        Tuesday Playoff NHL Gameday

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers, 7:30pm ET

The Penguins rolled through the first two rounds of the NHL playoffs, and so far it hasn't looked like the Flyers are going to be able to prevent them from reaching the Stanley Cup final. Pittsburgh opened their third-round set with their state rival with a 4-2 win last Friday night, and they expanded their series lead to 2-0 with another 4-2 victory on Sunday. Sidney Crosby, Marian Hossa, Maxime Talbot, and Jordan Staal (into an empty net) scored for the Pens in Game 2, while Jeff Carter and Mike Richards replied for the Flyers. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 30 of 32 Philadelphia shots in the victory, and Flyers counterpart Martin Biron managed to block 34 of the 37 shots on net by the Pens.

The oddsmakers think the Flyers have a chance to get back into this series on Tuesday night - they were opened as -130 home favorites. The total was opened as 5.5. goals.

Pick 'n' Roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Orlando at Detroit (-6 1/2, 185 1/2)

Jameer Nelson is either courageous or stupid - we'll find out which it is on Tuesday. Following a tough 90-89 loss that put Orlando down 3-1 in the series, Nelson guaranteed a Game 5 win.

"You know what, we're going to make some adjustments and we're going to win this game," Nelson told reporters after the Game 4 loss. "I'm not trying to be arrogant or cocky or anything like that. We're going to win this game in Detroit."

As if that weren't enough, the point guard also promised he would make his free throws after going 2-for-6 from the line in the Game 4 loss. As far as the Magic were concerned, it was the second game of the series that could have gone either way.

It's easy to read too much into post-game guarantees like this, but the Pistons aren't the kind of team you want to provoke with bulletin board material - especially on their own floor.

          Pick: Detroit

San Antonio at New Orleans (-3, 186 1/2)

Until one of these teams breaks serve in enemy territory, it probably makes sense to keep riding the home team. But a healthy Tim Duncan makes a big difference.

Duncan played through a nasty flu bug during the first two games of the series and struggled against New Orleans' double teams. Now he looks fit to take charge when he needs to after dropping 22 points, grabbing 15 boards and swatting four shots in Game 4's win.

Possibly more importantly – the Spurs defense finally showed up in San Antonio. Chris Paul scored 23 points, but Jannero Pargo was second on the score sheet with only 11 points. That could spell trouble for New Orleans.

          Pick: San Antonio

            Pittsburgh at Philadelphia (+110, 5 1/2)

The Philadelphia Flyers obviously haven't learned much from the New York Rangers' demise. New York couldn't keep itself out of the penalty box against the Penguins and ultimately couldn't do anything to slow down Pittsburgh's deadly powerplay. Now the Flyers are falling into the same trap.

Philadelphia has lots of speed up front, but its defense - specifically Derian Hatcher - can't keep up when the Penguins start wheeling around and cycling the puck deep. That leads to lazy obstruction penalties. Philly took 10 penalties in Game 2, a pair of which resulted in Pittsburgh goals, after staying fairly disciplined in the first game of the series.

The Flyers are in huge trouble if they start a parade to the penalty box again once they get back in front of their home crowd, though something tells us Philly coach John Stevens has already told them all about that. They can hang in there at even strength and it's now or never for the Flyers.

            Pick: Philadelphia

                        Oakland at Cleveland (-114, 9)

Oakland may have the most successful pitching staff in the majors right now, but after watching Cleveland's hurlers in yesterday's doubleheader against Toronto, the Indians proved they have a pretty descent staff of their own.

They split the doubleheader with the Blue Jays, but Fausto Carmona and Cliff Lee became the first pitchers to throw nine scoreless innings in both ends of a doubleheader since 1977. That means the entire bullpen is available to assist Paul Byrd today as he takes the mound with a streak of five straight starts that have played under the total.

The A's will send Justin Duchscherer to the mound. He's got a 2.45 ERA and the rookie has been allowed to go deeper into games with each start. In a 4-2 win over the Orioles in his last start, he went seven innings and threw 85 pitches, further evidence that Bob Geren is gaining confidence in the young right-hander. But even if he gets the hook, the A's are confident their bullpen (2.78 ERA), can get the job done.

