    Six-pack for Saturday

Looking back at pre-season predictions in Blue Ribbon, the bible of college basketball magazines.......

-- Blue Ribbon correctly had Austin Peay, Siena, Davidson and Butler as mid-major teams winning their conference title.

-- Four teams tied for WAC title; Blue Ribbon had them 1-4 in their preseason prognosis.

-- American was picked to finish 5th in what was topsy-turvy Patriot League, but they wound up winning it, then gave all they had in tough loss to Tennessee Friday.

-- Portland State, Oral Roberts were both picked to finish 3rd in their leagues, but wound up winning regular season titles.

-- Belmont, Cornell and Mississippi Valley State were picked to finish second in their leagues; MVSU actually did worse but won the conference tourney-- Belmont won both in the Atlantic Sun, and Cornell went 14-0 in winning the Ivy.

-- Drake was #10 RPI team coming into tournament; back in November, they were picked 8th.....in the Missouri Valley.

Saturday's List of 13: Summing up second day of tournament

      13) The four games at St Pete Forum Friday featured two 5-12 games, and two 4-13 contests; strangely, the lower seed won all four games, setting up pair of 12-13 games on Sunday, the first in NCAAs since 2001, when Indiana St. played Gonzaga.

      12) In all, since the tournament went to seeding in '85, only six 12-13 games have been played, so having two in same tourney is pretty strange. Thats the kind of day/night Friday was.

      11) Western Kentucky blew huge lead to Drake, then drained a 25-footer at buzzer to end the Bulldogs' dream season, 100-99 in overtime, in a game where the two teams combined to shoot 30-70 on the 3-point line. Best game of the tournament so far.

      10) UConn always sleepswalk in its first round game, but when their point guard left with ankle injury, things got more dire for the Huskies, who eventually capped out an amazing afternoon by going home early with a 70-69 loss to San Diego, who only made the NCAAs because they won the WCC tournament on its home floor, after being down 17 in the semis to St Mary's.

      9) Siena did a tremendous defensive job, holding Vanderbilt to 4-20 from the arc with an extended zone that also curtailed the Commodores' backdoor cuts. Vandy was shooting 40.4% from the arc for the season, a tremendous mark, but were 4-20 here, and the Saints march to face Clems-- I mean, Villanova.......

8).....after trailing 36-18 with 5:01 left in first half, Villanova used poise and solid ballhandling to rally for a 75-69 win over rattled Clemson squad that quickly became unglued once Villanova got on a roll in the second half. Tigers' lack of poise, for a team that had just played Duke and Carolina tooth-and-nail in ACC tournament last weekend, was really disappointing.

      7) Was surprised to hear this is Louisville's highest seed in the tournament since 1994, when they also played Boise State first.

      6) One of officials at UConn-San Diego game, Gene Steratore, is also an NFL referee.

      5) I thought American totally outhustled Tennessee; early in game, Eagles had outrebounded Tennessee 16-6.

      4) Lookalikes: Davidson's Stephen Curry, poker pro Phil Ivey. Ivey couldn't drop 40 on Gonzaga, though.

      3) Butler made 15-28 from arc, Louisville 12-24, Davidson 11-22, Western Kentucky 14-28....Clemson made two of its last 22.

      2) Indiana's season from hell came to a merciful end, losing to Arkansas 86-72; under Dan Dakich, who was put into a terrible spot, Hoosiers went 3-4 (22-4 under Kelvin Sampson), allowed 74.6 ppg (62.8), shot 27.7% from arc (37.3%). With Gordon and White expected to both be gone next year (White is graduating Gordon is expected to bolt to NBA), good luck to whomever it is that inherits this mess.

      1) By way of information, in the previous six 12-13 games in the NCAA tournament, favorite won, covered five of them, with an average total in the six games of 161. Valparaiso in '88 was only 13 seed to upset the 4, then also upset the 12 seed.

Midwest Region - Qwest Center (Omaha, NE)

#11 Kansas State vs. #3 Wisconsin [CBS | 4:20 PM ET]

Kansas State: The Wildcats were one of the most impressive teams in Round 1, disposing of USC, 80-67. Kansas State didn’t always play up to its talent level during the season, but the team was focused and sharp versus the Trojans. Freshman phenom Michael Beasley and Bill Walker combined for 45 points, but a big key to the victory was the way the Wildcats crashed the boards and outrebounded the Trojans, 40-27. Rebounding will be a focal point again on Saturday against a Wisconsin squad that doesn’t allow its opponents to get many second chance opportunities.

