Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Florida vs. Boston (-165, 5.5)

If you saw the Bruins play the Capitals last night, it's hard to believe they have been one of the hottest teams in the league lately. Washington throttled Boston 10-2 and ended a six-game Bruins winning streak.

Boston looked like it had never played defense before, leaving 50-goal scorer Alex Ovechkin unchecked like he was an American League call-up. Ovechkin scored a hat trick and had a five-point night.

Even worse than Boston's defense was its goaltending. Tim Thomas was chased from the net after four goals before the 10-minute mark and then after three goals on 10 shots on Alex Auld, he found himself back between the pipes for more punishment.

When you consider the last six meetings in this series have gone over the total , all of which were 5.5 or six goals , the over looks too tempting to pass up tonight.

                  Pick: Over 5.5

                  Vancouver vs. Colorado (-155, 5.5)

Peter Forsberg is listed as questionable tonight, but don?t be shocked if it's the night he makes his 2008 debut with the Avs.

Colorado is short-handed with a list of injuries, the most recent to Ryan Smyth who hit the boards in a scary collision Saturday night and is out indefinitely.

The Avs have generated some momentum with four wins in their last five games and they can't afford to slow down as they cling to the final playoff spot in the West. They are currently tied with seventh-place Vancouver and ninth-place Nashville with 74 points, which gives tonight's game added importance.

Colorado has won the last three meetings with the Canucks this season and Vancouver has just five goals in its last three games, so you can see why oddsmakers have the Avs favored here.

                  Pick: Colorado

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Tips and Trends (Updated)
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at Orlando Magic (NBA | 7 PM ET)
Orlando won't need to worry about defending Chris Bosh, who has tortured the Magic during his career, averaging 33.8 points per game against them. Bosh scored 40 points in the last meeting, but he will miss his second straight game with a sore knee. He is expected to miss a week of action. BIG EDGE: MAGIC
Anthony Parker has picked up some of the scoring load with Bosh out, averaging 24.5 points in the last 2 games. He could have a mismatch here as well since Orlando's Hedo Turkoglu has played some point guard with Keyon Dooling and Jameer Nelson nursing injuries. EDGE: RAPTORS
Raptors are 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The OVER is 9-1 in Toronto's last 10 games vs. Eastern Conference.
The OVER is 7-2 in Toronto's last 9 road games.
The OVER is 6-2 Toronto's last 8 overall.

New Jersey Nets at San Antonio Spurs (8 PM ET)

New Jersey has dropped 10 straight meetings with San Antonio after losing to the Spurs on Sunday. The Nets are 1-9 ATS during that series skid, and they have been held under 90 points 8 times during that stretch. BIG EDGE: SPURS & UNDER
San Antonio is beginning to peak with Tony Parker back in the lineup, winning 9 straight games for the team's longest winning streak since winnning 13 in a row last year en route to the NBA title. The Spurs are 6-3 ATS during their winning streak but have failed to cover 2 of 3. EDGE: SPURS
Nets are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 Tuesday games.
Nets are 2-14 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
The OVER is 9-4-1 in New Jersey's last 14 road games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in San Antonio's last 8 home games.
The UNDER is 16-7 in San Antonio's last 23 overall.
The UNDER is 13-5 in the last 18 meetings.

Phoenix Suns at Portland Trail Blazers (10 PM ET)

Phoenix has been worse defensively with Shaquille O'Neal in the lineup, surrendering 112.5 points per game in losing 4 of 6 games. That's up from 104 per game before Shaq and is definitely a reason for concern. “I think it’s probably an understatement if I say we are struggling,” Suns head coach Mike D’Antoni said. “I think it just comes down to playing hard. Playing with emotion. And we have not done it.” EDGE: BLAZERS
Surprisingly, the Suns are 13-1 this season when Steve Nash scores 10 or fewer points. Nash is averaging 20 points in the team's losses this season compared to 16.3 in the wins. He is averaging 11.2 points per game lifetime vs. Portland, which could be a good thing if some other scorers can step up. SLIGHT EDGE: SUNS
Suns are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games vs. Northwest Division.
Blazers are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 home games.
The OVER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings in Portland.
The OVER is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Phoenix's last 9 games vs. Northwest Division.

Los Angeles Lakers at Sacramento Kings (10 PM ET)

Surprisingly, this will be the first meeting between the teams this season. They will play each other 3 times after tonight, which means the Kings will help determine if the Lakers finish with the best record in the Western Conference. LA has won 4 of the last 5 games between them both SU & ATS. EDGE: LAKERS
Kobe Bryant is coming off a monster 52-point game for the Lakers on Sunday, scoring 30 of his points after the third quarter in a 108-104 overtime win against Dallas. Bryant averaged 31.3 points against the Kings last season, including 38 in 2 games at Sacramento. EDGE: LAKERS
New Laker Pau Gasol has never won at Arco Arena in 10 career games, all as a member of the Grizzlies. SLIGHT EDGE: KINGS
Lakers are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games vs. Pacific Division.
Lakers are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 Tuesday games.
Lakers are 14-4 ATS in their last 18 games overall.
Kings are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 Tuesday games.
Kings are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 home games.
Favorite is 14-5 ATS in the last 19 meetings.
The OVER is 11-2 in Sacramento's last 13 home games.
