    Six-pack for Tuesday

Thanks to ESPN's Pat Forde, here are some facts concerning this week's NCAA tournament you might find useful.........

-- Cal State Fullerton, UMBC, Portland State, Tex-Arlington are all in the NCAAs for the first time. Good for them. Enjoy it while you can, because...........

-- ............its been seven years since a team with an RPI under 70 won a tournament game; Winthrop's RPI was 70 when it upset Notre Dame in the first round last year.

-- Three top 25 teams have freshman as leading scorers, and they are Indiana-Purdue-UCLA.

-- Seven of last nine national champs had an RPI in top 10.

-- There are 13 D-I hoop programs in Tennessee; five made the NCAA's-- none of the nine in Illinois made it.

-- Georgia won four games in four days, salvaging a season during which, at one point, they went 37 days with one win.

Tuesday's List of 13: Baseball knowledge for a Tuesday........

Some baseball knowledge from the fine people at Baseball Prospectus, a must-buy if you like fantasy baseball; it has writeups on just about every player in the major leagues.

      13) Ichiro Suzuki signed a 5-year, $90M contract last July; he’ll be 38 when the contract ends. Numbers people are projecting a downslide for Ichiro—I’ll believe it when I see it.

      12) Eric Chavez—Is making $34M over next three years; his career comparables are Wayne Gross, Corey Koskie and Sid Bream. Just freakin’ great. 34 freakin' million dollars.

      11) Kaz Matsui—Hit .330 at Coors, .249 on road; Minute Maid Park is small, but if Kaz busts in Houston like he did in New York, its bad news for the Astros and my fantasy team.

      10) Roy Halladay—Made 63 starts the last two years; is 32-12, with WHIPs of 1.10, 1.24. Wow. Throws lot of ground balls; Jays have to keep strong infield behind him.

      9) Josh Hamilton—Had .637 slugging percentage vs. righty pitchers; I’m wondering why Reds traded him, unless they fear an implosion off the field.

      8) Adam Dunn—Last three years, hit 40-40-40 homers, walked 114-112-101 times, scored 307 runs, knocked in 299 runners, yet he still has good chance of being traded. Why?

      7) Lance Berkman—Had one double, six homers in his first 189 AB last year, wound up with 34 HR, 102 RBI, 24 doubles- was tough from June on. Strikeouts have gone up last three years.

      6) Carlos Delgado—Making $20M this year, $16M next, with a $4M buyout after that; Will be 36 in June, looks like he has hard time behind over for low throws from infielders. Proceed with caution.

      5) Rocco Baldelli—Apparently, "Baldelli" is Italian for injured (they said it, not me).

      4) Chase Utley—Plate appearances last three years: 628-739-613; hit over .300 vs. lefties last two years. Has 39-40-48 doubles last three years. I could on longer, but you get the idea—he’s really good.

      3) Chris Carter—Is 21, 6-4, 210; hit 25 homers in A ball last year, then got traded twice in offseason, which can’t feel too good. Arizona traded two different guys named Chris Carter last winter.

      2) Jeremy Hermida—Hit .339 after July 1 LY, missing only one game; had 18 homers, .369 OB%, and is only 24.

      1) Chris Capuano- -On May 7, was 5-0, 2.31; he made 22 starts the rest of the season, and Milwaukee lost every one of them. You don’t see stuff like that happen every day.

            NCAA Play-in game
Coppin State was 0-8 in MEAC at one time this season, got hot down stretch, won its four conference tourney games by total of six points, and is first 20-loss team (14-20) in NCAAs; they play in 2nd-worst league in country, while Mt St Mary's plays in 22nd-ranked league (out of 31). Coppin is 18th in country in forcing turnovers; they played on this court Dec 15, losing by 32 to Dayton. Mount beat Winthrop, Loyola MD; they've won eight of their last nine games.

