    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Home team is now 15-1 in this round of NBA playoffs as the Celtics lost in Cleveland, falling to 0-5 on road in playoffs.

-- Elsewhere in Cleveland, Asdrubal Cabrera pulled off just the 14th unassisted triple play in MLB history, vs Toronto.

-- Odalis Perez looked like Tony Gwynn Monday, going 3-3 to raise his batting average to .313 in Nationals' 10-4 win.

-- Mariners scored five runs in top of first, four runs in top of ninth, but lost 13-12 to the Rangers, with ace Bedard lasting just two innings, giving up six runs. Tough times for Seattle.

-- The summer of Cliff Lee continued, as he blanked Toronto for nine innings before Jays won 3-0 in 10th. Lee's ERA is a paltry 0.67 this season.

-- Bronx-Tampa game drew just 13,932 to the Trop Monday, even though the Rays are off to best start in team history. It will be interesting to see if they draw better next three nights.

Tuesday's List of 13: Running the bases in the NL.........

With baseball season roughly 25% over, we're giving quarterly grades to each major league team this week. Today, the NL......

Diamondbacks— Stumbled little bit in last week, but this team looks strong; they need a healthy Orlando Hudson. Grade: A

Braves— 14-4 at home, 5-14 on road; bullpen has been lame; in one-run games, they're 1-10. Chipper is hitting .406. Grade: C-

Cubs— 14-3 in last 17 home games, Theriot is hitting .330 and Fukudome has been as good as advertised. Some Chicago fans want Marmol to be the closer. Grade: A.

Reds— Dunn is struggling with infected big toe, pitching staff is struggling with lack of ability; Arroyo has been awful, Cueto is being rushed. Volquez has been terrific. Grade: D.

Rockies— Tongue-in-cheek TV commercials have the Rockies acting like last year went to their head; their play this year has people wondering how they won the NL last year. Grade: D-

Marlins— Who are these guys? Olsen has been terrific so far and Ramirez earned $70M contract. Uggla might be best player no one has heard of (.***, ) Grade: A+

Astros— Berkman-Tejada-Lee are formidable middle of lineup; not getting much from 1-2 hitters. 8-1 in their last nine games at Minute Maid Park. Surprisingly over .500. Grade: B+

Dodgers— Streaky as hell; need a 3B. Andruw Jones is hitting .170, and getting booed every time he makes out. Lost four in a row after winning ten of previous eleven games. Grade: B-

Brewers— Giving Gagne $10M for one season is a disaster, as is the Fielder/vegetarian experiment. Gallardo blew his ACL out covering first base at Wrigley. '08 is a trainwreck. Grade: F

Metropolitans— Reyes' OB% is hovering around .325, Castillo, Alou, Pedro and El Duque all take turns being hurt. Fanbase is still bitter about last September. Need a big summer. Grade: C

Phillies— Lidge is excellent pickup as the closer; team hung in despite injuries to Rollins, Victorino. Howard is hitting just .171 with only fifty total bases. They figure to improve. Grade: B.

Pirates— Won six of last seven home games; three of top five in their lineup are hitting well over .300. Mientiewicz started the nightcap of twinbill last night at 3B. Eeesh. Grade: B-

Cardinals— Getting more out of less; Mulder's return looks to be doubtful, so they'll need Carpenter to get healthy or they'll be depending on current starters to overachieve. Grade: A-

Padres— 6-19 in their last 25 games, even losing Peavy's last three home starts; they've lost 22 and 13-inning home games. They cut Jim Edmonds. Not much has gone right. Grade: F

Giants— Have strong starting pitching, which keeps them in games as their young players gain experience. Getting Vizquel back this week solidifies the defense. Grade: B-

Nationals— Who assembled this team? Elijah Dukes was such a bad guy in minors, teams refused to take him back; Milledge for Church? Are you kidding? Starting pitchers are OK, rest of team is hideous. Even Zimmerman is struggling. Grade: D

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

            MLB

            Tuesday, May 13

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We will update when projected scores are available.

