    Six-pack for Saturday

-- Justin Duchscherer allowed one hit eight innings as A's blanked Boston, 3-0.

-- Boston's loss ties them for first place with Rays; Tampa's success is an outstanding story, and for first time maybe, the fans noticed Saturday-- 30,445 were on hand.

-- Nick Evans went 3-4 with three doubles in his major league debut as Mets hammered Colorado 9-2; Coors Field is best place ever to start your big league career, no?

-- Toronto pitchers hgave consecutive complete-game wins by the pitchers, as they start to string together some wins.

      Indianapolis 500 Preview

Open wheel racing will try to steal some of the thunder from NASCAR on Sunday, as the most important race of the IRL season, the Indianapolis 500, is set to go at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Dario Franchitti won the rain-shortened Indy 500 last year, but the Scotsman won't be back at the Brickyard this weekend after moving to the NASCAR circuit.

The favorite to capture the checkered flag at Indy on Sunday is another former winner, Dan Wheldon, at 3/1. Wheldon won the 2005 Indy 500, and he is coming off a victory in the RoadRunner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway last month.

Following Wheldon on the odds list are Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon, both at 4/1. Castroneves is a two-time Indy 500 champion, having won back-to-back in 2001 and 2002. Castroneves hasn't recorded a victory on the IRL circuit this season, but he has been consistently among the race leaders with two second-place and two fourth-place finishes to sit atop the driver standings.

Dixon will start on the pole Sunday as he attempts to record his first Indy 500 win. Dixon's best career finish at Indy came last year when he ended up second behind Franchitti. Sixteen racers have won the Indy 500 after starting from the pole position, with the last driver to accomplish the feat being Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.

Of course the driver that will likely receive the most attention at Indy this weekend is Danica Patrick. Patrick finally won her first IRL race earlier this season in Japan, and she'll make her fourth attempt at becoming the first woman to win the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. Two other female drivers also join Patrick in the Indy 500 field, Sarah Fisher and Milka Duno.

      Odds to Win Indianapolis 500

      Dan Wheldon 3/1
      Helio Castroneves 4/1

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees [TBS | 1:05 PM ET]

Mariners: Jarrod Washburn has been atrocious in 2008. He's 2-6 with a ridiculous 6.99 ERA, and the Mariners have lost seven of Washburn's nine starts this year. Things continue to head south for Washburn, as he's coming off his worst performance of the year against Detroit. Washburn was blasted for 12 hits and nine runs in just 2.1 innings of work. Not surprisingly, the last five games that Washburn has taken the rubber have all gone OVER.

Mariners are 7-21 in their last 28 road games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Yankees (-240, O/U 9.5): The Yankees won the first seven games ace Chien-Ming Wang started but have dropped the last three. Wang is 0-2 with a no decision in his last three starts, giving up 11 runs over 21.2 innings pitched. Although he's coming off one of his worst outings of the year, Wang has to be happy to see the Mariners in town. Wang is a perfect 7-0 against Seattle in his career to go along with a 2.39 ERA. The UNDER has dominated in games with Wang in the mound, cashing in seven of his 10 starts this season.

Yankees are 20-7 in their last 27 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates [WGN | 1:35 PM ET]

Cubs (-145, O/U 9): Ted Lilly is red hot of late, winning four consecutive starts and five of his last six. Lilly has given up a respectable 13 runs in his last 37.1 innings on the mound. Lilly has pitched better at home than on the road where he's 2-2 with an ERA of 5.81. Lilly hasn't been great against the Pirates over his career, sporting a 5.26 ERA and1.68 WHIP in four career starts.

Cubs are 23-10 in their last 33 games as a favorite.
Cubs are 13-4 in the last 17 meetings.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Pirates: Paul Maholm has been a major disappointment for the Pirates so far this season. Maholm has lost three of his last four starts, giving up 19 runs in just 23.1 innings pitched over that span. In spite all of Maholm's problems this season seven of the nine games he has started have gone under the total. One bright spot for the Pirates is Maholm has been much better at home, going 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA.

Pirates are 7-1 in Maholm's last 8 home starts.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Angels: John Lackey came of the DL a couple of weeks ago and didn't miss a beat. In two starts since his return, Lackey has only allowed two runs in 14 innings pitched, giving him an impressive 1.29 ERA on the year. Thanks to Lackey's two impressive performances, both games he started have gone under the total. Lackey faced the White Sox once last season, taking the loss after giving up four runs in eight innings of work.

Angels are 10-4 in their last 14 games on grass.
Angels are 12-5 in the last 17 meetings.
The OVER is 6-2 in LA's last 8 Sunday games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

White Sox (-115, O/U 8.5): Jose Contreras is finally becoming the dominant pitcher many thought he would be when he defected from Cuba. Contreras has won four of his last five starts and has only allowed one run in all four of those victories. As a matter of fact, Contreras has given up a single run in five of his nine starts this season. The UNDER has cashed in five straight games Contreras has started and seven of nine overall.

White Sox are 8-2 in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-2 in Chicago's last 11 games on grass.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Sunday night baseball: Angels at White Sox

Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox
Starting pitchers: John Lackey vs. Jose Contreras
              Line: pick , O/U 8.5

ESPN may not have expected a battle of division leaders when they scheduled this Sunday Night Baseball contest. But that sure is what they’re getting. Many anticipated the visiting Angels would be sitting atop the AL West but few would have guessed the White Sox would be occupying that same spot in the AL Central.

