    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Dolphins signed the Long kid from Michigan to be the #1 pick in draft Saturday; five years, $57M. Now the focus goes to St Louis, where my Rams have many options at #2.

-- Joffrey Lupul scored at 6:06 of OT in Game 7, giving Flyers the most dramatic series-clinching goal possible, tearing the hearts out of Washington fans, as Philly won, 3-2.

-- Reds are 0-7 in series openers, 9-6 in all other games.

-- Spurs outscored Suns 17-2 to start second half and drilled Phoenix to take 2-0 lead in series. For mostly old team like the Suns, losing this series would be tough to take, but you get the sense San Antonio is little tougher (moreso mentally?)

-- Nebraska drew 80,149 fans to its spring game, at $10 a pop with tickets getting scalped for as much as $95. Crazy stuff.

-- If Long is such a great lineman, and QB Henne is rising on so many draft boards, then why didn't Michigan beat I-AA Appalachian State last season? You'd think a team with a 1st round draft pick at both tackle, QB could beat a I-AA team.

Wednesday's List of 13: Money and the American League

Orioles-- Baltimore owner Angelos got sweetheart deal when Nationals moved into Washington; he is guaranteed sale price of $360M for the team, and an annual revenue of $130M. They gave him control of the MASN regional TV network, too.

Red Sox-- Average ticket price is $48, highest in major leagues. If you have claustrophobia, don't go to Fenway; very crowded with no parking anywhere. Owners have 50% of NASCAR car, own 80% of NESN the TV network-- a team that sold for $380M six years ago is now worth $816M.

White Sox-- Tropicana Field was built for the White Sox, who used St Pete as leverage to get Chicago to build the last of the cookie-cutter parks (Camden Yards was next park built). Karma did in White Sox, who have one of the worst new parks, but in 2005, they did end their long World Series drought.

Indians-- I am not reassured that my car insurance company is forking over $3.6M a year in stadium naming rights for Jacobs Field (or what used to be called Jacobs Field). Shouldn't they be investing my premiums more wisely? Anyway, this park is in downtown Cleveland and it is nice, with friendly people.

Detroit-- Played to 94% capacity at home LY, have sold 19,000 season tickets this year; got off to dreadful start with a payroll of $138M this spring- value of franchise has gone from $235M in 2004 to $407M now. Next to Petco, is biggest of new parks. Average ticket for this park is just $19-- minor league hockey costs $17 a ticket in my hometown.

Kansas City-- Royals Stadium is being renovated as we speak; $14 average ticket is tied with Arizona's for cheapest in majors. KC's owner is former CEO of Wal-Mart, which explains some of their past practices, but they've been spending more lately- the new manager Hillman had Kansas City ready to go this spring.

LA Angels-- Anaheim Stadium has gotten more facelifts than Jerry Jones, with Rams coming, then going; they market this as a regional franchise from Orange County to LA, which caused value of team to almost double in last four years. Revenues are up from $127M in 2003 to just about $200M last season.

Minnesota-- They finally suckered the politicians into building a stadium with 60 luxury boxes and 4,000 club seats, but there is no retractable roof-- helllooooo????? Anyway, lets hope the cheap owner puts his new revenue into buying players that'll help fill the place. He bought the team in '84 for $44M, now it is worth $328M-- it is inexcusable to let another free agent go

Bronx-- Steinbrenners owned this team eight years longer than any other current owner has owned his club. They spent $10M in 1973 to buy the team-- it is worth $1.3B now. If Steinbrenner gets inducted into Cooperstown, I'll puke (convicted for giving Nixon illegal campaign contributions, so no Pete Rose, then no George), but he does deserve to be in Business Hall of Fame.

Oakland-- Submitted proposal for stadium to be built by 2011 in suburban Fremont, on land owned by Cisco computer folks. Their farm club in Sacramento outdrew the Pittsburgh Pirates two Fridays ago. A's owner Wolff is old college buddy of Bud Selig, so it was good omen for A's when he bought the club. Bud ain't bringing his rich pal into a bad situation.

