        Tuesday, March 18

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday’s NBA picks
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        L.A. Lakers at Dallas (-5 ½, 205 ½)

These are not good times for Los Angeles basketball fans. Just when everything was going right for the Lakers, Pau Gasol went down with a sprained ankle and now this just isn’t the same team. They’ve lost their last two games, mainly because without Gasol in the lineup, defenders can focus all their attention on Kobe Bryant. The guard looked rattled on the weekend when he went 11-of-33 from the field and 0-4 from long range in a loss to Houston.

Dallas is playing with renewed confidence thanks to its current five-game winning streak. The competition hasn’t exactly been stellar but they’ve managed to cover the spread in all five despite double-digit handicaps in every game. The Lakers haven’t won in Dallas since 2005.

        Pick: Dallas

Golden State at Sacramento (+2, 229)

It might be tempting to call the Warriors the best looking road favorite on today’s board, but don’t be fooled. They haven’t lost to Sacramento this season, but in their last meeting, they played to a 105-102 win, which wasn’t enough to cover as the seven-point favorite. Sacramento isn’t a sexy team but they’re a cash cow against winning teams. They have an impressive 11-4 ATS record at home against teams with a better than .500 record. You also can’t ignore their 19-13 ATS overall record at home and a 15-5 ATS record as an underdog.

        Pick: Sacramento

        Phoenix at Portland (+3 ½, 209)

It might be a coincidence that Phoenix is 23-15-1 ATS on one day’s rest and just 3-10-1 on two or more days’ rest, but that trend is significant enough to pay attention to here. Both teams have been off since Saturday, which works in Portland’s favor for more reasons than one. The Suns’ 127-99 win over Sacramento on Saturday was their fourth straight, but the time off will probably spoil the momentum built by the streak. Portland, meanwhile, has covered in seven of its last 10 games.

        Pick: Portland

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets

          Atlanta at Philadelphia (-200, 5 1/2)

The struggling Philadelphia Flyers are desperate to end a second-half slump, and a visit from the Atlanta Thrashers might be coming at the perfect time.

The Flyers will try to continue their dominance of the Thrashers when the teams meet Tuesday at the Wachovia Center.

Philadelphia (35-28-10) missed the playoffs and posted the worst record in franchise history last season, but was within three points of the Eastern Conference lead on Feb. 5. Since then, however, the Flyers have dropped to eighth in the conference, just one point ahead of Buffalo.

Philadelphia lost its fourth straight on Sunday, 7-1 at Pittsburgh. Still, the Flyers' current losing streak is far from their longest of the season - they lost a franchise-record 10 in a row from Feb. 6-23.

"It's in our hands right now," forward Mike Richards said. "It's better to be in this situation than to be chasing from behind. We control our destiny, but we better start winning games and playing a whole lot better."

Coach John Stevens had all of his players' stalls moved around at their practice facility on Monday to help his team shake its current funk. But a game against the Thrashers (31-35-8) might be more effective - the Flyers have won nine in a row against Atlanta, earning a point in the last 13 meetings.

Philadelphia is 24-3-1 with three ties all-time against Atlanta, including 12-1-1 with two ties at home. The Thrashers' only regulation win in Philadelphia was a 7-4 victory on Jan. 13, 2003.

"We've been on great stretches, and we've been on losing stretches," Richards told the Flyers' official team Web site. "Right now, we know it's time to come together as a team and put together a good stretch. We know that we can do it, we just have to find it."

If the Flyers do end up missing the playoffs they'll have no one but themselves to blame. After facing the Thrashers, they close the regular season with eight division games.

However, Philadelphia will likely be without two key players during the stretch run. Center R.J. Umberger, who has 12 goals and 49 points, sprained his left knee against the Penguins and is out at least two weeks, while defenseman Derian Hatcher has a broken right leg and won't play again the rest of the regular season.

Antero Niittymaki will get the start against Atlanta after taking over for Martin Biron on Sunday. Biron gave up three goals on eight shots, while Niittymaki stopped 24 of 28 shots.

          Pick: Over

          Calgary at Columbus (+110, 5 1/2)

The Columbus Blue Jackets are in the midst of the best season in franchise history - and they'd love to cap it off with an unlikely trip to the playoffs.

The Blue Jackets will be trying to make up ground in the Western Conference race on Tuesday when they host the Calgary Flames.

Columbus (32-29-11) beat the NHL-leading Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Sunday, giving it 75 points - one more than its previous franchise record posted in 2005-06. The Blue Jackets, in their seventh season in the NHL, still have 10 games left to build on the record.

However, Columbus is more focused on earning its first playoff berth. The Blue Jackets are tied with Chicago for 12th place in the West, and would need a remarkable run to end their postseason drought.

"We knew what was expected of us," said Manny Malhotra, who had two goals and a career-high three points against the Red Wings. "With our season on the line right now, we're going to have to play like that through the stretch."

Fredrik Norrena made his first start since Feb. 13 and had a career-high 43 saves. No. 1 goalie Pascal Leclaire, replaced by Norrena after yielding three goals on 19 shots in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Blackhawks, did not play after being hit in the head by a shot during warmups.

The mishap will keep Leclaire out at least two games with a head injury, and Norrena will start Tuesday. The club also recalled Dan LaCosta from its American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse on Monday to fill in for Leclaire.

The win was the Blue Jackets' second in six games overall and their second in three home games after dropping seven straight there. However, Columbus managed to beat Detroit for the third straight time.

"I've said this over and over, it's kind of been our gift and our curse through the whole year is that against top teams in the league, we always bring our 'A' performance, and we play really hard and we play the style that we're expected to play," Malhotra said. "When we're playing against teams that we're battling for points or perhaps are below us in the standings, that go get 'em-type attitude isn't quite there."

The Blue Jackets will get another chance against a team currently in playoff position when they face the Flames (37-25-10), who are battling Minnesota, Colorado and Vancouver for the Northwest Division lead.

          Pick: Flames