            NIT
Investing in NIT, CBI games is not advised; no one wants to play in these games, travel is sub-standard, enthusiasm for the home team won't be the same; people are frontrunners. So with that in mind, here is a little bit of info on these games.......

UMass was on 6-game win streak, had 17-point lead at half vs Charlotte in A-14 tourney, then blew game, and are hosting a SF Austin team that won Southland regular season title, then got upset in their tournament. SFA has an RPI of 64, is 7-4 vs teams in top 200. UMass is 20-5 vs teams with RPI under 50- they play 4th-fastest games, SFA plays 4th-slowest games.

NC-Asheville has 7-foot-7 center who doesn't start; they won regular season title in Big South- their RPI is 143. Ohio State is 13-3 against teams ranked below RPI of 100; Asheville is 0-3 vs teams in top 100. Both teams play slower-pace games. Ohio St beat Asheville's league rival VMI by 33 in November.

What are the odds Syracuse leaves NY State again this year? Nah, I didn't think so either. Orange is 4-3-1 vs spread as home favorite in non-Big East games. Robert Morris scores 32.7% of its points from behind arc, which is good for them, since a 2-3 zone is what Syracuse likes to play. Travel isn't too bad from western PA to Syracuse.

Oklahoma State won five games in row to get close to bubble, then lost three of last four games- they're 9-5 outside of Big 12. Southern Illinois scored 49 points in losing its last two games; they went 6-6 out of Missouri Valley, despite being favored in 11 of the 12 games. OSU is 4-0-1 in last five games as the dog.

Akron won six of its last eight games, losing in MAC title tilt; they're 4-3 vs spread as a dog, 10-4 SU outside of MAC. Zips score 35.2% of their points beyind arc. Florida State is 11-4 in non-ACC games- they won five of last seven games, losing a pair to UNC. Seminoles covered two of last nine as a favorite.

Maryland is 10-5 outside of ACC, but lost last three games and five of last six- they covered six of last nine as the dog. Terps beat only Big 11 team they faced (Illinois, 69-61). Minnesota is OK playing in NIT, I think- they won two games in Big 11, are 7-3 vs spread in last 10 tries as favorite. Gophers lost 75-61 at Florida State in their only game vs an ACC opponent.

Rhode Island fell apart in second half of season, losing seven of last eight games; Bluejays are 12-1 outside of MVC, and if any home crowd will support their team in NIT, it will be fans of Omaha, who also have NCAAs in town this week. Rams are 1-6 against teams with RPI of 50 or better- Bluejays have RPI of 46. Creighton is 19-4 against teams with RPI lower than 50.

Alabama State is 17-10, won SWAC regular season, but teams in SWAC went 8-86 out of conference, worst record in country Arizona State beat Coppin State, the MEAC tourney winner, in November by 17- they're 7-4 as a favorite this season. Laying 18 points in first round NIT game isn't advised; backing team from league that is 8-86 out of conference is always ill-advised.

            CBI Tournament
Apparently, there is another new post-season tournament this spring; I'm not sure why, but we'll do what we can with it. The gimmick to this tournament is that finals are best-of-3.

Virginia is 4-3 in last seven games, has senior guard who might want to prolong his career (Singletary); they lost 108-70 to the only A-14 team they played (Xavier)- they're 4-1 as favorite in non-ACC games. Richmond lost three of last four games, with losses by 25-14 in last two- they run the Peinceton offense, so want slower pace, while Virginia will want fast pace.

Cornell went 14-0 in Ivy League, but lost 102-89 at Ohio back in November; Brown lost twice to Big Red, by 11-9 points. Brown won 74-55 at Eastern Michigan of MAC- they're 3-4 against the spread as non-Ivy underdog. Bobcats are 5-2 as favorite in its non-MAC games. Ohio lost five of its last seven games.

Rider has NBA player in Thompson; not sure if they're healed up after being 1.5 starters down in MAAC final; Broncs split a pair vs CAA teams, beating Delaware 76-71, losing at Drexel by 73-66 score. Old Dominion beat Iona of MAAC by 11- after a five-game win streak, Monarchs lost last two games, to fall to this tournament- they're 6-10 vs spread in last 16 as a favorite.

