Chicago at Cleveland (-7, 197)

The last time these teams met, the Bulls put on a display that is rarely glimpsed in the Windy City: tough defense. Even though LeBron James scored 39 points in the game, the Bulls clamped down in the second half and held James to 3-of-12 shooting to take a 107-96 win and cover.

But tonight's game will be a different story. The Cavs’ played with out Zydrunas Ilgauskas in the previous loss and without that presence in the paint, the Bulls were able to double and triple team LeBron and disrupt his rhythm enough to cause him to miss shots. Ilgauskas’ absence also meant Joakim Noah was able to collect 20 rebounds in the game. That won’t happen tonight. The Bulls will also most likely be without Drew Gooden, who is out with an abdominal strain.

The home team is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings between these teams and Chicago has not won on the road in more than a month.

L.A. Clippers at Sacramento (-11, 200)

This is just way too many points to lay on a team that is playing an opponent it has already lost to three times this season. Of course, you have to take into account that the Kings are at home, where they are 21-15 ATS this year. And you can’t ignore the absence of Clippers center Chris Kaman, who has scored 63 points and grabbed 44 rebounds in three games against the Kings this year.

But the oddsmakers were dead wrong about the Clippers last night when they dogged them in Seattle. L.A. beat the Sonics by 18 as 5 ½-point underdogs and proved that they aren’t all about Kaman. Obviously, Sacramento is a much tougher place to play than Seattle, but the Clippers have plenty of guys who can play in the frontcourt and this game just doesn’t smell like a blowout.

Houston at Portland (+6, 183)

At one point this season, things looked promising in Portland, but a pallor has come over the Rose City. Not only is the team all but eliminated from playoff contention, but now their All-Star guard is out of the lineup with a pulled groin and could be out for weeks. Without Roy running the offense, this team is struggling badly. The backcourt of Steve Blake and Martell Webster has nine turnovers in the last two games and the Blazers are 0-2 since Roy was injured. This tandem will most likely be overmatched against almost every Western Conference opponent and it will be no different against the Rockets’ guards, Tracy McGrady and Rafer Alston.

Not to keep on flogging a dead horse this early in the season, but oddsmakers are either overcompensating for the pitcher-friendly Petco Park, or they’re perfectly happy giving away money to over bettors.

Yesterday the books had a 7 ½-run total on the board with the flighty Wandy Rodriguez and the fading Greg Maddux on the hill. The Astros’ strong lineup topped the total by itself in a 9-6 win, while the two teams went out and combined for 26 hits.

Similar story today, with an 8-run total on the board - Shawn Chacon and Randy Wolf don’t exactly strike fear into over bettors’ hearts, even though Chacon has been good against San Diego in the past. Wolf, who makes his debut with the Padres, is coming off labrum surgery in September and had problems with his control all spring.

Kansas City at Detroit (-175, 8 ½)

Two games against the Kansas City Royals, two losses. Not exactly how the reloaded Detroit Tigers hoped to start the season.

With their potent lineup, you have to think they’ll bounce back sooner rather than later, but today they have a tough matchup against Zack Greinke (if he's on) and oddsmakers aren’t making a Tigers wager very tempting at this price.

You might want to take a gander at the over in this one, too. Detroit is already antsy after managing only three hits yesterday and the Tigers know how to get after Greinke, who was 0-2 with a 9.31 ERA against them last year. Plus, Jeremy Bonderman, who wants to unveil his new changeup today, was sick enough yesterday that the Tigers told him to go home to rest up.

The Stars currently sit in fifth place in the West, just behind the Ducks. They might not be too disappointed, however, if the sixth-place Avs jump them for that spot and Dallas ends up playing whoever finishes first in the Northwest in the first round.

We’re not saying Dallas will throw the game. But the Stars are without their top defenseman, Sergei Zubov, and they’re in a tailspin with just two wins in their last 10 games. Another loss might end up doing some good for them.

Edmonton vs. Vancouver (-200, 5)

The papers in Vancouver are ripping the Canucks right now. Roberto Luongo isn’t making the big save. Markus Naslund doesn’t have the leadership. The Canucks aren’t scoring.

That’s what happens when a Canadian team underachieves and sits one point out of playoff position in the Western Conference.

The Oilers are officially eliminated at three points out with just one game to play. However, there’s nothing they’d love to do more than knock a divisional rival out of the postseason in their last game of the year.
