Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday’s NBA picks
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Charlotte at L.A. Lakers (14 ½, 211)

Los Angeles’ big overtime win over rival Golden State on Tuesday left its mark. Coach Phil Jackson gave Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher and Lamar Odom Wednesday off to rest an assortment of bumps and bruises. But Bryant, sporting a nice shiner that he picked up from an errant elbow, let it slip that his swollen face wasn’t his only concern: he’s also nursing a sprained ankle.

"Puffy eye, bum ankle, I'm done, shelve me for five games," Bryant joked with Los Angeles reporters.

All three banged-up Lakers should play tonight against the lowly Bobcats, but you have to wonder if this could be a letdown spot after that war with Golden State, especially considering this kind of line on the board.

                      Pick: Bobcats

                      New Orleans at Cleveland (-2 ½, 190)

The Cavs will miss big Ben Wallace (back spasms) in the paint tonight with New Orleans’ David West-Chris Paul combo coming to town tonight.

West is averaging more than 31 points per game over his last three and Paul leads the team in scoring, assists, and steals.

"We're coming down the home stretch, and I'm a big believer in playing your best basketball late," West told reporters. "As a basketball team, we need to be playing our best basketball right now with 3 ½ weeks remaining in the season."

In the feel-good story department, Chris “The Birdman” Anderson made his return with the Hornets two years after he was suspended for violating the league’s drug policy and promptly blocked a shot less than a minute after he stepped on the floor.

Good vibes in New Orleans these days.

                      Pick: Hornets

                      Chicago at Philadelphia (-8, 201)

Whatever has gotten into the 76ers, Philadelphia bettors are begging for more.

Andre Iguodala scored 10 straight points in the fourth quarter to spur a double-digit comeback win over the Celtics on Monday as fat 9-point underdogs.

"It shows how hard we've worked to get back," Iguodala told reporters. "But I think we still have to have that mentality like we're a team that's still under .500 and still fighting. It's not over yet. We've gotten to a point where we want to be, which is over .500, but we still don't have an 'X' by our name" to signify a playoff berth.”

This Philly team is a long way from the one that won only five of its first 18 games; it’s peaking at the perfect time. Chicago? Not so much.

                      Pick: 76ers

Detroit Pistons at Toronto Raptors [7 PM ET]

Pistons (-1, O/U 184.5): Detroit played four of its last six games against teams in the tough Western Conference, but it is coming off a 110-105 overtime win against the Suns on Monday. The Pistons felt Monday's game was big because they avoided their second 3-game losing streak of the season. Richard Hamilton missed that victory, but is probable for this game. Hamilton led the Pistons with 22 points last time out against these Raptors.

The UNDER is 12-4 in Detroit's last 16 games against the Atlantic Division.

Key Injuries- G Richard Hamilton (18 ppg; hip) is probable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Raptors: Toronto is trying to avoid falling below .500 for the first time since November. The slumping Raptors have dropped back-to-back games and 7 of their last 8, including a 109-100 loss at home to Denver on Sunday. Chris Bosh said: “The thing that bothers me is at the end of games we're just too hesitant.” The Raptors have lost both meetings with Detroit this season by an average of 15 points.

Raptors are 28-9 ATS in their last 37 Wednesday games.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 92

New Orleans Hornets at Cleveland Cavaliers [7 PM ET]

Hornets: The Hornets are in their longest road trip of the season after a scheduled dominated by home games the last 2 1/2 months. New Orleans' longest road trip of the season has been 3 games, but team is now playing 6 straight on the road in 9 days, beginning on Tuesday. “It’s a tough trip, a long trip - but I truly believe that on the road we tend to focus even more,” Hornets head coach Byron Scott said. They have been playing just at a .500 level over their last 10 road games, getting blown out by double digits at Detroit and Houston earlier this month.

Hornets are 35-16-1 ATS in their last 52 Wednesday games.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 94

Cavs (-2, O/U 190): The playoffs are less than a month away, but the Cavaliers have suddenly forgotten how to win on the road. They dropped their fifth consecutive game away from home to the Bucks on Saturday. According to team insiders, the Cavs are simply not playing with any passion. On the bright side, Cleveland returns home where it has won 9 straight games, and LeBron James is averaging 35 ppg in March. James scored 35 points in a win against these Hornets last year at the Quicken Loans Arena.