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Braves: Young Jo-Jo Reyes has been a boost to the Braves rotation since being called up to the majors. Reyes has two starts under his belt, going 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA. He only lasted 2 2/3 innings in his last outing versus San Diego but it wasn't because he was ineffective. Reyes developed a blister and had to leave the game early, although he had already given up 2 runs. This will be Reyes' first road start of the season.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Phillies (-125, O/U 10): Kyle Kendrick has given the Phillies consistency on the mound this season. He's gone at least 5 innings in all but 1 of his starts this year and Philadelphia is 5-2 when Kendrick takes the mound. While Kendrick has been solid for the most part, 5 of the 7 games he's started have gone OVER the total. Overall, games that Kendrick has pitched have averaged 10.2 runs.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-140, O/U 8.5): The Yankees have to be happy to see their ace back on the mound. New York has won 7 of Chien-Ming Wang's 8 starts this year, with the only loss coming in Wang's most recent outing, a 3-0 pitching duel with Cliff Lee and the Indians. Wang has produced 7 quality starts on the season and he's been the only pitcher the Yankees have been able to consistently rely on in 2008. Wang is 7-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 12 career starts against the Rays.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays: Edwin Jackson was dominant in his first 2 starts of 2008, but things have gone south for him since. Jackson is 0-3 in his last 5 starts and has given up 18 runs in his last 28.1 innings of work. Jackson did pitch well in his last start versus Toronto, giving up no runs in 8 innings but he had to settle for a no-decision. Jackson has faced the Yankees twice already this season. He's 1-1 with an impressive 2.17 ERA in 11 innings on the mound.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Los Angeles Dodgers at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Dodgers (-120, O/U 8.5): Brad Penny started the year off slow but he's bounced back to win four of his last five starts. Penny was lit up in his last outing against the Mets – a team he traditionally struggles with – giving up a whopping 10 runs in just 4 2/3 innings of work. However, Penny had pitched well in his 4 previous starts before that poor outing. The Dodgers and their opponents have combined for at least 12 runs in 5 of Penny's 8 starts.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Brewers: Carlos Villanueva has been a nightmare on the mound for Milwaukee this season. He hasn't won a game since his first appearance of the year on April 4th, and the Brewers have lost 5 of Villanueva's 7 starts. One positive note for Brewer backers is that Villanueva has pitched much better at Miller Park, going 1-1 with a 3.70 ERA in 3 starts. The long ball has been a big problem for Villanueva. He's given up 10 home runs in 39 innings pitched this season.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET]

Rockies: Jeff Francis won 17 games for the Rockies in 2007, but he's put up the big goose egg so far this season, going 0-3 with a 5.27 ERA. Francis' first 2 starts of the year were against the Diamondbacks, and he can't be happy to see them a third time. Francis lost both games and gave up 19 hits and 12 runs in just 11 1/3 innings of work. Francis has had a terrible time keeping runners off base, allowing 45 hits and 19 walks in 42 2/3 innings pitched.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Diamondbacks (-135, O/U 9): The emergence of Micah Owings has given Arizona arguably the top pitching staff in MLB. However, despite his 4-1 record, Owings hasn't pitched well of late. The Diamondbacks have lost the last 3 games Owings has started, as he's given up 15 runs in 17 2/3 innings of work. By comparison, in Owings first 26 innings pitched this season, he only gave up 7 runs.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

              SCOREBOARD

              Tuesday, May 13

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay (8:05 p.m.) Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang (6-1, 3.12 ERA) looks to rebound from his first loss of the season when he takes on the surprising Rays. Edwin Jackson (2-3, 4.04) is scheduled to take the mound for Tampa Bay.

              STARS

              Monday

              — Asdrubal Cabrera, Indians, turned the 14th unassisted triple play in major league history in Cleveland’s 3-0, 10-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in the second game of a doubleheader.

