    Six-pack for Thursday

-- Superior pitching duel in Philly, where Tim Redding beat Cole Hamels and the Phillies, 1-0. Nationals are 3-0 already.

-- Edwin Encanarcion hit a dramatic three-run homer in ninth inning off Lyon, giving Reds a 6-5 win over Arizona.

-- Brian Bannister allowed two baserunners in seven IP in a 4-0 win for Royals, their second in row at Detroit.

-- Lance Berkman hit three-run homer to key 4-run rally in 9th inning off Trevor Hoffman as Astros won 9-6 in San Diego.

-- My godson Tom Buckley is 2-0 pitching in high school ranks on Long Island; his Kellenberg HS team won 2-1 on Wednesday, with Tom shutting St John the Baptist out for six innings. The crafty lefty has allowed one run in 11 IP.

-- Toughest job in baseball might be bullpen catcher for the Marlins; poor guy works continuously from third inning on.

Thursday's List of 13: Facts, figures on baseball salaries

      13) Alex Rodriguez is earning $28M this season, all the Marlins combined are earning a total of $21,811,500.

      12) Bronx Bombers have nine guys earning $13M+; they also have eleven guys earning $500,000 or less, making you wonder what their team chemistry is like.

      11) Ten of the thirty big league teams have payrolls of $100M+ three others are over the $97M mark.

      10) Toronto has to be thinking they're playoff-ready, with their payroll at $97,793,900; problem is, they can't make the playoffs unless they beat out either Boston or Bronx. Good luck.

      9) Tampa Rays' payroll ($43,745,597) is 82% higher than it was last year, the highest increase in majors.

      8) Oakland's payroll ($47,967,126) is 40% lower than last year, the biggest payroll reduction in the majors.

      7) Put it this way: if you combined the payroll of A's and Texas Rangers ($67.7M), it wouldn't be as much as either the Angels or Mariners, who are both over the $117M mark.

      6) Mets already have $59,548,283 committed for 2011, while the Pirates have $0 committed, Oakland just $3M, Tampa $5.85M.

      5) Underpaid: Brandon Webb, $5.5M, John Maine $450,000.

      4) You watch how dreadful the Orioles are, then look at their payroll of $67M and you cringe-- bad team. Aubrey Huff ($8M) makes the most money of any Oriole.

      3) Minnesota let Torii Hunter, Johan Santana get away, but are paying Michael Cuddyer $24M for three years. Wow.

      2) Braves have 17 players who earn $460,000 or less.......Giants have 14 guys earning $405,000 or less. .

      1) Florida has total of $2,462,500 committed for next year, while Mets have $87,600,201- they're in same division. Obvious that Mets won't have to worry about the Marlins for a while. Kevin Gregg is the highest-paid Marlin, at $2.5M.

NIT Title Game: Massachusetts vs. Ohio State [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

UMass: The Minutemen have trailed by at least 9 points in each of their last 3 games before rallying back to win and now find themselves playing for the NIT title. They seem to be a team of destiny with 6 players from New York on their roster, 3 of whom are seniors. “We have come back a lot this year - what we have done leans on the shoulders of our seniors," UMass head coach Travis Ford said. "You look at those guys and they don’t want our season to end. They are the backbone of our team right now, and I give them a lot of the credit."

UMass is 10-1 SU & 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games overall.

Key Injuries- F Tony Gaffney (3 ppg; knee) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 75 (Side Play of the Day)

Ohio State (-3, O/U 149): The Buckeyes are hoping to finish off this season differently than they did last as they head into another postseason tournament title game. Ohio State lost to Florida in the 2007 national championship game, and freshmen Mike Conley Jr. and Greg Oden left for the NBA. But senior guard Jamar Butler remains, and he has played more games than anybody ever at the school. “This is still a tournament and a way to keep playing,” Butler said. “We have young guys stepping up and we’re playing the best we have all year.”

The OVER is 8-0 in Ohio State's last 8 Thursday games.
The OVER is 7-3 in Ohio State's last 10 neutral site games.

                Key Injuries- NONE

2008 NCAA Final Four - Alamodome (San Antonio, TX)

#1 UCLA vs. #1 Memphis [CBS | 6:07 PM ET]

UCLA: The Bruins are back in the Final Four for the third year in a row, and head coach Ben Howland believes this appearance will finally yield something that was missing in the previous 2 trips - a national title. “I think this is, by far, the best team in the last three years,” Howland said. UCLA lacked a big-time post player the last 2 years and has added the missing link in freshman phenom Kevin Love, who is looking to follow in the footsteps of Louisville's Pervis Ellison and Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony as notable first-year players who led their teams to a national championship on their virgin Final Four run.

UCLA is 7-7 ATS during its 14-game winning streak.
UCLA is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2 in UCLA's last 9 Saturday games.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 66

Memphis (-2, O/U 134.5): The Tigers are 1 win away from setting the NCAA record for most wins in a season despite ranking as one of the worst free-throw shooting teams. They hey have shot very well from the charity stripe in the last 2 games combined (56-of-71 for 79 percent), but they will need to do so again against a UCLA team that applies outstanding pressure defense. In fact, Xavier head coach Sean Miller came away very impressed after losing to the Bruins last Saturday. "They have sometimes four players on the court who are 6-7 or taller and they don’t foul," Miller said. "I’m telling you, if you play as hard as they do and have the size that they do and the strategy and that offensive team can’t put fouls on them, it is really, really hard to score."