Kansas State is 1-7 ATS in its last 8 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 63

Wisconsin (-5, O/U 131.5): It usually isn’t pretty, but the Badgers continue to roll along behind one of the stingiest defenses in the country. The Badgers only allowed teams to shoot 37.9 percent against them during the regular season and it was more of the same in the first round. Wisky held Cal-State Fullerton – a team that averaged 82.7 PPG during the year – to a season-low 56 points, 36.2 percent shooting and the Titans were stifled from 3-point range, managing to hit only 7 of their 21 attempts. They will look to do the same thing to Kansas State, a team that prefers to push the ball up the court.

Wisconsin is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 68

#8 UNLV vs. #1 Kansas [CBS | 6:50 PM ET]

UNLV: The Runnin' Rebels will try to make the Sweet 16 for the second year in a row and will face an even bigger challenge this year than last when they knocked off #2 seed Wisconsin. They lack the experience they had a year ago and depth could also be a factor against the more athletic Jayhawks. Also keep in mind that most of the fans in Omaha are there to see Kansas advance. UNLV did tie an NCAA Tournament record by holding Kent State to only 10 points in the first half of a 71-58 victory, but that type of defensive performance will be hard to duplicate.

UNLV is 6-2-1 ATS in its last 9 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 62

Kansas (-13, O/U 136): The Jayhawks have won 8 straight games and are 3-0 all-time against UNLV. They hit 12 3-pointers in Thursday's 85-61 rout of Portland State, one shy of the team's NCAA Tournament record. However, Kansas made just 7-of-15 free throws, the second-worst performance in the school's tourney history. Free throws may not be the difference in winning or losing this game, but they could make an impact on the spread.

The OVER is 7-3 in Kansas last 10 NCAA Tournamnet games.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 73

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West Region - Verizon Center (Washington, DC)

#7 West Virginia vs. #2 Duke [CBS | 2:10 PM ET]

West Virginia: The Mountaineers tied their season high for 3-pointers made with 11 in a 75-65 win over Arizona in the first round. “It was one of those nights when you thought it was going off and then you made it,” West Virginia's Darris Nichols said. “I remember shooting one shot, I thought it was off, it looked like an air ball, it still went in.” When they are connecting from beyond the arc, they are one of the toughest teams in the country to stop.

The OVER is 7-1 in West Virginia's last 8 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 74 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Duke (-3.5, O/U 147): The Blue Devils got a major scare in the first round before escaping with a 71-70 win over Belmont. They did improve to 5-1 all-time at the Verizon Center with that victory and will need to find a way to get DeMarcus Nelson going offensively. Nelson has made just 2-of-15 shots from 3-point range in the last 4 games combined, and his shooting might be needed if West Virginia stays hot.

Duke is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games against the Big East.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 77

#6 Purdue vs. #3 Xavier [CBS | 4:40 PM ET]

Purdue: The Boilermakers are coming off an impressive 90-79 win over Baylor in the first round, and the young players on the team believe they can play with anybody right now. "We like our draw," freshman Robbie Hummel said. "Obviously we would’ve liked to have been a higher seed, but as a 6, we’re playing teams that we think we can compete with." They will get a big test here from a veteran Xavier squad that showed a lot of mettle in rallying back from a 9-point halftime deficit to beat Georgia.

Purdue is 15-3-1 ATS in its last 19 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 64

Xavier (-3, O/U 129.5): The Musketeers got a huge wake-up call against Georgia in the first round, taking advantage of the fatigued Bulldogs who had won 4 games in 3 days last weekend. “You can’t help but think it was to our advantage, what they just went through,” Xavier coach Sean Miller said. “The longer the game went on, the more we were able to wear them down. And I think we all know part of that reason was the energy they had to use this past weekend." That won't be the case against Purdue.