                        Pick: Under

Los Angeles Dodgers at Milwaukee (-120, 8 1/2)

Ever since Rafael Furcal, who is third in the majors with a .366 batting average, was forced out of the Dodgers lineup with a back injury, the club has been hopeless at the plate. The shortstop hasn't played since May 5 and he was placed on the 15-day DL yesterday after it was discovered the injury was worse than originally thought. In five games without Furcal, the Dodgers are 1-4 and have produced just 12 runs.

The Brewers have also struggled this season, but they are now moving in the right direction after winning three of four games against a good St. Louis club. They broke out a slump in which they were hitting .217 over the previous nine games, but came out yesterday and scored eight runs including two home runs from Ryan Braun, making it four dingers in the last two games for Braun.

"It was a matter of time, I guess," pitcher Dave Bush said. "Our hitters are talented, and whatever slump they go through, you know it's not going to last long."

                        Pick: Brewers

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Braves: Young Jo-Jo Reyes has been a boost to the Braves rotation since being called up to the majors. Reyes has two starts under his belt, going 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA. He only lasted 2 2/3 innings in his last outing versus San Diego but it wasn't because he was ineffective. Reyes developed a blister and had to leave the game early, although he had already given up 2 runs. This will be Reyes' first road start of the season.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Phillies (-135, O/U 10): Kyle Kendrick has given the Phillies consistency on the mound this season. He's gone at least 5 innings in all but 1 of his starts this year and Philadelphia is 5-2 when Kendrick takes the mound. While Kendrick has been solid for the most part, 5 of the 7 games he's started have gone OVER the total. Overall, games that Kendrick has pitched have averaged 10.2 runs.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-145, O/U 8.5): The Yankees have to be happy to see their ace back on the mound. New York has won 7 of Chien-Ming Wang's 8 starts this year, with the only loss coming in Wang's most recent outing, a 3-0 pitching duel with Cliff Lee and the Indians. Wang has produced 7 quality starts on the season and he's been the only pitcher the Yankees have been able to consistently rely on in 2008. Wang is 7-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 12 career starts against the Rays.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Rays: Edwin Jackson was dominant in his first 2 starts of 2008, but things have gone south for him since. Jackson is 0-3 in his last 5 starts and has given up 18 runs in his last 28.1 innings of work. Jackson did pitch well in his last start versus Toronto, giving up no runs in 8 innings but he had to settle for a no-decision. Jackson has faced the Yankees twice already this season. He's 1-1 with an impressive 2.17 ERA in 11 innings on the mound.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Los Angeles Dodgers at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Dodgers (-115, O/U 9): Brad Penny started the year off slow but he's bounced back to win four of his last five starts. Penny was lit up in his last outing against the Mets – a team he traditionally struggles with – giving up a whopping 10 runs in just 4 2/3 innings of work. However, Penny had pitched well in his 4 previous starts before that poor outing. The Dodgers and their opponents have combined for at least 12 runs in 5 of Penny's 8 starts.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day

Brewers: Carlos Villanueva has been a nightmare on the mound for Milwaukee this season. He hasn't won a game since his first appearance of the year on April 4th, and the Brewers have lost 5 of Villanueva's 7 starts. One positive note for Brewer backers is that Villanueva has pitched much better at Miller Park, going 1-1 with a 3.70 ERA in 3 starts. The long ball has been a big problem for Villanueva. He's given up 10 home runs in 39 innings pitched this season.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET]

Rockies: Jeff Francis won 17 games for the Rockies in 2007, but he's put up the big goose egg so far this season, going 0-3 with a 5.27 ERA. Francis' first 2 starts of the year were against the Diamondbacks, and he can't be happy to see them a third time. Francis lost both games and gave up 19 hits and 12 runs in just 11 1/3 innings of work. Francis has had a terrible time keeping runners off base, allowing 45 hits and 19 walks in 42 2/3 innings pitched.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Diamondbacks (-135, O/U 9): The emergence of Micah Owings has given Arizona arguably the top pitching staff in MLB. However, despite his 4-1 record, Owings hasn't pitched well of late. The Diamondbacks have lost the last 3 games Owings has started, as he's given up 15 runs in 17 2/3 innings of work. By comparison, in Owings first 26 innings pitched this season, he only gave up 7 runs.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 5
