    Six-pack for Wednesday

Six top minor league prospects of the Philadelphia Phillies:

    6) Jason Jaramillo, C-- Oklahoma State product hit .271 LY in AAA; has gap power, decent defensive skills.

    5) Kyle Drabek, P-- Son of former Pirate pitcher Doug-- Kyle had Tommy John surgery, won't pitch until August, but still is seen as a top prospect, largely on bloodlines.

    4) Josh Outman, P-- Is 28-14, 2.96 in 56 minor league starts; batters have hit just .224 against him. Will start in AA in '08.

    3) Joe Savery, P-- Has been compared to Mark Mulder, but like most Rice products, has had medical issues. Pitched 26 innings in his pro debut, allowing just 22 hits.

    2) Adrian Cardenas, 2B-- Moving up quickly through system but is blocked by Chase Utley, so could be traded. Hit .300 in his first two pro seasons.

    1) Carlos Carrasco, P-- Has thrown 430 minor league innings, has yet to reach AAA; was 6-4, 4.86 in AA last year. Guy in my fantasy league has already gobbled him up.

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts.......

      13) First observation of baseball season is that umpires are on a mission to speed up games in between innings; rarely has a commercial break ended without the pitcher already starting in his windup, making the first pitch of the inning.

      12) Pedro Martinez felt his hamstring pop Tuesday night, so he is gone for an extended period. Mets are second-oldest team in baseball- they have lot of fragile guys.

      11) Excellent hire by Indiana, hiring Tom Crean-- the guy they should have signed up two years ago. I am curious how long it will take Crean to re-instate the two starters Dan Dakich threw off team yesterday. If he doesn't, Indiana will likely have zero returning starters next season, not a good situation.

      10) Robert Andino hit his first big league homer, a walk-off job in bottom of 10th inning, beating Matt Wise and the Mets. He wasn't even supposed to be in majors, making team because someone else got hurt on the last play of spring training.

      9) Jeff Kent has 538 career doubles, 27th on all-time list; he'll be an interesting case when his Hall of Fame candidacy comes up.

      8) Kevin O'Neill got kicked to the curb by Lute Olson; O'Neill was hired to be Olson's designated replacement down the road then was interim coach when Olson sat season out because of personal issues. Players, other coaches didn't like O'Neill too much, the team fell apart down stretch and now O'Neill is gone with Olson returning to the bench.

      7) When Xavier played West Virginia last week, a columnist in Cincinnati Enquirer called Bob Huggins most polarizing figure in history of Cincinnati sports, but he also noted that Bengals' WR Chad Johnson is catching up quickly. Marvin Lewis said again yesterday that Johnson won't be traded, so it looks as if Johnson will mope through another season. What a waste.

      6) What do Lee Smith, Goose Gossage, Paul Loduca, Alfonso Soriano have in common? They're only guys in major league history to make All-Star Game three years in a row, for three different teams.

      5) Broncos' Brandon Marshall will miss all Denver's offseason workouts after injuring a hand/arm during horseplay at a hotel in Florida. He cut an artery, a tendon, pretty serious stuff that will take until training camp to heal. All of which disrupts work designed to improved the Denver passing game.

      4) Underrated TV show: Without a Trace-- watch it a lot late at night on TNT. Good stuff.

      3) It looks weird seeing Andruw Jones in a Dodger uniform.

      2) Bad news for Barry Zito-- he threw 87 pitches Monday and Dodgers swung and missed exactly four times. Not good.

      1) As a fan, there are few things worse than rooting for a team whose fans get outnumbered by opponents' fans in their own home park. Such is the fate of the 2008 Florida Marlins.

2008 NCAA Final Four - Alamodome (San Antonio, TX)

#1 UCLA vs. #1 Memphis [CBS | 6:07 PM ET]

UCLA: The Bruins are back in the Final Four for the third year in a row, and head coach Ben Howland believes this appearance will finally yield something that was missing in the previous 2 trips - a national title. “I think this is, by far, the best team in the last three years,” Howland said. UCLA lacked a big-time post player the last 2 years and has added the missing link in freshman phenom Kevin Love, who is looking to follow in the footsteps of Louisville's Pervis Ellison and Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony as notable first-year players who led their teams to a national championship on their virgin Final Four run.

UCLA is 7-7 ATS during its 14-game winning streak.
UCLA is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2 in UCLA's last 9 Saturday games.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 66

Memphis (-2, O/U 134.5): The Tigers are 1 win away from setting the NCAA record for most wins in a season despite ranking as one of the worst free-throw shooting teams. They hey have shot very well from the charity stripe in the last 2 games combined (56-of-71 for 79 percent), but they will need to do so again against a UCLA team that applies outstanding pressure defense. In fact, Xavier head coach Sean Miller came away very impressed after losing to the Bruins last Saturday. "They have sometimes four players on the court who are 6-7 or taller and they don’t foul," Miller said. "I’m telling you, if you play as hard as they do and have the size that they do and the strategy and that offensive team can’t put fouls on them, it is really, really hard to score."