The OVER is 6-2 in Xavier's last 8 neutral site games.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 66

                #9 Texas A&M vs. #1 UCLA [CBS | 9:15 PM ET]

Texas A&M: For a team that struggles to score at times, shooting poorly from the free-throw line certainly doesn’t help matters. The Aggies shot just 63.5 percent from the charity stripe during the regular season. A&M couldn’t even match its season average in its first-round win over BYU, hitting just 9- of-17 attempts (52.9 percent) from the line. In what figures to be a low-scoring, defensive battle against UCLA, poor free-throw shooting by the Aggies could be the difference in a close game.

Texas A&M is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 57

UCLA (-10.5, O/U 125): This could be a tough game for the Aggies on the offensive side of the ball. Texas A&M has had some anemic scoring outputs this season, not reaching 60 points in nine games. That has to have the Bruins defense licking its chops. UCLA only allowed 29 points to Mississippi Valley State in the first round, holding the Delta Devils to 19.7 percent shooting and an amazing 7 percent from behind the arc. If UCLA continues to play defense like that, A&M will be in for a long day.

The UNDER is 12-5 in UCLA's last 17 non-conference games.

Key Injuries- F Luc Richard MBah Moute (9 ppg; knee) is doubtful.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 68

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

East Region - Pepsi Center (Denver, CO)

#5 Notre Dame vs. #4 Washington State [CBS | 6:40 PM ET] Key Injuries-
Notre Dame: The key to this game will likely be guard Kyle McAlarney, who can get very hot from beyond the 3-point arc. McAlarney has scored in double figures in 5 straight games and 12 of 13. He connected on 3-of-7 shots from 3-point range in a 68-50 win over George Mason in the first round and could be the difference since Washington State dares the opposition to shoot from the perimeter.

Notre Dame is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 69 (Side Play of the Day)

Washington State (-2, O/U 133.5): The Cougars used stifling defense to beat Winthrop 71-40 in the first round, and they will try to dictate the tempo against Notre Dame as well. They are very patient in their offensive sets and play outstanding position defense, forcing opponents to make outside shots.

Washington State is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 Saturday games.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 65

#5 Michigan State vs. #4 Pittsburgh [CBS | 9:10 PM ET]

Michigan State: The Spartans were able to beat Temple 72-61 on Thursday despite a poor game from senior guard Drew Neitzel, who made just 2-of-11 shots and finished with only 5 points. They can't afford a similar performance against Pitt if they want to move on the Sweet 16.

Michigan State is 1-7 ATS in its last 8 Saturday games.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 65

Pitt (-2, O/U 131.5): The Panthers look to have a huge advantage in the frontcourt with DeJuan Blair and Sam Young, who played just 24 minutes in Thursday's win over Oral Roberts due to foul trouble. If they can both stay out of foul trouble here, they will look to run past the Spartans with point guard Levance Fields leading the break. “Our emphasis this year was to be a fast-break team,” Field said. “We didn’t always play that way because of the injuries. But I feel like we do a good job of pushing the tempo and getting easy shots.”

The OVER is 10-1 in Pitt's last 11 games overall.

#6 Marquette vs. #3 Stanford [CBS | 6:45 PM ET]

Marquette: The Golden Eagles struggled against the top Big East teams with quality big men this season with a 1-5 mark. They will face literally their biggest challenge of the season here against Stanford's Brook and Robin Lopez, two 7-footers who should be able to dominate inside.

Marquette is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games overall.

                Key Injuries- NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 65

Stanford (-3, O/U 133): Usually, Robin Lopez has done the most damage to opponents with his offense and rebounding. But brother Brook stepped up Thursday in a 77-53 win over Cornell, totaling 14 points and 5 rebounds while Brook battled foul trouble. The Lopez brothers will try to control the pace of this game and keep Marquette's quick guards out of the lane where they can be dangerous.

Stanford is 4-0 ATS on neutral courts this season.

                Key Injuries- NONE

The NCAA Tournament continues on Saturday with Thursday’s winners returning to the court to try and continue their March Madness run. Here’s a preview of one intriguing Saturday matchup from each of the four regions.