Seattle-- Nintendo has owned M's since 1992; their stadium is one of best, and was one of most necessary. Nintendo paid a cool $100M for team then, it is worth $466M now. We hope the courts do right thing and keep NBA Sonics in Seattle, but not at the cost of building yet another new arena. Key Arena is 13 years old-- what could possibly be wrong with it?

Tampa Bay-- They're spending revenue sharing money on the young players they have, trying to impress politicians and the fans so they can get 34,000-seat stadium with retractable roof (like the tennis stadium in Australia) built. Without the stadium it is Vegas or San Antonio, here we come.

Texas-- Stupidly paid A-Rod all that money, then got off hook for that, then hired a 20-something Ivy League kid to run team; he traded Teixeira for a franchise catcher, but he's in the minor leagues. Simply put, this team is a disaster, but they do have a nice ballpark; team has increased in value from $250M in '98 to $412M now, proving that even incompetents can get rich.

Toronto-- Have a $100M+ payroll, have benefitted as much as anyone from revenue sharing- team has doubled in value over last five years. Problem is, they're in same division as Boston and Bronx-- until they can beat one of those two, they're out of luck on the field. Have one of only three turf fields left in MLB.

                NBA Games

Pistons lost Game 1 at home to Philly, blowing a 51-38 halftime lead as Rip Hamilton was just 5-17 from floor, Pistons shot 39% from floor for game. Gravy game for ascending 76er squad that was just 1-5 from arc in Game 1, but had 18 offensive rebounds and got to line 27 times.

Boston crushed Hawks in Game 1, holding Atlanta to 38% on field goal tries, 3-14 from arc. Joe Johnson was just 7-22, while Celtics were 9-16 from arc and pulled away from 49-40 halftime lead to win easily. Do we really need 72 hours between games when there is no travel involved? Do we?

Iverson got tossed from Game 1, Anthony had a recent DUI, they gave up 128 points in opener, so we're not exactly going out on limb when we say this is undisciplined team. Lakers led just 58-56 at half, then hung 70 on Nuggets in second half, as they outscored Denver 39-22 in third quarter. How did NBA let the Gasol-to-Laker trade go through? You're telling me that LA isn't giving Memphis some kind of kickback for handing them the top seed in West?

                    Wednesday, April 23

                    Wednesday NBA Gameday

The Celtics, Lakers, and Sixers will all be looking to extend series leads when they take to the floor for their respective Game 2's on Wednesday. Here is your NBA Gameday …

Philadelphia 76ers at Detroit Pistons, 7:30pm ET

The Sixers finished 19 games behind the Pistons in the Eastern Conference standings during the regular season, so they weren't expected to put up much of a fight in this opening-round series. It seems, however, that no one relayed that fact to Philadelphia, as they came up with a big 90-86 road win over favored Detroit in Game 1 on Sunday.

Andre Miller led the way for the Sixers in the upset, scoring 20 points and picking up six assists. Willie Green was good for 17 points in the contest, while Andre Iguodala had 16 points and eight assists, and Samuel Dalembert grabbed 10 boards. Rasheed Wallace had a game-high 24 points in the loss for the Pistons, and he also had nine rebounds. Chauncey Billups tossed in 14 points on the night, while Richard Hamilton had 13 points.

The oddsmakers like Detroit's chances of shaking off that Game 1 upset with a big win Wednesday - the Pistons opened as 10-point favorites. The total opened at 178 points.

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics, 8:00pm ET

The Hawks finished 29 games behind the Celtics in the Eastern Conference standings during the regular season, so they weren't expected to put up much of a fight in this opening-round series. They, however, did not manage to pull off an upset in Game 1 - the Celtics pulled away early and cruised to an easy 104-81 home win on Sunday night.

Ray Allen picked up a team-high 18 points in the win for Boston, while Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce were each good for 16 points. Rajon Rondo contributed 15 points and nine assists to the victory. Al Horford scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Hawks in his playoff debut, while Joe Johnson had 19 points and seven assists in the loss. Mike Bibby was held to just five points, and Josh Smith had only six points that day.

The Celtics are listed as big home favorites once again for Game 2, as the Hawks were set as 15-point underdogs on the opening line. The total for the contest opened at 190.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:30pm ET

While there were 29 games between the No. 1 and No. 8 teams in the Eastern Conference standings, the first-place Lakers only finished seven games up on the eighth-place Nuggets in the Western Conference standings. Still, Los Angeles had little trouble knocking off Denver on Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 128-114 Game 1 victory.