Chicago has jumped to the front of the surprisingly disappointing Central Division behind solid pitching, a taste for the longball and the eight-game winning streak it brought into this series. The White Sox are second in the American League with a 3.46 ERA, trailing only the Oakland A’s. Four of their five starters own ERAs under 4.00, including Jose Contreras’ 3.17 mark.

Contreras has bounced back from a down 2007 campaign to regain the form that earned him a spot on the 2006 All-Star team. He is 5-3 with a nifty 1.14 WHIP and has allowed just three earned runs over his last three starts, a run that stretches 20 innings. Contreras has shown a bit of inconsistency, though. Of his nine starts this year, he has allowed exactly one earned run in five of those outings. In the other four starts, he has allowed exactly four earned runs. Which Contreras will show up?

The White Sox are far from the best hitting team in baseball, hitting at a .248 team clip, good for 26th in all of baseball. Most of their production has come courtesy of the home run. Chicago has deposited 57 pitches into the stands, good for the fourth most in baseball. Outfielder Carlos Quentin has been the biggest surprise, using his first full-time gig to post an AL-high 12 home runs.

Angels starter John Lackey could combine with Contreras to make this contest a pitcher’s duel. Lackey has returned from a strained triceps as though nothing every happened, picking up exactly where he left off. He has made two starts and gone seven innings in each while allowing just one earned run in both outings.

Los Angeles has built a 2.5-game lead in the West Division despite being in the middle of the pack of nearly every offensive category. The Angels are 11th with a .262 team batting average, 16th with 4.5 runs per game and 16th with 43 home runs. Injuries have limited both Chone Figgins and Howie Kendrick and the rest of the lineup has been unable to pick up the slack.

Mediocre offenses from both Los Angeles and Chicago have combined with solid pitching on both sides to produce a bevy of ‘unders’. The under is 27-18-4 in LA’s 49 games and 27-19 in Chicago’s 46 games. These two teams met in Los Angeles for a 4-game set earlier this year with three of those four games staying under the total and averaging 5.3 total runs per game.

Lackey and Contreras met earlier this year in Lackey’s return from the disabled list. They went toe-to-toe through seven innings with each hurler allowing just one earned run. The difference in that meeting was the bullpen. The White Sox scored five runs in two innings off of the Angels’ pen, giving them the 6-1 win.

Will the Angels and Sox engage in another low-scoring affair? Will they combine to light up the scoreboard? Will one team embarrass the other in front of a national audience? The only way to find out is to tune in.

Lakers are 10-2 in playoffs, 4-2 on the road, winning first two games of this series by 4-30 pts. San Antonio had a 65-45 lead Wednesday in third quarter of Game 1, lost game-- then went out and got crushed by 30 in unwatchable Game 2. Home team won all six series meetings this season, with Lakers losing both visits to Alamo. LA is in such a short series, you blow a 20-pt lead when you have chance to seize home court edge, it is not easy to bounce back from. Gut check for Spurs in Game 3.

Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs [TNT | 8:30 PM ET]

Lakers: LA head coach Phil Jackson is very aware that his team is still playing the defending NBA champions, who just overcame an 0-2 deficit to beat the Hornets in the second round to advance to the Western Conference Finals. “We still have a championship club we have to go through in that situation,” Jackson said. “They have really played well on their home floor since it was built. You can’t compare the noise with Utah, but it gets pretty loud. They’re going to be very precise in what they do. They’re going to come out and play with purpose.”

Lakers are 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
The OVER is 7-3 in LA's last 10 Sunday games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 94

Spurs (-5, O/U 192): San Antonio is a perfect 6-0 so far at home in the playoffs, winning by an average of 10.5 points. However, there is some cause for concern with the Spurs, who have not gotten much balance in this series with Lakers and need that to change in order to bounce back with a victory. “I think the common denominator, bottom line, really isn’t about Xs and Os,” San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich said. “We have to have more people playing better.” Tim Duncan and Tony Parker were the only Spurs to score in double figures in Game 3, and Manu Ginobili has only 17 points on 5-of-21 shooting through the first two games combined.

Spurs are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings in San Antonio.

Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio (-5, 192)

Is this just a case of d?j? vu or have the San Antonio Spurs been here before?

It was only a few weeks ago when the Spurs flew home from New Orleans down 2-0 to the Hornets and they were all but written off by every basketball pundit on the planet. They were called old, sluggish, slow, disjointed - but what happened when they returned to the comforts of the AT&T Center? Back-to-back wins.

But that was the young and inexperienced Hornets and this is the Lakers, doubters might argue. Yet who aside from Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher, on the Lakers roster has any significant playoff experience? Los Angeles has been getting big contributions in this series from guys like Sasha Vujacic and Jordan Farmar, but these are exactly the guys who could be rattled on the road.

Just look at what happened in Salt Lake City in the last round. The Lakers were coming off a pair of easy home wins, but when they had to travel to Utah and face a team that, like the Spurs, had an impressive record at home, they choked. They gave up 18 turnovers and even Bryant, who normally has ice in his veins, went 0-for-6 from beyond the arc. You can bet the Spurs are going use the same tactic and crank up the defensive pressure to test this young team's resolve.

The Spurs have a 25-18-3 ATS record in San Antonio this year and they've gone 3-1-1 in their own building through these playoffs.

                          Pick: Spurs
