Pick 'n' Roll: Thursday's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Cleveland at Boston (-9, 177)

So Game 1 didn't exactly turn into the superstar showcase that everybody expected. LeBron James was held to just 12 points on 2-for-18 shooting, while Boston's Paul Pierce had only four points and Ray Allen was held off the score sheet completely.

It was a weird one, but James still had a chance to tie the game in the final minute and the Cavs easily covered the number. LeBron will bounce back strong in Game 2 and this one should be close down the wire again.

      Pick: Cleveland

New Orleans at San Antonio (-6 1/2, 183)

This series is quickly turning into the Chris Paul Show. The New Orleans point guard followed up a solid Game 1 with a spectacular Game 2, dropping 30 points to go along with 12 helpers.

Numbers like that make Hornets coach Byron Scott’s life a lot easier.

"He runs an 'organized playground'," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters of Scott. "Byron is going to call plays for certain guys to get certain looks, and they do a great job with it, but a good portion of the time, Chris [Paul] takes control with the basketball, and he makes a decision."

      Pick: New Orleans

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Dallas at Detroit (-200, 5)

The Red Wings seem to have everything going for them as this series for the Western Conference championship gets underway. They are the higher seed, they're more rested, and they dominated the Stars in the season series, winning three of four games.

Game 1 will be played in Joe Louis Arena where the Wings are almost unbeatable and where the Stars have only won once in the last two years.

Starting to get the idea? Essentially Dallas is heading to Detroit like lambs to the slaughter.

Basically, the only chance the Stars have of winning Game 1, as they come off a hard-fought and emotional quadruple-overtime win against San Jose Monday night, is if Marty Turco shuts down the Detroit snipers. If he continues playing the way he has been throughout the playoffs, it's perfectly reasonable to believe he will keep the Wings off the scoreboard. He's got a 1.73 goals-against average and he's coming off an amazing performance on Monday in which he faced 62 shots and allowed only one goal.

However, the Wings have a goalie who's been just as good. As impressive as Turco has been, Detroit's Chris Osgood has a better save percentage, a better goals-against average and more shutouts.

It wouldn't be surprising to see a low-scoring game as the Red Wings attempt to regain their rhythm after a full week off and Dallas tries to shake off the bumps and bruises acquired in the previous series.

          Pick: Red Wings + Under

Tampa Bay at Toronto (-120, 9)

We took a look at the tough times Toronto bettors were going through in an article earlier this week, but things may finally be looking up after Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Rays, which was their six win in seven games. Those six runs were the most Toronto has produced since posting an 11-run effort against the Orioles about three weeks ago.

With a lineup like Toronto's, it was only a matter of time before the Jays starting putting some runs on the board. Now Toronto bettors just have to hope the pitching holds strong as the bats heat up.

                          Pick: Jays

                          San Francisco at Pittsburgh (-115, 7 1/2)

It's safe to say Pirates lefty Paul Maholm feels at home in Pittsburgh's PNC Park. The 25-year-old is 2-0 with a stingy 0.89 ERA when throwing from his home mound, but is 0-3 with a 9.60 ERA on the road.

He was tagged for seven earned runs over five innings of work in a 9-8 loss at Washington in his last outing. And Maholm may have to be in top form against Matt Cain, who has won his last three starts, boasting a 1.40 ERA over that span.

                          Pick: Pirates

Cleveland Indians at New York Yankees [1:05 PM ET]

Indians: After getting shelled in his first 2 outings of the year, Paul Byrd has rebounded with 4 solid performances. In his last four starts, Byrd has only allowed 4 runs in 25 2/3 innings pitched. One of those games came against the Yankees, and even though he allowed 3 home runs, Byrd and the Indians got the win. In his career, Byrd is 2-4 with 4.64 ERA against New York.

Indians are 6-2 in their last 8 games following a win.
The UNDER is 9-2 in Cleveland's last 11 games overall.

Yankees (-150, O/U 10): Mike Mussina has really turned it on of late, going a perfect 3-0 in his last 3 starts. Moose has only given up 5 runs and 2 walks in his last 18 innings pitched. Mussina pitched against Cleveland on April 28th, getting the victory after allowing just 2 runs over 5 innings of work. For his career, Mussina is 12-9 versus the Tribe with a 4.75 ERA.

Yankees are 21-7 in the last 28 meetings at New York.
The UNDER is 8-1-1 in New York's last 10 games overall.