Health of Washington's star Brockman a key here; he missed loss to Cal in Pac-10 tourney last Wednesday. Huskies are 1-4 in last five games; they're 6-6-1 vs spread as favorite this year. Valparaiso won four of last five games; they're 1-4-1 vs spread in their last six games as underdog. Fairly long trip for Valpo, from Indiana to Seattle. Big class difference as far as leagues, with Pac-10 ranked #2, Horizon League #11.

              March Madness Regional Preview

Tyler Hans-brough and the North Carolina Tar Heels are the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament this year, and they are also big favorites to capture the East region.

Vegas oddsmakers have pegged North Carolina as the 4/5 favorite to dispatch all the other teams in their quarter of the bracket and reach the Final Four in San Antonio next month. The Tar Heels got past the Clemson Tigers 86-81 on Sunday in the ACC's championship game, with Hans-brough picking up 18 points and 11 rebounds that day.

Tennessee got stuck with the No. 2 seed in the East region, which means they'll have to get past North Carolina to reach the Final Four. The Volunteers have been pegged at 3/1 odds to win the region, which is the same line given to No. 3 Louisville. Fourth-seeded Washington and fifth-seeded Notre Dame are both listed back at 15/1 odds.

No. 7 Butler is at 60/1 odds to win the East, with No. 8 Indiana at 75/1, and No. 6 Oklahoma behind both of those teams at 100/1. No. 11 Saint Joseph's is also listed at 100/1 odds to reach the Final Four, with the other teams in the East at 150/1 or higher.

The Duke Blue Devils were beaten 78-74 by Clemson in the semifinals of the ACC tournament, and they'll enter the Big Dance as the No. 2 seed in the West region. Vegas oddsmakers have pegged Duke at 5/2 odds to advance to the Final Four this year, while top-seeded UCLA is listed at 4/5 odds to punch their ticket to San Antonio.

Xavier is the No. 3 seed in the West, but they're back at 18/1 odds to win that region. That puts them behind No. 4 UConn, who are at 4/1 odds. No. 7 West Virginia is listed at 20/1 odds, with No. 6 Purdue at 35/1, and No. 5 Drake farther back at 60/1. The rest of the region is at 75/1 odds or higher, including No. 8 BYU who are longshots at 150/1.

The Memphis Tigers handily won the Conference USA tournament on Saturday, blasting Tulsa 77-51 in the championship game. That earned Memphis the No. 1 seed in the South region, and they're listed as 6/5 favorites to reach the Final Four. No. 2 Texas, who fell to Kansas in the Big 12 title game, is second on that Vegas chart at 5/2.

Stanford couldn't hold off UCLA in the Pac-10 championship game, but they're still the No. 3 seed in the South with 3/1 odds to win the region. No. 4 Pittsburgh and No. 5 Michigan State are both listed at 12/1 odds, with No. 6 Marquette at 15/1 odds, and No. 7 Miami-Florida farther back at 60/1 odds. The South longshots begin with No. 8 Mississippi State at 100/1, with every other team in the region at 150/1 odds or higher.

Kansas' win in the Big 12 championship contest gave them the No. 1 seed in the Midwest region for this year's tournament. The Jayhawks have been listed by the Vegas oddsmakers as the 10/11 favorites to win that region. No. 2 Georgetown is second on that list at 2/1, with No. 3 Wisconsin at 10/1, and No. 5 Clemson sitting just back at 12/1.

No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 6 USC are pegged at 18/1 odds to win the Midwest region, with No. 10 Davidson (50/1) and No. 11 Kansas State (60/1) headlining the longshots. Also, No. 7 Gonzaga is getting long 75/1 odds for this year's edition of March Madness.