Cavs are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games.

Key Injuries- C Ben Wallace (5 ppg; back) is questionable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 96

Phoenix Suns at Boston Celtics [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Suns: The Suns suffered a tough 110-105 OT loss to the Pistons on Monday. Despite that loss, it wasn’t all gloomy in the team's locker room afterward. “We’re going to try and start another streak,” said Amare Stoudemire. The loss snapped Phoenix's 7-game winning streak, but the team did hold the Pistons to 44 percent shooting to stay in the game throughout. Shaquille O’Neal had 12 points and 10 rebounds, his third double-double in 4 games. Shaq's contributions have pushed the Suns to average 116 ppg in their last 8 games.

The road team is 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 100

Celtics (-5, O/U 207.5): The Celtics are a generally healthy team right now, and for that they are thankful. However, they dropped their second consecutive game on Monday, using the same formula they did Saturday night in New Orleans. Another fourth-quarter collapse did them in at home against Philadelphia. Kevin Garnett said fatigue isn’t an issue after the long road trip, but he and his teammates must play better defense. During their recent 4-game winning streak, Boston allowed just 83 ppg compared to 104 in back-to-back losses.

Celtics are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 108 (Side Play of the Day)

Charlotte Bobcats at Los Angeles Lakers [10:30 PM ET]

Bobcats: Charlotte has dropped 6 of 7 following a franchise-best 5-game winning streak to dim the team's playoff chances. The Bobcats sit 5 games behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and are a surprising 3-4 all-time against the Lakers. One thing they haven't been able to do vs. LA is slow down Kobe Bryant, who is averaging 36.2 points per game in 6 career meetings.

Bobcats are 10-21-1 ATS in their last 32 road games.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 99

Lakers (-14.5, O/U 211): LA hasn't missed Pau Gasol much lately thanks to the improved play of Lamar Odom, who has turned in 7 straight double doubles dating back to the game in which Gasol was injured. Odom is coming off a 23-point, 21-rebound performance at Golden State on Monday, as he played all 53 minutes of an overtime win and scored the go-ahread basket with 9.1 seconds left.

Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries- C Pau Gasol (19 ppg; ankle) is doubtful.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 113

Mississippi at Virginia Tech [ESPN2 | 7:00 PM ET]

Mississippi: The Rebels were just 2-7 on the road this season compared to 15-2 at home, and that disparity could very well be the difference in this game. They are just 1 victory away from tying the second-most wins in school history and prefer a high-tempo game, which could be difficult against a Virginia Tech team that has limited its first 2 NIT opponents to 55.5 points per game.

Mississippi is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 5-1 in Mississippi's last 6 games overall.

                                Key Injuries- NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 67

Virginia Tech (-8, O/U 142): The Hokies continued their charge toward New York by beating UAB 75-49 on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals. They forced 16 turnovers and scored 23 points off them while limiting Blazers leading scorer Robert Vaden to just 9 points. Virginia Tech has been one of the hottest teams in the country against the spread, covering 9 straight games.

Virginia Tech is 9-0 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-3-1 in Virginia Tech's last 10 games overall.

                                Key Injuries- NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 75

Dayton at Ohio State [ESPN2 | 9:00 PM ET]

Dayton: The Flyers are very motivated to get to New York's Madison Square Garden for the NIT semifinals, and they are just 1 win away after winning 55-48 at Illinois State on Monday. “Anybody who plays the game wants to play in the mecca of basketball,” said Dayton sophomore Marcus Johnson. The Flyers beat ISU as a 6-point underdog and saw the total dip UNDER for the second time in as many games in the NIT.

Dayton is 4-1 SU & ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2 in Dayton's last 9 non-conference games.

                                Key Injuries- NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 57 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Ohio State (-8, O/U 126): The Buckeyes got a bit of a boost on Monday by playing at 52-year-old St. John Arena due to a Bruce Springsteen concert that was held at their usual home at Value City Arena. This enabled them to play in front of a near-capacity crowd of 13,276 and helped fuel a 24-4 run that led to a 73-56 win over Cal. Ohio State now returns to Value City Arena, where the team is 16-3 SU and 7-7-1 ATS this season.

The UNDER is 8-2 in Ohio State's last 10 non-conference games.
The UNDER is 10-4 in Ohio State's last 14 home games.

                                Key Injuries- NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 65