St. Louis Cardinals at Colorado Rockies [3:05 PM ET]

Cardinals(-115, O/U 10.5): Kyle Lohse has been a valuable addition to the Cardinals rotation this season. After coming over from Philadelphia, Lohse is 3-1 with 3.79 ERA for the Redbirds in 2008. Lohse faced Colorado in the season opener, giving up 3 hits and no runs in a no-decision. One thing to be concerned about is that Lohse was tagged by the Cubs in his most recent outing, allowing 8 runs in 6 innings of work.

Cardinals are 6-2 in their last 8 games on grass.
The UNDER is 9-3-1 in St. Louis' last 13 games overall.

Rockies : Jorge De La Rosa has only 1 start on the season and it wasn't pretty. In just 4 innings against the Dodgers, De La Rosa gave up 9 runs on 9 hits. Obviously, the Rockies are hoping for a much better performance out him today but that may not happen. In 3 career starts versus the Cardinals, De La Rosa is 1-2 with a 7.11 ERA and 2.05 WHIP, while St. Louis hitters are batting a whopping .329 against him.

Rockies are 4-13 in their last 17 games overall.
The UNDER is 17-8-1 in the last 26 meetings.

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-125, O/U 8.5): As usual, Josh Beckett has been a horse on the mound for Boston, going at least 6 innings in 4 of his 5 starts. After walking 4 batters in his first outing of the season, Beckett has only walked 1 in each of his last 4 appearances. Beckett has started 1 game in his career against the Tigers, and he was lit up for 6 hits and 5 runs over 6 innings of work.

Red Sox are 21-6 in their last 27 Thursday games.
Red Sox are 31-15 in the last 46 meetings.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Tigers: It hasn't just been a disappointing start for the Tigers in general this season, but also for their ace Justin Verlander. Verlander is 1-5 with a lofty 6.28 ERA in 2008. In his last 2 outings against the Twins and Angels, Verlander gave up 10 runs and 6 walks in 12 2/3 innings pitched. He's started 2 games in his career against the Red Sox, going 1-1 with an ERA of 4.61.

Tigers are 1-7 in Verlander's last 8 starts.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Cavs: The bad news from Game 1 is that Cleveland shot less than 31 percent from the field, including a horrid 2-for-18 performance from star LeBron James. The good news is that the Cavs still almost won the game despite the worst shooting game of James' career, as his driving layup with 8.9 seconds left would have tied it. James must find a way to limit his turnovers after he committed 10 in the series opener against the Celtics. "I have to give a lot of credit to their defense," James said. "They are a very good shrink-the-floor team. I missed a lot of shots that I can usually make."

Cavs are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The UNDER is 10-3 in Cleveland's last 13 games overall.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 85

Celtics (-8.5, O/U 177.5): Boston's strategy of putting the ball in James' hands when heading up the court worked to perfection in Game 1, as he often found himself trying to give up the ball to his teammates. "That's Rajon (Rondo)'s job every game," Celtics forward Paul Pierce said. "So I expect us to definitely go ahead and do that against their ballhandlers, because I feel like we have an advantage there." Boston is confident that the Cavs will miss their perimeter shots more often than make them, and that's exactly what happened in Game 1.

Celtics are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 home games.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Boston's last 9 Thursday games.

                              Key Injuries - NONE

New Orleans Hornets at San Antonio Spurs [ESPN | 9:30 PM ET]

Hornets: New Orleans has been able to win each of the first 2 games of this series by getting off to great starts after halftime. That could prove to be a challenge on the road without the home crowd support. The Hornets have outscored the Spurs by 30 points so far in the third quarter through the first 2 games. "I told the guys that all we've done is we've won the 2 games at home like we're supposed to," New Orleans head coach Byron Scott said. "The series gets tougher going into San Antonio. We've got to be ready to play."

Hornets are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games.
The OVER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings at San Antonio.

                              Key Injuries - NONE

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 88

Spurs (-7, O/U 182): It's true that San Antonio has never won a playoff series when down 0-2, so the next 2 games present a big challenge for the defending NBA champs. The Spurs have not lost at home in the postseason since Game 4 of last year's Western Conference semifinals, winning 9 straight there since then. One of the keys will be holding the Hornets under 100 points, as San Antonio is 0-4 against them when they reach the century mark.

Favorite is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
Spurs are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 Thursday games.
The OVER is 7-2-1 in San Antonio's last 10 games overall.