Memphis is 4-7 ATS during its 11-game winning streak.
The OVER is 4-0 in Memphis' last 4 games overall.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 68

#1 Kansas vs. #1 North Carolina [CBS | 8:47 PM ET]

Kansas: The Jayhawks are in the Final Four for the first since 2003 when they lost to Syracuse in the national championship game. They will be looking to capture their first NCAA title in 20 years, which is ironically also when they won the Midwest Regional crown in Detroit. The key will be how Kansas handles North Carolina All-American center Tyler HanXXXough, who proved to be the difference against Louisville. The Jayhawks have slightly more depth inside and will be able to use up to 4 different players on HanXXXough in an effort to contain him.

Kansas is 7-4 ATS during its 11-game winning streak.
The UNDER is 4-0 in Kansas' last 4 games overall.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 78

North Carolina (-3, O/U 159.5): The Kansas questions can't help but be a distraction for Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams, who coached the opposition for 15 years before leaving for his alma mater. “If I was ever going to play Kansas again, this is the only way I would want it to happen,” Williams said. “In fact, I wish it would happen on Monday night (for the title) instead of Saturday.” Still, Williams is an emotional person, and sophomore Deon Thompson said his coach would "probably get irritated" during the week leading up to Saturday's game.

North Carolina is 8-7 ATS during its 15-game winning streak.
The OVER is 4-1 in North Carolina's last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 8-3 in North Carolina's last 11 non-conference games.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 81

                  Wednesday, April 2

On April 2 in Baseball History...

1908 - After a two-year investigation, the Mills Commission, formed on the recommendation of Al Spalding and headed by the former N.L. president A. G. Mills, declares that baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown, New York, in 1839. Overwhelming evidence to the contrary is ignored, but the designation makes James Fenimore Cooper's town the most likely site for a Hall of Fame and museum when these establishments are conceived some 30 years later.

1972 - Mets manager Gil Hodges dies of a heart attack at West Palm Beach, Florida, two days shy of his 48th birthday. Yogi Berra is named manager.

1976 - The A's trade prospective free agents Reggie Jackson and Ken Holtzman, together with a minor league pitcher, to the Orioles for outfielder Don Baylor and pitchers Mike Torrez and Paul Mitchell.

1982 - In an exhibition game against the Padres, A's pitcher Steve McCatty steps to the plate wielding a 15-inch toy bat on the instructions of manager Billy Martin, who was upset that his club was not allowed to use a designated hitter in spring training games at N.L. parks. Home plate umpire Jim Quick refuses to let McCatty use the bat, and McCatty takes three called strikes.

1996 - Lumbering Tigers slugger Cecil Fielder steals the first base of his career in his 1,097th game. He'll steal another before season's end.

                        Wednesday NHL Gameday

The Philadelphia Flyers will be looking to improve their position in the Eastern standings when they play in Pittsburgh against the Pens on Wednesday. Here's your NHL Gameday …

Boston Bruins at New Jersey Devils, 7:00pm ET

The Bruins have showed some improvement over the past week; after losing most of their games over the first three weeks of March they have now picked up points in each of their past five outings. Boston is coming off a 2-1 overtime loss versus the Sabres on Sunday, with David Krejci scoring the team's only marker. Alex Auld stopped 28 shots.

New Jersey has been in a bit of a tailspin over the past couple of weeks, which allowed the Penguins to surge past them and take control of top spot in the Atlantic Division. The Devils are coming off a win against the Islanders on Tuesday night, and they last battled the Bruins way back on January 5. Boston held on for a 4-3 victory in that game.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes, 7:00pm ET

The only positive thing the Lightning can do in the last week of the regular season is improve their chances in the draft lottery - they're 'battling' the Thrashers and the Kings for last place overall in the NHL. Tampa Bay picked up yet another loss on Monday night, as they fell 2-0 at home to Atlanta. Mike Smith stopped 22 of 23 shots in that game.

A great month of March should've clinched the Southeast Division for the Hurricanes, but instead the hot play of the Capitals kept that divisional race alive into the final week of the regular season. Carolina fell 2-1 to the lowly Bolts when they met back on March 29, and they're coming off a disappointing 4-1 loss in their big game against Washington on Tuesday.

Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins, 7:30pm ET

The Flyers still aren't too comfortable in the Top 8 of the Eastern Conference standings, but they could do themselves a big favor by knocking off the rival Penguins on Wednesday night. Philadelphia is coming off a 4-3 win over the Islanders on Saturday, and they've picked up points in each of their past six games as they gun for the playoffs.

The Penguins now have Sidney Crosby back in the lineup, and they're battling the Canadiens for first place overall in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh last played Philadelphia on March 16, with Evgeni Malkin and Petr Sykora each scoring two goals in an easy 7-1 win. The Penguins are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Rangers on Monday.

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30pm ET

The Red Wings had no trouble at all winning the Central Division this season, and now they're just trying to stay healthy for next week's launch of the postseason. Detroit lost just three times in the month of March (once in overtime), and they're coming off a 1-0 blanking of the Predators on Sunday. Dominik Hasek picked up 22 saves in that victory.

The Blackhawks have managed to pick up points in five of their past six games (going 4-1-1 over that span), but that wasn't enough to push them into playoff contention in the last week of the regular season. Chicago got past Columbus 5-4 on Sunday, with Nikolai Khabibulin saving 31 of 35 shots and Patrick Kane scoring the shootout winner.