Memphis is 4-7 ATS during its 11-game winning streak.
The OVER is 4-0 in Memphis' last 4 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 68

#1 Kansas vs. #1 North Carolina [CBS | 8:47 PM ET]

Kansas: The Jayhawks are in the Final Four for the first since 2003 when they lost to Syracuse in the national championship game. They will be looking to capture their first NCAA title in 20 years, which is ironically also when they won the Midwest Regional crown in Detroit. The key will be how Kansas handles North Carolina All-American center Tyler HanXXXough, who proved to be the difference against Louisville. The Jayhawks have slightly more depth inside and will be able to use up to 4 different players on HanXXXough in an effort to contain him.

Kansas is 7-4 ATS during its 11-game winning streak.
The UNDER is 4-0 in Kansas' last 4 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 78

North Carolina (-3, O/U 159.5): The Kansas questions can't help but be a distraction for Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams, who coached the opposition for 15 years before leaving for his alma mater. “If I was ever going to play Kansas again, this is the only way I would want it to happen,” Williams said. “In fact, I wish it would happen on Monday night (for the title) instead of Saturday.” Still, Williams is an emotional person, and sophomore Deon Thompson said his coach would "probably get irritated" during the week leading up to Saturday's game.

North Carolina is 8-7 ATS during its 15-game winning streak.
The OVER is 4-1 in North Carolina's last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 8-3 in North Carolina's last 11 non-conference games.

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Bulls: The playoffs are pretty much out of reach, so the Bulls are left to play for personal pride the final 8 games of the season. They put up a decent fight against Boston but couldn’t guard the 3-point line and lost Tuesday at the United Center. Chicago is just 2-5 SU in its last 7 games overall and allowing 107 ppg during that stretch. The Bulls crumbled in the fourth quarter last time at the Quicken Loans Center in losing to these Cavs 95-86 in March.

Bulls are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The OVER is 8-3 in Chicago's last 11 games vs. Eastern Conference.

Key Injuries- F Drew Gooden (14 ppg; abdominal) is questionable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Cavs (-7, O/U 197.5): Cleveland has been battling injuries all season long but is enjoying having Delonte West back and available. West had 18 points and a season-high 11 assists in the win against the 76ers over this past weekend. The Cavs are 10-1 SU at home in their last 11 games, and the only setback was a 1-point defeat to the Hornets. LeBron James went off for 37 points the last time he faced the Bulls team in this building.

Home team is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
Favorite is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-1 in Cleveland's last 9 home games.

Key Injuries- C Ben Wallace (5 ppg; back) is questionable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 102

Houston Rockets at Portland Trail Blazers [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Rockets (-5, O/U 183): A few days after they headed out on a 5-game road trip with a chance to move into first place with a win Sunday at San Antonio, the Rockets have losses to the Spurs and Kings and are now in sixth in the West. Houston struggled to slow down the Kings in its most recent loss while also going through some terrible offensive stretches. The Rockets defense has allowed 105 ppg in those defeats, and Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge lit them up for 22 points in the last meeting.

Rockets are 22-8-3 ATS in their last 33 Thursday games.
The OVER is 7-3 in Houston's last 10 games vs. Western Conference.

                    Key Injuries- NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 94

Blazers: Portland is virtually eliminated from playoff contention and has been playing without its leading scorer in Brandon Roy this entire week. Roy is expected to miss at least 2 more games with a groin injury, and the Blazers had a horrible 85-point offensive performance in their last home game against the Bobcats on Saturday. Portland hasn’t defeated the Rockets since the 2007 season.

Blazers are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 home games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

Key Injuries- G Brandon Roy (19.3 ppg; groin) is out.

                        Thursday, April 3

On April 3 in Baseball History...

1923 - Two Black Sox sue the White Sox. Swede Risberg and Happy Felsch seek $400,000 damages and $6,750 in back salary for conspiracy and injury to reputation in the aftermath of the scandalous 1919 World Series court case. Their suit will be unsuccessful.

1966 - University of Southern California pitcher Tom Seaver signs with the Mets for a reported $50,000 bonus. A selection of the Braves in the January free-agent draft, Seaver signs with Atlanta's Richmond farm club a month later, after the start of USC's baseball schedule. A ruling on the violation nets Richmond a $500 fine and forbids Atlanta from signing Seaver for three years. However, Seaver is also declared ineligible at the college level, so an unprecedented special draft is held. Three clubs willing to match Richmond's $40,000 contract — the Indians, Phillies, and Mets — participate. New York's name is drawn from a hat as the winner.

1985 - The Players' Association agrees to the owners' proposal to expand the 1985 League Championship Series from the best-of-five games to best-of-seven.

1987 - The Cubs trade veteran pitcher Dennis Eckersley and minor leaguer Dan Rohn to the A's for three minor leaguers.

1989 - The Mets win their 11th consecutive home opener, an 8-4 decision over St. Louis at Shea Stadium. They've now won on Opening Day in 18 of the last 20 seasons.
