowd here, but we don't see it.

Detroit vs. Angels (-130, 9 1/2)

The Tigers are one of the hottest hitting clubs in the majors right now with a .299 batting average during their last 10 games. They're hitting .293 against righties over that span with Jon Garland taking the hill tonight in L.A.

Their last six games have been the most impressive at the plate where they've driven in an average of nine runs per game. Not surprisingly, the over paid off in five of those six outings and Detroit went a respectable 4-2.

The added runs should help Kenny Rogers out today, who has struggled on the mound to a 4-4 record with a Satanic 6.66 ERA. It should be noted, however, that scoring hasn't come easily against an Angels squad that has seen the under pay in nine of its last 10 outings.

Red Wings held Pittsburgh to seven shots on goal over final two periods, killing five penalties (8:11 total) in 4-0 Game 1 win. Game was 1-0 after two periods, then Wings broke game open in third; they wore Pens down, outshooting them 16-4 in period #2, then scoring three times on just nine shots in final stanza. First time in playoffs Pittsburgh has been behind in a series.
