    Tips and Trends
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals [WGN | 1:35 PM ET]

Cubs (-130, O/U 9): Ted Lilly will look to build off his first victory of the season, as he shut down the Mets at Wrigley Field last time out, allowing just 1 earned run over 6 innings in a 8-1 victory on April 22nd. The left-hander retired his first 10 batters and lowered his ERA from 9.16 to 7.30. Lilly holds a dominating 2.06 career ERA against the Nationals in 6 starts.

Cubs are 7-2 in their last 9 games overall.
Cubs are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Nationals: According to the numbers, John Lannan would much rather be pitching on the road. The left-hander holds a 1.37 ERA on the road compared to a lofty 13.50 ERA at Nationals Stadium. Lannan hasn't faced the Cubs in his career.

Nationals are 5-17 in their last 22 games overall.

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

The right-hander is 5-0 in his 5 starts this season with a 2.31 ERA and has almost tripled his strikeout-to-walk ratio (29 Ks, 10 walks). Webb has allowed 2 runs or less in 4 of his 5 starts and has suffered just 1 regular season loss dating back to last September. However, the last time he was at Petco, he was clubbed for 6 runs in just 5+ innings of a 6-4 loss.

    Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 2 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Padres (-120, O/U 6.5): After starting the year 3-0, staff ace Jake Peavy suddenly can't get a decision. The Padres have lost both of his 2 starts by a combined 5 runs, but only lost 3 in-a-row for Peavy once all last year. In 22 games the Alabama native has struggled against Arizona in his career: 10-9 5.11 ERA.

Padres are 7-1 in Peavy's last 8 home starts vs. Arizona.

Weaver has allowed a total of 20 hits and 7 runs in his last 2 starts alone. The Northridge native is just 1-1 with a 14.14 ERA in 2 career starts against the Tigers.

The right-hander pitched 6 innings and allowed just 1 earned run and said afterward he finally "felt comfortable." Verlander is 0-1 in 2 career starts against the Angels, but he has allowed just 3 earned runs over 13 innings.

Tigers are 7-1 in Verlander's last 8 Sunday starts.
The OVER is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona at San Diego (-120, 7)

Anytime you can get a starter who's leading the league in wins, and who also happens to throw for the best team in the league as an underdog, you'd better take a shot.

Brandon Webb is off to a 5-0 start with a 2.31 ERA to help Arizona open the season at 17-7. So why is he the underdog today? Well, Arizona has lost three of its last seven games, which is the closest thing this club has seen to a slump all year. Plus, Jake Peavy takes the ball and his 2.00 ERA to the hill for San Diego.

            Pick: Diamondbacks

            L.A. Angeles at Detroit (-130, 9 1/2)

It's amazing what five early-season wins can do for a team. After an embarrassing start, the Tigers have lost just once over their last six games heading into tonight's Sunday Night matchup in the Motor City. Detroit is scoring 7.6 runs per game over its recent hot stretch, but it hasn't all been about offense.

"The last few days, we've had very good starting pitching, and that's more of a key to us than anything," manager Jim Leyland said after Saturday's 6-4 win over the Angels. "You always look better when you get good starting pitching."

That task falls on Justin Verlander tonight as he squares off against Jered Weaver. Verlander altered his arm angle slightly before his last start, helping him notch his first win of the year by allowing just one run in a six-inning performance against the Rangers.

            Pick: Tigers

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              N.Y. Rangers at Pittsburgh (-145, 5 1/2)

Game 1 was a sloppy effort from both teams that ended up being an entertaining 5-4 win for Pittsburgh after New York jumped out to a big 3-0 lead. The Mellon Arena's soft ice had a lot to do with it as the puck was bouncing all over the place on Friday night - don't expect that to change much for the rest of the series whether the games are in Pittsburgh or MSG - and the officiated crew took some heat for a few questionable penalty calls.

Today's game should be much tighter all the way around and the Rangers have some nice value in the bounce-back spot.

              Pick: Rangers

Dallas at San Jose (-165, 5)

San Jose coach Ron Wilson says his Sharks were too soft in Game 1's 3-2 loss, especially around Dallas' net. And that's where they need to be much more imposing if they're going to get anything past Marty Turco. Dallas’ netminder has been dominant in the crease stopping rubber and an asset out of it, moving the puck for his defensemen.

San Jose will come out banging tonight, but the Stars may also get a boost if the silky smooth Sergei Zubov is finally able to return to the lineup from a sports hernia.

              Pick: Sharks

                          Odds: -130, 9 ½
Starting Pitchers: Jered Weaver vs. Justin Verlander

ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball showcase features two teams expected to be among the American League’s best this year. Both the Angels and Tigers were favorites to win their respective divisions and right now the Angels are atop the AL West.

Neither team has had things go the way they wanted so far this year, however, so this game could serve as a turning point for both squads.

The Angels have been bitten hard by the injury bug, especially in the pitching staff. Starters John Lackey and Kelvin Escobar, who combined for 37 wins last year, both suffered major injuries. Their absence has put added pressure on L.A.’s young hurlers, namely Jered Weaver.

Weaver had a standout rookie campaign, going 11-2 with a 2.56 ERA, and followed that with an up-and-down sophomore season. An opportunity knocked on Weaver’s door this season with Lackey and Escobar shelved but he hasn’t answered the call.