              — Manny Ramirez, Red Sox, hit career homer No. 498 in a 7-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

              — Ryan Braun, Brewers, homered twice for the second straight day, leading Milwaukee to an 8-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

              — Lance Berkman, Astros, went 3-for-4 with his 13th home run to help Houston beat the San Francisco Giants 7-3.

              — Josh Hamilton, Rangers, homered and drove in four runs in a wild 13-12 win over the Seattle Mariners.

              — Carlos Zambrano, Cubs, allowed three runs in seven innings and went 2-for-4 in a 12-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.

              DOUBLE YOUR FUN

Ryan Braun hit two home runs for the second game in a row, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-3 victory over St. Louis. Braun followed up Sunday’s two-homer performance by hitting two more off stingy Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (3-2), who had given up four runs or less in each of his first seven starts and had a 2.25 ERA going into the game. Braun has nine homers on the year.

              TRIPLE YOUR FUN

Cleveland’s Asdrubal Cabrera turned the 14th unassisted triple play in major league history, accomplishing the feat in the second game of a doubleheader against Toronto. Cabrera made a diving catch on a line drive by Lyle Overbay, touched second base and then tagged out Marco Scutaro to quickly end the fifth inning of the Indians’ 3-0 loss in 10 innings.

              GETTING CLOSER

Manny Ramirez hit a two-run drive in the first inning of Boston’s 7-3 loss at Minnesota for career homer No. 498. The two-run shot was his second in 20 games and gave him 1,630 RBIs, moving him past Harold Baines for 26th place on the career list.

              IT’S OVER

Tim Hudson limited Pittsburgh to two hits and an unearned run over seven innings and Atlanta halted its seven-game road losing streak and the Pirates’ six-game winning streak with an 8-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader. The Braves still own the majors’ worst road record, 5-14, but finally ended a road losing streak that extended over their last two road trips. They also stopped Pittsburgh’s seven-game home winning streak.

THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT

Matt Garza pitched seven scoreless innings and surging Tampa Bay beat the Yankees 7-1 for its fifth consecutive victory. Jason Bartlett and Dioner Navarro each drove in two runs for the Rays (22-16), who climbed six games over .500 for the first time in franchise history and also extended their home winning streak to a club-record 10 games.

              SNAPPED

Jeff Keppinger and Brandon Phillips hit two-run homers in the seventh inning and the Cincinnati Reds beat Florida 8-7 to end the Marlins’ seven-game winning streak. … Odalis Perez had three hits and two RBIs and pitched into the seventh inning to lead the Nationals over the New York Mets 10-4. Washington ended a three-game slide. … Vladimir Guerrero homered and drove in four runs and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Chicago White Sox 10-7 to snap a four-game losing streak.

              GET LOW

Cliff Lee worked nine scoreless innings in Cleveland’s 3-0 10-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in the second game of a doubleheader. The Indians left-hander failed to become the AL’s first seven-game winner but lowered his major league-leading ERA to 0.67. He gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out five.

              SPEAKING

“They were cheering in the dugout like a bunch of softball girls. I am a professional, I take great offense to that. … They won tonight, but in the long run, look who they are, a last-place team.”—Mets starter Nelson Figueroa after he walked five, hit two batters and committed a throwing error in a 10-4 loss to Washington.

Orlando Magic at Detroit Pistons [TNT | 7 PM ET]

Magic: Orlando PG Jameer Nelson has guaranteed a win for his team in Game 5 at Detroit, pulling something out of Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace's bag of tricks. "We're going to make some adjustments and we're going to win this game," Nelson said after Orlando's 90-89 loss in Game 4 on Saturday. "I'm not being arrogant or cocky or anything like that. I think (Saturday) we let it slip out of our hands. Game 2 we let it slip out of our hands. We're going to win this game in Detroit." If the Magic don't win, one thing is certain - they will disappear.

