Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte at New Jersey (-3, 209)

The Bobcats don't have the record to back it up, but they're really not a bad basketball team. They lose a little strength with Gerald Wallace on the sideline, but Jason Richardson and Emeka Okafor can pick up the slack in the frontcourt and Raymond Felton is one of the best young guards in the league. The best thing about the Bobcats, however, is that they've been steadily improving. They've won six of their last 10 games and of those loses, only one was by more than four points – and that was against the first-place Celtics.

    Pick: Bobcats

    Minnesota at Detroit (-7, 188 1/2)

Don't make the mistake of thinking the Pistons have nothing left to play for. They've locked up their second-place seed for the playoffs, but home-court advantage in the Finals is still on the line – and a win tonight could sew that up. Although Flip Saunders said earning that advantage "hasn't been our marching order," it's still enough reason to keep the starters in the game for significant minutes. With that in mind, seven points isn't a bad handicap for the Pistons considering they were laying 6 1/2 in Minneapolis in their previous meeting this year and they are 25-15 ATS at home.

    Pick: Pistons

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Montreal vs. Boston (+105, 5)

When this series began, Montreal opened as a -205 favorite in Game 1. And if there was one lock for a team to win a series, it was the No. 1 ranked Habs over the No. 8 Bruins in the East.

What a difference a couple of games makes.

Boston has taken Montreal to overtime in the last two games and gutsy forward Marc Savard has overcome a broken back to become the Bruins' hero by scoring the OT winning in Game 3. The series is now 2-1 Montreal and oddsmakers have set tonight's game as nearly a pick.

All the pressure is on the Canadiens now and you have to wonder how they'll handle it without captain Saku Koivu in the lineup.

      Pick: Boston +105

      Washington vs. Philadelphia (-130, 5 1/2)

NBC commentator Mike Milbury had an alleged slip of the tongue over the weekend and referred to Washington as the "Crapitals." He had to apologize after Caps supporters started calling for his head.

The truth is, Milbury shouldn't have needed to apologize. The Caps were out-hustled all over the ice in Game 2 and outshot 41-24 in a 2-0 loss. They have to match the Flyers' intensity if they expect to win this series and Alex Ovechkin and his club just didn't do it last game.

In terms of game play, both teams played a trap style, where they force the opposition wide coming out of the zone and pounce on them in the neutral zone. It limits scoring chances and that's a big reason why the score was so low. That, and Martin Biron played a great game between the pipes for the Flyers.

With oddsmakers keeping the total at 5 1/2 for Game 3, it might be a good opportunity to go low.

      Pick: under 5 1/2

      Anaheim vs. Dallas (-125, 5)

We mentioned this stat in our last Ice Picks that featured this series, but it's so good we have to say it again: No Stanley Cup winning team has won a playoff series in the following season after they won the Cup since the Avs did it in 2002.

The Avs won the Cup in 2001 and then made it to the Western Conference finals in 2002. No Stanley Cup defending team has been able to win a series since and now the Ducks trail the Stars 2-0 as this series heads back to Dallas.

Stick with the Stars for the rest of the series and you should come away with a profit or at least with little damage to your bankroll.

      Pick: Dallas -125

"When someone says you’re a 50-win team, that’s a compliment," Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy. "We’ve happy to get here." Whether or not that means the team's regular-season goals have been achieved remains to be seen. Orlando is cemented into the third spot in the Eastern Conference while Atlanta is eighth.

The Clips will also be sitting home from the playoffs for the 21st time in 24 years since they moved to Los Angeles, something that has left some of the their players feeling empty. “Gearing up for the playoffs is one of the best feelings that you can have as a player,” LA forward Tim Thomas said.

Hornets (-15, O/U 197): There are still a number of different playoff possibilities for New Orleans after the team stumbled to a 94-91 loss at Sacramento on Saturday. The Hornets lost their grip on the top seed to the Lakers and can could finish the regular season as low as fifth in the Western Conference. That makes this home finale against the Clippers even more important, as New Orleans visits Dallas on Wednesday in the last game of the season.

Hornets are 21-6 ATS in their last 27 games vs. Pacific Division.
Hornets are 21-8 ATS in their last 29 home games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in New Orleans' last 27 games vs. Pacific Division.

Sacramento Kings at Los Angeles Lakers [10:30 PM ET]

Kings: No team in the NBA has embraced the role of "spoiler" more than Sacramento. Head coach Reggie Theus deserves some credit for getting his team to play hard down the stretch despite being out of the playoff race. Leading scorer Kevin Martin missed the win over the Hornets with a knee injury, but John Salmons stepped up with 18 points. "I'm very proud," Theus said of his team. "I’m very impressed with our players who are taking pride in finishing the season strong."

Kings are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 19-7-1 in the last 27 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Ron Artest (20.5 ppg; thumb) is probable.
G Kevin Martin (23.7 ppg; knee) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 99

Lakers (-17.5, O/U 216): LA simply needs to win this game against the rival Kings to earn home-court advantage through the Western Conference Finals. The Lakers will be facing a hungry Sacramento team though that is coming off a 94-91 win over New Orleans on Saturday night. The Kings have been a bit of a nemesis and may try to antagonize Kobe Bryant, who will be suspended for the first game of the playoffs if he picks up 1 more technical foul.

Lakers are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Lakers are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 games vs. Pacific Division.

