Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.....

      13) I don't give a rat's ass about the OJ Mayo mess that ESPN will make a big deal out in next few days; its the dark underside of college basketball, and a direct result of the NBA age-limit. If there was no limit, OJ Mayo never sees a college dorm room, never has the need to have flatscreen TVs bought for him. He would have bought them himself for his new mansion.

      12) If you expect college coaches to police these kids 24 hours a day, you're being unrealistic. These kids have to play one or more years in college, and if USC doesn't recruit them, one of their opponents will. Coaches get fired for losing and getting caught cheating, in that order. Keeping players away from the agents out in LA has to be nearly impossible.

      11) Sunday was first playoff at Players Championship since '87 when Sandy Lyle won; oddly, he was also the last European to win this event. I felt bad for Paul Goydos, who could use the five-year exemption that comes with winning this event.

      10) Quick lookalikes: Goydos and Lou Piniella.

      9) Tom Lehman has played 62 tournament rounds at Players; he hit just one of his 62 tee shots on 17 into water, best record of any Tour players on the infamous hole with an island green

      8) Robert Gamez holds a weird Tour record: longest stretch in between Tour wins: 15 years, six months.

      7) Brett Quigley holds a Tour record for most money earned on Tour without winning any tournaments: $8,632,152.

      6) JB Holmes' front nine Sunday; five bogeys, four birdies, and no pars. Very interesting round.

      5) Imagine if the first baseball game you ever saw was at Miller Park this weekend, Cardinals at Brewers; you would think it is normal for pitchers to bat 8th, not 9th. I've had the reasoning explained to me, but I still don't think its a good idea.

      4) Tampa Rays won their last nine home games, are 21-16 and a legit contender in AL playoff race; they pitch well, they catch the ball and they have lot of guys who can run fast. This week they have the Bronx Bombers in for four games; hope the folks in Tampa area show up and support this upstart team.

      3) Dodgers' Kuroda lost his no-hitter with two out in seventh, then all hell broke loose as Astros exploded for 8-5 win, fourth loss in row for the streaky-as-hell Dodgers. Cecil Cooper has his Astros playing good ball, surprisingly so.

      2) Watching replay of Navy-North Carolina lacrosse game on ESPNU; old friend Jordan DiNola is defenseman for Navy, the youngest of three brothers, all of whom played lacrosse for the Middies. You couldn't have better kids defending our country.

      1) Navy upset Tar Heels in the NCAA tournament Saturday, and faces Johns Hopkins in quarterfinals. Young DiNola was Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, by the way.

                      Monday Playoff Gameday

Both the NBA and NHL playoffs continue on Monday night, with games scheduled for Cleveland and Dallas.

                      NHL Gameday

Detroit Red Wings at Dallas Stars, 8:00pm ET

The Red Wings will be looking to take a 3-0 stranglehold on the Western Conference final when they head down to Dallas for Game 3 of this best-of-seven series on Monday night. Detroit handily won Game 1 of this set by a score of 4-1 last Thursday night, and they made it two straight wins over the Stars with a slim 2-1 victory on Saturday night.

That Saturday win came with Detroit down a skater - playoff scoring star Johan Franzen. The forward, who has scored 12 goals in 11 postseason games, was forced to sit out the contest with concussion-like symptoms, and will miss Monday's game as well. Detroit is hoping that Franzen is able to return to the lineup later during the week.

However, the Red Wings didn't need Franzen on Saturday, as they got goals from Henrik Zetterberg and Darren Helm and 17 saves from Chris Osgood in the 2-1 victory. Stephane Robidas had the lone Dallas marker, while Marty Turco turned aside 32 of 34 shots between the pipes for the Stars. Dallas forwards Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro both received 10-minute penalties at the end of the game, but no suspensions were handed out.

The Stars could also be without forward Jere Lehtinen on Monday night, as he suffered a leg injury in Game 2. Dallas at least will have home-ice advantage in Game 3, but Detroit's momentum had them opening as road favorites for the contest - check your favorite sportsbooks for the latest odds and total for this game closer to its starting time.