The UNDER is 9-2 in Orlando's last 11 road games.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Orlando's last 9 games vs. Central Division.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pistons (-6.5, O/U 185.5): Detroit head coach Flip Saunders shed some light on the severity of PG Chauncey Billups' injury but remains optimistic that he will be ready to go on Tuesday. “It wouldn’t matter if it were Game 7 of the NBA Finals or Game 4 of Orlando - his leg is just not ready,” Saunders said. “He can’t really do anything to really be effective.” Regardless, veteran Lindsey Hunter did a great job filling in for Billups while rookie Rodney Stuckey was saddled with 5 fouls. Hunter had not played in the previous 3 games of the series but scored 8 points in 26 minutes, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Pistons are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 home games.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Detroit's last 9 games vs. Southeast Division.
The OVER is 10-2 in the last 12 meetings at Detroit.

Key Injuries - PG Chauncey Billups (17 ppg; hamstring) is questionable.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

San Antonio Spurs at New Orleans Hornets [TNT | 9:30 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio's Tim Duncan was reborn back on his home court, and it will interesting to see what happens when the series shifts back to New Orleans for Game 5. Duncan totaled 38 points and 28 rebounds with 6 assists and 8 blocks in the 2 home games after collecting 23 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks in the first 2 games combined on the road. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich may also leave Manu Ginobili in the starting lineup, where he averaged 23 points and 7 assists in the last 2 games.

Spurs are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 road games.
The OVER is 8-2-1 in San Antonio's last 11 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Hornets (-3, O/U 186.5): Home teams in the Western Conference have yet to lose in the second round, and New Orleans has won 17 of 18 at home dating back to the regular season. So the Hornets are certainly not in panic mode even though they were not able to battle back in Game 4 like they did in the first round against Dallas. “We knew they would respond and come back hard,” said New Orleans F Peja Stojakovic, who has totaled only 14 points combined in the last 2 games. “They’re the defending champions and we didn’t play close to the way we played at home. We have to regroup and hopefully we’ll play better basketball at home." Stojakovic must play better at home, where he averaged 23.5 points in the first 2 games.

Hornets are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 Tuesday games.
Hornets are 5-1 SU & ATS in their last 6 home games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                          Tuesday Playoff NBA Gameday

Rasheed Wallace and the Detroit Pistons will be looking to close out their second-round series with a win over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday. Here's your playoff gameday …

Orlando Magic at Detroit Pistons, 7:00pm ET

After dropping the first two games of this second-round series the Magic bounced back with a 111-86 win over the Pistons in Game 3 last Wednesday night. However, Orlando couldn't quite duplicate that feat in Game 4 on Saturday, as they fell 90-89 to go down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. Hedo Turkoglu had a team-high 20 points for the Magic in that loss, while Jameer Nelson, Rashard Lewis, and Maurice Evans scored 15 points apiece. Dwight Howard was held to eight points and 12 rebounds. Richard Hamilton led the Pistons' attack with a game-high 32 points in the win. Tayshaun Prince added 17 points on the night, Wallace had 16 points, and Antonio McDyess grabbed 14 rebounds.

The oddsmakers like Detroit's chances of closing out this series on Tuesday night, as they opened as 5.5-point favorites. The total for the contest was opened at 184 points.

San Antonio Spurs at New Orleans Hornets, 9:30pm ET

The Spurs' chances of repeating as NBA champions weren't looking good after the first two games of their second-round series against the Hornets - New Orleans won those games at home by scores of 101-82 and 102-84. However, San Antonio rebounded with a 110-99 win in Game 3 last Thursday, and they then tied up the seven-game series with a convincing 100-80 victory on Sunday. Tim Duncan led the way for the Spurs with 22 points and 15 rebounds in Game 4, while Tony Parker picked up 21 points and added eight assists. Manu Ginobili was good for 15 points and eight assists. Chris Paul poured in 23 points in Sunday's loss for the Hornets, and David West had just 10 points.

Despite the Spurs' winning streak the oddsmakers still like the Hornets at home in Game 5 - they opened as 4-point favorites. The total for the contest was opened at 185.