                  Midwest
                  Qwest Center Omaha, Omaha NE

                  UNLV (8) vs. Kansas (1) – 1:00 pm EDT

The Runnin’ Rebels knocked off No. 9 seed Kent State 71-58 as a 2-point underdog in the opening round. The Golden Flashes more or less beat themselves by playing horrible in the first half while scoring only 10 points. Joe Darger led UNLV with 18 points in the win, while Wink Adams added 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Jayhawks had no trouble with No. 16 seed Portland State in the opening round, as they routed the Vikings 85-61 as a huge 22-point favorite. Brandon Rush poured in 18 points to go along with six rebounds for Kansas, while Darrell Arthur had 17 points and seven rebounds.

The Jayhawks opened as a 13-point favorite against UNLV.

                  West Region
                  Verizon Center, Washington D.C.

                  Purdue (6) vs. Xavier (3) – 4:40 pm EDT

The Boilermakers cooked No. 11 Baylor 90-79 as a 3-point favorite on Thursday afternoon. Keaton Grant had a team-high 17 points and E’Twaun Moore was all over the floor for the Boilermakers with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The Musketeers had a little trouble with No. 14 seed Georgia in the first half, but took over when it counted to pull out a comfortable 73-61 win as a 9-point favorite. Josh Duncan was a force for Xavier with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Derrick Brown was also tough to stop with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Musketeers may be a mid-major school but they’re a No. 3 seed for a reason, and against Purdue they’re a 3-point favorite.

The Cougars completely dominated No. 13 seed Winthrop 71-40 as a 9.5-point favorite in their Tournament opener. Aron Baynes was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field while scoring a team-high 19 points for Washington State. Kyle Weaver and Robbie Cowgill each netted 14 points in the rout.

The Cougars are a 2.5-point favorite in this game.

Michigan State (5) vs. Pittsburgh (4) – 2:00 pm EDT

The Spartans stormed past No. 12 seed Temple 72-61 as a 6.5-point favorite in the opening round. Raymar Morgan led Michigan State with 15 points and Drew Naymick chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Panthers maintained the momentum they started in the Big East Tournament in an 82-63 win over No. 13 Oral Roberts as an 8-point favorite on Thursday. Speedy Levance Fields led Pitt with 23 points and seven assists, while Sam Young deposited 14 points.

This one could come down to the wire, as the Panthers were set as a very small 1.5-point favorite.

Celtics: Boston’s current road trip is already a success with 4 straight wins in five days, which included victories over the Spurs, Rockets, and Mavs. Ray Allen has returned to the lineup from an ankle injury and coach Doc Rivers said “We’re capable of anything.” As much of a success this road trip has been, team insiders say the team is “looking forward to returning home.”

Celtics are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games.

Key Injuries- G Tony Allen (7 ppg; back) is OUT

The Hornets have held their opponents to the low teens or lower in fourth-quarter points: Rockets (10), Bulls (13), and Spurs (8). New Orleans has held 13 opponents to 18 points or fewer after doing that just six times all last season. “We have to commit ourselves on the defensive end, especially against our upcoming opponents” said coach Byron Scott.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Milwaukee Bucks [NBA | 8:30 PM ET]

Cavs (-5, O/U 200): Cleveland loves its home cooking, but will now have to take the show on the road tonight. LeBron James has been on the constant on the team averaging 35 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists in nine games during this month. He has scored 30 or more points in seven of the nine games as well. However, the Cavs have lost 4 straight road games by an average of 8 ppg while allowing 104 points.

Cavs are 18-9 ATS against good offensive teams this season.

Bucks have played the Cavaliers tough this season, winning two of three meetings including a 111-107 victory at Cleveland. Rockets: The Rockets offense started to slide long before the streak ended. Houston was able to overcome those struggles against the Bobcats and Hawks, but now its offense has become even more stagnant. In the past five games, they had their fewest points in a first half (32 at Atlanta) this season, and matched their fewest in a second half (25 at New Orleans) ever. Tracy McGrady said he is “not worried” about the recent losses, but Rafer Alston was just 4-of-13 on Wednesday and has picked up technical fouls just this week.

Rockets are 20-7 ATS against poor defensive teams over the last 2 seasons.

Suns (-6.5, O/U 203.5): The Suns have now won six games in a row, including back-to-back road victories. They are 24 games over .500 for the first time all year and have pulled even in the win column with the top teams in the West. However Phoenix committed a season-high 27 turnovers and Steve Nash said his team was “tired” in their latest victory. The Suns have had 2 days off to prepare for the Rockets and are averaging 105 ppg against them on the season.