Kobe Bryant scored 32 points for the Lakers in Game 1, but it was Pau Gasol that put up the game's best line - 36 points and 16 rebounds. Lamar Odom chipped in with 17 points and 14 rebounds for Los Angeles in the victory, and Luke Walton had 16 points. Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony each scored 30 points in the loss for the Nuggets, with Anthony also picking up 12 boards. Linas Kleiza contributed 23 points in the game.

The oddsmakers expect Game 2 to be a little closer, as the Lakers were opened as only 7.5-point favorites at home. After a high-scoring first game, the Game 2 total sits at 230.

                          Toronto at Tampa Bay (+125, 8 1/2)

If Toronto manager John Gibbons is looking for a statement game to jumpstart his Blue Jays, today might be the day.

Toronto released future Hall of Famer Frank Thomas earlier this week after the Big Hurt got off to a terrible start. The move created some a bit of controversy, considering Thomas led the team in homers and RBI last season, but he's never been a clubhouse guy and the Jays probably wouldn't have had a daily spot in the lineup for him once Scott Rolen returns.

It was a good team move for the Jays and now they get to send out their undisputed leader Roy Halladay to the mound today. The Doctor has been preaching the importance of a fast start all spring and now he has a chance to get the club back on track after Tuesday's 6-4 loss at the Disney Sports Complex.

Halladay, who's coming off back-to-back complete games, shares the mound with Tampa's Jason Hammel.

                          Pick: Jays

                          Arizona at L.A. Dodgers (-115, 8)

These Arizona Diamondbacks may not cool down anytime soon. They've lost just three of their last 17 games and sit with a six-game lead over the second-place Colorado Rockies heading into tonight's game against the Dodgers.

Meanwhile, Joe Torre's boys are seven games off the pace, digging a dangerous early-season hole for themselves.

"You never want to take anything away from someone who pitched well, but we're better than what we have been showing," Dodgers manager Joe Torre told reporters after Los Angeles dropped four of five on the road.

"We score runs, but they have been in bunches. We need to be a more consistent type of offense that we can throw at people, and that is one thing we expect will happen."

Might be tough today against Danny Haren, who is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Brad Penny goes for the Dodgers.

                          Pick: Diamondbacks

                            Philadelphia at Detroit (-10, 178)

The question you have to ask yourself here is, "Did the Sixers beat the Pistons in Game 1 because they just got lucky, or was it a matter of the Pistons getting caught flat-footed?"

Sure, the Pistons have the experience, the big names, and the chalk. But maybe it's about time we admitted this Philadelphia team is a serious threat to win this series - or at least they’ve got serious value as 10-point underdogs.

Experience - the factor all the pundits were harping on before the beginning of the series – didn’t count for much in Game 1. In fact, the Pistons just looked old and tired as the Sixers beat them in transition, dominated them in the paint, outrebounded them, and showed more heart down the stretch. The Sixers came back from a halftime deficit to win 90-86 and they earned their fourth ATS win in five meetings against the Pistons this season. That doesn't sound like a team that just got lucky.

                            Pick: Sixers

                            Denver at L.A. Lakers (-7 1/2, 229)

Despite the apparent chasm between the No. 1 seed (Los Angeles) and the No. 8 seed (Denver), statistically, there wasn't much difference between them in Game 1. The Lakers shot better, the Nuggets were a bit better on the boards. The Lakers were much more accurate at the free-throw line and the Nuggets killed them in transition.

The end result was a 14-point Lakers win, but an adjustment in the Nuggets' lineup could make a big difference tonight. George Karl has decided to insert Linas Kleiza into the starting lineup to give his team another shooter and a little more bulk. That will probably force Kobe Bryant to switch off Allen Iverson to guard Kleiza, leaving Derek Fisher to guard Iverson.

There's also talk that the Nuggets will go to a zone defense in order to clog passing lanes and force the Lakers to shoot from the perimeter. The Lakers had 33 assists on 46 field goals in Game 1, which created a lot of high-percentage shots.

                            Pick: Nuggets
