Pick 'n' roll: Monday's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Atlanta at Memphis (3, 211)

Winning seven of their last nine games has helped the Atlanta Hawks gain sole possession of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but they realize there is still plenty of work to be done.

They look to get closer to their first playoff berth in nine years Monday night when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies.

With nine regular-season games remaining, the Hawks (33-40) hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. They are 2 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place New Jersey and three in front of 10th-place Indiana. Atlanta, which hasn't qualified for the playoffs since the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, is 7-2 in its last nine games but realizes the race is far from over.

"Confident? No, we can't feel confident," Hawks swingman Marvin Williams said. "We have to stay the course."

Williams helped the team's course Sunday, scoring 27 points, shooting 11-for-16 from the floor and grabbing 11 rebounds in a 114-109 win over New York.

"At this point and time, we have no room for error," said Hawks coach Mike Woodson after his team earned its third straight victory. "Every game is important as we continue to make our push towards the playoffs."

The remaining schedule could present a challenge, with five road games among the final nine. Atlanta is among the worst road teams in the conference with a 9-27 record, and its only defeats in the last nine overall games have come as the visitor.

The Hawks hope Joe Johnson can help them avoid a third consecutive road defeat after the guard scored 25 points and dished out 13 assists against the Knicks.

Johnson had 17 points in the last meeting with Memphis (19-54) on Dec. 8, helping the Hawks to an 86-78 home win - their third consecutive victory in the series.

The Grizzlies, owners of the third-worst record in the NBA and already eliminated from playoff contention, are looking to rebound from Saturday's 110-97 road loss to the last-place Los Angeles Clippers. The defeat came one night after a 114-111 victory over the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Lakers.

"It is a big letdown," Grizzlies forward Hakim Warrick said. "We got a big win on the road last night, and then came out with this effort tonight. It was very disappointing."

        Pick: Atlanta

        Denver at Phoenix (-5 1/2, 236)

Despite being 17 games over .500, the Denver Nuggets find themselves in danger of missing the playoffs in the loaded Western Conference. If they continue to play the way they have lately, however, they may be able to join what should be a formidable postseason field.

The Nuggets look to tie a season high with their sixth straight win as they hit the road to open a home-and-home series with the Phoenix Suns on Monday.

Denver (45-28) had been sitting in ninth place in the West behind Golden State since the end of February, but finally jumped past the Warriors on Saturday night. The Nuggets defeated Golden State 119-112 for their eighth straight home victory, moving them into the conference's final playoff spot - for now.

"Every game is important from here on out,'' said guard Allen Iverson, who had 14 points on just 4-of-20 shooting. "We understand even if we got this one, we've got to concentrate on getting the next one. We're not satisfied.''

The Nuggets were a half-game up on Golden State and a half-game back of Dallas entering play Sunday. With all three teams boasting at least 44 wins, it seems likely the NBA will have a 50-win team left out of the playoffs for the first time.

Denver is the NBA's third-highest scoring team at 109.7 points per game, but it's been even more impressive offensively in its last 14 games. The Nuggets are averaging 120.0 points in that span, more than enough to overcome the 110.2 per game they've been allowing.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Denver's offensive outburst is its balance. Beyond the team's top scorers, Iverson and Carmelo Anthony, Kenyon Martin is averaging 17.5 points over his last eight games, while reserve J.R. Smith has given the Nuggets 15.5 per game in that stretch.

Iverson is averaging 33.3 points in his last four contests against Phoenix (49-24), while Anthony is averaging 30.3 in his last eight versus the Suns.

Denver is 30-7 at home and has won 18 of its last 20 there. The Nuggets are 15-21 on the road, but have won their last three away from the Pepsi Center, all during their current five-game winning streak.

The Suns are one of five West teams within two games of the conference's top spot. They're returning home after a four-game trip that saw them drop the first two - losses that followed a seven-game winning streak - then rebound with wins in Philadelphia and New Jersey.

Amare Stoudemire had 33 points and 15 rebounds - his fourth 30-plus point effort in his last five games - in a 110-104 victory over the Nets on Saturday.

"This was very important," said Stoudemire, averaging 30.4 points in his last 10 games. "We are playing well, we are all jelling and showing great improvement."

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh vs. New York Rangers (-140, 5 1/2)

The Penguins and Rangers meet after a matinee affair yesterday afternoon in Pittsburgh, which the Pens won 3-1.

That game gave fans a little flavor of what playoff hockey will be like. There was a lot of hitting, tough defensive play and you could sense the nastiness on the ice and with the crowd. Neither team got a ton of scoring chances with everyone backchecking and taking care of defense first.

The Pens have been playing this way for several games now and they've vaulted to the top of the Eastern Conference. Their last four games have played under the total and it's likely their totals have remained high because Sidney Crosby and Marian Hossa are back in the lineup.

Tonight's game might play a little differently after a grind yesterday, but look to take advantage of high Pens totals for the final games of the season.

          Pick: under 5 1/2

          Atlanta vs. Tampa Bay (-160, 5 1/2)

And from the absolutely-nothing-to-play-for department, the Thrashers visit the Lighting tonight.

If you're trying to figure just which team cares less about this game, right now the edge has to go to the Thrash. They're coming off a 7-1 loss to Carolina Friday night, while the Lightning are coming off a tough 2-1 victory over the Canes on Saturday.

It's so tough to judge how teams are going to play with only a few games left and playoff hopes a distant dream. We'd recommend avoiding this game like a truck stop restroom, but if you need to play it, here's our shot in the dark.

          Pick: Atlanta