Overall, UCLA is pegged as the 9/2 Vegas favorite to win the NCAA Tournament, with Kansas and North Carolina both at 5/1, and Memphis at 6/1 odds. From there it's Texas at 10/1, with Tennessee and Georgetown at 12/1, and both Duke and Louisville at 15/1.

March Madness gets underway on Tuesday night with the annual Play-In Game. This year's opening matchup sees the Coppin State Eagles taking on the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers. Coppin State went just 16-20 this year, but they managed to win the MEAC tournament. Mount St. Mary's (18-14) was the Northeast Conference champion, and they're pegged as 7-point favorites to win on Tuesday night (with the total at 126.5).

Denver Nuggets at Detroit Pistons [7:30 PM ET]

Nuggets: The Nuggets set NBA season highs for points in a half with 84 and points in a game in a 168-116 rout of the Seattle SuperSonics on Sunday night. They shared the ball and hit open shots, and for the second straight game the starters were on the bench in the fourth quarter. Head coach George Karl said his team will do their best to continue their strong play against the defensive-minded Pistons.

Nuggets are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games against the Central Division.

                    Key Injuries- NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pistons (-6, O/U 208.5): Detroit bounced back from a loss to the 76ers by beating New Orleans after head coach Flip Saunders said his team played “too cool” against Philly. The Pistons have now won 2 straight and defeated 2 of the top teams in the West (Spurs and Hornets) by a combined 25 points. Chauncey Billups is averaging 20 ppg over his last 12 games, and Richard Hamilton had one of his best offensive games on Friday with 25 points.

Pistons are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games against the Northwest Division.

Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks [8:30 PM ET]

Lakers: The Lakers are in the middle of their most trying road stretch left of the season and have started 0-2 – both games played without Pau Gasol due to an ankle injury. Kobe Bryant said he will be more aggressive on offense, and he is averaging 30 ppg in those games without Gasol. However, it hasn’t been enough as Los Angeles has been outscored by a combined 11 points.

Lakers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Tuesday games.

Key Injuries- C Pau Gasol (19 ppg; ankle) is OUT.

Mavs (-5.5, O/U 205.5): The Mavericks are fresh off a 98-73 thrashing of the Heat and have won 5 straight overall. Now Dallas hosts 3 of the NBA's top clubs - the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston and San Antonio - in the next seven days. Dirk Nowitzki said “we should be ready” while head coach Avery Johnson agrees in saying: “I wanted us to get some momentum.” This looks to be the case, as Dallas has won its last 5 by an average of 24 points..

Mavs are 6-14-3 ATS in their last 23 games against the Pacific Division.

Boston Celtics at Houston Rockets [TNT | 9:30 PM ET]

Celtics: The Celtics own the NBA’s best record at 53-13 and has bounced back nicely after the Jazz ended their 10-game winning streak. Ray Allen has been dealing with a heel injury, but he wasn’t missed much in road wins at Milwaukee and San Antonio. The Celtics held the Bucks to 34 percent shooting, and they were able to overcome a 22-point deficit against the defending NBA champs on Monday.

Celtics are 41-16-1 ATS in their last 58 road games.

Key Injuries- G Ray Allen (18 ppg; ankle) is questionable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rockets (NA): The Rockets have won 26 of their last 27 games and 31 of their last 34. They've won 15 straight at the Toyota Center and 10 in a row since Yao went out with a broken foot. Even more impressive is that they're won 11 of their last 13 games by double digits. Houston defeated the Lakers on Sunday afternoon, even with Tracy McGrady scoring just 11 points. Rafer Alston scored 31 points and McGrady said this shows just “how good the Houston Rockets are.”

Rockets are 19-3 ATS during their franchise-record 22-game winning streak.
Rockets are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 home games.

Key Injuries- F Carl Landry (8 ppg; knee) is questionable.

Warriors (-2, O/U 229): Golden State avoided a bad loss on Saturday against the Grizzlies, pulling out a 110-107 victory.