              Key Injuries - NONE

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians [7:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-115, O/U 9.5): Boston starter Tim Wakefield recorded his first win of the season last time out against the Tigers. Wakefield’s knucklers were touched for just 3 hits and 1 earned run over 5 innings of work at friendly Fenway. However, he has failed to record a road victory over his last 5 starts away from home. The veteran right-hander is 0-3 over those 5 outings, allowing 22 earned runs over 24+ innings. The Red Sox have gone 1-4 SU during that span.

Red Sox are 3-9 in their last 12 games as an underdog.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 7 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Indians: Cleveland starter Paul Byrd has been awful in his first 2 starts of the 2008 campaign. Byrd was a 15-game winner in ’07, but he is already 0-2 with an 11.05 ERA this season. Byrd was included in the Mitchell Report on performance-enhancing drugs and said: “it’s been a distraction.” The right-hander is 4-2 in 7 career starts against the Red Sox with a 4.12 ERA, allowing just 2 earned runs over 5 innings in last year's playoff start.

Indians are 22-8 in their last 30 home games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs [8:05 PM ET]

Reds (-115, O/U 11): Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang seems to have really taken on the role of being the staff's ace. Harang is 1-1 on the young season, but he is sporting a 2.14 ERA over 3 starts. The 29 year-old is proving that his 16-game win season in 2007 was no fluke. The right-hander is also 8-3 during his career with a 4.44 ERA against the Cubs. However, in his last trip to Wrigley he was touched up for 5 earned runs in 7 innings pitched.

Reds are 16-5 in Harang’s last 21 road starts.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Cubs: After saving 28 games last year working out of the Cubs bullpen, Ryan Dempster is now proving himself to be a reliable starter. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA, which includes a dominating performance of 1-hit ball against the Pirates on April 9th. Dempster said he’s been feeling great, but he did take a loss the last time he faced these Reds, allowing 4 runs in 1 inning.

Cubs are 6-2 in their last 8 games on grass.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals [8:15 PM ET]

Brewers: Dave Bush is off to a miserable start this season. He’s 0-2 with an ERA of 8.44. To make matters worse, Bush has only gone 5 1/3 innings in both starts, which doesn’t help out Milwaukee’s bullpen very much. Things probably won’t get any better for Bush on Tuesday. In 4 career starts against the Cardinals, he’s 1-3 with an ERA of 7.61. If history is any indicator, it will be another short outing for Bush tonight.

Brewers are 10-4 in their last 14 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2-1 in Bush's last 10 starts overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cardinals (-130, O/U 9): Braden Looper has been a pleasant surprise in St Louis’ rotation early on in the year. Looper is 2-0 with a very respectable 3.08 ERA. A relief pitcher for most of his career, Looper has 29 appearances against the Brewers with a 3-4 record. He also has 6 saves versus Milwaukee, but Brewers hitters are belting a healthy .310 when Looper is on the mound.

Cardinals are 14-4 in their last 18 games overall.
Cardinals are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres [10:10 PM ET]

Rockies: Colorado starter Ubaldo Jimenez was just a .500 pitcher last season, and he is once again stuck right at that mark on this young season. Jimenez is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 2 starts but has given up 9 walks in those contests. The 24 year-old right-hander has just 2 starts against these Padres (both last year) and was 1-0 with a 2.06 ERA.

Rockies are 2-8 in their last 10 games as an underdog.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Padres (-135, O/U 7.5): San Diego starter Randy Wolf will look to continue his strong pitching after allowing just 3 earned runs over his 12 innings pitched this season. Wolf was 9-6 last year, and the southpaw is 3-1 in 7 career starts against the Rockies with a 4.19 ERA.

Padres are 17-8 in their last 25 home games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 5

                    Toronto at Baltimore (+120, 9)

The Blue Jays keep looking better and better. Yesterday they couldn’t open this series with a win, but their All-Star outfielder Alex Rios didn’t start the game (although he did get a pinch-hit home run) and more importantly, recently-returned closer B.J. Ryan wasn’t utilized. With Ryan back in the bullpen to face his former team after recovering from Tommy John surgery, the Jays now have an intimidating one-two punch with Jeremy Accardo moving to the set-up role and Ryan reclaiming his job as closer. It’s also a load off the mind of Toronto’s young starters like Shaun Marcum, who won’t have to worry about working into the late innings anymore. Not that that's been a problem; Marcum has given up just four earned runs in his two starts this year and struck out 16 batters.

                    Pick: Blue Jays

Cincinnati at Chicago Cubs (-110, no total yet)

You have to wonder how long Ryan Dempster can keep this up. After two starts, the former closer has a mind-blowing 0.69 ERA with 10 strikeouts to four walks. This is the same guy who went 3-7 in his last season as a full-time starter and finished that year with a 6.63 ERA. But he was consistent as the Cubs’ closer last year and Lou Pinella considered promoting him to the starting lineup then. Even though Dempster had started only six games in his previous four years with the Cubs, he looks comfortable again in that role now and at 31 years-old he may have finally acquired that mental toughness he lacked in his earlier years.

Ironically, it was Kerry Wood, the converted starter and the Cubs’ new closer, who cost Demptster the win with a blown save, but aside from that game, Wood has been solid in the closing role. Cincinnati’s offense is struggling after getting swept in Pittsburgh and scoring only five runs in the three-game series.

                    Pick: Cubs