He is just 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA and .289 batting average against this year. The road has been especially unkind to Weaver, where he is 0-2 with a 6.88 ERA.

That doesn’t bode well when going up against a Tigers lineup that has awoken from its early-season slumber. Detroit was predicted to score 1,000 runs this season but the opening weeks made that forecast look unrealistic.

A slow start from the batter’s box left the Tigers 2-10 through the first 10 games of the season, but a quick turnaround at the plate has propelled Detroit on an 8-3 run. The Tigers averaged 7.8 runs per game during that run.

Detroit will have “ace” Justin Verlander on the mound, even though he hasn’t quite lived up that title this season. The young right-handed flamethrower is just 1-3 with a 5.93 ERA. Verlander has boasted a great strikeout-to-walk ratio in past years but that has not been the case this year as he has walked 14 and struck out just 17 in 30 innings.

Verlander didn’t pitch against the Angels last year but had two strong showings against them in his breakout 2006 season. He allowed just three earned runs in 13 innings of work that season but he could have his work cut out for him this year. Los Angeles is among the league’s best in numerous offensive categories, including second in team batting average and stolen bases, fourth in OPS, seventh in scoring and ninth in home runs.

Two trends stand out from 2007’s series between Los Angeles and Detroit. Big run production was the most glaring trend as the teams combined to average 14.3 runs per game en route to pushing all eight contests over the total.

Additionally, the series was dominated by the home-field advantage with the home team going 6-2 and winning by 5.8 runs per game.

The “worldwide leader” made a wise decision in making this contest its featured game. Two promising young hurlers going up against two explosive offenses will no doubt produce an entertaining game.

                            AILING

Dodgers 3B Nomar Garciaparra was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left calf. … Chipper Jones sat out the Braves’ 4-3 loss to the Mets with back spasms. … D-backs starter Micah Owings left in the sixth inning against the Padres with a sprained ankle. … Red Sox DH David Ortiz was scratched from the lineup against Tampa Bay with a bruised right knee. … Twins RHP Scott Baker left in the fifth inning against Texas with a mild groin strain.

                            UMPIRE INJURED

Plate umpire Kerwin Danley was taken off the field in an ambulance after he was struck on the jaw by Brad Penny’s fastball that Dodgers catcher Russell Martin missed in the fourth inning against the Rockies. The game was delayed for 18 minutes, with Danley laying nearly motionless behind home plate. A Dodgers spokesman said the umpire lost consciousness briefly, but was conscious and coherent when he was placed into the ambulance and taken to the hospital.

                            HARD-EARNED W

Tadahito Iguchi’s home run off Yusmeiro Petit in the 13th inning lifted the Padres to an 8-7 win over Arizona, snapping a three-game skid in extra-inning games. San Diego played extra innings for the third time in five home games, including a 22-inning loss to Colorado on April 17 that lasted 6 hours, 16 minutes. This one went 4:02.

                            10 SPOT

The Dodgers scored 10 runs in the first inning of an 11-3 win over the Rockies. Mark Redman needed 45 pitches to get out of the first inning in his Dodger Stadium debut. Brad Penny was the beneficiary, and was also the starting pitcher the last time the Dodgers reached double digits in runs during one inning. That was on May 6, 2005, when they got 10 in a win at Cincinnati.

                            STRONG RETURN

Making his first start in nearly three weeks, Erik Bedard was dominant in Seattle’s 5-3 win over Oakland. Bedard returned from the disabled list to give up just two hits in 6 2-3 scoreless innings. He walked four and struck out four.

                            LOOK OUT!

Call it a purpose pitch or one that just got away, but Astros manager Cecil Cooper was none too happy about a pitch from Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright that went behind Brad Ausmus. The pitch came after Houston starter Roy Oswalt hit Jason LaRue with a pitch. “That guy (Wainwright) is one of the best pitchers in the league,” Cooper said. “He doesn’t have control problems.”

                            SPEAKING

“I saw Prince coming out of the corner of my eye. I just bunted the ball and got out of the way. He was probably going to run me and the catcher over.” — Brewers pitcher Carlos Villanueva, who was at the plate when a suicide squeeze was called with 270-lb Prince Fielder at third.

Cavaliers won Game 2 by 30, lost Game 3 by 36, so your guess is as good as mine here; other than Lebron, Cavalier starters in Game 3 made just 19-54 shots. Arenas left Game 3 with injured knee, not sure if he plays here. Washington is totally different team without Arenas, a lot less explosvie.

Spurs have 3-0 lead over Suns, who have to be stunned after beating San Antonio easily twice after acquiring Shaq. They're getting almost nothing out of Grant Hill and they can't stop the Spurs, who shot 56% from floor in Game 3. Suns were just 2-6 from arc in Game 3. Matter of pride here for the Suns.

Billups was 2-11 from the floor in Detroit's dismal 95-75 defeat in Game 3 at Philly- they also turned ball 25 times- during year, they turned ball over less than 12 times a game. 76ers made 26 of 31 from charity stripe in Game 3, got 11 offensive boards as they grabbed 2-1 series lead. Lot of pressure on Detroit here.

Paul was just 4-18 from floor, West 6-20 in Game 3 loss, as the Mavericks chopped Hornets' lead to 2-1; Terry had 22 points to support Nowitzki's big night. Dallas was +9 on boards and held New Orleans to 38% from floor, after Hornets had shot 47 and 61% in first two tilts. Home team won all three in series.
