Pick 'n' roll: Today’s NBA picks
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Cleveland at Charlotte (+3, 194 ½)

Betting on the Cavaliers has been a losing proposition recently, but cut the Cavs some slack. Not too many teams would be making money after facing a stretch of games against Orlando, Detroit, New Orleans, etc. so just because Cleveland is in the midst of a bad run (3-7 ATS) don’t go thinking this team is a five-star fade. The NBA season is all about ups and downs and a narrow win over Philadelphia on Sunday was a positive sign even though the three-point margin wasn’t enough to cover. After losing three straight games, the Cavs badly needed a win and it didn’t hurt that LeBron James was the guy who put the team on his shoulders at a time when they looked like they needed someone to lead the way. Expect LeBron to dominate this game like he did last time (33 points, 10 assists, 7 rebounds) his Cavaliers faced the Bobcats.

                    Pick: Cavaliers

                    Toronto at Atlanta (-2 ½, 204 ½)

This is the case of two teams moving in opposite directions. The Raptors showed some promise around the mid-point of the season and looked like they might be able to build on the moderate success of last season, but after an injury to Chris Bosh that kept the slick forward out for a 10-game stretch in which the Raps went 2-8 SU and ATS, the club hasn’t been able to regain their previous form, even with Bosh back on the roster. It also doesn’t help that there’s an ongoing power struggle at point guard that has relegated Jose Calderon to the bench in favor of T.J. Ford, even though Calderon was the catalyst for much of Toronto’s success.

Atlanta, on the other hand, has been racking up wins behind the strong play of a young lineup that’s starting to come together under the leadership of Mike Bibby. A hot streak that has garnered eight wins in Atlanta’s last 10 games also won’t hurt their confidence because consistency has been this team’s biggest problem all year.

                    Pick: Hawks

                    L.A. Clippers at Seattle (-4 ½, 202 ½)

This pick comes with a disclaimer: think carefully before betting on this game. If you put money down on it, then you might feel the need to watch it – and that would be downright painful.

The Clippers crapped out in nine of their last 10 games (5-5 ATS) and tonight, this already weak lineup could be significantly weaker without starters Chris Kaman and Cuttino Mobley, who are both listed as day-to-day after going down with injuries in Monday’s game.

Seattle has been even worse in recent games, if you can believe that. They’ve also lost nine of their last 10, but they covered the spread in only three of them. One of their prime movers, forward Chris Wilcox, has been injured for the last six games, which partly explains the Sonics’ struggles. The rest can be explained by the simple fact that they stink.

This is just the sixth time this year the Sonics have been favored in a game. They’re 5-1 in those games, but nonetheless, in a situation like this, you just have to take the points.

                    Pick: Clippers

                      Houston at San Diego (-150, 7 ½)

If you did your Houston Astros homework this spring, you read a lot about today’s starter, Wandy Rodriguez and with good reason. The guy’s pretty hard to figure out.

With a good fastball and a nasty curve, there’s no doubting his stuff. It’s just everything else that makes him a mystery. Last year he was dynamite at home in Minute Maid Park (6-3, 2.94 ERA), but was consistently hammered on the road (3-10, 6.37 ERA). Houston also worried about his maturity at times when he wasn’t getting calls and he continued to slide as the year went on.

If you listen to the Astros, the 29-year-old is ready to put all that behind him and appears more comfortable this season now that he has a better grasp on the English language and his role with the team. We’ll soon find out if that’s the case.

What you can count on from Houston is a dangerous lineup day in and day out. Petco Park is a tough place to play over the total, but Houston should be able to get at Greg Maddux a bit and we’ll believe in this “new” Wandy Rodriguez when we see it.

                      Pick: over

                      Arizona at Cincinnati (-110, 8 ½)

Decent value here for Danny Haren bettors in his debut with the Diamondbacks. Last year the 27-year-old was absolutely lights out for the A’s and he’s expected to duplicate that for an Arizona club that many are picking to finish at the top of NL West.

Haren’s critics say he benefited from Oakland’s pitcher-friendly confines and that’s probably true to some extent. He won’t have that luxury in Arizona or today in Cincinnati. Still, his stuff is electric when he’s on no matter where he’s toeing the rubber.

Meanwhile, Bronson Arroyo has had his moments. But good luck trying to get a good read on him from one start to the next. Word has it he had a good spring, for whatever that’s worth.

                      Pick: Arizona

                        Philadelphia vs. Pittsburgh (-160, 5 1/2)

This is one of those betting situations you hope for.

The last five meetings between the Pens and Flyers have gone over the total. What oddsmakers aren’t factoring in, however, is that the Pens have suddenly become one of the best defensive teams in hockey and have shifted their style of play.

Their last five games have gone under the total and they haven’t allowed 30 shots against in eight games. What’s less tangible is they aren’t allowing many decent scoring chances. Forwards have committed to back checking and responsible defensive play in their own end, they’re games have become more physical and they’re getting great goaltending from Marc-Andre Fleury.

Some books opened this total at six, so take advantage if you can.

                        Pick: under

Tampa Bay vs. Carolina (-230, 5 1/2) (TBA)

This game is a little bit of a big deal for the Canes. Win, and they remain in first place in the Southeast, good for the No. 3 playoff position. Lose, and they are at risk of allowing the Washington Capitals to leapfrog them, which could effectively put them out of the playoffs all together.

Tampa Bay’s season was over some time ago, but that didn’t stop the Bolts from beating Carolina 2-1 over the weekend.

The Canes will have to shake off a crucial 4-1 loss to the Caps last night. More bad news is they are 7-10 on the puckline on zero rest.

                        Pick: Tampa Bay +1 1/2 (-120)
